At age 13 Ben Purua had joined a gang, at age 16 he was convicted of manslaughter. Ben spent 5 years in prison and after working in the prison farm he discovered a love for farming. On his release from prison Ben eventually found work on a dairy farm and today he is the manager of a 540-cow farm near Tirau. He is the winner of the Central Plateau Dairy Manager of the Year competition and the 2024 Ahuwhenua Young Māori Farmer of the Year. Ben talks to Kent Johns about finding purpose and his love for the land and his family.
