Birthdays today for Geri Allen (with a newly released duo concert with Kurt Rosenwinkel) and Chick Corea who takes in the theme in a duo with Stefano Bollani and takes out the show with Armando's Rhumba from the new release of his very last concert in Florida in 2020.

Continuing our retrospective of the late Sonny Rollins on this afternoon's edition of The A-Trane Radio Program. We'll sketch his interactions and mutual admirations between Sonny & John Coltrane with a rare Sonny performance of a Coltrane composition Naima!
Following last week's 1950s highlights, we pickup with recordings with Don Cherry, Coleman Hawkins/Paul Bley, Jim Hall and Oliver Nelson (Alfie's Theme!) through the sixties. And walk through some of his best Milestone recordings in the 1970s along with his Rolling Stones guest spot and some live highlights throughout!
Sonny loved to do stream-of-consciousness performances turning tunes inside out, tossing out quotes and producing an amazing free flow of imagination for extended performances! Celebrating the legacy of the great Sonny Rollins on this afternoon's edition of The A-Trane Radio Program! So much so that this will be part one covering mostly 1950s classic recordings but it will include a great concert that Sonny did for Coastal Jazz back in March of 1992 at the Vancouver East Cultural Centre in the second half of the show. We'll even throw in a legacy Name those Tunes from a Sonny cadenza contest!

Buncha previews on this afternoon's edition of The A-Trane Radio Program with music by Christian McBride and Ursa Major featuring the inestimable Nicole Glover coming to the BlueShore Financial Centre for the Performing Arts at Capilano University this Wednesday at the behest of our friends over at Infidels Jazz with an opening set from Arvind Ramdas. The Hard Rubber Orchestra is featuring New Music from Young Composers Anna Webber, Matt Choboter and Noah Franche-Nolan at the SFU Goldcorp Centre - we'll feature music by all 3 with a set dedicated to Anna Webber that includes music from John Hollenbeck's fun quartet GEORGE and performances from the Webber-Morris Big Band.
Birthdays abound - Sun Ra takes in the theme to observe the 114th anniversary of his arrival on the planet and our opening set takes a nod to the Centenary of Miles Davis this week with films & live music at the VIFF Theatre on Sunday & Tuesday (more Infidelism!).
We'll have nods to Anthony Stanco and Angela Verbrugge/ Ray Gallon who are at Frankie's this weekend - the latter duo kicking off a Canadian tour. And finish with a nod to the tragic passing of cellist Cris Derksen.

This afternoon's edition of The A-Trane Radio Program is entirely handed over to a celebration of the music and life of musician, educator, and all-round great gal Kate Hammett-Vaughan. Although she had struggled for some years, she never lost her spirit and positive outlook on life so many of us were surprised to hear that she had passed away last week.
The theme is the only track not by Kate - it comes from one of her musical heroes, Ella Fitzgerald recorded live in Berlin in 1961 with Lou Levy on the piano.
The bulk of the show comes from two concerts which gives us the opportunity to not only hear her music but also hear her talking about it.
The first comes from a Garbo's Hat concert at Presentation House in North Vancouver featuring her long-time collaborators Graham Ord & Paul Blaney in January of 2017. The second comes from a Vancouver International Jazz Festival concert which closed the Canada Day festivities at Performance Works in 2015. That features Chris Gestrin, Jon Bentley, André Lachance and Tom Foster. Those two concerts give a taste of the span of her artistry from straight ahead (but personal) interpretation to some fearless experimentation and vocal artistry.
We'll fill it out with some of my personal favorites and unusual gems. Much love to her family, friends, fans and students particularly her husband Guy Smith who took such good care of her, and the Queens she left behind - Karin Plato and Jennifer Scott.

Although Keith Jarrett is a legendary improviser, he is also a formidable composer and on this afternoon's edition of The A-Trane Radio Program, we'll celebrate his performance of his compositions and other interpretations by Don Byron with Drew Gress, Ariel Pocock with Julian Lage, Branford Marsalis, Chet Atkins (!), Turboprop led by Ernesto Cervini, Chucho Valdés Oficial with Jay Rodriguez, Gary Burton, John Scofield, Noah Haidu and others!
Also a feature for harpist Zeena Parkins & percussionist William Winant who bring their tremendous Modesty of the Magic Thing project to the Western Front tomorrow night.
Gerry Mulligan takes in the theme and then we dive into an examination of Coltrane changes to give context to the Record Store Day release of the first of Frank Tiberi's recordings of live Coltrane. Those live tracks - Giant Steps and the reharmonization of How High the Moon known as Satellite - are a preview of the Tiberi Tapes box set to be released in the fall.
I heard the sad news of the passing of my old friend Kate Hammett-Vaughan yesterday afternoon and I'm planning an extended feature to commemorate her and her music on next week's show.

