Most hunters spend plenty of time thinking about tags, gear, optics, rifles, bows, and where to find animals. Far fewer spend time learning how to take care of themselves when things don't go according to plan.
In this episode, Jaden sits down with retired Navy diver, survival instructor, and Sitka’s big game product development lead, John Barklow to talk about the often-overlooked skills that keep hunters in the game when conditions get tough. We cover everything from water management and fire building to foot care, clothing systems, hypothermia prevention, and the mindset required to endure challenging conditions in the backcountry.
John shares stories from Alaska, military survival training, Africa, and decades spent teaching people how to thrive in harsh environments. We also discuss his upcoming book, Knowledge From Storms, and why the "care and feeding of the hunter" may be one of the biggest factors separating successful hunters from those who head home early.
If you've ever wondered how to stay in the field longer, avoid preventable mistakes, and become a more capable outdoorsman, this episode is packed with practical lessons from one of the best to teach them.

Longtime Rokslide writer, film host, and friend of the show, Tony Trietch, joins the Rokcast to talk about what it really takes to consistently find success out West. From giant mule deer and desert bulls to decoying rut-crazed whitetails, Tony breaks down the lessons he’s learned after decades of hunting the West as a nonresident.
Tony dives into how western hunting has changed over the years, why time in a unit still beats any shortcut, and how he’s adapted his approach as tags get harder to draw and mule deer populations continue to shift. The guys also get into scouting strategies, learning new country, physical preparation, archery gear setups, and the mindset required to stay patient on mature animals.
The conversation also covers hunting more efficiently with limited tags, why repeat experience in a unit matters, rangefinding binoculars vs. handheld rangefinders, and so much more.
If you’re a DIY western hunter trying to become more efficient, patient, and adaptable in the mountains or plains, this episode is packed with hard-earned lessons from one of the most experienced and successful nonresident hunters in the game.

On today's Rokcast, Robby hosts Dan Gates of Coloradans for Responsible Wildlife Management (C.R.W.M.)
Dan is a frequent guest on the Rokcast because we believe he's not only fighting for the Right to Hunt & Fish in Colorado, but in all of North America. C.R.W.M. and it's supporters were crucial in defeating Colorado Ballot Proposition 127 back in 2024.
The fight continues with protecting Colorado hunters by making sure that the Constitutional Amendment for the Right to Hunt & Fish in Colorado passes. By passing this proposed Amendment in November of 2026, hunters are shoring up the North American Model of Wildlife Conservation as the best way to scientifically manage all wildlife on the continent.
It's a quick listen and Dan explains the ways hunters--both resident and non-resident--can help get the Right to Hunt & Fish codified into Colorado's constitution. This includes the chance to hunt the famed Hill Ranch for bull elk this fall. This license takes over 30 points to draw in the Ranching for Wildlife program and is only reserved for residents. But with this Landowner tag opportunity offered up by the Hill Ranch, even a non-resident can participate. Find more information or purchase tickets here

Cody Schroeder with a Nevada Mule Deer Buck
Nevada might be one of the most interesting mule deer states in the West, and in this episode, Nevada's Cody Schroeder joins the Rokcast to explain what’s happening on the ground with Silver State mule deer. From drought cycles and winterkill to buck ratios, tag allocations, and feral horses, this conversation digs deep into the trade-offs shaping modern mule deer management.
We break down why Nevada manages for some of the highest buck-to-doe ratios in the West, why hunters continue pushing for even older age class deer, and what that means for opportunity moving forward. Cody also explains Nevada’s unique season structures, bonus point system, mandatory harvest reporting, and why some of the hardest tags in the state can still be brutally difficult hunts despite producing old bucks.
The conversation also dives into the realities of managing mule deer in an arid state. We cover spring and fall fawn surveys, migration corridor work, wildlife crossings, drought concerns heading into 2026, and the massive challenge Nevada faces with feral horse populations on the landscape. If you’ve ever wondered how weather, predators, habitat, and hunting pressure all collide to shape deer hunting in Nevada, this episode gives you a candid look behind the curtain.
Along the way, Cody shares stories from his own Nevada sheep hunt, thoughts on why hunters should still swing for the fences in the draw, and a reminder that hunting memories with family matter a whole lot more than waiting for “perfect” conditions.

