[4:27] About Marisa & her familyâs journey with ADHD
[9:43] Why Marisa decided to explore functional lab testing for her child
[14:32] The lab tests Marisa did with her child
[19:24] Key findings from the lab tests
[23:32] How Marisa first felt when they got their lab results back
[26:43] How Marisa handled the dietary and lifestyle changes they needed to make
[32:43] How long it took before Marisa saw improvements in her child
[35:08] Marisaâs advice to parents considering functional lab testing for their childrenMemorable Moments:
âShe was a very picky eaterâŠThen we started noticing the emotional dysregulation.ââWe were starting to get some judgment from some of our family, because when you donât understand ADHD, you donât get it. You look at a child and think, âWhy canât you discipline them? Why canât you calm them down? Why canât they regulate themselves?' Theyâre looking at them as bad kids because they see that as bad behavior.â
âFor the first time in our journey, I felt understood. I thought, âOh my gosh, this makes sense.ââ
âHonestly for us, it was a relief. It was validation that we werenât crazy..that there was something going on that we couldnât identify.â
âWe go to doctors nowâŠand youâre just always given something. Hereâs a pill. Hereâs a pill. Hereâs a pill. And you never get to the root of the issue.â
âWe never want her ADHD to be a handicap to her.â
âWe go in and we think we need to do it all at once, but thatâs overwhelming for usâŠWe just did one thing at a time.â
âIt was noticeable in her appearance as soon as she went off the gluten.â
âIt just takes time. Itâs hard at firstâŠbut just give it the time.â
âThe functional lab testing⊠is that foundation, and you can build on it.â
âThereâs more to treating ADHD than just medication. That is the one thing I wish Iâd known.â

Did you know that ADHD is meant to be a diagnosis of exclusion? This means other potential causes should be considered before confirming ADHD.
Surprisingly, conditions like concussions can show similar symptoms and are often misdiagnosed as ADHD. In this episode of the Soaring Child podcast, Dr. Spencer Zimmerman joins the show to discuss how concussions in kids are frequently mistaken for ADHD and what signs to look for.
Dr. Zimmerman is a Clinician and Founder at Idaho Brain and Body Institute, where he helps individuals struggling with neurological, psychological, and body-based symptoms and conditions. He's refined his unique method over the past 10 years and has worked with over 2,000 patients. He's the author of the best selling book Brain-Reset: 7 Steps to a Healthier Brain. He's been on ABC, CBS, and Daily Flash talking about brain health.
He's uniquely cross trained as both a Chiropractor and Nurse Practitioner. He's a Diplomate in Chiropractic Neurology, a Peptide Certified Provider through A4M, and has extensive training in Functional Medicine and Functional Immunology.

[22:37] What can be done to minimize the risk of concussions
[24:57] Where to find Dr. Zimmerman onlineMemorable Moments:
âIt may look like ADHD symptoms if a concussion goes misdiagnosed.â
âADHD rates are going up, and thereâs a lot of different things that are happeningâŠthat are contributing to that. But letâs not forget also that there can be other things that can cause ADHD-like symptoms.â
âWhen you get a diagnosis, youâve got to say, âIs there a better explanation for it?â So donât ever give a kid an ADHD diagnosis unless youâve said, âWeâve looked at the other things that would better explain these symptoms, and concussions are things that are routinely missed.â
âItâs actually upwards of 20% of kids who play contact sports will suffer a concussion each and every year, and 50% are never going to be diagnosed or evaluatedâŠ
âThe goal is not to prevent them from playing sports. The goal is to say, âHow can we play sports safely and then when is the right time to return because your functionality is back where it should be?ââ
âYou shouldnât be making a concussion diagnosis based purely on symptoms.â
âIf youâre suspecting a concussion, you wonât see it on imaging. You have to do these detailed tests.â
âIf you have a concussion, your risk of a lower extremity injury or any injury in a sport actually goes up the next 2 years...But if you get the concussion truly recovered and not just symptom-free, youâre going to minimize that risk.â
âFemales have a greater risk for concussions.â
âStrengthen your neck because that way, if you do, youâve got more resilience.â

