A few years ago, I joined a gym. I was convinced that having access to ALL the equipment, all the classes, and all the expertise I could possibly need would transform my fitness. But I still had to show up. The gym wouldn't do the workout for me.

These days, I use an online training course. For this stage of my life - with a child, work, volunteering and everything else that comes with that - it’s a much better fit.

The point is: The training course isn’t inherently better than the gym. It’s only better because it suits me at this point in my life.

I think the same thing is happening right now with AI. Not to mention online courses, workshops, books, and all the other tools available to support career change.

Everyone seems to be asking: “What’s the best tool?”

But is that the right question?

    Let's talk about that.

Can you change your public sector career without risking everything?

YES. It’s not a quick-fix. But you can do it.

And it can lead you to a career that’s more aligned with who you are now – and how you want to contribute to the world in future.

It’s far more effective when you make space to think about what you really want next, both in your career AND in your life.

I used to think the only way to build a successful career was to move up within the same organisation. That’s what I saw the people around me doing. But over time my perspective shifted.

Doing work that makes a difference to how people lead their careers and live their lives. Working with leaders from all around the world, supporting and empowering them through times of change and transition.

Valuing my time highly, and working more flexibly and creatively. More importantly, I can be myself and do work that’s the best fit for me without stress or anxiety.

In my 5 month programme, I help my clients gain clarity about what success means to them now.

For now, let’s talk about the most critical mindset shifts for changing careers.

Make sure to grab my FREE downloadable ‘How to Overcome 4 Limiting Beliefs about Shifting Your Career’.

A public sector leader emailed me about it, saying:

“Thank you, Yvonne, for producing such a thought provoking guide.
The clarity and honesty you bring are incredibly valuable
for people like me, who are navigating career change and
finding themselves in the slums of a negative mindset.”

Imagine you’re a trapeze artist learning a new routine. You wouldn’t practise without a net below you, would you?

The net doesn’t make the act less brave. It makes it possible.

In the public sector, you’ve likely been performing with a net you didn’t have to build all by yourself. Your employer provided it: steady salary, predictable benefits, pension contributions.

It’s worked well. Until now. When you’re considering a new move, whether that’s because you’re forced to or by choice.

It requires you to build your own safety net. And that can feel daunting, especially when you’ve never had to do it before.

Building your own financial safety net is about having enough clarity and preparation that you can explore your next act – without panic.

And: It’s about taking back agency.

In this episode, I’ll share 4 practical steps to help you build that net, so you can move forward prepared and more confidently.

Disclaimer: Please note, I am not giving you specific financial advice. Once you’ve done a first stock take, I encourage you to seek out a professional financial advisor to help you make decisions suitable for your specific situation.

I was talking to a client recently about his family situation.

He told that, over time, he and his partner had slowly started living on parallel tracks. Not because of one dramatic event. Or because anyone stopped caring.

    Just
little decisions, repeated over the years. More travel for work. More pressure. More compromises that were meant to be temporary.

And slowly, their tracks drifted further apart. Different cities. Different routines. Different realities.

At one point, they were barely home together during the week. Sometimes not even on weekends. And when they were both home, everyone felt a bit like guests in each other’s lives.

What struck me most was this question one of their children asked him: “What are your priorities, Dad?”

    Quite a question.

Because most people don’t intentionally choose distance from the people they love. They just stop checking whether the life they are living still matches what matters most to them.

And I think many public sector leaders DRFIT into exactly this kind of misalignment – not only in family life, but in their relationship with themselves.

So today, I want to talk about priorities. And about whether your job is serving your life
 or consuming it.

When public sector leaders think about career change, they often picture a leap. A big, bold, all-or-nothing move.

They imagine it’s about leaving everything behind
and hoping the next thing works out. And that image can feel risky and scary.

    Because

    What if it doesn’t work?
What if you lose what you’ve built?
What if you make the wrong decision?

    So instead of moving
you stay where you are. Because it feels safer.

But career change doesn’t have to be a blind leap.

In fact, when you build a smart career transition strategy, it is a series of small, manageable and deliberate steps.

In this episode of the Space To Shift Your Career podcast, I share 3 ways to manage the risks that come with changing careers.

