What makes a story timeless? Can an Arabic film ever be truly apolitical?Can a story about men ever exist without being a story about women? And what happens when we shift the gaze? Lebanese filmmaker Cynthia Sawma welcomes Rawiyat member Myriam Hage to explore these questions and more—reclaiming narratives and centering women’s voices in cinema.
Myriam el Hajj is a Lebanese filmmaker. Her second feature documentary, Diaries from Lebanon, premiered at the Berlinale Panorama in 2024. She also teaches film at the Lebanese Academy of Fine Arts and is a member of several film commissions, including the CNC. Myriam is also a founding member of Rawiyat.

ميريام الحاج هي مخرجة لبنانية ، عرض فيلمها الوثائقي الطويل الثاني ، متل قصص الحب ، في بانوراما برليناله في 2024. كما أنها تُدَرِّس السينما في الأكاديمية اللبنانية للفنون الجميلة ، وهي عضو في عدة لجان سينمائية ، بما في ذلك المركز الوطني الفرنسي للسينما. ميريام هي أيضا عضو مؤسس لمجموعة راويات.

Ses films donnent à voir différentes formes de contestations dans la quête universelle de l’égalité. Résidente de la Villa Albertine à l’automne 2022, puis de la Casa Velàzquez (2023-2024), Bahia poursuit actuellement ses recherches sur la figure de la sorcière.

In this episode, Rawiyat member and filmmaker Dorothée Myriam Kellou welcomes filmmaker Assia Boundaoui to delve into these questions.
Assia Boundaoui is an Algerian-American investigative journalist and filmmaker. Her award-winning feature-length directorial debut, The Feeling of Being Watched, a documentary investigating a decade of FBI surveillance in Assia's Arab American community, had its world premiere at the 2018 Tribeca Film Festival and was nationally broadcast on PBS “POV.”

How are films made despite difficult circumstances? What is the importance of collective work, and how can we continue telling stories despite challenges and disappointments? In this episode, Rawiyat member and filmmaker Randa Ali welcomes filmmaker Hend Bakr to delve into these questions.
Hend Bakr is a director and producer from Alexandria, Egypt, and co-founder of Rufy's Films. In 2023, her first feature documentary The Tedious Tour of M, was in the official selections at Aswan Int'l film festival, Amman Int'l film festival and Gabes Cinema Fen, where it received a special mention from the jury.
