What’s the weirdest way someone could be tested to see if god is on their side? Dipping your hands in hot oil? Surviving a cobra bite? Perhaps by eating several raisins worth of bread and cheese and not choking?
Casey covers all the variety of ways that people tried to test to see if god was on the side of those who were on trial for crimes. The outcomes were simple, if you died, or didn’t heal in 3 days, you were guilty. If you survived or were miraculously healed, you were innocent.
Is there one you think you could survive? Or one that you think was the most interesting? Let us know.

Jeepers Creepers, Where’d You Get Those Peepers is something you’ll definitely be asking yourself after you look at a picture of Dennis DePue, a violent bully whose crime had a lasting effect in shaping the first scene of Jeepers Creepers. His whole family were made to be his victims, finally culminating in a very unfortunate morning with his ex-wife, Marylynn DePue.

It was the dancing plague, blood and priests, only 15(18). This is not what Dancing Queen was about (probably), but there was a woman who started dancing and couldn’t stop and she caused a craze that hit the whole village. We talk about (historical) facts, possible legends, divine causes and actual theories.

Was her sentence justified? Help us decide. Today Roya is covering the patreon chosen subject ‘She Wants Revenge’ as we talk about Penny Jackson and how she might just be the most quotable killer we have covered on this podcast (though Casey and I quote Denny Rader a lot ‘Oh Anna, why did you not appear?’).

So, it was the runner up for the poll and Roya thought it would be fun to cover two episodes from the poll. In honor of Valentine’s day, we’re talking about Henri Landru, The Bluebeard of Gambais. He’s a real piece of work that will make you maybe be a little relieved to not be in a relationship, or maybe give you pause when a proposal seems too good to be tru.

Abolitionists. The Gold Rush. Racism. Black Excellence. Casey tells us about the incredible life led by Mary Ellen Pleasant, a Black female abolitionist who moved out to California in search of fortune. Fortune that she definitely found. She was pretty incredible and we hope that everyone walks away with a new baddie to respect.

Did you grow up with a family that was very attached to your local weather people? Well, that was the case for a lot of people in the Scranton-Wilkes-Barre area of Pennsylvania in the 90s to 00s with Marisa Burke. She was the area’s It Girl news anchor whose romance with Mark Kandel took the whole viewing area by storm.
But the romance wouldn’t last forever when Mark had some bad habits that creeped into their lives and ruined their marriage and threatened to tarnish her reputation forever.

What do witches, Hitler and Aleister Crowley all have in common? Potentially one very particular ritual. Casey takes us back to World War II where a coven of witches gathered together to tell Hitler he couldn’t come. The crazy thing? It didn’t not work. But who actually did it?
Did it even happen? You decide

We know that you heard from Roya last, but this case was important so we wanted to interrupt our previously established episodes to get this in here while it’s super relevant. Earlier this year, an injustice was done in Florida (shocker) and there may be some time to help make a difference. If you would be so kind to take a few seconds to sign this petition if you feel moved by the situation, Roya and Casey would greatly appreciate it.

Roya takes Casey and you all on a trip through a fairly cut and dry crime, but is it all it seems to be? The assailant, while not justified, was also made to be a victim his entire life. Abuse and cruelty compounded with hereditary mental health struggles seemed to leave a young man with no chance at avoiding violence.
Also Roya was moving this episode so she was recording in an empty room, hence the difference in audio.

Who, or what, is eating all the roadkill in Wisconsin? Is it vultures or other carrion birds? Nah, it’s almost certainly a werewolf, dog man from hell and/or space. Leaving us with a lot of room to speculate and make wild connections between gray clouds being the product of aliens because aliens are also gray, Casey tells us about The Beast of Bray Road, an urban legend from Wisconsin. Or is it?

Roya takes the pod on a trip to yester-century as we talk about how the potato got to Europe, how it got so big in Germany and the king who was better at image rehab than any PR person in 2023, Frederick the Great.
