  • Writer and journalist Merritt K joins us this week to talk about their new book, LAN Party: Inside the Multiplayer Revolution.

A collection of photographs, essays and vignettes documenting a short period in the late 90s and early 2000s, the book documents the rise of an internet culture driven by connectivity, created by young people with big computers and thousands of of cables. Merritt talks about the way LAN (Local Area Networks) influenced gaming culture and the industry at large, as well as the aesthetics associated with the LAN party – from skate clothes and rubber soled sneakers to fast food and energy drinks that are banned across most of Europe. We also talk about the unique element of the LAN party – its ability to marry the physical and the digital, and in doing so, creating a space where someone could participate in digital culture, in a real-life social environment.

Hussein talks to the writer and podcaster Jay Caspian Kang about his early memories of being on the internet, and how its shaped his thinking about life today. Jay talks about spending time on hip hop forums and participating in text-based rap battles, and how the New York blog culture of the 90s and 2000s took him from writing novels into long-form journalism. Jay also talks about his recent article in the New Yorker, which examines how an obscure surfing spot near his house became on online phenomena among amateurs, and how this change can explain the way online culture has subsumed political discourse, to the point where its now just people yelling at each other for reasons they can't quite explain.

  • Hussein and Phoebe talk to the journalist Vincent Bevins, whose most recent book, 'If We Burn: The Mass Protest Decade and the Missing Revolution' looks back on the protest movements that defined the 2010s, and asks why their successes were limited, and in some case, counter-reactive to their initial objectives. Vincent talks us through some of the major protests that defined the decade, and the influence of platform-based social media had on their organisational structures. We also talk about what the future of protesting may hold in a more hostile tech environment, and whether the internet as an organisational tool is more beneficial to right-wing activists, than those on the left. You can find Vincent's books here!https://www.publicaffairsbooks.com/titles/vincent-bevins/if-we-burn/9781541788985/https://housmans.com/product/if-we-burn-the-mass-protest-decade-and-the-missing-revolution-as-good-as-journalism-gets/

  • We’re joined by noted oafthroplogist and podcast host Thomas O’Mahony to talk about the slop of gym content on TikTok and YouTube, and what it can tell us about how men, in particularly, think about their bodies and their place in the world. We discuss how fitness content has changed in the past decade, why it’s become so hard to design a simple work out plan for yourself, and the extreme, bizarre ways fitness influencers are having to market themselves in a saturated market. Obviously we talk about the man who gets mad at all the bread at Tesco.

  • To discuss the recent Deliveroo and Ubereats strikes, we're joined by Dr Adam Badger, lecturer in economic geography at Newcastle University, whose work focusses on the platform economy, gig work and urban planning. We talk about Adam's time as a delivery worker and the ways apps have made the lives of drivers and cyclists more difficult, and even life-threatening. We also discuss how the increasing power given to platform economy companies have altered the physicality of cities, the effects it has had on housing and public services. Finally, we discuss how consumers can help workers as the apps continue to chase scale at the expense of their health and wellbeing.Donate to the Strike fund Adam mentions here!https://actionnetwork.org/fundraising/strike-hardship-fund-iwgb-couriers-logistics-branch

The film explores the final days of middle school for a young American girl, and her relationship to her family, her social circle as well as the alternative persona she has made for herself online. We discuss why this might be one of the few successful examples of how social media can be depicted on screen, how much of this derived from Burnham's own experiences on the platforms, and whether, in spite of its successes, it really does capture the lived experiences of young Americans.-------- Purchase Hannah's Book: 'Sofia Coppola: Forever Young' here: Sofia Coppola: Forever Young'

Ryan comes back on the podcast this week to explain Jimmy Donaldson's – aka "Mr Beast"- new antic, which seems to involve ignoring local government protocol in East Africa to build wells and electricity pylons. Though presented as an altruistic act, Ryan explains how these stunts feed into the expansive "Mr Beast" brand, at a time when it looks like Donaldson is running out of ideas. Ryan also explains Donaldson's failed attempts to be accepted by mainstream culture and how, despite his massive following, it seems unlikely he'll ever make a break into mainstream TV.

Please avoid this episode if these topics will be difficult or harmful to hear. This week, Hussein and Phoebe discuss all three episodes of the show 'Tiktok: Murder Gone Viral'. The conviction of mother-daughter killers Ansreen and Mahek Bukhari, the killing of Sania Khan, and the killing of Alexis Sharkey. The show attempts to draw a line between the three and show how virality on Tiktok affects the perception of both victims and killers. Again, we have several criticisms.

  • Returning guest, New Yorker columnist and author Kyle Chayka returns to the show to talk about his latest book, 'Filterworld: How Algorithms Flattened Culture'.

Kyle talks to us about the ways platforms have enforced and imposed varied layers of algorithms on nearly every aspect of our lives – resulting in a boring and mundane online experience, where even a simple search has become impossible. He also explains how this flattened internet culture impacts us in the real world too, particularly in cities and areas of natural beauty that are now curated for the purposes of taking instagram photos. But, Kyle reminds us that it's not impossible to break out of Filterworld – and, why fighting against it is more important than ever before.

  • Murtaza Hussain (@MazMHussain) joins us this week to talk about Rumi, the 13th century Islamic scholar and poet, whose writings are often mistranslated – even fabricated – in order to sell cheap merchandise on Etsy and Redbubble. Murtaza talks to us about the historical and religious context of Rumi and the epic poem, The Masnavi, as well as the long history of western translations of Rumi's work, particularly among 19th and 20th century Orientalists. We discuss the situations where Rumi's writings get lost in translation, and ultimately, why Rumi's work has consistently been a popular source of content across nearly every social media platform.
