Float Omen.
I discovered the band a few months back and immediately fell in love with one of their latest singles and never looked back. It was stuck in my head all day and remains so to this day.

Ahhh.... Dory Loup of the fantastic French punk band, Mirabelle.
Oh my goodness, do I love this band.... They bring the best parts of the late 90s and early 2000s to the forefront. Their latest releases floored me, especially a song that I believe will break them fully around the world... the singular hit "All My Friends." What a bliss filled, and absolutely fun ditty.
But enough about the band... it's my chance, right now, to hang out with the excellent singer from this windblast of a musical whirlwind. They have a new album coming out very soon, an LP called 'Welcome to my Funeral.'... and well... I love it. I'm sure I'm gonna love the guy too. You can hear the greatness in his voice so it's gonna be good... I know it.

This event would prove quite extraordinary, as they came on and performed 6 songs... maybe they felt it was time to stop the live thing by that time and wanted to go out with a band. SONGS OF THE WEEK: Vola - "I don't know how we got here".... classic smooth, mellow, pretty and complex... this is the latest from Denmark's VOLA.... a band I'm a huge fan of. I hope you love it. Axamenta.
The band is back after a long winter's nap. Axamenta formed in 1993.... that's 31 years, people. I can't lie and say I've been a fan since then because I didn't know an ounce about them until recently when their PR company sent me a copy of their 23 minute EP. Insta Fan! Axamenta is a combination of the things I love most about hard rock and heavy metal. They have figured out their own sound to be sure (I mean, it's only been 31 years), but they have found a way to incorporate their influences and DNA into a soup of amazing proportions and due to that, all the bands that you think influenced them were actually probably influenced by them.
If you like Dimmu Borgir, you'll like Axamenta. If you like progressive rock and metal, you'll like Axamenta. If you love Evergrey, you'll love Axamenta. IF you love progressive metal or Post Metal, you'll love Axamenta. You get the point.
I should also say that the give guys like me real hope that you just keep doing what you love and share with the world. They'll find you eventually. If you quit, why do it in the first place? Just keep going. Today, I get to host the guitarist and composer for the band... and here he is. Ian Van Gemeren is the man and he's here, right now and I'm so so stoked.

Dima Afanasyev of the Ukrainian superband, Sinoptik.
What can I say that I haven't mentioned a million times before online in various ways? I love Dima. He's pure. He's kind. He's an amazing musician. A genius in so many ways. His music is legend in Ukraine and his stature is assured.
I fell in love with his band when I heard the 2021 album, The Calling. It's truly revolutionary. It smacks of hints to the spiritual metal of the 70's. If you like Pink Floyd or Cactus or Vanilla Fudge or the fuzz of the late 70's or the 'stoner' bands of the early 90's, then Sinoptik is for you. Always referential, but never derivative.
This is guitarist, songwriter, and all around amazing humanitarian, Dima Afanasyev.

Kwabi Amoah-Forson.
The Peace Bus.
When I think about Kwabi at the Puyallup Fair about 15 months ago. He was near a food stand my kids stopped at, and we began to talk about his why.... why was he there and what was this thing called the Peace Bus. We also got into a short conversation on faith and doing the right thing for the betterment of others. His heart truly captured me, and I promised myself I'd do something for him in the near future.
Maybe being a guest on my show isn't the magical thing I'd ultimately like to gift him with, but it's a start.... because it's about building his audience, not mine. Kwabi's one of the purest people I've met in a long time... motivated by the deepest parts of his heart and spirit, which reminds me to do the same... to be led by the spirit in me.

THIS DAY IN HISTORY: On this day in 1987, I joined the Navy. 37 years ago today and I can see every moment clear as a bell. 10 years later, to the day, I was officially divorced from my first wife.
DEATHS: Amy Winehouse died on this day in 2011. I remember it so well. What an amazing talent. Cried watching her live performances a year ago. Not sure why, but recognizing the tragedy, I guess.

Alex Crescioni is my guest today.
Let me tell you what little I know of him and then explain why I wanted him as a guest. Alex is someone I admire for his quiet perseverance and will. He's the kind of professional in this business that continues to make great waves, produce incredible music, represent the best aspects of our industry and well.... from everything I've seen, he's a great guy.
Passion is a word used quite often to describe producers in our space. Most people forget that passion means 'to suffer.' That said, Alex is living proof that suffering, if one can call it that, is worth it to output the kind of material and influence that he's created.
Alex owns and operates Stygian Sound in Los Angeles, is friends of a few of my friends, and has worked on some of the most important records in modern history. He's amazing. Simply put, Alex has vision and determination and that's what matters, more than anything, in this world... whether it's in the arts, or your career of choice, commitment at all costs is the difference maker.

