The Putin regime has exploited the vulnerabilities of global social media platforms, using bots and trolls to promote its narratives. They also use it for coercive manipulation to change public attitudes towards Ukraine aid, and to cause fear, indecision, hesitation and caution among politicians and geo-political commentators. But Russia is not alone in using these methods; once developed the same techniques can be used by other powers, international and local to subvert democratic institutions and to warp public perception of the news and politics in their countries. Fabian Hoffmann is a Doctoral Research Fellow at the Oslo Nuclear Project at the University of Oslo. His research focuses on missile technology, nuclear strategy and defense policy. David Satter is a journalist and historian with unique insights into how the deformation and repression of the past, is having terrible consequences for present day Russia. David has written extensively about Russia and the Soviet Union, especially the decline and fall of the USSR and rise of post-Soviet Russia. David Satter became the first American journalist to be expelled from Russia since the Cold War in December 2013. This was perhaps not a surprising move, given that his books have covered topics such as the FSBâs role in the apartment bombings that brought Putin to power. From 1976 to 1982 David was the Moscow correspondent of the Financial Times, and then became a special correspondent on Soviet affairs for The Wall Street Journal. Cormac Smith has worked in Public Relations and Corporate Communications for over three decades. Before moving into the government sector in 2000 I spent most of the 1990âs managing media relations in the pharmaceutical industry. He has held several senior communication management positions in local government, and Whitehall departments, but in 2016 travelled to Ukraine to take up a special appointment as the âStrategic Communication Advisorâ to Pavlo Klimkin, then the Foreign Minister of Ukraine. He was attached to the British Embassy in Kyiv but was embedded in Ukraineâs Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the first foreigner to hold such a position. While in Kyiv, he also advised and provided training for five other government ministries and worked directly with three other cabinet ministers: Health, Education and the Deputy Prime Minister. Whatever mistakes he has made in the war Vladimir Putin has retained the Escalation Initiative, always proving he can push the war to a new level of brutality, with the Western allies constantly playing catch-up, and in many ways placing restrictions and delays on Ukraine in terms of how it fights back. What are the implications of this dynamic for the war and a potential Ukrainian victory?----------Terron Sims, II is a combat veteran, businessman, political leader, and a graduate of the Military Academy at West Point in 2000. He is the Executive Director of Military & Veterans Affairs for Merit, Chairs the DNCâs Veterans & Military Families (VMF) Council, and previously served as Chief-of-Staff to Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee. An Iraq veteran, Terron was key in establishing Baghdad's local governments and was Wasit Province's military liaison officer. Terron sits on the Board of Principals for the Truman National Security Project and is active in Democratic politics. Mr. Sims has served in political roles of increasing responsibility over the past decade. In 2008 and 2012, he was Director, Virginia VMF for Obama and served on the Defence and Veterans Policy Teams. Mr. Sims has published two novels, With Honor In Hand and Hands of Honor, and has written a third along with his Iraq memoirs, Baghdad Peace. According to The Economist, Tom Keatinge is one of a small group of 'âWhite collar vigilantes and poachers-turned-gamekeepersâ. Tomâs research focuses on matters at the intersection of finance and security, including the use of finance as a tool of intelligence and disruption. He has a Masterâs in Intelligence and International Security from Kingâs College London, where his research focused on the effectiveness of the global counter-terror finance regime. While most of the world still thought of Putin as âsomeone we could do business withâ, Edward published a prescient and insightful book in 2008 called âThe New Cold War â Putinâs threat to Russia and the Westâ. Edward Lucas is now a full-time Liberal Democrat is a Prospective candidate for the Cities of London and Westminster constituency, on a platform that includes defending democracy against dirty money and corruption. ----------Paul Mason is a British commentator and radio personality. He was Culture and Digital Editor of Channel 4 News, becoming the programme's Economics Editor in 2014. He is the author of several books, and a visiting professor at the University of Wolverhampton. Allegedly Mason was a member of the Workers' Power group, as a Leftie activist, but he now explains that âWhat his politics are is very complicated.â Mason was considered as a candidate by the Labour Party to run in the constituency of Islington North at this election but was not selected for the final shortlist. ----------Macer Gifford is a British veteran of the Ukrainian Army â who is well known to members of NAFO (North Atlantic Fellas Organization), and those who follow the Ukraine war in detail. As he says on his Twitter profile, he is channelling the spirit of George Orwell, and his dispatches from the frontlines of the war in Ukraine have been highly engaging, informative, eloquent, and full of humanity. Macer has an MSc in Security & Diplomacy and has followed Conservative politics for many years. ----------
