Kenneth C. Davis is the author of Donât Know Much AboutÂź History, which spent 35 consecutive weeks on The New York Times bestseller list, and gave rise to the Donât Know Much AboutÂź series of books and audios, which has a combined in-print total of some 4.7-million copies.
In September 2020, Donât Know Much AboutÂź History: Anniversary Edition was released by HarperCollins. A revised, updated, and expanded edition of the book that started the series thirty years ago, it presents a complete survey of American history, from before the arrival of Columbus in 1492 right through the events of the past decade âfrom 9/11 through the election of Barack Obama and the first years of his administration. This 30th anniversary edition included a new preface, âFrom the Era of Broken Trust to the Era of Broken Democracy.â
Davis is also the author of the New York Times bestseller Americaâs Hidden History: Untold Tales of the First Pilgrims, Fighting Women, and Forgotten Founders Who Shaped a Nation.
In September 2016, his book IN THE SHADOW OF LIBERTY: The Hidden History of Slavery, Four Presidents, and Five Black Lives was published to critical acclaim. In May 2018, MORE DEADLY THAN WAR: The Hidden History of the Spanish Flu and The First World War was published. In October 2020, STRONGMAN: The Rise of Five Dictators and the Fall of Democracy was released. In November 2022, Scribner published Great Short Books: A Year of ReadingâBriefly.
For more than 30 years, Kenneth C. Davis has proven that Americans donât hate history, just the dull version they slept through in class.
But many of them want to know now because their kids are asking them questions they canât answer. Davisâs approach is to refresh us on the subjects we should have learned in school. He does it by busting myths, setting the record straight, and always remembering that fun is not a four-letter word.

âąDavis has spoken about teaching history to teachersâ groups, such as the National Council for the Social Studies, and state and regional Social Studies conferences in Florida, New York, Maine, Connecticut, Vermont, and Massachusetts.

He regularly visits schools, and has spoken at such venues as the American Museum of Natural History, the New-York Historical Society, the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia, James Madisonâs Montpelier, James Monroeâs Ash-Lawn Highland, and the Smithsonian Institution. Allison Jaslow graduated from the University of Central Missouri and Wentworth Military Academy and Junior College, both of which she attended on ROTC scholarship, before entering active duty in the United States Army. She has served on the Board of Directors for Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America, was a founding Director on the Board of the 2LT Richard W. Collins III Foundation, and was the first and only woman on the Board of Trustees for Wentworth Military Academy. Jaslow is a Term Member of the Council on Foreign Relations, a charter member of the National Parks Conservation Assn.âs Veterans Council, and was named both an Aspen Institute Ideas Festival Scholar and Aspen Security Forum Scholar. For her military service, Jaslowâs awards include the Bronze Star Medal and the Army Commendation Medal with a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster.
Allison Jaslow is the CEO of Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America, an Iraq War Veteran, and a dedicated public servant.
Nationally, Jaslow is recognized as a leading voice on the impact of the military-civilian divide on our political system and as an authority on the unique challenges faced by women in the military. A former Army Captain, Jaslow is also a seasoned political and communications strategist, serving on the staff of several Members of Congress, and as a White House communications aide. Sheâs a former Executive Director of Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA), the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC), is a co-Founder of Operation Liberty and has recently served as an Adjunct Professor of the Practice at Duke University.
When she was previously Executive Director of IAVA, Jaslow led a national campaign to increase recognition of, and support for, women veterans. The âShe Who Borne the Battleâ campaign boldly targeted the Department of Veterans Affairsâ gender exclusive motto and put the needs of women veterans on the map â and in the headlines. Jaslow also oversaw the organizationâs successful campaigns to block over $4 billion in cuts to veteran education benefits, and to reverse the Defense Departmentâs efforts to claw back bonuses paid to California National Guardsman. Jaslow was instrumental in orchestrating the first-ever âCommander in Chief Forumâ in partnership with NBC, ensuring issues important to the military community remained front and center during the 2016 presidential campaign. The forum drew over 15 million viewers.
Professional background: Prior to joining IAVA, Jaslow built a reputation as a leader, trusted advisor and innovative political strategist in Washington and on campaigns across the country. She served as Chief of Staff to Illinois Congresswoman Cheri Bustos, after leading Bustosâ successful campaign to unseat an incumbent Member of Congress in what has since become a bellwether region for the success of both political parties. Jaslow also served as a communications aide in the White House, as Press Secretary for former Virginia Senator and decorated Vietnam veteran Jim Webb and in leadership roles for various other Members of Congress.
Jaslow has twice testified before Congress and made appearances on national news programs including NBCâs Today Show, CNNâs Anderson Cooper 360, MSNBCâs Rachel Maddow Show, and the CBS Evening News, where she speaks on issues ranging from national politics to our national security and the military-civilian divide. She has contributed to The New York Times, The Washington Post, CNN Opinion and Marie Claire in addition to other national publications. Jaslow has also worked closely with the entertainment industry, leading impact partnerships with several noteworthy films including Warner Brothersâ Dunkirk, Netflixâs War Machine, and Blood Stripe, an independent film which depicts a woman Marineâs transition from combat to civilian life.