Have a listen and find out how to avoid leaping blindly.

There’s a sentence I hear often in career change conversations with public sector leaders. It usually comes a little hesitantly.

    “I’m just
not very good at selling myself.”

And when that thought is there, a lot of things don’t happen: You don’t speak about what you want. You don’t share what you’re capable of.

You don’t lack experience or value. But you hesitate to shout about it because you don’t want to come across as bragging, pushy or - God forbid - salesy.

The interesting part is this: most public sector leaders are unusually good at communicating.

    You do it when

managing different internal and external stakeholdersbuilding relationships across sectors, maybe even languages and cultures, and navigating complex and often difficult conversations

So the issue isn’t your ability. It’s how you perceive the idea of “selling yourself”.

    Let’s talk about that.

“I don’t fit into my role anymore.”

A public sector leader said this to me recently.

“On paper, everything looks fine. The salary is not great, but the benefits are ok and the stability is much better than in other sectors. But I feel like I’m pretending.

I push myself to show up the way I used to – positively, enthusiastically, can-do attitude. But it doesn’t come naturally to me anymore.

I can’t imagine doing this for the next 5, let alone 10 years. I feel like I've plateaued.”

And then they said something that really stayed with me:

“I want to feel inspired again. I want work where I can bring my full self to the table. Where I can use my strengths, do good work and see the impact I’m having. Is that too much to ask?”

If you’re listening to this and something in you is saying, “That’s me
”

Then this episode is for you.

You know something needs to change for you to feel alive again.

You have some ideas, questions, maybe even a sense of what you want next in your career and life.

    And
you also know: “I should probably talk to some people.”

It’s not like you don’t have a network. You do. In fact, an extended one. Both professionally and personally.

    But something holds you back.

    You might think:

“I don’t want to bother them.”
“But I’m not asking them for a job, so what’s the point?”
    “What if word gets out?”

    So you don’t reach out.

And without realising it, another year goes by...

In this episode, I talk about a mindset shift to help you overcome your concerns.

And I share 6 questions (out of the 14 questions I use with my clients) you can ask in your conversations to get valuable data for your career shift.

There’s a phrase out there that always makes me cringe a little.

    “Secret sauce.”

You’ve probably seen or heard it before. The one thing that will change everything - IF you pay for it.

I’ve never really liked that idea.

Because when you’re sitting there, wondering what on earth to do next with your career, the last thing you need is another magic solution being dangled in front of you.

You need something practical. Not the answer, but something you can actually use.

So today, I’m going to share with you one of the most powerful coaching questions I use with my clients.

Because I’ve seen what happens when people actually sit with it. It shifts something.

And if you let it, it might just shift something FOR YOU too.

There is this moment public sector leaders don’t talk about a lot.

It’s not burnout in the way we usually think about it.

You're not exhausted from working too many hours. Not overwhelmed because you can’t cope.

You’re experienced. Trusted. Respected. You know what you're doing.

But something has shifted for you.

Maybe you find yourself sitting in meetings, listening to conversations you’ve heard a hundred times before

Working on initiatives that once felt important

And then this questions pops up in your mind: “What’s the point of this?”

    That thought is uncomfortable.

Because this is the role you once wanted. Maybe even worked really hard to get into.

So why does it suddenly feel
 empty?

Let’s explore what’s going on here.

Imagine you’ve spent years building a specialised toolkit.

You’ve used it in high-pressure situations. You know which tool to reach for when things get messy. You’ve solved problems others couldn’t.

Now imagine you walk into a completely different environment

And suddenly... none of your tools are labelled anymore. They’re all still there. But they don’t look quite the same in this new context.

    So you hesitate.

You think: “Maybe I need a whole new set of tools for this.”

But what if that’s not true?

What if the real challenge isn’t that you lack the tools

But that no one has shown you how to use them differently?

That’s exactly what I see happening with public sector leaders considering a career change.

In this episode, I want to help you recognise 3 powerful skills you already have – and how they can carry you through your career shift.

Imagine you’re standing on a lookout, scanning the horizon with a pair of binoculars.

At first, everything looks a bit blurry. So you adjust the focus.

