This episode is a rollercoaster from start to finish! I'm joined by coffee merchant, musician, sometimes comedian, potential future mayor of Christchurch, amateur box-ticker, businessman and Crystal Pineapple guild administrator - it's Mark "Chirny" Chirnside!
I've been aware of Mark for several years and so it was great that he was able to stop by and have a chat on the podcast. We talked a lot about applying for arts funding, the fallacies and pitfalls of institutions and what steps he's taken to future-proof his own ones, there's HEAPS of coffee chat, we talked about the intricacies of the coffee community here in Christchurch, and then we end with Mark telling me about the Crystal Pineapple project, it's truly a fascinating wee tale that came out of nowhere and had me enthralled from start to finish.
Mark's Coffee shop Crafted Coffee Company can be found at 121 Blenheim Road, Christchurch, and on facebook here: https://www.facebook.com/thecraftedcoffeecompany

The first ever Ruddle Me This crossover episode! In this episode I'm doing a swapcast with Simone Whitlow from The Tales of History & Imagination Podcast! I'm trying to do a better job at connecting with other podcasters and this was a good first step. In this episode we chat about Simone's history performing in music, as well as how she got into history and then decided to create a whole podcast around it. We also spoke about Forteana which was something new I learnt about, somewhat hard to explain but you can read all about it on wikipedia, but described by Charles Fort as a "distinctive blend of mocking humor, penetrating insight, and calculated outrageousness"
The blurb of Simone's show is: Ever heard the Tale of the man who tried to kill time as we know it? The mysterious beast which stalked a remote French village in the 1760s? What about the time a prankster ‘Zipped’ two Chicago television stations? Tales of History and Imagination tells the Tales from history less told. We discuss strange, enigmatic characters, the cameo roles in life’s play, and, sometimes, major events from a viewpoint rarely seen.
If you'd like to check out Simone's show, visit https://historyandimagination.com/ and you can listen in there, or just search for Tales of History & Imagination on your favourite podcatcher!

Sorry squad, we've missed our Hoss Town upload for the month, Matt came down with a ripper of a migraine on the filming day and that was unfortunately my last window before a super busy 2 week period including a gig on the road and the taping of my special, so Hoss Town shall return in 2025!
Luckily I have 1 more podcast in my Break Glass in case of emergency folder, and this week I've got Hamish Mabon-Ross back on the podcast to discuss all the crime tv shows we enjoyed as well as talk about why seemingly straight laced innocent men such as ourselves love watching crime shows. We talk about Sons of Anarchy, The Wire, Breaking Bad, The Sopranos and a handful of others. Hope you enjoy it!

It's another bonus episode! This week I'm joined by my dear friend JinJin from back in Japan. We reminisced about the time we performed an improv show at a hostel in the middle of nowhere to an audience of Chinese tourists with me only speaking English, the other 2 only speaking Japanese, and the tourists speaking neither, somehow it was actually a really fun show. We catch up on how JinJin has been and what kind of shows he is performing on as an improviser and musician in Japan, as well as how he got interested in Improv, as well as what's the difference between stand-up, rakugo, and manzai. It was a great little catch up and JinJin is just an amazing guy, so positive and enthusiastic, he always gives 110%.

Shockingly fast, here's another Volume of The Phantom Files! This time featuring four chilling tales and I also share my findings after getting out into the field and doing some research at a pretty commonly accepted haunted location in my town - The Riccarton House! I spoke to a guide there who told me that they were sensitive to spirits and have had several encounters over the years. We also feature the tales: The Devil Went Out To Dinner, The Apartment Fire, The Full English, and The Lobby Time Slip. I hope you enjoy!

The Phantom Files, a subseries of the Ruddle Me This! podcast featuring paranormal stories from all over New Zealand; Cryptids, Ghosts, UFOs and everything else from beyond the veil. All of the stories have been submitted by real people, and often recorded and told in their own voices. It's not a show about ridiculing, debunking or discrediting paranormal experiences, more about sharing cosy spooky stories. If you like M.R. James, Spooked, Shadows At The Door, Monsters Among Us or The NoSleep Podcast, you'll love The Phantom Files! -
This week I'm joined by local Christchurch Musician Ruby Kush! I booked a meeting room in the central Christchurch Library, Turanga and we recorded the episode there as something a bit different. We talked about her history as a musician, how she got started releasing tracks and what it's like trying to make a living as a musician in Christchurch. We also talked about her activisim and what angles she might take next year moving into politics at a local level. We bonded over a mutual childhood experience of watching Sailor Moon and Cardcaptors and then ended with some looser, more off the wall questions such as "What's your favourite struggle meal?" and "What's one food from history you'd like to go back in time and try?" It's a great episode and I reckon keep your eye on Ruby over the next year, she'll be popping off before long!