Eric J. Segall graduated from Emory University, Phi Beta Kappa 27 and summa cum laude, and from Vanderbilt Law School, where he was the research editor for the Law Review and member of Order of the Coif. He clerked for the Chief Judge Charles Moye Jr. for the Northern District of Georgia, and Albert J. Henderson of the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals. After his clerkships, Segall worked for Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher and the U.S. Department of Justice, before joining the Georgia State faculty in 1991. Segall teaches federal courts and constitutional law I and II. He is the author of the books Originalism as Faith and Supreme Myths: Why the Supreme Court is not a Court and its Justices are not Judges. His articles on constitutional law have appeared in, among others, the Harvard Law Review Forum, the Stanford Law Review On Line, the UCLA Law Review, the George Washington Law Review, the Washington University Law Review, the University of Pennsylvania Journal of Constitutional Law, the Northwestern University Law Review Colloquy, and Constitutional Commentary among many others. From instructional assistants to cafeteria workers to custodians, bus drivers, secretaries, and more, MSEA has a proven track record of helping you win decent wages, better working conditions, and more respect for the important role you play every day at your school or worksite.
Education support professionals (ESP) are the backbone of every public school in the state. Their dedication to the total student learning experience is seen every day in noisy buses, bright hallways, busy classrooms, welcoming school offices, and bustling cafeterias.
Our education support members include paraeducators, administrative assistants, custodians, bus drivers, security and technology staff, food service workers, and other school employees vital to student and school success.
Nationally, support professionals make up more than 40 percent of the total K-12 education workforce and more than 80 percent live in the same school districts where they work. In Maryland and across the nation, ESPs are a critically important part of the school community.
Education support professionals take care of our children every day and make sure they have the tools they need to succeed in our schools and classrooms.
FIGHTING FOR THE ESP BILL OF RIGHTSWith continuing staff shortages, escalating student behavioral challenges, increasing responÂsibilities, a continuing lack of respect, and the rising costs of healthcare benefits, ESPs are being asked to do moreâtoo often without the resources they need and the compensation they deserve. These are workload, morale, and stress issues that cause burnout and resignations.
Some school board members and community and state officials have refused time and again to recÂognize support staff and their conÂtributions or to provide adequate, living wages. While the Blueprint for Marylandâs Future provides funding to add staff in some ESP positions, there is more to do. With recruitment and retention so difficult, the welfare and safety of students and fellow staff is at risk.

I am a journalist and author with a solid track record of being prescient about changes in technology, institutions, and society in general. Iâve been covering tech & climate change, social movements, mental health, education and parenting for almost two decades.
Iâm a journalist who cares about young people and is fascinated by the future. Thatâs led me to cover education, technology, and now climate change. I started at 25 with the book Generation Debt about young peopleâs economic struggles. Iâve published four more books, most recently The Stolen Year: How Covid Changed Childrenâs Lives, And Where We Go Now. I spent 8 years covering education for NPR, where I launched Life Kit: Parenting, a successful podcast series about difficult conversations, and got to co-star with Cookie Monster in a video, which was a career and life highlight.
I quit my job at NPR in 2022 to focus on the intersection of kids and climate. I now work with the Aspen Instituteâs This Is Planet Ed initiative and the Climate Mental Health Network.
I live in Brooklyn with my husband and two children and Iâm extremely serious about having funâjoy is part of my spiritual practice. I go out dancing a few times a month and make fun costumes for Burning Man and Mardi Gras. I also garden, cook, go jogging and other extremely normal mom stuff.