Memorable Moments:
âWe are in a state of emergency for childrenâs mental health.â
âBy the time kids are 18, 1 in 2 will be diagnosed with a mental health disorder.â
âWhen we are talking about our childrenâs mental healthâŠwe always need to look at their guts.â
âAntibiotics given to infantsâŠcan significantly increase - by up to 50% - the risk of that child having mental health concerns by the time they are older kids or teenagers.â
âThe vast majority of neurotransmitters are made by our gut microbiome.â
âIf we do not have a healthy balance of all of these beneficial bacteria that make our neurotransmitters, thereâs no way we can have optimal or healthy brain development or brain functioning.â
âOne of the single most insidious and persistent and ever-present disruptors are our ultra-processed foods.â
âNot only do these ultra-processed foods affect our gut microbiome, they also affect our kids' brains.â
âIt takes only 2 months of a steady diet of ultra-processed foods to change our brain, we can reverse that trend with a steady diet of gut-nourishing, brain-nourishing food.â
âPsychological stress can disrupt your gut microbiome in the matter of an hour.â
âStress is not necessarily a bad thing.â
âHaving no stress may be more stressful and inflammatory to your body and brain than having some stress that you can overcome.â
âWhen you want your kids to expand their pallets, the best way is to get them cooking.â

What are primitive reflexes? What role do they play in ADHD symptoms? And can working on retained primitive reflexes really make that much of a difference in kids with ADHD?
Dr. Kaleb Scroggin joins this episode of the Soaring Child podcast to share more on this topic. Dr. Scroggin was born and raised in Savannah, Georgia where he currently runs his pediatric-focused Chiropractic practice. He was a high level athlete growing up where he was exposed to sports chiropractic and even went on to work with pro athletes in the NFL and MLB during his undergraduate and the first portion of his chiropractic schooling.
He was then exposed to the profound impact of working with children and the life changes that can happen when a childâs health is improved and restored. He immediately shifted from working with athletes and dove into newborn and neurodevelopmental health. From there he received a board certification in pediatrics and published a paper on balance and coordination in children with ASD, while running a practice and raising three beautiful children with his wife. Every day he is invigorated with the changes he sees in childrensâ lives.
If you are curious to learn more about retained primitive reflexes, tune in to this episode!

Key Takeaways:
[4:01] What are primitive reflexes?
[8:21] What are retained primitive reflexes?
[14:30] What should a parent do if they suspect a child has retained primitive reflexes?
[22:02] Are there specific reflexes that are directly related to ADHD challenges?
[30:16] Is there a time when itâs too late to fix these things?
[37:00] Where to find Kaleb online
Memorable Moments:
âPrimitive reflexes are the major movers of your body from about 4 months pre-birth to about 4 months after birth, and their goal is to actually train your brain on what to do.â
âThereâs about 14 differentâŠprimitive reflexesâŠthat we check in our office on our new infant exams that should be there at birth.â
âThere are some reflexes that are there starting at 4 months before birth and some that donât come on until a few months after birth that help with different developmental milestones.â
âMovement is the #1 driver of brain development.â
âThereâs a ton of infant reflexes that need to be integrated in order for that frontal lobe - the executive function - to have a good foundation to work.â
âYou have to turn on the whole frontal part of the brain in the developmental order as a baby for the adult part of the brain to work appropriately.â

Summer is full of outdoor activities and memorable adventures. But it's also a time when our children are more exposed to various environmental toxins, like chlorine from swimming pools, chemicals in sunscreens, etc. These toxins can add a significant load to their bodies, exacerbating ADHD symptoms.
In this episode of the Soaring Child podcast, discover how to have a non-toxic summer (and how to safely and effectively detox from any toxins your child might be exposed to).