This episode is a deep dive into pronghorn hunting with Chance Marshall of Extreme Outfitters, a Wyoming-based guide who’s spent nearly two decades chasing and helping clients kill big antelope. We cover everything from how his family built their outfitting business to why pronghorn are one of the most misunderstood animals in the West. If you’ve mostly hunted deer or elk, this conversation will open your eyes to how different pronghorn really are, especially when it comes to behavior, visibility, and how they use the landscape.
A big chunk of this episode focuses on field judging, which is where most hunters get tripped up. Chance breaks down why mass matters more than length, how prong placement affects score, and why so many “good-looking” bucks end up being average once you walk up to them. We also get into practical strategies for actually finding better bucks, whether that’s covering ground early season, glassing large groups later in the year, or learning how certain areas consistently produce mature animals.
We also dig into timing and tactics, including when pronghorn are most predictable, how the rut can actually make big bucks harder to kill, and what approaches work best for both rifle and archery hunters. There’s a lot of real-world insight here on spot-and-stalk versus waterhole setups, how to recover after blowing a stalk, and why pronghorn hunting is one of the best ways to sharpen your overall western hunting skills.
To wrap it up, Chance shares a few standout stories from the field, including one of the wildest pronghorn ever taken, and we touch on Wyoming draw strategy and what it realistically takes to hunt quality units. Whether you’re planning your first antelope hunt or trying to level up and be more selective, this episode gives you a much clearer picture of how to approach pronghorn hunting the right way.

In this episode, Jaden Bales sits down with Luke Schultz to break down elk diets, habitat preferences, and how food availability shapes where elk live, move, and survive. Luke brings a unique perspective as a habitat-focused biologist who also spends plenty of time in the field hunting and scouting.
They cover the difference between elk and deer diets, why elk thrive across the West, and how hunters can use plant knowledge to make better decisions in the field. This isn’t about becoming a botanist, it’s about paying attention and stacking small advantages to put you in elk.
The guys also hit a quick Wyoming herd update and talk about what current habitat conditions could mean for the next few seasons. If you’ve ever wondered why elk are in one basin and not the next, this one will help connect the dots and hopefully put more of them in your optics next fall.

If you’ve been hearing about historically low snowpack maps, hearing doom-and-gloom about drought, or trying to figure out if your hunt is about to get nuked by wildfires… this episode is worth your time.
Today, Jaden sits down with Montana-based hydrologist Josh Boyd to break down what’s actually happening across the West right now. We dig into how this winter shaped up, why snowpack is all over the board depending on elevation, and why a “low snow year” doesn’t automatically mean bad hunting.
One of the biggest takeaways: snowpack is just one piece of the puzzle. Fall moisture, soil saturation, and especially what happens in June and early July matter way more than most hunters realize. In fact, wildfire season in the Northern Rockies is driven far more by early summer heat and lack of precipitation than by how much snow fell in January.
We also walk through what’s happening regionally right now. Montana and parts of Wyoming are hanging in there with decent snowpack, while Colorado, Utah, Arizona, and New Mexico are staring at historically low levels. Oregon’s in a tough spot too. But even in those places, soil moisture and spring weather could still shift the outlook before fall.
From a hunting standpoint, this conversation really comes down to how animals respond to moisture. In wet years, feed is everywhere and animals scatter. In dry years, they concentrate around limited water and quality forage. Neither is “better,” but they require completely different strategies.