RANDI WEINGARTEN is president of the 1.7 million-member AFT, which represents teachers; paraprofessionals and school-related personnel; higher education faculty and staff; nurses and other healthcare professionals; local, state and federal government employees; and early childhood educators. The AFT is dedicated to the belief that every person in America deserves the freedom to thrive, fueled by opportunity, justice and a voice in our democracy. This freedom is achieved through an economy that works for all, including the ability to form a union; great public schools and affordable higher education; healthcare as a right; retirement security; the right to vote and civil rights; a vibrant democracy; and safe, welcoming and healthy environments and communities. The AFT and its members advance these principles through community engagement, organizing, collective bargaining and political activism, and especially through membersâ workâwe care, fight, show up and vote.
Prior to her election as AFT president in 2008, Weingarten served for 11 years as president of the United Federation of Teachers, AFT Local 2, representing approximately 200,000 educators in the New York City public school system, as well as home child care providers and other workers in health, law and education. Weingarten is the recipient of many commendations; she was included in Washingtonianâs 2021 Washingtonâs Most Influential People, City & State New Yorkâs 2021 New York City Labor Power 100, and Washington Lifeâs 2018 Power 100 list of prominent leaders, and in 2017 received the Roosevelt Instituteâs FDR Distinguished Public Service Award. In 2013, the New York Observer named Weingarten one of the most influential New Yorkers of the past 25 years.
Weingarten has led the AFTâs efforts to strengthen public education for all children and to address the crisis in the teaching profession caused by deep disinvestment and the deprofessionalization of teaching. Through the AFTâs Fund Our Future campaign, AFT members and leaders throughout the country are fighting for adequate investment in public education. Parents and many others have joined the AFTâs efforts to end the overuse and misuse of standardized tests, and to fixânot closeâstruggling schools, something Weingarten has advocated since her involvement in the creation of New York Cityâs Chancellorâs District, which dramatically improved achievement in what had been some of the cityâs lowest-performing schools.
Weingarten has launched major efforts to place real education reform high on the nationâs and her unionâs agendas. She created the AFT Innovation Fund, a groundbreaking initiative to support sustainable, innovative and collaborative education reform projects developed by members and their local unions. At Weingartenâs direction, the AFT developed a model to transform teacher evaluations from a way of simply rating teachers to a tool for continuous improvement and feedback. This model is used to align tenure and due process, so that tenure serves as a guarantee of fairness, not of a job for life. Weingarten led an AFT committee that called for all prospective teachers to meet a high entry standardâas in medicine or lawâso that theyâre prepared from the day they enter the classroom.
Weingarten oversaw the development of the AFTâs Quality Education Agenda, which advocates for reforms grounded in evidence, equity, scalability and sustainability. She promotes what she calls âsolution-driven unionismââan approach to collective bargaining and collective action that unites the interests of union members and those they serve in the pursuit of solutions that benefit students, schools and communities.
Under Weingartenâs leadership, the AFT continues to grow and expand its voice as a union of professionals. Nationwide, the AFT is the second-largest union of nurses and other health professionals and the largest higher education union, representing 230,000 higher education faculty, professional staff and graduate employees. Weingarten helped source millions of dollars of personal protective equipment for nurses and health professionals experiencing shortages as they served on the frontlines of the coronavirus pandemic.
Weingarten is an advocate for a New Deal for Higher Education, a campaign calling for substantial federal investment in higher education that would prioritize teaching, research and student supports; provide sustainable careers with professional voice for all faculty and staff; allow all students to attend regardless of ability to pay; create academic environments free of racism and other forms of bigotry; and cancel student debt.
The AFT provides our members tools and information they can use to manage their federal student loan debt, including having that debt forgiven, while advocating for solutions to the escalating cost of higher education, predatory loan practices, and terrible loan servicing that is holding people back.
The AFT and a broad array of parent and community partners across the country have collaborated on events to advance a community- and educator-driven agenda for public school reform.
Weingarten spearheaded the development of Share My Lesson, the United Statesâ largest free collection of lesson plans, classroom activities, and teaching strategies and resources created by educators, for educatorsâall at no cost. The AFT has a long-standing partnership with First Book, which has provided 5 million free and reduced-price books to children.
Weingarten and the AFT were asked to lead a partnership to transform McDowell County, W.Va., one of the poorest counties in the United States. The AFT has assembled more than 100 partners not only to improve the quality of education provided to children in the county, but to focus on jobs, transportation, recreation, housing, healthcare and social services. Weingarten believes the rural way of life is worth fighting for, and the AFTâs experience in McDowell County informs the work Weingarten is advancing to help rural communities thriveâthrough education, healthcare and economic opportunities.
The AFT supports the strategic establishment of 25,000 community schools where students and families can access tailored health services and social services in one place, and marginalized communities can have access to services and support. Weingarten views this goal as especially vital to help children, families and communities recover from the wide-ranging impacts of the coronavirus pandemic and ensuing recession.
When the COVID-19 crisis hit, the AFT worked with scientists and health professionals to develop a blueprint for reopening schools. The AFT continues to advocate for the funding and necessary testing and safety protocols to ensure in-person learning is safe.
During the Trump administration, Weingarten led the AFTâs efforts to oppose Trump and Betsy DeVosâ fervent attempts to defund and destabilize public education and to stand up to the administrationâs racist policies and attacks on facts and democracy.
In 2012-13, Weingarten served on an education reform commission convened by New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, which made a series of recommendations to improve teaching and learning. She was appointed to the Equity and Excellence Commission, a federal advisory committee chartered by Congress to examine and make recommendations concerning the disparities in educational opportunities that give rise to the achievement gap.
For 10 years, while president of the UFT, Weingarten chaired New York Cityâs Municipal Labor Committee, an umbrella organization for the cityâs 100-plus public sector unions, including those representing higher education and other public service employees. As chair of the MLC, she coordinated labor negotiations and bargaining for benefits on behalf of the MLC unionsâ 365,000 members.
From 1986 to 1998, Weingarten served as counsel to UFT President Sandra Feldman, taking a lead role in contract negotiations and enforcement, and in lawsuits in which the union fought for adequate school funding and building conditions. A teacher of history at Clara Barton High School in Brooklynâs Crown Heights neighborhood from 1991 to 1997, Weingarten helped her students win several state and national awards debating constitutional issues.
Elected as the local unionâs assistant secretary in 1995 and as treasurer two years later, she became UFT president after Feldman became president of the AFT. Weingarten was elected to her first full term as UFT president in 1998 and was re-elected three times.

