  • This week on the 2000s pop music history podcast counting down the 40 biggest selling songs from this week 20 years ago
“it’s coming home...” by which I mean Three Lions is back on the chart for the (approximately) 28 millionth time. It is just one of the football tracks trying to knock Sandi Thom off the top spot, with Crazy Frog and a nasty piece of xenophobia backed by The Sun battling Baddiel, Skinner and The Lightning Seeds.

For those of you who actually prefer real 2000s pop music, we get Sugababes and The Streets both overwhelming with ballads, Morrissey going mental on his record company, and Duncan from Blue trying and failing to have a solo career.

This week’s episode features the following songs:

    The Automatic - Monster

Baddiel, Skinner & The Lightning Seeds - 3 Lions

    Beatfreakz - Somebody’s Watching Me

    Busta Rhymes - Touch It

Christina Milian feat. Young Jeezy - Say I

Crazy Frog - We Are the Champions (Ding a Dang Dong)

Depeche Mode - John the Revelator/Lilian

Duncan James - Sooner or Later

Embrace - World at Your Feet

The Feeling - Fill My Little World

    Gnarls Barkley - Crazy

Hope of the States - Sing It Out

Infernal - From Paris to Berlin

Keane - Is It Any Wonder

    The Kooks - Naive

LL Cool J feat. Jennifer Lopez - Control Myself

    Lordi - Hard Rock Hallelujah

Mariah Carey feat. Snoop Dogg - Say Somethin’

    Michael Jackson - Earth Song

Morrissey - The Youngest Was the Most Loved

    Nelly Furtado - Maneater

Nerina Pallot - Everybody’s Gone to War

Oakenfold feat. Brittany Murphy - Faster Kill Pussycat

Ordinary Boys and Lady Sovereign - Nine2Five

    Shayne Ward - No Promises

Stan Boardman - Stan’s World Cup Song

The Streets - Never Went to Church

    Sugababes - Follow Me Home

Talksport Allstars - We’re England (Tom Hark)

Tonedef Allstars - Who Do You Think You Are Kidding Jurgen Klinsmann?

  • The UK singles charts giveth and they taketh away. So this week 20 years ago, they gave us one of the best song of the 2006, from one of the biggest and best comebacks in pop music history...but they also gave us football-themed rewriting of Tony Christie’s Amarillo. • “SOS please someone help me. It’s not healthy for me to feel this way” about a pop song. But that’s just how I feel about Rihanna’s SOS, one of the true starmaking tracks of the decade. Which of course means it’s probably going to be beat by a drippy ballad from Shayne Ward off of that X Factor. So the 2000s charts go.

Do Rihanna and Shayne Ward have what it takes to knock Gnarls Barkley off the top, or will it be the job of Gorillaz, Infernal, Fall Out Boy, Hard-Fi or Jamie Foxx. Find out as we deep dive into another week on the 2006 charts.

Which pop stars has MULTIPLE family members in prison for murder? Which Danish band is basically forced into doing an England World Cup song? And which singer had to present a TV show with Holly Willoughby where every presenter had to be barefoot. Find out as we tell another set of tales from 2000s music, in the only music history podcast that every episode counts down the top 40 singles chart from this week 20 years ago.

  • This week 20 years ago on the pop music charts...the British record buying public goes Craaaaaaaayyyyyyyzzzaaaaaaayyyyyyyy for Danger Mouse and Cee-Lo’s Gnarls Barkley project while gossip-lovers everywhere wonder about what Mike Skinner and Cheryl Cole might have got involved in.

Elsewhere, more nails are put in the landfill indie coffin as The Automatic and Milburn debut and we get two of the strangest novelty records we’ve heard so far in our journey through the UK top 40s of the 2000s.All this and more on the pop music history/nostalgia podcast where every week we’re reliving the 40 biggest selling songs from this week 20 years ago and telling the story of all the new releases.

  • This week on the podcast telling the stories of the biggest songs from this week 20 year ago
This is a baffling week on the 2000s charts for me. Why is Kelly Clarkson being beaten by a less good version of herself literally using the same songwriter? How could the pop music industry fumble the singles from Girls Aloud’s best album so badly? Why don’t the British record buying public appreciate Beverley Knight and Massive Attack more? And maybe most importantly of all...why do those three wise men get a semi by the sea?

All of these questions about 2006 pop will (hopefully) be answered in our latest episode alongside the following tracks:

Arctic Monkeys - When the Sun Goes Down

    Battle - Tendency

Beverley Knight - Piece of My Heart

Be Your Own Pet - Adventure

Fall Out Boy - Sugar We’re Going Down

    The Feeling - Sewn

Girls Aloud - Whole Lotta History

    Hi-Tack - Say Say Say (Waiting 4 U)

    Hilary Duff - Fly

    Jack Johnson - Better Together

James Blunt - Goodbye My Lover

    James Blunt - Wisemen
