Charlie Walker's adventures have taken him to the most remote and challenging places in the world. During this episode he shares stories from his epic 43,000-mile cycle tour, spanning across Europe, Asia, and Africa. But his adventures are not just taken on a bike - he has also trekked across Papua New Guinea, hiked in the Siberian Arctic, paddled down a tributary of the Congo River and recently cycled (or hike a biked!) through the Gola Rainforest in West Africa.
These adventures haven't all been smooth sailing. Indeed, Charlie has faced moments of extreme hardship, including an imprisonment in a Siberian detention centre in 2022 - within weeks of Russia invading Ukraine.
Charlie also reflects on the awe-inspiring moments he's been lucky to have due to his adventures - enjoying times of pure solitude and the feelings of being alone in a vast and empty landscape. We also talk about the changing landscape of travel brought on by technology, and how much things have changed since he first started taking long distance adventures.
You can follow Charlie via his instagram account - @cwexplore and his website - www.cwexplore.com where you can also purchase his books which I highly recommend!!

This episode is part 2 sharing guest Phill Hargreaves story and experiences from his three year Cycle Tour taken in 1984. You can listen to Part 1 here.
This journey saw Phill leave home in the UK destination Australia. He left as a group of three, in Turkey his group became two and then from Nepal he continued the journey solo. This conversation picks up that journey from Nepal as Phill made his way through Asia to Australia.
Some incredible stories were shared for this leg of the journey by Phill including travelling through Myanmar, Island hopping in Indonesia - and then a wild work experience encounter on a fishing trawler when he finally reached Australia.
After saving money Phill then decided to cycle back to the UK. He travelled through Australia and NZ before then heading home via China and Tibet. He'd catch the Trans-Siberian express to Germany and then cycled the rest of the journey. All up returning almost 3 years after setting off.
Phill's son Jamie is currently re-tracing this very journey Phill took and you can listen to the interview I had with him here. Jamie Hargreaves Episode
Be sure to also keep an eye out for his other son Olly who is now about to take his own journey from the UK to Singapore - his instagram is here: @sagas.of_olly.hargreaves

Imagine cycling from the UK to Australia - via Everest Basecamp no less - in 1984! Guest Phill Hargreaves shares his incredible cycling journey from the UK to Australia and back during the mid-1980s. Phill's early adventures started when he was about 11 or 12 years old and he joined his local cycle touring club. Each weekend would be filled with short touring trips around the UK and so he quickly discovered a passion for bike travel - one that would take him to the other side of the world as well as being the first to ride a bike all the way from the UK to Everest Base Camp.
This cycle tour began in 1984, when Phil, joined by two friends, left the UK bound for Australia. What followed was a true adventure. From crossing through what was at that time 'the Iron Curtain' of eastern Europe, dealing with bike failures, and then the unexpected events such as one of the trio 'disappearing' while riding out of Istanbul, Turkey, what struck me the most was this was a very different era of travel and a time where true 'adventure' could be had each and every day.
Phill's recounting of his story also touches upon differences in travel experiences over the decades, as ever what shiens through is the impactful hospitality of locals, as well as poignant reflections on the philosophies that guided his adventure. This episode is part one of a two-part series detailing Phill's extraordinary travels.
I have also featured an episode with Phill's son Jamie Hargreaves who is currently tracing the route which Phill took over 40 years ago. You can listen to the episode with Jamie here.

Guest Saoirse Pottie first took to bikepacking as a way of enjoying the experiences of travel without the need for spending huge amounts of money. Fair to say she has been hooked ever since and has also helped to generate a community around bike travel - especially championing and encouraging women to go on bikepacking adventures.
We discuss Saoirse's adventures through Ireland which she used as a way to gain the confidence to take on her biggest adventure - a bikepacking journey through Africa from Cape Town to Rwanda.
Since the Africa journey Saoirse has continued to embrace the spirit of travel and community - having recently ridden the Caraterra Austral from Patagonio to Ushuaia as part of a group of 12. I really appreciated her insights into how she first got into this mode of slow travel, why she believes everyone should take on a solo trip, what it was like to cycle through Africa and also the balance and joys which come with taking on journeys solo as well as with others.
You can find Saoirse via her instagram - @going.pottie - and more about her bikepacking weekend in Ireland - it's sold out but you can join the waiting list!

Jesus Estrada first got the idea for cycling as a way of travel when he saw one of his friend's doing it. He knew this was something he wanted to try for himself and after a few years of getting this idea he put it into action with a bike tour through Mexico - a perfect way to learn more about his own country.
He shares what it was like to travel slowly through the landscape, the incredible connections he made with strangers and also what he learnt about his own country from the coastal routes through to the jungle and ancient archeological pyramids - this was an adventure that really had it all.

Melanie Schautt, was a complete novice bikepacker who decided to set out on a seven-month journey through South America. Starting in Patagonia with her friends Luise and Blanka, the first two weeks were extremely challenging. Melanie had to deal with severe weather, tough terrain, and even illness. As the journey progressed, Melanie found her own rhythm, mastering the art of bikepacking as well as taking the time to connect deeply with Indigenous communities along the way.
We discuss the logistics, challenges, and highlights of her route through countries like Argentina, Bolivia, and Ecuador.