Sometimes, we find out about a person way later than we feel we should have. It's odd to be so active in the business of music and discover artists that have been changing the ground under our feet yet were keenly unaware of until recently.
My good friend Andreas Ballnus, of Philosophobia, hits me up and asks me if I've heard of this incredible music by something called 'Silent Skies.' I tell him that I have not. He proceeds to tell me about the project and link me to the music and it's quite literally everything I like in music.

WEIRD TRIVIA OF THE WEEK:
The UFO thing has really ramped up over previous years, and it seems there is a new oddity every week... even every day. Even though last week was the anniversary of the Roswell incident, I admit to almost constant curiosity. Silent Skies seems to me to be a musical metaphor for 'what's possible' in this world... this universe. Evidence abounds, yet some of it has to be false, but I'm sure, like all things, there is a nugget of truth in finding bodies, etc. What's your take?
SONG OF THE WEEK:
This week, I present Cardinals from UK. They have a new release called Clarity, which came out on Dreambound. If you're like me, you are looking for moody metallic leaning rock... metalcore. Heavy stuff, etc. but it has to have a melodic center. It has to have a competent singer and songwriting that piques my interest. Bands like Cardinals deserve our attention and today, we are going to either react or dream to this, but indeed it's happening. Enjoy!

To me, the frustration of being a music fan, and specifically a metal or progressive music fan is that the vast majority of music comes from other countries and has to be sought out. Some of the biggest bands in the world are those that Americans may never know about, or very little certainly.
Over the years, I've searched across the web, whether it's YouTube, or friends of friends bands, I've been able to uncover some amazing music that I would never know about... what's weird is discovering an act, then seeing that they are receiving international acclaim, or playing the biggest festivals, or both and wondering why they fell between the cracks, and then you remember.... "OH YEAH, I live in America." As a culture, if it's not easy to digest, chances are we aren't really listening or know very little, and it's MY job to change that.
I heard Jamie's music through a friend in Belgium who's been on the show, one Mr Sander Rom. Now, because of another mutual connection in music producers, I was able to discover a furious band called BEAR (which has the greatest marketing material by the way) and fall in love with the very intense music they create.... then, as I dive deeper, I see that Jamie is the guitarist in Cobra, the Impaler, who's a huge act all over the EU, and I feel stupid... like, how weird is it that I just don't know any of this?
I'm supposedly a metal listener, and for that matter, an influence in the PR space of hard and/or progressive music. How did I miss this? Well, today, you might learn why and more importantly, discover this great guy and his amazing music. So, here we go: Ladies and gentleman, the young legend that is.... I met Jon when I interviewed him years ago for an old band that has since gone defunct, ... it just is what it is... it happens to the best of them.
You may remember when I was talking to producer Jonathan Plum back in 2016 on Rockstar Superhero Episode #5, (Alice in Chains, and Blind Melon (he did the finger snaps too!)), we talked about this very subject at length, when we talked about my old band and how close we came to the big deal but life intruded and we fell apart, to put it as plainly as Jonathan did.... SO MANY BANDS. So many bands of massive talent, etc. Well,
Jon had that happen to him because sometimes life intrudes in awful ways, as was the case here. I doubt we'll talk about that today, but maybe I can convince Jon to talk if I get him drunk on emotion? I guess that's not funny to say. That said, no fancy intro here... we are diving straight into the dark and deep waters of this shared experience....here he is... my buddy from across the Atlantic. My man, Jon Charles!