Just some musical fun on this afternoon's edition of The A-Trane Radio Program, lotsa birthdays with nods to Duke's last week (an extended 1949 arrangement of the theme with the orchestra gets us going), Ambrose Akinmusire, Shirley Horn, the late Carlos Ward, Kate Hammett-Vaughan, James Newton and an oblique recognition of the centenary last week of Chicago impresario Joe Segal whose Jazz Showcase archives are being mined by Zev Feldman for a series of Record Store Day releases. Today's feature is a tremendous Yusef Lateef quartet which includes Kenny Barron from 1975 - Alight upon the Lake!
A preview of the new project Goodbye Strawberry Hill from Sharon Minemoto that tells her family's story from the incarceration and separation of her family and the Canadians of Japanese heritage in the Second World War to their resilience and optimism of the present day. Her quartet's performance at the Anvil Theatre in New West tomorrow evening (May 2nd) will also feature a screening of a short documentary about the project - highly recommended!
Also kicking off the Miles centenary celebrations this month with the Birth of the Birth of the Cool - the 1948 Miles Davis Tuba Band concerts that preceded Miles legendary collaboration with Gil Evans and others. A number of Miles Centenary concerts in Vancouver this month (many presented by Infidels Jazz) will touch on some of this great material!
We'll also hear from Fred Frith who will do a rare solo performance at the Revue Stage this Sunday (that Infidel certainly gets around!) and Anna Webber whose music will be featured by John Korsrud's Hard Rubber Orchestra later this month!

Celebrating the Centenary of the great Randy Weston on this afternoon's edition of The A-Trane Radio Program! Perhaps more than any other jazz musician of his era, he connected his music to the rhythms of Africa and the legacy of Black civilizations from around the world!
Drawing from his autobiography African Rhythms (composed by him and arranged by Willard Jenkins) we'll take a sweep across his multi-faceted career from a rare RnB sideman gig with the Clovers to his collaborations with Master Gnawa musicians of Morocco and beyond with many of his masterpieces including Uhuru Africa, Blue Moses, Spirits of our Ancestors and more! (Too much for one show!)
We'll also sample 3 new releases which came out to commemorate the centenary including Randy Weston and Monty Alexander together!

Celebrating the recent birthday of one of our living jazz elders on The A-Trane Radio Program this afternoon - George Coleman is still cookin' at 91 as his recent gig at Smalls Jazz Club demonstrates! We'll take a sweep across his career from his first recording with Lee Morgan in 1957 to his most recent release (still on the charts) George Coleman With Strings.
Other birthdays include Roy Haynes (with Phineas Newborn to take in the theme) and Blue Mitchell. Preview sets for Dálava at the Zameen Art House tonight and Tord Gustavsen's trio at Christchurch on Tuesday.
Brand new single from Sharon Minemoto was released today and it gives us a glimpse of the story of her family's displacement in the Japanese-Canadian internment of the Second World War.

It's somehow ironic that Women get shortchanged again with a 23 hour International Women's Day!
Celebrating the music of great Jazz Women on this afternoon's International Women's Day edition of The A-Trane Radio Program - of course, we celebrate great music by Women all year but it's always fun to take a theme and to run with it to hear some great music. In previous years, I've mixed contemporary and historical recordings by Women but we're mainly concentrating on currently active practitioners today and recent releases wherever possible!
We'll hear music from Anais Reno who takes in the theme, Alice Coltrane, Alina Bzhezhinska, Lakecia Benjamin, Nala Sinephro with Nubya Garcia, Chelsea Carmichael, Brandee Younger with Courtney Bryant, and Muriel Grossman. A set featuring the members of Artemis - Renee Rosnes, a new release from Ingrid Jensen, Nicole Glover, Noriko Ueda and Allison Miller. A preview set for DominiqueFils-Aimé who is at the Chan Centre for the Performing Arts tomorrow night and The Ostara Project doing a free concert tonight at the West Vancouver Memorial Library and returning for a gig in June. Brand new releases from Melissa Aldana with Cecile McLorin Salvant, the Maria Schneider Orchestra and Monika Herzig. A happy birthday to Ayelet Rose Gottlieb which is followed by Kris Davis, Alexa Tarantino and Kate Wyatt. And we finish with an oblique happy birthday to Wes Montgomery from Emily Remler recorded live in 1988.