Suddenly, certain things become sharp and clear
while others fade into the background.

Now here’s the interesting part: What you see isn’t just about what’s out there. It’s about how you’ve adjusted the lens.

    The same landscape
 but a completely different view.

When it comes to their career, many public sector leaders don’t realise they’re looking through a default lens.

They don’t realise that they can adjust their lens.

So they keep seeing the same kinds of roles. The same organisations. The same options.

In this episode, I show you how to adjust your lens by creating your own career decision metrics. So you can evaluate your options with clarity and confidence. And notice new ones you might not have spotted before.

At some point in my work with public sector leaders exploring their next career move, someone always asks me, sometimes half-joking, sometimes half panicking:

“What am I going to do with my life?”

That is such a BIG question. And big questions feel HEAVY.

Your career influences where you live, how much you earn, how you structure your days, the people you surround yourself with, and the impact you feel you you're making. Of course, it feels stressful not to have a clear answer.

But when I sit with public sector leaders in that moment, I often notice the stress isn’t really about not knowing. It’s about what they THINK not knowing says about them.

In this episode, I talk about 3 uncertainty traps to avoid to help you feel more at ease with not-knowing.

On the other side is work that energises you. That aligns with who you are now and how you want to contribute in future.

    The problem?

Changing careers can feel a bit like a divorce. But not just from a job.

It can feel like breaking up with a part of yourself.

The part that introduced you at conferences.
The part that signed emails with a certain title.
The part that felt proud when people asked: “So what do you do?”

When public sector leaders tell me they’re considering a career change, they say it feels like a confession.

Because it doesn’t just feel like leaving a role. It feels like letting go of who they’ve been for years, for decades. And THAT can feel existential.

In this episode, I talk about why career change can feel intense on an identity level, and how you can navigate that transition with more clarity and self-compassion.

Many public sector leaders feel guilty for wanting something different, even when their work no longer lights them up.

They stay in roles not because they still love them. But because they feel loyal.

It’s easy to get excited about work on Mondays because what you do is right up your alley. You don’t have to go through the motions or re-invent wheels.

How can you make sure you are changing into YOUR ideal career?

You allow yourself to make space to reconnect with yourself - and to think things through properly.

Give yourself permission to go on a journey to EXPLORE, DREAM and DISCOVER: Where you have come from. Who you are now. And how you want to contribute in future.

As a public sector leader, you don’t make big decisions just based on vibes. You work with evidence.

You don’t just throw ideas around casually. You use frameworks, analysis, robust processes.

So when I say: “Just tap into your creativity about your future
” you’ll probably think it sounds a bit ... fluffy.

But creativity isn’t about doing something vague or impractical.

It’s an essential part of the exploration process.

It’s the phase where you step back and ask: What else could be possible?

Where you go wide before narrowing down.

Because if you don’t allow yourself to explore new ideas, you’ll only ever choose from the options you already know.

And that’s exactly where a lot of us get stuck.

In this episode, I talk about why creativity is an essential tool for exploring exciting career options aligned with who you are now.

And I share 3 steps to help public sector leaders tap into their own creativity.

Like a template that’s been copied and pasted for years.

No one remembers any more who actually wrote it originally. But everyone keeps using it - because they’ve always used it.

It once served a purpose. It reduced risk. Avoided embarrassment. Helped things run smoothly and efficiently.

But over time, that familiar old template can turn into a handbrake.

In this episode of Space to Shift Your Career, we’ll explore what happens when old templates shape your career decisions.

I’ll talk about the ‘What If’ script and how stories about failure - that many of us are still living by - can hold us back from going after what we actually want in our career and life.

As a public sector leader, you are used to working on wicked problems that don’t have easy answers.

Think back to the last time you led through a complex piece of work in uncertain conditions.

You didn’t have the perfect brief. You and your team just got on with it.

You gathered information. You tested assumptions. And you adjusted as you went.

And yet, when it comes to their own career, many public sector leaders do the opposite.

They wait for clarity before acting. For certainty before experimenting. For the lightning-bolt that makes everything obvious.

Are you waiting for that moment too?

In this episode of the Space To Shift Your Career podcast, I talk about why that moment rarely comes – and what to do instead.