MONOLOGUE: I'm so SICK! Cleaned Garage out.... have you ever done this? How is it possible it ends up like this? Wife is a packrat. Will never admit it, but she is. Stopped and looked at pictures... that's the pieces of paper with old versions of yourself on it.
It reminded me how young I was and how hot my wife was (and still is?) Had a come to Jesus moment with a family member recently which worked out really well, which basically means that as hard as it is to ask the big questions OR TO TALK ABOUT ANYTHING HARD, well.. it's hard. Life is full of moments that change everything if we're willing to bare our souls.
THIS DAY IN HISTORY: Prince released Purple Rain... he was 25 years old... 25, dude. Tell me a Prince story.
BIRTHDAYS: George Orwell, born on this day in 1903. Did you know he was only 46 years old when he passed, and even though he was on the BBC a number of times, there are NO recordings of his voice in existence?
DEATHS: On this day in 2009, I was at Niagara Falls for a work trip. My wife and I had just checked into our hotel, when we heard the news that well known actress Farrah Fawcett had died of cancer, then a few moments later, we heard about Michael Jackson and his death from drug overdose. Any influence there?

Clark Larew Jones!
The man has the best last name..... but since you all know that my full name is Robert Leland Jones, it makes sense.. Son of John, which means God is gracious... I have always liked that part of my name, even if I don't use it often.
You've seen Clark on Comedy Central, the Laugh Factory and well... everywhere a comedic voice matters.
His POV is amazingly insightful, hugely funny, and well...if you've seen his "soulmate is dead" bit, you know he's a legend in the making. He's been around for a long time, but like most comedians, you'd swear he was an overnight sensation, since you didn't watch him from day one... but trust me, he's worked it hard for a long time. The man is committed.
Lastly, You know me. I don't swing lightly. I find the best people because I wield my ability to discern. I know talent when I see and hear it, and after today, you will too. This is Clark Larew Jones!

MONOLOGUE: Recently, my wife graduated with another degree in occupational therapy and it was a great reminder of a few things. 1) We must pursue something that sets us apart... no matter the cost. 2) I was so proud and found myself crying just watching her walk, let alone walk across the stage. 3) Love is a weird thing and my desire to hide from my emotions at times is even weirder.

ON THIS DAY: In 1815, Napoleon and his French army lost everything at the battle of Waterloo, which as we all know resulted in a fantastic pop hit by ABBA. Seriously, tho... the battle only lasted one day, which I didn't know until I did my research for this show today. Also, Arthur Wellington, who rose to historical prominence by leading the opposing armies against Napoleon had Beef Wellington named after him. That's the kind of hard hitting research we do here. Are you an ABBA fan?
BIRTHDAYS: 35 years ago today, my first born arrived, which is utter madness when you 1) realize I'm that old to have more than one child in his mid 30s, and 2) that also means I probably have grandchildren, of which I have 6. Do you have children, Clark?
DEATHS: A year ago today, Stockton Rush and 4 others died when his submersible, The Titan, imploded as it descended to visit the wreckage of the Titanic. Hubris is a weird thing. I admire his pioneering spirit. It takes almost complete disregard to do something new and unusual and he paid the price, but yeah... he could have done more to ensure safety. Then again, how do we visit the moon without risk? Did we ever visit the moon?

I fell in love with this band a few years ago, having heard of them through their management and label. They are from the UK, .... Newcastle to be exact... Their last album is a constant banger, called All In Good Time. The sound is groovy, the tonality of her voice sublime, and well.... they just frickin' rule. One of my favorite modern rock bands. This track, Halcion, is the newest release coming to us just last week, so we get a really early run at it.
Definitely recommend them. Amazing stuff.

THIS DAY IN HISTORY: In 1963, US President JFK says segregation is morally wrong and that it is "time to act" - this opens up a big can of worms because it puts a spotlight on all that's wrong with our assumptions of people over race, religion, or creed. It's the best thing for all but it brings out the worst in people. Look at what it continues to do to our world. We just can't get along. So much hate.
BIRTHDAYS: Richard Strauss (German composer, born in 1864). Born in Munich. This piece of music was heavily criticized at the time for representing philosophy through music.... based on Friedrich Nietzsche's idea of a super person instead of the concept of God.... that mankind was its own god. It's own hero The hero of this book was a prophet named Zarathustra who longed for higher aspirations. To Strauss, it was the idea of music as symbolism for Evolution, which is why Kubrick used it for 2001, a Space Odyssey. It's musical YEARNING. I find it compelling regardless of its place in pop culture or history. It's an intensely lovely piece of music.
ODDITY OF THE WEEK: New research indicates that elephants are even smarter than we previously thought. According to an article in the Associated Press, It turns out that elephants are one of the few mammals that call each other by names. Elephants have names for each other! Besides humans, it's also believed that the other mammals who do this are Dolphins and Parrots, which both make a lot of sense. I think it's much more, though. I think we have wrongly associated the idea of brain size with intelligence. We say that a small brain in a spider for example indicates it's not intelligent to the level a human is, yet it can do things that we can't even comprehend and it does them to a very high degree. Not just that it can spin a web, but in how it does it strategically. We assume it's due to some inner natural tendency, but I believe it's all intelligence, which indicates a creative power. Of course, this leads to a Creator, which is another whole can of fun.