Key Takeaways:
[3:20] Common toxins kids are exposed to during the summer
[7:20] Tips to make swimming less toxic
[11:38] What to look for in a sunscreen
[15:38] How parents can ensure a toxin-free environment at summer camp
[18:14] Natural ways to support detoxification and reduce the impact of toxins
Memorable Moments:
âDuring the summer, children are often more active and spend a considerable amount of time outdoors, which, while very beneficial for kids with ADHD, also increases their exposure to various environmental toxins.â
âBecause children's bodies are still developing, they are more vulnerable to the adverse effects of chemical exposures. Their smaller size, higher rates of metabolism, and the fact that they're closer to the ground (where some toxins settle) further increase their risk.â
âThough chlorine isnât ideal, there are things you can do to help your kids detox those chemicals before and after swimming.â
âYou can still use sunscreen but choose a cleaner brand and this will go a long way in reducing your childâs overall toxic load!â
âItâs much easier to limit a childâs toxic exposure when theyâre at home with us under our supervision, but many of our kids will also be going to summer camps so we need to think about this too.â
âThe goal is to support the body's natural detoxification processes, which include the liver, kidneys, digestive system, and skin, in a gentle and supportive way.â
âRemember, small tweaks can make a significant impact.â

ADHD symptoms don't emerge in a vacuum, and they often have underlying hidden stressors, sometimes multiple, that need to be addressed. Without tackling these root issues, families find themselves stuck on an endless rollercoaster of symptom management.
One often overlooked stressor is Lyme disease. Itâs known for its broad range of symptoms, including some of those that might mimic or exacerbate ADHD.
In this episode of the Soaring Child podcast, meet Heather Gray. Heather is a Functional Diagnostic Nutritionist and Bioenergetic Practitioner specializing in supporting clients with chronic and complex illnesses such as Lyme disease and similar diseases. She has 32 years of personal experience, and she understands the struggles of living with these conditions and is dedicated to helping others find relief.
Her personalized approach as a practitioner, podcast host, and author has helped countless people reduce inflammation in the body and brain, improve gut health, and achieve optimal wellness.
She helps her clients get to the root cause of their symptoms and helps them take control of their health journey.

Memorable Moments:
âLyme disease is the great mimicer.â
âOne of the telltale signs is itâs got migrating pain.â
âItâs a tick, mosquito, any blood-borne carrying insectâŠit can be sexually transmitted and it can be congenitally transmitted.â
âOnly 30% of people with Lyme Disease will get that bullseye [rash].â
âThereâs lots and lots of components that go into who gets it and who doesnât.â
âI canât even count how many times Iâve been reprimandedâŠwhen really it was an inflamed brain and lyme disease, mold toxicity, and celiac disease this whole time.â
âWhat a blessing it was at 34 years oldâŠto finally have a piece of paper that saidâŠthere wasnât something wrong with me in the way that I was made to feel my whole entire life.â
âThe CDC just recognized chronic Lyme Disease as a disease for the first time last year.â
âIâve talked to so many people with autoimmune and Lyme and they just talk about having flares, like itâs a normal part of the disease, which you donât have to have the flares if you address all the different areas that need to be addressed.â
âNo matter how common a symptom may be, it is never normal. It is always the bodyâs check engine light coming on, and sadly too often we take something over the counter, which is like putting a piece of tape over that check engine light, and things just keep getting worse and worseâŠSo pay attention to those symptoms.â

Memorable Moments:
âI tried everything I knew as a physicianâŠNo one ever - ever - suggested any kind of dietary intervention.â
âI thought I was doing good - giving him a good, healthy diet, but little did I know until I got into your program that there was so much more to dietary interventions than just the things that I knew as a dietician to do.â
As a dietitian and as a gastroenterologistâŠIâm well aware of the relationship between the brain and the gut interactions when it comes to gastrointestinal diseases...that same interaction affects the brain in terms of ADHD.â
âI was so frustrated as a dietician that the physicians did not appreciate the role of nutrition in preventing disease nor in treating disease and I thought, âYa know, if I can become a physician, I can then write the diet orders and I can help thousands of patients with my expertise in nutrition to treat them.â
âAs a patient, you turn to that doctor as the expert so somehow we have to get the word out there that nutrition, diet, and alternative methods are vital to the diagnosis and treatment of ADHD
âMy biggest regret is that I didnât know soonerâŠ.My son, for 19 years, was on a path I thought was best, which was medicationâŠHow many years of his life did he lose because I didnât know and try an alternative diet therapy?â
âYou have nothing to lose and everything to gain.â