High-end hunting optics have changed a lot in the last decade. Better glass is part of the story, but the real shift is happening in how optics connect with the rest of your hunting system. In this episode, I sit down with Ryan Holm from Leica to break down where optics technology is today and how hunters can actually use these tools to become more effective in the field. Ryan brings a unique perspective as both a hunter and someone who has spent his career around high-performance gear.
We dive into what separates top-tier optics companies, why glass quality matters for low-light performance, and how modern optics are starting to integrate with things like ballistic solvers, weather meters, and mapping apps. This conversation is more about understanding what these tools can do and how hunters can take advantage of them than anything. We also talk through practical optics setups for different styles of hunting, from archery elk hunts in tight country to long-range rifle hunts for mule deer in big open terrain.
Ryan also shares some simple but often overlooked tips that can dramatically improve your ability to get accurate ranges in the field. Stabilizing your rangefinder, using tripods, understanding beam divergence settings, and properly calibrating the compass in modern rangefinding binoculars can make the difference between a confident shot and bad data. If you’ve ever struggled to get a clean range in brush, timber, or broken terrain, this episode will help you understand why and how to fix it.
If you want to become a better hunter behind the glass and get more reliable information before the shot, this conversation is worth your time.

This week we go full mule deer nerd mode on the Rokcast.
We brought together a room full of big buck hunters with Travis Hobbs, Corey Dixon, Braxton Hamilton, and Robby Denning to talk buck age versus score based on the deer they’ve had aged. These aren’t guesses. Not “he looked mature on the hoof” conversations.
Everyone lab-aged their deer and the guys dive into that data from over 70 bucks, including 15 that grossed 200 inches or better. What we found might surprise you. Most of the biggest deer weren’t ancient. They were five- and six-year-old bucks. Some giants were only three. And some grandpa bucks at seven- and eight-years-old barely cracked the 160s.
We dive into what tooth aging has taught us about judging bucks on the hoof, the myth of regression, how hard winters really affect antler growth, and why security matters more than limited tags. If you care about big mule deer, management, or just want to know how old your buck really was and some tips to find out, this one’s for you.

Technology in hunting is advancing faster than most of us can keep up with. Thermals. Night vision. Cell trail cameras. Drones. AI filtering game cam photos. The Idaho Hunting and Advanced Technology Working Group (here) spent months wrestling with one big question: at what point does modern advantage overwhelm wildlife and erode fair chase?
In this episode, Idahoans Tal Sampson and Brock Maynard break down what the Hunting and Technology (H.A.T.) Working Group actually did, what proposals are heading to the Idaho Legislature, and why this is not a “ban” but a proposed prohibited timeframe from August 30 through December 31 for certain high-tech tools.
We talk real harvest data, opportunity vs. limited hunting, predator management carve-outs, long-range shooting, and the uncomfortable truth that hunters are the minority voice in today’s culture. Whether you agree or disagree, this conversation matters for the future of hunting across the West. If you care about opportunity, the sustainability of hunting, and fair chase ethics, now is the time to get informed and get involved ahead of the 2026 Idaho Legislative Session.

In this episode of the Rokcast, Jaden sits down with Andrew Whitney for a conversation that starts on the range and carries straight into real hunting application. We spent the day shooting rifles, testing different ammo, talking fundamentals, and then hit record while everything was still fresh. This is not a theory-heavy or internet-driven episode. It’s a grounded discussion about what actually matters when you’re trying to make clean kills in the field.
Andrew wears a few hats. He’s a guide, a serious shooter, and one of the people behind Tenacity Firearms, a company focused on building production rifles that behave like true customs without the custom price tag or lead time. What makes this conversation valuable is that Andrew is a hunter first. We talk about shooting positions, managing recoil, reading wind, building stable platforms, and why most rifle mistakes come from rushing shots rather than lack of gear.
We also dig into the overlap and the gap between shooters who hunt and hunters who shoot. From managing adrenaline behind the rifle, to choosing prone at 400 yards over a sketchy seated shot at 150, this episode walks through the decision-making process that experienced hunters use to control variables instead of forcing opportunities. There’s a deep dive into smaller, more manageable calibers, suppressors, rifle setup, and why precision and consistency beat raw horsepower almost every time.
Enjoy this episode with Andrew Whitney of Tenacity Firearms.
