Dr. Simon Berrow, Chief Science Officer and acting CEO of the Irish Whale and Dolphin Group, talks with SWAN about PCBs, a category of pollutants banned in the 80's which are leaching out of landfills and into marine environments. Now, a critical mass of research shows that PCBs are dramatically reducing the viability of whale and dolphin calves. Can PCBs be stopped? Are whales and dolphins in danger of going extinct? Dr. Berrow answers these questions and more as he talks about how his research contributed to a recent report describing Europe-wide impacts of PCBs, and also how he deals with the existential threats facing some of the populations he has studied for the past twenty-five years.
