Charles E. Gannon discusses At the End of the World, a novel set in the world of John Ringo’s Black Tide Rising series. In the book, a sailing ship filled with teenagers on a science voyage to the South Seas is caught in the midst of an eat-your-neighbor plague that hits the world and causes the collapse of civilization. There’s a whip-smart young narrator from a disadvantaged background, and a crusty, ghoul-faced adult sea captain leading and teaching them who may be more than he at first seems. Woods, Nye, Coe, and Johnson discuss their stories in the book, the excellence of the small Chattanooga SF convention Libertycon, which is put on in the spirit of the great, convivial cons of old, and the legacy of Libertycon founder, Richard T. Bolgeo, known to all as Uncle Timmy. It’s a flintlock fantasy/alternate history featuring Benjamin Franklin in a magically charged America and Europe. In Caller of Lightning, Ben Franklin discovers an inherent magic within himself connected to the key he electrified in his kite experiment. The novel then details Franklin’s coming into his own as a wizard of power, working for the incipient America coming into being; and David Weber’s Uncompromising Honor, Part 18.

Furey discusses his Baen.com web site article “The Bridge of Sighs: Are We What Might Have Been?” which asks the question of whether we are living in a simulation created by our descendants. It seemed like a trivial idea to Furey at first, but upon consideration, he became convinced the possibility that we are part of a nested simulation might very well approach 100 percent. Rob Furey is a biologist specializing in social spiders, and Professor of Integrative Sciences at Harrisburg University, and serves as assistant provost there; and David Weber’s Uncompromising Honor, Part 10.