Wowza what a guest I have for you this week! It's TV's Courtney Dawson! If you follow comedy then Courtney will be very familiar to you. I was lucky enough to catch Courtney while she was down for a few days and recorded this hilarious podcast. One of the funniest people in NZ on and off stage. We talked about things such as: how does a white person give a Pepeha? Her father's history of doing Mr Beast-like challenges and especially his latest one - Poppy's Comedy Club opened in his very own garage. Courtney tells us about a potentially paranormal experience she had, and about the time she foiled a vintage clothing store robbery, with a whole pile of laughs along the way. Hope you enjoy!
Like Courtney said at the end: just google her, otherwise find her on Instagram at: https://www.instagram.com/cdawsoxx/

I recently watched the film Manjhi – The Mountain Man, about Dashrath Manjhi, a real life Indian man who carved a road through a mountain using only hand tools over the course of 22 years to make a road for his village to get to a nearby bigger village, reducing the travel time from 2 hours to around 40 minutes. I've always been fascinated with India in general, especially after growing up watching Russell Peters specials, and years ago I watched a special by Hamish And Andy of Australia where they explored India. I'm just curious about other countries in general so Ben Vyas, a local comedian on the scene was kind enough to join me on the pod and chat about India, Mountain Man, Ganesh, his Hindu faith in general and just any other questions I had in general about the country. We ended up getting really deep at the end and I realized in the middle of my conversation with Ben why this Mountain Man story has resonated with me so much. I hope you enjoy it!

In this episode, I brought back my regular compadre, Hamish Mabon-Ross to discuss the Young Adult horror vampire novel series that we both enjoyed in our youth - The Saga of Darren Shan! I had been feeling really nostalgic for this series as of late and when Hame mentioned that he was also familiar with it, I thought that's it! We need to do an episode of the pod talking about it. We mostly talk about his Cirque Du Freak / Vampire's Assistant / Tunnels of Blood books, but we also do talk about his later work, The Demonata and Zom-B towards the end. It's a bit of a mess in terms of continuity, we jump all over the place as random bits and pieces spark memories about other bits of the books, but I think you'll enjoy it all the same.
I know Darren includes podcasts and videos about his work occasionally in his newsletter the Shanville Monthly so if you're reading this Darren, thanks for the incredible books, I enjoyed them immensely as a kid and I'm sure they must have a part in shaping my personality as I grew up. Keep up the great work!
Cover art featuring my actual books.
The books, in case you're interested in checking them out are: The Saga of Darren Shan (also known as the Cirque Du Freak series
Vampire Blood Trilogy: Cirque Du Freak, The Vampire's Assistant, Tunnels of Blood.
Vampire Rites Trilogy: Vampire Mountain, Trials of Death, The Vampire Prince.
Vampire War Trilogy: Hunters of the Dusk, Allies of the Night, Killers of the Dawn.
Vampire Destiny Trilogy: The Lake of Souls, Lord of the Shadows, Sons of Destiny.
The Demonata: Lord Loss, Demon Thief, Slawter, Bec, Blood Beast, Demon Apocalypse, Death's Shadow, Wolf Island, Dark Calling, Hell's Heroes.
And then there's the Zom-B series but I'm too lazy to grab all the individual titles, give it a read, it's cool stuff! The Thin Executioner is awesome too.

Back from the grave! It's another edition of The Phantom Files, just over a year later than Volume III. As usual I've got some fantastic tales to share, in this episode Rebecca from Volume I makes a return telling us about an entity she created called The Hunter. I play an old radio recording called Bongo In The Pilliga from an Australian radio show called Overnights about the area of Australia called The Pilliga where ghosts and cryptids are rumoured to have been sighted. I retell a story of one of the only instances where Christchurch had a ghost - The Victoria Street Ghost. Tracey Royce of The Quantum Foundation returns to tell us about an entity she saw that we have no way of describing but the story sent chills down my spine to hear it! We close off with a short story about the mythical Cape Reigna here in New Zealand, thought to be the entrance to the underworld in Māori mythology. It's a great episode, hope you like it!
This image shows how Tracey saw the entity that she did.
If you'd like to preorder a copy of Tracey's book, flick her an email to [email protected] and say hello, no payment needed until the book is published!

In this episode I'm joined by Wellington based stand-up comedian, Dan Boerman who just returned from a hell of a run at the Edinburgh Fringe and so wanted to spread some of the wisdom he acquired while over there doing everything solo and yet still having massive crowds with many sold out nights. Some of the things Dan suggested discussing were:
How I marketed my show without PR/an agentStuff that I wish I knewBenefits of Edinburgh / opportunitiesHow to not lose lots of money*How to not have a mental breakdown**these apply to Edinburgh Fringe. Can’t help outside of this lol
We also chatted about how to find a venue as well as source some accommodation which I had heard were the two hardest things about doing the EdFringe. It was my first time speaking to Dan face to face and he was a lovely fella. I hope you enjoy it!

