  • There seems to be a lack of high-quality leadership in the world today. While intelligence is important, having applicable experiences and being in the trenches are even more vital.

Becoming a high-quality leader means being able to make decisions, being adaptable, communicating clearly, having integrity, and taking ownership. • Do you have a purpose or a passion in your life? Is it difficult to find your purpose? In one word: yes. Purpose must be cultivated, not “found.” Cultivating purpose is hard. You’ll have to put in your time, energy, and dedication to changing the narrative and taking action.

On today’s episode of The Art of Masculinity, Johnny talks about what purpose and passion are, and how they are different. He talks about what society’s views on men’s obligation, purpose (or if we’re even allowed to have any), and duties are. How have these views changed over the years? Is it changing for the better or for worse? Johnny answers these questions, and talks–in depth–about how purpose is qualified for men, and what this soft society has done to it.

  • On today’s episode, Johnny chats with artist Mitchell Coffman. They talk about Michell’s artwork and his unique focus on the military. He’s had a strong connection with the military his whole life and he works hard to make sure he can tell the story of these strong, selfless men. The military mentality and inspiration have bled into his artwork and lifestyle. It shows through his work, his views on improving his craft, and in how he interacts with people. Johnny and Mitchell also bond over their shared view on dedication and the frustrating state of talk-over-action that is so prevalent these days.

Leveraging a rich legacy of artistic influence, Mitchel Coffman is a New York City-based, award-winning independent artist passionate about storytelling. Art has always been a profound love of his, cultivated by the dream that his father, an illustrator, never saw realized. Driven by his father’s unfulfilled aspirations, Coffman embarked on a journey to actualize his artistic dreams.

Coffman’s artistic foundation was shaped by working alongside skilled professionals such as animator Walter Storozuk during his formative years. Later, in graduate school, Coffman was a studio apprentice to the esteemed master painter Jorge Alvarez. The diverse teachings from these two mentors uniquely shaped Coffman’s artistic style. Coffman’s practice blends tradition and innovation. He aspires to create work that echoes the depth of his artistic journey. You can find out more about him on his website and Instagram.

  • If you had to decide between an easy shortcut or choosing a more difficult but correct route, which path would you take? How often do you cut corners when you know no one is looking? How are you improving your life (even in the smallest ways)?

Today, Johnny talks about what integrity means to him and why it is the best foundation when you’re building a ladder to your dreams. He also talks about why it only takes a little effort (done consistently) to start building those healthy habits which lead to maintaining a high level of integrity. Integrity is something we all need to take seriously. It can be so easy to slip-up when there are so many distractions out there.

Johnny uses a ton of different examples (the rabbit hole of binge-watching TV, being coached versus making decisions yourself, team sports, etc.) to show how you can flex your integrity every day. When you exercise that muscle, you’re showing the world–and yourself–that you’re taking your life seriously and that you know how to make the right decisions; whether you’re facing something small or if you’re confronted with a big project.

The most frustrating part of what Sean Strickland said is his direct influence on the public. What are the actions of this influencer and MMA fighter teaching the youth of America? We are all influencers to a degree, but it’s men like Jimmy (who show integrity, determination, inner, and outer strength) that show us what it means to be masculine.

  • What is something you’re uncomfortable with? Are you okay with residing in stagnancy? Have you been told that competition is toxic?

In this episode, Johnny talks about how we can use competition to “uplevel” our lives. He uses two real-life examples of how he is challenging and pushing himself out of his comfort zone. These examples (pickleball tournaments and speaking competitions) have pushed him into an uncomfortable place so he can always strive for improvement.

As men, we are always competing against other people, either openly or in our heads. But more than that, we’re constantly competing against ourselves. We are our own worst and most determined opponents and–if we can positively harness that–we can use that inner competitiveness to motivate us to be better, stronger, and more powerful. Listen in to hear why, what, and how you can steer your competitive mindset in a more positive direction.

So what is it, guys? What are you going to do to challenge yourselves?

