  • Toma Clark Haines - host of The Republic of Toma podcast presented by ASPIRE DESIGN AND HOME magazine - sits down with German Producer, Director and Writer Radek Wegrzyn and American Author, Artist and Podcaster Suzka Collins to discuss their upcoming film Wonders in Dementialand. Coming from 3 different locations - Toma in Venice, Radek in Berlin and Suzka in Los Angeles they discuss how life in the times of the Coronavirus feels like an altered reality.

Wonders in Dementialand is the name of Suzka’s book which discusses the other side of dementia. Suzka writes in her book, “Dementialand is a topsy turvy place of secrets and discovery where I often found myself in the mirror of dementia. Its reverseness showed me the other side of everything and the other side of myself.” Toma draws comparison to this time of the pandemic as an opportunity to reveal us to ourselves as we’re faced with a new way of living.

When living with and caring for her mother, Suzka decided to embrace the dementia and step into her mothers world. Toma discusses learning to embrace solitude in these times but also her personal struggles with loneliness in quarantine. While Radek, as a writer who typically spends large quantities of time alone writing, looking inward, says in many ways he feels that the rest of the world as they went into self sheltering were seeing how he typically lives as a creative entrepreneur. He explained how this pandemic has brought him closer to his extended family and actually pulled him out into more familial socialization and regular routine than he normally experiences.

Sharing 3 unique experiences during the pandemic from 3 different countries, these friends laugh, share experiences, but also share themselves.

    ABOUT:
Suzka is a painter and a writer. Her work evokes a vibrant magical world that exists just a step outside reality. In her quirky, heart-warming debut book Wonders in Dementialand Suzka takes her readers on an exhilarating journey into the world of dementialand. Suzka’s novel is a thoughtful exploration, a testament to the author’s unique insight into her personal visit to Dementialand.

Chicago born, Suzka studied at the Chicago Academy of Art and received a degree from Northern Illinois University. In Chicago Suzka was involved in theater, both directing and producing; a performer of Mime for the city of Chicago, and a student of ‘improv’ from Chicago's Second City Company. As a published cartoonist, Suzka moved to California in 1986 to write/create her second book but fell in love with paint instead. She never returned to Chicago and never returned to the small boxes of her cartoon characters.

As a painter, Suzka has exhibited her work in numerous one-woman shows. Her huge installations have been exhibited at Chicago‘s Navy Pier and throughout the Monterey Peninsula and has a dedicated following of collectors throughout the country. Suzka is the stage set designer and painter for the Monterey Jazz Festival since 1996 and has delighted the Monterey jazz audiences with her powerful architectural aesthetic for over two decades.

Professional storytelling really was the next logical step. His credits as writer, director and executive producer include the award winning tragicomedy FATHER, SON & HOLY COW as well as the theatrical documentaries VIOLINISSIMO and THE SCHOOL ON MAGIC MOUNTAIN. Radek is also alumnus of the Maine Media College and the Documentary Campus Master School program.

  • Toma Clark Haines - host of The Republic of Toma podcast presented by ASPIRE DESIGN AND HOME magazine - sits down with Dr. Rocky Ruggero to discuss how history repeats itself. While other girls might have binge watched all 12 seasons of RHONY during quarantine, Toma binged on Rocky’s popular art history podcast “Rebuilding the Renaissance” learning why 1348 was a year that changed the world.

The Renaissance was born out of the plague, and with it came new arts, sciences and ideas, but also a new more egalitarian way of living. Toma proposes that hindsight is 2020. She believes this pandemic presents opportunities for growth and to create a new Renaissance, as well as a new way of living based upon connection, collaboration and communication. Rocky adds, “Post Tenebras Lux”, After Darkness Comes The Light.

Did the coronavirus hit a global reset button, giving us an opportunity to emerge stronger as a society than before? Are we living a paradigm shift?

Toma and Rocky detour into a discussion on food, wine, travel in Italy and la dolce vita before delving into the more meaty topic of global transformation and change. Rocky makes history bite-sized as he and Toma compare the plague to the pandemic, and the transition from the Middle Ages into Modernity with the present day. Rocky cautions that during the original Renaissance, they didn’t know they were living in the Renaissance. This was a term applied posthumously, as with change comes pain. There is no better metaphor for transformation than the process by which the caterpillar crawls inside the cocoon and emerges a butterfly. And while change may be painful, the butterfly doesn’t fit back inside its cocoon once it emerges.
    The butterfly must fly.

In a conversation filled with laughter, tongue twisting words in Italian and philosophical fodder, Rocky and Toma discuss history like you’ve never heard it discussed before. Dr. Rocky Ruggiero has been a professor of art and architectural history since 1999. He received his BA from the College of the Holy Cross and a Master of Arts degree from Syracuse University, where he was awarded a prestigious Florence Fellowship in 1996. He furthered his art historical studies at the University of Exeter, UK, where he received a Ph.D. in Art History and Visual Culture. In addition to lecturing for various American universities in Florence, Italy, including Syracuse, Kent State, Vanderbilt, and Boston College, Dr. Ruggiero has also starred in various TV documentaries concerning the Italian Renaissance. He has appeared as an expert witness for NBC News, as well as in the History Channel’s “Engineering an Empire: Da Vinci’s World” and “Museum Secrets: the Uffizi Gallery”, and the more recent NatGeo/NOVA PBS program on Brunelleschi’s dome entitled “Great Cathedral Mystery.” After living in Florence, Italy for 20 years, Dr. Ruggiero now divides his time between the US and Italy. In the US, he offers specialized lectures, educational webinars, and cultural events throughout the country as a paid speaker on Italian art and architectural history. In Italy, Dr. Ruggiero offers private excursions and week-long travel programs throughout the country. • Welcome to the Republic of Toma Podcast, presented by ASPIRE DESIGN AND HOME !

ASPIRE DESIGN AND HOME magazine is a storyteller of sublime living. For this reason, we’ve partnered with them to offer a globally chic guide to living a life less ordinary. I’m Toma Clark Haines, and I’m your host. In this podcast I’m going to share my life — and the people I meet — with you. I will sit down to have conversations with emergent and eminent architects, artisans, designers, developers, and tastemakers as well as just plain fabulous people I meet from around the globe. From Paris to London, Bangkok and Beyond
I’m bringing you conversations as if you’re a guest at my dinner table. I use this word “conversations” intentionally, because these are not interviews; they are chats among friends allowing you glimpses from behind the scenes into lives that are well designed.

As for me, I’m an American and I’ve lived overseas for more than 20 years. I’ve lived in Paris, Amsterdam, Berlin and now I reside in Venice. But I wasn’t ‘to the manor born’ — I grew up in a small town in Oklahoma and as a child, I had more cows as friends than classmates. Through a magical twist of fate, I moved overseas in my 20’s and infiltrated the luxury market in both Europe and Asia.

    I’m a CEO.

    I’m a multi-passionate entrepreneur.

I’m a jewelry designer, and I also have my own licensed lines of furniture.

I’m a brand and creative strategist.

For the last decade, I’ve run The Antiques Diva & Co - the world's largest antiques touring company offering one- on-one customized antique buying tours, spanning 3 continents and 16 countries.

Most of all, I’m a Dreamer — one who has figured out how to turn dreams into reality.

We will travel together - both in my imagination - and in reality. I am taking you on a voyage to The Republic of Toma. We will travel to see design inspiration, meet design muses and my personal mentors.

This is the Republic of Me, but it's also the Republic of You

You and only you have the power to create your own reality.