Born in 1957 and raised in Rockland County, N.Y., Weingarten now resides in the Inwood neighborhood of New York City.

Austin is an expert on agricultural and antitrust policy. During the 2020 presidential campaign, he advised candidates Elizabeth Warren, Bernie Sanders, and Pete Buttigieg on agricultural policy before ultimately serving as Co-Chair of the Biden campaignâs Agriculture Antitrust Policy Committee. He is a Fellow of the Thurman Arnold Project at Yale University, an initiative that brings together faculty, students, and scholars to collaborate on research related to competition policy and antitrust enforcement. He also serves on the Board of Directors for Common Good Iowa and the Socially Responsible Agriculture Project. In 2022, The Advocate named him a "Champion of Pride.â
He recently published his debut book, Barons: Money, Power, and the Corruption of Americaâs Food Industry, which profiles a series of powerful magnates to illustrate the concentration of power in the American food system. The book has received universal acclaim. Publishers Weekly gave it a Starred Review and the host of Bloomberg's Odd Lots commended the book, remarking that âI have come away with a completely different idea of agriculture that I cannot unsee." The book has received praise from across the political spectrum, including a rave review from The American Conservative.
Austin also has a strong track record of organizing conferences and other forums to push the conversation forward on agriculture policy. He recently worked with the U.S. Department of Agriculture to organize a conference and publish a compendium at Yale Law School entitled âReforming Americaâs Food Retail Markets,â which explored competition issues in the nationâs food retail industry. He previously spearheaded other conferences at the Yale Law School, including âBig Ag & Antitrust: Competition Policy for a Sustainable and Humane Food System.â He also created & organized the "Heartland Forum" in Storm Lake, Iowa, the first candidate forum during the 2020 Democratic presidential primary process, which focused on the impacts of economic concentration in rural America.
âAustin is a 7th generation Iowan. His mother Kathy managed a beauty salon in his hometown of Cedar Rapids before opening her own bakery. His father Scott delivered and merchandised beer for a local, family-owned beer distributor. Austinâs passion for agriculture comes from spending weekends working with his Grandpa Frerick.
âHe has held a job since the age of 12, when he started working at the Cedar Rapids Gazette as a paperboy. He attended Grinnell College on merit scholarships and Pell Grants. While in college, Austin wrote two theses on corporate power in Iowaâs slaughterhouse communities. After being the first in his family to graduate from college, Austin attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison for graduate school on a full academic scholarship. He has since held positions at the Congressional Research Service and at the U.S. Department of Treasury, Office of Tax Analysis, where he published research on executive compensation, pharmaceutical corporate charity abuses, and the growth of concentration in the American economy.