Today on The Art of Masculinity:

  • In today’s episode, Johnny talks with Brent Snodgrass. They focus on an aspect of masculinity that isn’t always accepted by all men: religion. As men, we’re coerced to look and act in certain ways by the media and society. Sometimes, we’re also forced to believe in certain things. Society has told us should only believe in something when there’s proof of it, which can cause problems for those of us who want to follow a more religious path. Brett talks about why and how a religious way of life is a good way to find out about yourself, your happiness, and how it can lead to a fulfilling life.

Brett Snodgrass has been a real estate investor for over 15 years. He specializes in wholesaling, whole-tailing, creative financing, and business scaling. His team at SIMPLE WHOLESALING buys and sells 250+ properties per year and builds passive income streams by creating more than 50 creative financing deals per year. He is part of the real estate mastermind group The Collective Genius, and he loves to give back to the community by supporting missions and non-profit organizations like Transforming Futures and Agape International Missions. He also runs an entrepreneurial religious men’s group called Iron Deep.

If you want to connect with Brett directly, feel free to email him at [email protected].

  • Think about what you do when someone is giving you criticism. Do you tune them out? Do you talk back or try to defend yourself? Or do you sit quietly and try to see if their criticism applies to you and your life?

Today on The Art of Masculinity, Johnny talks about what good criticism is, how to take it, and how you can use it to improve your life. How does criticism fit into men’s lives? Does being critiqued mean you have a weakness? Johnny shares the biggest flaw we have when getting criticism as well as his experiences with receiving criticism well (and a few times when he didn’t). The key to getting better as men is to stay trainable and capable of improvement because we always have room to improve.

  • We have evolved, socially, to look at men as the protectors of their families. So, if we are vulnerable with our wives and children, will that expose them to weakness? It is healthy to show vulnerability but it is healthier and safer if we have the right outlets for it. Putting that burden onto your family will threaten the inherent dynamics within our families.

Today, Johnny talks about why it is important to find the right outlets for your vulnerability and what those healthy outlets are. He also talks about what our inherent roles are within our family and how we can put those roles at risk if we share too much with our wives and children. At the end of the day, it is our jobs to keep our families safe and we can only do that if we are taking these roles seriously.

Today on The Art of Masculinity:

  • Today, Johnny chats with Clint Davis about his new book, “Building Better Bridges,” and what modern parenting should look like. What does it mean to truly model for our children? Parenting can be tough, especially if we’re learning and dealing with our trauma. Clint tells us what we need to do to ensure we don’t pass that trauma on to our children and the next generation.

We have to set our ego aside to show empathy and model the behaviors we want our children to attain. We have to repair the wounds we have with our children, so they don’t turn into the traumas we have from our parents. Don’t let pride stop you. Clint also suggests that we challenge it and check our pride at the door. They also discuss how we can model behavior for our kids, without imposing or projecting our trauma. We need to build bridges to save our kids.

Clint Davis is an army veteran, ordained minister, and licensed psychotherapist. He owns Clint Davis Counseling and Integrative Wellness. He hosts the “Asking Why” podcast and is a best-selling author of his new book, "Building Better Bridges: A Guidebook to Having Difficult Conversations that Can Save Our Children." Check out his TED talk “The Sex Talks We Never Had, That Can Save Our Kids.” He also encourages listeners to call and email him at [email protected] to tell him your stories and ask him specific questions about your kids.

  • The world deserves a better caliber of man and we must give it to them. But who decides what that caliber is? Take a close look at what your standards are and what you think it looks like to be an embodied and aligned man.

Today Johnny talks about the roots of self-judgement, the flawed views of masculinity perpetuated by the media and our culture, and what you can do you reroute your normal neurological response to meeting your standards. Sometimes we are our harshest critics. It is important to have a high standard for yourself, but that standard should always be achievable and based on your values. Not the values that are placed on you by the media.

Pick up Johnny’s new book, Design the Man Within on Amazon. It’s a great book for men who are looking to start their journey of personal development, or for men who are just starting that journey and need a bit of guidance.
