Hey Scaredy Cats. For the longest time, I had one movie on my to watch list that was my white whale. I had seen it lauded as one of the scariest movies ever and the best horror movie youāve never seen. I was on the hunt. It wasnāt streaming anywhere in Canada and I had resigned myself to never seeing it. But then I saw an announcement on Twitter that it was being released on blu ray by Second Sight Films. So, of course, I preordered it and paid an obscene amount of money for a movie I had never watched, assuming that internet listicles were not lying to me and that it was indeed an incredible film. That film was Lake Mungo. And let me tell you that even though it was not what I was expecting, this 2008 Australian film had a huge impact on me.
Iām your host Sherri and this is just your friendly reminder that as always there will be loads of spoilers, so if you havenāt seen the movie, go watch it! Otherwise, proceed at your own risk.

Hey Scaredy Cats. Welcome back to the month of camp carnage. I know, I know, no one goes to camp in January, but when youāre stuck in the frozen tundra that is Ontario in the winter, you gotta do what you gotta do. As a kid growing up in the eighties, slashers were all the rage. Some of the first horror movies I saw were eighties slashers. So, I definitely have a soft spot for them and the more ridiculous the better. When I heard that there was a love letter to the subgenre with a soft marshmallow centre, I knew it was the kind of movie that I needed in my life. Did I mention that I listened to Bette Davis Eyes on repeat back in the day? Ok, so you couldnāt exactly listen to something on repeat back then. You had two options. You either made a tape with just that song on it OR you would take a couple of minutes, rewind and play again. But I digress. Letās head to Camp Blue Finch and meet some new camp counsellors and the menacing killer whoās going to ruin all the sexy times and fun. Itās time to meet THE FINAL GIRLS.
Iām your host Sherri and this is just your friendly reminder that as always there will be loads of spoilers, so if you havenāt seen the movie, go watch it! Otherwise, proceed at your own risk. Joining us today are Katie and Nick!

In 1978, one of the greatest horror movie franchises was born. Only two years later, another one would enter the world of horror, but weirdly enough, the villain that we associate with that franchise was really just another victim in the first installment. This swerve is so famous that it even became part of another horror movie franchise, when Ghostface first asked Casey Becker, who was the killer in the first Friday the 13th movie. So, how did the franchise that would see 10 sequels, video games, comic books, a tv series and countless fan films start? Letās head to Camp Crystal Lake and find out!

Hey Scaredy Cats. Itās Christmas time and weāre about to head to Kingston Falls to spend time with family, friends and furry little creatures. So, stock up on some Bathroom Buddies ā theyāre fantastic stocking stuffers! Weāre going to make some gingerbread people, get a Christmas tree from a very young Corey Feldman and watch a late night screening of Snow White and the Seven Dwarves. Just a word of warning, Kingston Falls may not be as idyllic as it first appears. Itās time to get festive, so grab your eggnog, turn down the lights as we chat about the 1984 smash, Gremlins.

Hey Scaredy Cats. I still remember when I found out that Santa wasnāt real. Iām going to peel back the curtain a little bit here and admit one of my embarrassing secrets. I was in grade seven, standing in line for French class. A bunch of my classmates were making fun of me for believing in Santa because generally by the age of eleven you know the truth. But not me. Whether I was just incredibly naĆÆve or my parents were just really good liars, or a bit of both, I still believed. To this day, one of my favourite teacher was that French teacher, Mr. Ikasala, because he came out of the classroom, overheard what was happening and said that he still believed in Santa Claus. I knew then that he was just trying to make me feel better, but it meant a lot. The illusion may have been destroyed, but I didnāt become a Christmas obsessed and homicidal Santa. The same canāt be said for the main character in the 1980 film, Christmas Evil, which incidentally, is John Watersā favourite Christmas movie.

Hey Scaredy Cats! Welcome back to the Haunted Library and our spooky countdown to Christmas. In the introduction to āTold After Supperā Jerome K Jerome writes āChristmas Eve is the ghosts' great gala night. On Christmas Eve they hold their annual fete. On Christmas Eve everybody in Ghostland who IS anybodyāor rather, speaking of ghosts, one should say, I suppose, every nobody who IS any nobodyācomes out to show himself or herself, to see and to be seen, to promenade about and display their winding-sheets and grave-clothes to each other, to criticise one another's style, and sneer at one another's complexion. So, since itās Christmas Eve, let's get to our last spooky ghost story.