âArtificial colors, also known as food dyes, are chemical substances developed in laboratories. They're used in a wide array of foods to enhance appearance, making them more visually appealing.â
âArtificial flavors, similar to artificial colors, are chemical compounds created in laboratories.â
âUnlike natural flavors that are derived from actual food sources, artificial flavors are synthesized to mimic natural tastes. These flavors are engineered to replicate the taste of fruits, nuts, spices, and other natural foods.â
âArtificial flavors are often complex mixtures of numerous chemicals.â
âHere are some common terms indicating artificial flavors or colors: Artificial Flavors, Artificial Colors, Synthetic Flavors, Artificial Flavoring Substances, Synthetic Food Coloring.â
âStudies have illuminated a concerning link between artificial additives and ADHD symptoms.â
âIn Britain, food is made with real ingredients, while in America, chemicals are often added with no warning label. This needs to change. American consumers deserve the same consideration as those outside the USA.â
âWhen chemicals are added to food, we should be informed. It's baffling that the United States continues to allow ingredients that are not even food, contributing to staggering health issues.â
âArtificial flavors and colors are everywhere. Even a lot of things that are clear or white in color have dyes or flavors in them.â
âMy best tip is to eat fewer processed foods as these additives are always in processed foods and to read those labels.â
âMy rule of thumb is, if you canât pronounce an item, put that item back on the shelf. The shorter the ingredient list, the better.â

Memorable Moments:
âWhen we change the way somebody breathes, we change their entire health.â
âThe average person is unconscious about how they breathe, and itâs something that we do 23,000 times a day, whether we like it or not. And air, believe it or not, is the thing that we consume the most. The average person, the average adult, consumes about 30 pounds of air a day.â
âHow we breathe plays a huge role in our immune health, plays a huge role in our energy levels, plays a huge role in how well we detoxify and eliminate toxicity from our body. In fact, 70% of the toxins in our body are actually eliminated through the lungs.â
âItâs a very sophisticated instrument of healing, and itâs also very simple. Weâre already doing it. We just need to draw our consciousness to it and then make the minor adjustments and shifts so that now we are breathing in a way that prioritizes our health.â
âOur breath overrides the brainâŠHow our children breathe and how we as adults breathe is super informative to the nervous system, to our cellular respiratory system, and also to our behavior as well.â
âThe easiest analogy I can give to people is that the breath is like the steering wheel of the nervous system. So are we breathing in such a way that itâs steering us in the right direction or are we breathing in such a way that itâs steering us in an undesirable direction.â
âWe want our nervous system to match our desired state, and our nervous system is steered by our breath.â

Key Takeaways:
[3:18] The Top Areas to Focus on - Beginner Level - Diet, Supplements, Exercise
[14:22] The Top Areas to Focus on - Intermediate Level - Functional Lab Testing, Targeted Supplementation, Optimizing Detoxification
[24:42] The Top Areas to Focus on - Advanced Level - Dietary Flexibility, Maintenance Supplements
Memorable Moments:
âDiet is the foundation of any plan to reduce ADHD symptoms naturally. The food we consume plays a crucial role in how our bodies and brains function.â
âSupplements should never be considered the be-all and end-all for ADHD support. As I say often, you canât supplement your way out of a poor diet. BUT, in conjunction with dietary changes, supplements can be very beneficial.â
âResearch shows that taking probiotics can help support that gut-brain connection. But, the problem with a lot of probiotics is that the strains donât survive digestion.â
âFunctional lab tests can uncover underlying issues that might be contributing to ADHD symptoms, such as nutrient deficiencies, parasites, leaky gut, food sensitivities, mold, etc.â
âOur bodies are constantly exposed to toxins, and for children with ADHD, reducing this toxic burden is really important.â
âIt is impossible to get rid of all toxins from your life, so thatâs why itâs important to optimize detoxification.â
âOnce you're in the thriving phase, it's important to reassess the supplements your child is taking. Maintenance supplements are about supporting ongoing health and preventing regression.â