Matt's legendary Australian hardcore band, King Parrot, has really made waves and strides over the past few years. They've found their way to the biggest stages in the world. Part of that is their connection to Pantera's Phil Anselmo, as the band are on his label, Housecore Records, but also because they might put on the most energetic, hilarious, and outrageous live act I've seen in decades.
I was able to see them last September when they played Seattle and within minutes of taking the stage, the tornado was on full steam. Matt and the band killed it, and the next thing I know it's over and I'm a sweaty mess. A hour whizzed by and I realized that I had grinned ear to ear the entire time.
Their show is a masterpiece of noise and outrageous energy and the man at the center of the whirlwind is my guest today.

MONOLOGUE: I've been on a real run with self help books lately. Part of it is that I like getting differing opinions about the nature of man and how an opinion can shape us. That said, what most seem to agree on, is the obvious.... it's about our mental state more than anything. Sure, it's vital that we are in decent health and looking to keep ourselves fit by eating well and getting daily exercise. BUT, the largest focus is always on mental health and acuity. As we all know, everything runs together in tandem, so if you don't feel good, you don't think well, and if you don't think well, chances are you don't feel physically well. That circle... that cycle. Kind of a big deal.
Here's the thing. We all know this, but we keep going as if a life will find health simply by powering through or waiting for something that makes us happy to want to make these changes. Why celebrity self help books? We have this habit of believing celebrities in general... they attract us with their big lifestyles that seem as though they are doing better. The reality of it is that they are still 100% mortal and filled with doubt just like you and I.
The reason I have read THESE last 3 books is that these 3 have done something wildly different than most. They stand out because they are 3 books based around the lives of 3 people who shouldn't have made it, but did.
1) Arnold Schwarzenegger had to get over post Nazi Germany parents, and an accent that wouldn't quit, to find a dream in America.
2) Gary John Bishop was a working class, general contractor, with an interest in helping people unlock their capacity for change.
3) Kevin Hart had to overcome a significant size disadvantage. He wanted to be a basketball player, his dad was a drug addict, and he grew up in a rough and tumble neighborhood.
You have to do the work and you have to go where the work is. Then, you not only have to outwork the competition, but you have to outwork the guy that would hire you. It never gets easy. In fact, the higher you go up the chain, the harder it gets because the expectations get bigger. As Kevin says and he's 100% true, it's not that hard to get where you want to go, but it's super hard to stay there. You never pay your dues. You just get new dues. Nobody is ever at the top, even if the rest of us perceive it as such.
Today is a big one: WORLD HUNGER DAY The day serves as a platform to highlight the harsh reality that many still face food scarcity and poor nutrition, which can lead to severe health problems. World hunger day started in 2011 and serves as a call to action to raise awareness and to encourage to serve others now. What are we waiting for? Have you ever participated in a day of service for others?
BIRTHDAYS: Gladys Knight is 79 years old today. I remember being a young man and hearing Midnight Train to Georgia. In fact, in 1974, when I was riding my bike around East Wenatchee, it was the song of the summer, even though it came out a year before. That was a zeitgeist moment for her and an indelible memory for me.

Today is Simen Sandnes day and I want to say that I love this man.
He's one of my favorite people in the world, because when Simen shows up, the world smiles a little brighter. Simen offers so much in the way of inspiration. He's a fantastic drummer, to be sure, but what sets him apart is his never ending desire to love, share kind thoughts, to encourage, and as mentioned in the previous sentence, to inspire. He's a wonder.