Hey Scaredy Cats. Welcome back to the Haunted Library and our seven day countdown to Christmas. Each day weāll be featuring a spooky ghost story that is perfect to listen to as the nights grow cold and dark. In fact, today marks the Winter Solstice, the day of the year with the fewest hours of daylight. That makes it the perfect reason to read scary stories (if you need a reason, that is!). In an article in the Globe and Mail, Jessica Duffin Wolfe writes āperhaps nothing is more Christmasy than ghosts. They toast the home, condense memory and signal the pleasures and frustrations of guests and hosts. Plenty of carols remind us that Christmas is a festival of the night, and the dead too come home for the holidays.ā

Hey Scaredy Cats. Welcome back to the Haunted Library and our seven day countdown to Christmas. Each day, weāll be reading a spooky Christmas ghost story in the tradition of the Victorians. In his 1891 anthology of Christmas ghost stories, titled Told After Supper, British writer Jerome K. Jerome wrote āNothing satisfies us on Christmas Eve but to hear each other tell authentic anecdotes about specters.ā Agreed, Mr. Jerome. So, letās not delay any longer as we read...

Hey Scaredy Cats. Thereās a line in the song Itās the Most Wonderful Time of the Year that goes āthereāll be scary ghost stories and tales of the glories of Christmases long long agoā It may seem odd to us now, but telling spooky stories at Christmas was a tradition that saw its peak during the Victorian era in Great Britain. The most famous example is probably A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens, but many writers in the late 19th and early 20th century published ghost stories that would be read around a fire as the nights grew longer and colder.
So why ghost stories? Christmas is supposed to be festive and joyful, right? Take into consideration that Christmas is inextricably tied with pagan traditions that marked the winter solstice. Pagans believed that the winter solstice was when the veil between the living and dead was at its thinnest. Yule has been linked to The Wild Hunt, a ghostly procession in the sky and increased supernatural activity. So, what did folks do when the nights were long and cold and they didnāt have a whole lot of other diversions? They would tell spooky stories by the fire, some of which were passed down orally. With the Industrial Revolution, these stories could now be printed and stories like A Christmas Carol became popular in periodicals and books.
The trend may not have caught on in North America, but as someone who wants to consume spooky things all year round, itās a tradition that Iāve embraced over the past few years. And now, Iād like to share some of these stories with you. For the seven days leading up to Christmas, weāll be releasing one story a day. Who knows, we might even have some special guests on to read a story or two!Part One: Smee by A.M. Burrage

Hey Scaredy Cats. In the mid eighties, monster movies just werenāt the trend in horror. The genre was dominated by slashers like Friday the 13th. In 1984, we had movies like Silent Night, Deadly Night, Friday the 13th: the Final Chapter (spoiler alert, it wasnāt) and probably most importantly of all, A Nightmare on Elm Street. But the horror writers and directors of the eighties would have grown up with the Hammer horror movies, so it was inevitable that someone would have come along to revitalize the monster movie, or more specifically, the vampire movie. That person was Tom Holland and his 1985 love letter to classic horror was Fright Night.
Joining us to chat about vampires are the Real Housewives of Saskatoon, Crystal and Michelle.
Iām your host Sherri and this is just your friendly reminder that as always there will be loads of spoilers, so if you havenāt seen the movie, go watch it! Otherwise, proceed at your own risk.
Before we get into the movie, I just wanted to share something near and dear to my heart. We have a special event coming up⦠On November 5, Iāll be holding the 3rd annual Scareathon ā my gaming marathon during which I will play scary games for 24 hours straight and stream them on Twitch as part of Extra Life Game Day. Extra Life is an organization that was founded in Texas in 2008 and theyāve raised over $100 million USD to support childrenās hospitals. They help fund critical treatments or pediatric medical equipment, ensure that hospitals can provide charitable care and cover specialized services that may not be covered by insurance. Iāll be raising money for my local Childrenās Miracle Network hospital and Iād love it if you popped in. I will be doing all kinds of silly things to entertain and incentivize donors. You can find me on Twitch as Scaredy Sherri and you can donate here.

Hey Scaredy Cats! Welcome to the Haunted Library. Iām Sherri⦠(Ryan introduces himself). Weāve talked about it on so many occasions, but we are both huge fans of haunted house stories. Since itās October and Halloween is just around the corner, we wanted to talk about one of our favourite haunted house novels. In fact, itās a book so scary that Stephen King has described it as one of the most important horror novels of the twentieth century. Itās an absolute classic and has inspired a play, two movies and a Netflix series. Grab yourself a seasonal beverage, curl up under your favourite blanket and get cozy because itās time to talk about Shirley Jacksonās The Haunting of Hill House.

Hey Scaredy Cats. Imagine youāre a young child, maybe six or seven years old. You head to your local theatre to catch a matinee all by yourself. Youāre a hardened horror fan despite your young age, but what you see scares you so much that you literally pray for the sunshine to last. This movie sticks with you for decades and when you become a filmmaker, you remake it as a way of purging it from your system. Thatās exactly what happened to Indonesian filmmaker, Joko Anwar. The movie? Satanās Slaves.
This is just your friendly reminder that as always, we will be breaking down the plot in great detail. That means⦠there will be loads of spoilers, so if you havenāt seen the movie, go watch it!