Ever glanced at a food label and felt like you needed a degree to understand it? There is definitely A LOT of information on food labels that can make it tricky.
But, reading food labels is crucial, not just for those with dietary restrictions, but for anyone aiming to make healthier choices. From 'natural flavors' to hidden sugars, what's on the label can often be surprising.
Andrea Daigle joined this episode of the Soaring Child podcast, sharing invaluable insights on navigating the maze of food labels. Whether you're trying to cut out certain ingredients or just want to eat cleaner, Andrea's tips and tricks are a game-changer.
Link mentioned in the episode:
ADHD Fast Class - https://bit.ly/3GAbFQl
Key Takeaways:
[4:26] Why we need to read food labels
[6:11] Where to start with reading food labels
[9:39] Common foods that often have hidden gluten and dairy in them
[14:14] How to read the labels on eggs
[16:48] How to read labels for proteins like beef, chicken, and seafood
Memorable Moments:
âWe need to read every single label, and it can be a bit tedious, but eventually, youâre going to get the hang of it.â
âNow more than ever, it is so important to read labels because there are so many chemicals, additives, and quite frankly just nasty ingredients that are being put into our foods."
âThe key is, you want that list to be as clean as possible. A good rule of thumb here is, if you donât know what it is, we probably shouldnât be eating it.â
âThe end goal here is to know what each and every ingredient is, for you to be able to pronounce it, and that list shouldnât be very long.â
âThe gold standard is to look for pasture-raised eggs with grade AA rating with the organic label.â
âWhen youâre looking at beef, you want organic, grass fed beef.â
âFor chicken, weâre going to look for pasture-raised organic chicken.â
âFor seafood, wild caught is best.â
âThe only ingredient in your proteins should be the protein itself.â

Sheâs a speaker, author, and the host of the No Guilt Mom podcast. She appears in national media. [5:40] Where does âmom guiltâ come from?
[9:49] Mental habits mom need in their lives to combat guilt
[25:29] Tips for getting kids with ADHD to do chores
[33:08] Tips for finding joy as moms
[37:44] Where to find JoAnn online
Memorable Moments:
âChildren have challenging behaviors all the time, even if youâre not dealing with neurodivergence or ADHD. There are things that set us off as parents, and it goes back to how we view the situation.â
âAs moms, everyone is so hard on ourselves. We are constantly berating ourselves.â
âAll these things we say to ourselves, we would not accept anyone else saying to us.â
âThis constant flow of insults really affects our mood and really brings us down, so the first thing I would suggest is to start looking to see, âWhat am I saying to myself?ââ
âIf we give ourselves that self-compassionâŠthat is such a big help against that guilt that we feel every day.â
âA lot of the guilt also comes from trying to do it all.â
âWe have issues asking for helpâŠso much so that we would rather do it ourselves than ask for the help when doing it.â
âIf you have another adult in the home in addition to yourself, there is no reason you should be doing all the work.â
âItâs never going to fix the situation if you donât let people experience the natural consequences.â
âAm I going to be resentful and angry if I do this right now? If the answer is yes, then I donât do it, and I let natural consequences take its course.â
âGuilt never goes away; you just get better at handling it.â