In this episode I'm joined by a Christchurch based Therapist, Logan Robinson! Hot dog, he's a proper therapist and everything. We met very randomly as I saw a post he made on Reddit about offering cheap therapy, $60 every 2 weeks so just $30 a week. I felt that that was very generous of him to try and do his bit to help the mental health crisis we've got going on in NZ.
Here's a bit about Logan's specialities: "I'm a professional therapist with specialisation in ADHD/ADD, anxiety, depression, stress and burnout. I have a professional background in Mental Health, Social Work, Coaching and Vocational Rehabilitation alongside experience working with across the spectrum of disability, including neurodiversity."
I thought it would be cool to bring Logan on the pod and have a chat about mental health and he turned out to be a really nice, empathetic guy who seems like he offers practical and realistic solutions to helping your mental health. I reckon I'll bring him back on the pod at some point to yarn some more.
If you'd like to contact Logan and see if he's the right fit for you, visit https://robinsonwellness.org/ and tell him Big Queasy sent ya!

In this episode I'm joined by probably the sweetest man in comedy - it's Kieran Carr! We met in November 2023 ish in New Zealand and even though he's back in the UK now we've stayed loosely in touch and he was keen to join me for an episode where we discussed his Tiny Joys. Kieran was also at the time in Edinburgh preparing to do a short run of his Solo Show "I'm Trying My Best" so we chatted a bit about the economical implications on the city of Edinburgh every year due to the festival as well as what we like in a festival show.

This week I'm joined by improviser, comedian and all round funny fella, Jarrod Cook! We thought it might be fun to do some improv comedy live on the podcast and so independently came up with 5 characters to do small audio-only sketches as and then the other person would be "Yes, and"ing them in order to find the funny. Disclaimer - I'm not an improviser so your results may vary! I had a lot of fun riffing with Jarrod and we ended on some rapid fire questions to get to know him better. Hope you enjoy!

This time I'm joined by my Can Do Comedy Compatriate, Matt Threadwell! I've known Matt for several years and this is surprisingly one of the first outside of stand up projects we have done together, sorry it took so long Matt, but it was a great episode!
Matt's Tiny Joys
Playback of sexy guitar licksBeing very correct and watching someone google it in front of youThe gawd damned SuperbowlPitching a joke for someone and then watching that joke KILLBeing "trapped in a warm bed by the partner and the catAside from his joys we also yapped about names for bands that we've been in or thought would be good, stand up comedy, South Park, the ahead-of-its-time professional wrestling character Muhammad Hassan, sports in general, being proud cat daddies, the Roman Empire of course made an appearance and we even have a new jingle for it every time it comes up on the show! We ended with some quick fire questions that led into a discussion about Anime. Listening back I could hear myself laughing and tee-heeing, so I hope you enjoy it too.

In this episode, the Dons of Hoss Town yap up a storm about the potential lockdown 2: electric boogaloo that we might have to go through, before moving on to something a bit lighter in the closing of Big Gary's Takeaways here in Christchurch as well as their favourite fish & chip establishments. Matt bares his soul and talks about the incredibly tough night he had in the finals of the Christchurch Raw Comedy Competition and Taylor vows to stage an insurrection in order to defend Matt's honour. The lads then talk about times they've failed in showbiz, most lately Taylor's trip to Twizel where he sold 11 tickets to a show in a theatre that seated 200 people! The big fullas wrap things up with some talk of Fringe Festivals and then take a jaunt down Harry Potter avenue to close things out.

Hoss Town is a monthly podcast by two big boys respectfully making some noise, stand up comedians Taylor Ruddle & Matt Lilley. The aforementioned Mayors of Hoss Town take a lighthearted look at masculinity in modern times - it's a journey of trying to find a balance between being Cavemen and Scholars with plenty of belly laughs along the way. -

In this episode I'm joined by Christchurch comedian, Tim Kelly! I wanted to bring Tim on to do a bit of an experiment and do a much looser format, this is the first podcast recorded on my new 2 person setup at home and it was so much fun. We chatted about The Olympics, being a father, Colin Quinn, Jim Norton, and how the two of us got into the Opie & Anthony radio show back in the day. Strap in because this one's a laugh and a half!

Like I mentioned last week in the interview with Kit Zakimi, I lived in Japan for about 3 years between 2014 and 2018, as it turns out I needed to use one of my pre-recorded "Break Glass" episodes due to being very busy the last few weeks so using the Japan one felt right. I've never told this whole story on any podcast before so my Villain Origin Story is making it's podcast debut right here on Ruddle Me This. I hope you enjoy it!

Today I'm joined by my friend Kit Zakimi, an up and coming YouTuber based in Okinawa. Kit and I have known each other for several years and worked together a few times but never actually had a face to face chat like we did on zoom this time. It was so nice being able to reminisce about Japan with Kit, as well as get an insight into what it's like as a YouTuber chasing the dream. We also chatted a lot about cultural identity as Kit is half Japanese who has lived in both the USA and Japan so has a lot of experience with both. I hope you enjoy it!

In this episode I'm joined by Geoff Wilson and we break down the movie The Menu (2022) which I've seen 3 times and each experience has been a totally different one. We talk about the idea of Greatness in the arts, whether the sacrifice is worth it in the end, how to stay happy as an artist as well as figuring out why we do the things we do. It's a fantastic listen, I really enjoyed chatting with Geoff. I also talk for about 15 minutes at the end about the movie Rite Here, Rite Now by one of my favourite bands - Ghost.
