Welcome to episode 182 of the Sounds like a search and rescue podcast. This week we are joined by the NH Wild Crew - Nichole and Paul. They are avid white mountain hikers who focus on fun, photography and friends. They are here this week to share some stories, give us some info on their favorite hikes, tips on gear and photography. Plus we give a run down on proposed projects in the White Mountain National Forest including updates on Sawyer River road, Lincoln Woods, Hermit lake shelter and others. Stomp shares a story about Mt. Everest climbers using performance enhancers to increase their odds of finishing, butt sledding accidents, a review of some winter clothes from US Sherpa, a discussion about Snowshoe etiquette and butt sledding safety and a recent close call rescue off the greenleaf trail.

This week, writer Ty Gagne joins us to discuss the release of his new book, The Lions of Winter, the story of a search and rescue of two young climbers on Mount Washington, Hugh Herr and Jeff Batzer. The book chronicles the events of this multi-day rescue that took place in January of 1982 focusing on the men and women involved in the rescue including Albert Dow a young member of the rescue team that lost his life in an avalanche below the Lion Head area. This is the second part of our discussion.

To start the show, we have forest road updates, the first avalanche of the year on Tuckerman Ravine, the countdown to winter, a sinkhole swallows a grandma in Pennsylvania (a cat is involved in this situation), plus some recent search and rescue events in NH.
Note 1 - This episode contains spoilers. If you have not read The Lions of Winter, Ty's segment starts around 45 minutes into the show. We get into more specific details (caution - spoilers) around the 60 minute mark.

This week we are joined by Will Robinson. Will most recently completed a fastest known time for the Northeast 115 hiking list, completing a self supported FKT in 19 days, 15 hours, and 43 minutes. This is a unique accomplishment combining hiking, driving, logistics and maintaining nutrition for an extended period of time while hiking all the 4000 footers across Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, and New York. Will will break down his story and go over some other adventures he has had on the 115 list.