And the last thing I want is to feel that way on vacationâŠand the same is true for my child.â
âWeâre not going to fudge it. People are always like, âYou have to live a little bit. Youâre on vacation.' Absolutely not. Thatâs the worst piece of advice.â
âI strongly recommend that you practice before you goâŠwhat you need to say to keep your family safe.â
âI really want to encourage folks not to be apologetic and afraid to speak up. Weâre so afraid of being a hassle, being a bother. But many people who work in the food industryâŠthey love to make their guests happyâŠSo give them the opportunity.â
âYou go from overwhelmed, âI canât possibly do it. Itâs too hard,' to âI can do it, and I feel better.â Itâs so worth it!â

âIt is true that supplements can play a very important role in nutrition and healing, but sadly no single supplement is going to solve all of your problems.â
âI always trongly recommend before considering supplementation that you address diet first or specific functional lab testing to identify underlying malfunctions and stressors.â
âUsing magnesium is not as simple as just running to your local pharmacy and picking up any bottle. Formulation matters.â

Memorable Moments:
âMany of us in the field call them [organ meats] Mother Natureâs multivitamin.â
âEverything that science tells us we need in a prenatalâŠthatâs in organ meats.â
âWhen people start to re-introduce organ meatsâŠwe find that we donât need to take as many supplements.â
âWe are a nutrient-deficient societyâŠBut we are not calorie deficientâŠPeople associate nutrient deficiency with, âIâm not eating enough food.' Well, itâs not that at all. Itâs that weâre eating the wrong foods.â
âWhat is the source of where we are getting these nutrients? And in some cases, when you are swallowing these nutrients, you are getting them in synthetic forms.â
âWhat I love about getting your nutrients from food is that itâs alreadyâŠin the form that is most bioavailable.â
âEating your nutrition versus swallowing..and this is really, really keyâŠone is working with your body. The other is complete guesswork.â
âThe B vitamins support every biological function in the body.â
âMore times than not, itâs [anxiety] actually a nutrient deficiency, and a lot of times itâs tied to B vitamins.â
âWhen we talk about organ meat, weâre not saying just pick one. Weâre talking, really focus on that whole animal.â
âStart with PluckâŠPluck is an ancestral superfood powder. Itâs got freeze dried powdered liver, heart, kidney, spleen, and pancreas.â
âYou can add it to anything, and it will make the food taste better.â

Key Takeaways:
[2:49] The best detoxing modalities for kids: detox baths, jumping on a trampoline, rebounding, sweating, sauna, lemon water, and milk thistle
[14:37] What to do if youâve changed the diet and are not seeing progress
[19:48] Are the dietary changes we recommend (cutting out gluten, dairy, soy) permanent?
[29:06] How much technology is too much? Why does my child's behavior become worse after watching technology?
[35:20] Potential reasons your ADHD child might struggle with sleep
Memorable Moments:
âA detox bath - #1 - that is something super easy and gentle to do that you can do 2-3 times a week.â
âYou want to start low and slow, build your way upâŠI usually find starting with 1 cup of baking soda, 1 cup of magnesium flakes, and you can work your way up depending on how much they weigh.â
âIdeally the recommendation is 1 minute per age, and so if they are 5 years old, then 5 minutes in the sauna with that temperature nice and low.â
âIf youâre somebody who is really solid on diet and youâve been gluten, dairy, and soy free for 6 months - 8 months - and youâve given it the good amount of time that healing takes, and youâre still not where you need to go, then that tells us we need to look deeper. We need to look deeper at what else is causing that inflammation.â
âWe want to get a really good snapshot of whatâs happening in the bodyâŠbecause in order for you to see whatâs really going on and for you to move the needle, we need to have some answers as to whatâs happening in the body, so the testing will allow us to do that for you.â
âIf you think about this bigger picture, when you go through a healing process and your children and your family are doing so much better and youâre feeling good, we just donât ever want to see you go backward. Letâs just keep moving forward, and keep that inflammation down as much as possible.â
âTechnology⊠is created to be addicting, and it is created to be over-stimulating, and thatâs a lot for a little brain to handle.â
âSleep is so important. Thatâs when weâre growing, thatâs when weâre detoxing, thatâs when weâre shifting and our minds and our brains are getting bigger, so itâs super important that sleep is well-balanced.â