On this afternoon's edition of The A-Trane Radio Program we're celebrating the centenary today of the great Belgian musician Bobby Jaspar who played with the greatest musicians of the era back in his day but is little spoken about today. Among others we'll hear him with John Coltrane & Mal Waldron, with his wife Blossom Dearie, in JJ Johnson's group, with Miles Davis, Herbie Mann, Toshiko Akiyoshi, Donald Byrd, Wynton Kelly, a rare vocal performance from Kenny Burrell, Chet Baker and one of his last performances with fellow Belgian guitarist Rene Thomas at Ronnie Scott's.
Some previews include the Infidels Jazz Presents: Sun Ra Arkestra at The Pearl (taking in the theme from a rare Saturn performance in 1977), some paranormal adventures from Mike Rud, some smokin' B3 from Michael Blake, and some Monk from Arvind Ramdas!

Besides being World Radio Day, this is Socan Reporting Week which is a perfect reason to feature great Canadian Music on this (almost) All-Canadian edition of The A-Trane Radio Program! Keith Hartshorn-Walton took in a low-brass flavoured version of the theme.
Our first Canadian feature is a rundown of the Jazz Juno Nominees for this year: Anthony D'Alessandro, Aretha Tillotson, Justin Gray, Renee Rosnes, and Nancy Walker for Jazz Album of the Year Solo. Then Steve Holt, Alexis Baro, the Shuffle Demons, the CODE Quartet, and the Winnipeg Jazz Orchestra (with Jill Townsend) for Jazz Album of the Year Group. Then Ale Avery Nunez, Alex Samaras, the Atlantic Jazz Collective (featuring Norma Winstone), Caity Gyorgy, and Laura Anglade for Jazz Album of the Year Vocal!
Our second feature of the afternoon is this weekend's 6th Annual edition of Jazz at the Bolt, the festival organized by Cory Weeds and Tim Reinert/ Infidels Jazz at the Shadbolt Centre for the Arts. Music from the Vancouver Jazz Orchestra, Champian Fulton, Jacob Chung, Madeleine Elkins, Brandon Oscar Suarez, Julian Borkowski (featured with Neil Gray), The Bill Coon Double Quartet, Ralph A. On this afternoon's edition of The A-Trane Radio Program, the first half of the show will be handed over to a retrospective of the late Richie Beirach who passed away earlier this week. We'll hear him in many contexts across his career including with his long-time collaborator Dave Liebman (Richie's visits to Vancouver were mostly in the context of their working quartet Quest), in all-star trios and solo. The late Ian McDougall, who passed away the same day as Richie, takes in the theme with his regular collaborators including Oliver Gannon.
We'll also have a quick Grammy rundown in advance of the awards this weekend that includes Lakecia Benjamin, Chick Corea, Nicole Zuraitis, Sullivan Fortner, Michael Mayo, Arturo O'Farrill (playing Carla Bley's last commissioned work), Laila Biali, The Sun Ra Arkestra (also coming to Vancouver in February courtesy of our friends at Infidels Jazz), and Branford Marsalis doing the music of Keith Jarrett.
That last one doubles as part of a preview of Chris Gestrin doing Jarrett's music tonight at Pyatt Hall (those Infidels again!), then other preview this week for Thomas Marriott (tomorrow night at Frankie's) and Ayelet Rose Gottlieb (workshops this week culminating in a show at Tyrant Studios next Thursday). We'll hear him in multiple contexts including his solo recordings, with the Paul Winter Consort, the long-standing quartet Oregon, a guest appearance with Weather Report and collaborations with Jan Garbarek, Gary Burton (birthday today!), Azimuth, Gary Peacock, Paolo Fresu and others.