I love Josiah James. I have been a fan of Josiah's for a number of years.... fortunate to have met him way back in 2012, when he was touring his music around the country, driving his old Prius and playing at churches. He's had quite the career, both as a solo artist and as a songwriter for others. I'm sure you've heard his work and today we'll get a chance to dig a little deeper into the man, who he's working with (if at all) and what his plans are for the future. Okay, had a long night. Not gonna exaggerate, but yeah.... it was a rough one. I did something to my neck last night and it kept me up all night. Ended up having an insane dream that I won't really share with you because it'd be boring, but let me say something.
I've heard over the years that God talks to you through dreams. I have had some really compelling memorable dreams that have excited and terrified me. Some of you have heard the stories. In fact, years ago, I shared a very vivid dream I had with Seattle radio legend Spike O'neill about the end of the world and I can still see it in my head.
Well... last night, I had a dream where I was with friends, riding in a helicopter and the pilot didn't know what she was doing. We ended up crash landing, but survived (duh, it's a dream).... after the crash, I noticed we were near a friend's house. We went over... this guy is super famous.. .i mean like Beatles famous, and he's got a house full of guests, but he's also doing renovation work, so the house is in shambles in most rooms. As I wandered around, I noticed that I could never quite catch up to my famous friend and his friends, but when I got close, I would see them look at me from a distance, then duck into the next room... this happened over and over.
When I woke, it occurred to me that my dream was that I know these guys who are super famous, wealthy and successful in the worlds, and MY eyes, but I was never actually in the group.... meaning I was invited into the home, but never to the actual table.
It made me think about friendships and how we assume people feel differently about us than we do about them. It also made me think who do I really know and do they really know me? Do they care? Am I that overwhelming a personality that people will allow me into their world, but never care about me? Is it all in my head? Should it matter?
How does God feel about me? Am I invited to that table? Lots to ponder.

They went on the Tonight show in the late 80's, but they never broke in the huge way. However, they've always been an indie standard. They influenced so many bands.

MONOLOGUE:
It's been a week full of creative energy and gnashing of teeth. My head hurts way too much because I don't sleep, but when have I ever actually slept? The bags under my eyes prove the truth, you know? I'm starting to seriously think I have a solid case of sleep apnea. I know I'm not in perfect shape, but I've noticed the last few months (only the last few) that I wake every night with a very dry mouth and I think I'm sleeping with my mouth open at night. Granted, I'm also a diabetic now (don't get me started) and it's a sign of something greater and sadly distressing. All said, I know I'm turning a blind eye to my health, but I just don't have the bandwidth to care at this moment.
I'm still dealing with anger, but I can't complain too much. I've been begging the big man to take it all away from me, but he's got bigger fish to fry.
A very close friend who suffered from a brain tumor a few years ago has finally been diagnosed with malignant cancers in her liver and chest so things went upside down in our community of friends pretty quickly.
It reminds me that as much as I hate my life at times, I don't have to worry about having my head cut off because I don't believe the same things that the government does or how can I complain when I have a refrigerator with 25 different hot sauce flavors to compliment my meal? I mean ... how hard is this really?
Nik Barker and I had never met in person until today. Today is numero uno. All said, I have been a fan of Nik's for a number of years. I discovered his old band, Twelve Foot Ninja at the end of 2015. I'd heard about the band through the grapevine and my connections in the music business.
A buddy of mine had seen them at a festival in Ohio and told me how much he'd enjoyed them. Surprisingly, a new video of theirs ended up on YouTube.... something called One Hand Killing, and the next thing you know, I'm jumping down the rabbit hole of everything I'd missed. I told everyone. I learned all the material. I reveled in the absurdity of their musical skill levels and their very bizarre sense of humor. Sadly, within the last few years, the band went on permanent hiatus and Nik has moved on.
This all to say, regardless of what happened and where they may be going, they have done something very few bands have... they've created something truly unique and inspiring, they've reached around the globe and my guest today was the VOICE of that legacy.

My guest this week is Belgium's own Sander Rom!
Sander is a fantastic songwriter, guitarist and singer and I love him to death. He's the leader of the Mechelen scene's L'itch and, until recently (one week post recording this interview, one fifth of the EU supergroup known as Hippotraktor.
Available on Pelagic Records, Hippotraktor features members of L'itch and Psychonaut. The band is known for soaring hooks, technical riffing and earth-shattering breakdowns. Their new album releases June 7th, 2024 and it's progressive metal of the highest order. L'itch is an monster of an alternative band and is Sander's most important pet, with a new record releasing soon. I've heard it and it's unbelievably good. I can't wait to share more when the time is right.
Reiterating, Sander has all the bells and whistles in his musical repertoire and he's a fantastic human. Maybe the best ever. He is so clearly aware of his surroundings, he's inspiring, and above all, he's kind. We could all do better like Sander.
