In this Patreon-exclusive episode, Randy and Mike break down the psychology of fear, the frustration of dealing with idiots in the system, and why the DOC should legalize and sell weed inside instead of letting the black market flood the yards with K2 and poison. It’s blunt talk about real issues from someone who’s lived it.

The Red Onion Randy Podcast, Featuring the life and times of Randall Via, currently serving 1,214 years in Virginia for capital murder and armed robbery.
Hey everyone — quick update:
Buckingham Correctional Center has been on lockdown, which means Randy hasn’t been able to use the phones or do video visits. He’s okay — he didn’t do anything wrong — but when the prison locks down, everything shuts down: calls, visits, movement. So unfortunately, we haven’t been able to record anything new with him.
But we didn’t want to leave you hanging.
So today we’ve got a special episode featuring Ashley Johnigan, who’s currently serving a life sentence at California Institution for Women. Ashley shares what life looks like from her perspective — including her thoughts on transgender inmates being transferred into women’s prisons, and what her mornings are like behind the walls.
This episode’s a little different from our usual, but we’d love to know what you think:
Should we feature more incarcerated voices when Randy’s temporarily locked down?
Drop a comment and let us know.
Thanks for riding with us — more Randy episodes coming as soon as he’s back on the line.

On today’s episode of the podcast, Randy responds to a question from one of his Patrons — Substack writer black sheep mom — who asked:
👉 “What have you seen in prison when it comes to mothers? The good, the bad, and everything in between?”
From phone calls that never come… to the ride-or-die moms who never miss a visit… to the ones who shaped the man Randy became — he answers it all, raw and real.
🖤 Thank you to @blacksheepmom for the powerful question!
