  • Today on the Take on Board podcast Iā€™m speaking with Kate Larsen about what boards needs to think through in commenting on the war in Gaza.

Kate joined the board of Western Australia's youth arts peak membership organisation, Propel Youth Arts, when she was just 22 years old. Originally recruited for her marketing expertise, she was elected Chair after only a few meetings and helped lead the start-up organisation through its first few years of operation.

Since then, arts, cultural and not-for-profit governance is a topic that she have approached from all angles ā€“ as a consultant, board member, CEO and senior manager, arts worker and independent practitioner reporting to boards, committees, steering groups and funding panels across a broad range of governance and business frameworks, including state and national peak bodies, tiny charities, multi-purpose arts centres and government departments.

Kate Larsen is a writer, arts and cultural consultant with more than 25 yearsā€™ experience in the non-profit, government and cultural sectors in Australia, Asia and the United Kingdom. Kate is a thought-leader in the areas of governance and cultural leadership, workplace culture, online communities, and community-led practice.

  • This week on the Take on Board podcast, I am taking you through through the wind up of the Center for Sustainability leadership. I was chair of the board when we had to make some tough decisions.

So wind up, it's not a dirty word. In fact, winding up an organization, if done at the right time in the right way, is something that I believe boards can and should be proud of. It's a natural part of the business cycle of an organization.

  • Today is episode one of the Broads on Boards special series of theTake on Board podcast. This series explores the history of women on Boards in the place we now call Australia. So itā€™s fitting to kick off the discussion with an exploration of indigenous governance. So, today Iā€™m speaking with Michelle Deshong about indigenous governance.

Michelle is a Kuku Yalanji women with extensive experience in the governance. She is currently Co-Chair of Supply Nation and Council member for AIATSIS.

Michelle was awarded a Churchill Fellowship, in 2017, to 'research and apply best practice on Indigenous governance and leadership models'. Her study involved immersive visits to diverse First Nations communities and institutions. The primary objective was to investigate and analyze various leadership and governance models.

This research project uncovered a spectrum of self-government, sovereignty, and development approaches within these communities and provided insights into the potential adaptation and implementation of research findings and best practices within the Australian context. The research also included concepts of nation building, cultural governance, sovereignty, and identity, all of which were explored in detail within the report.

Following the study, Michelle integrated key findings from the Fellowship into the work of the Australian Indigenous Governance Institute where she was CEO.  As you can hear, Michelle is an expert in first nations governance. In asking around who to speak to about this, everyone pointed me her way!
