Episode 161 is a humbling, wonderful conversation with Dr. Michael Yellow Bird. Dr. Yellowbird works with Tribal and Indigenous Peoples to bring mindfulness and neurodecolonization approaches to these communities for the purposes of healing and improving wellness. I use neuroscience research to examine how mindfulness approaches and traditional Indigenous contemplative practices can train the mind and positively change the structure and function of the brain. I study how experiences and perceptions change the brain (neuroplasticity); shape our DNA and affect the expression of our genes; activate different brain regions, change our brain waves, shape specialized brain cells such as mirror neurons; and alter our neurotransmitters and modulators. I use my work as a means of translating the neuroscience of mindfulness and neurodecolonization to Tribal and Indigenous communities so they can understand why and how mindfulness and Indigenous contemplative practices work.

Episode 160 features a conversation with Kim Trottier, founder of Culturally Committed. The purpose of Culturally Committed is threefold: first, it creates a pathway for client feedback, so providers can learn what Indigenous Peoples want and need to create trusting relationships. Second, it provides a list of providers who are demonstrating a desire to offer culturally safe services, so clients can choose offices where they know cultural safety is a priority. Finally, they offer ongoing learning opportunities, facilitated by mentors, Elders, and experts in the field of cultural safety and humility, with the intention of supporting providers in expanding their knowledge around cultural practices, barriers to care, and to educate on what safe care looks and feels like to Indigenous Peoples

Episode 153 features a conversation with the intervening President Denisha Gingles, and Vice-President Cammie Williams of the Black Applied Behavior Analysts, Inc. which paused operations in July 2023 following two unfortunate situations that occurred at our 2023 conference in Detroit: a physical and verbal attack, as well as homophobic statements made from one of their members to another. Among other things, these incidents exposed how far BABA had drifted from its founding purpose: the uplift of the entire Black community in the behavior analytic space. In this episode, Denisha and Cammie outline the history of BABA from its beginnings and their path toward transformative healing. As well they share exciting news about their upcoming mini-conference, BLACK CON!
Stay tuned to the Behaviour Speak Podcast over the next few months as we share mini-episodes highlighting some of the positive experiences of attendees at the 2023 conference.

In Episode 151 Ben chats with Dr. Amanda Young. Dr. Young is Hidatsa of MHA Nation as well as an Anishinaabe of Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa, both reservations of North Dakota. Amanda received her PhD in Counseling Psychologist from Oklahoma State in 2022. Her current research embraces the stories of Native women who are leaders within the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls Movement in what’s colonially known as the U.S. She is hopeful this research will help rewrite the narrative of Native women, as we are more than a statistic. Currently, Dr. Young is completing her Postdoctoral Fellowship at Two Feathers Native American Family Services in Humboldt County, CA
Correction: Near the end of the episode Dr. Young referenced two recent murdered relatives, Cole Brings Plenty and Trey Allen Glass who was mistakenly named "Terry Cross" in the podcast.

In Episode 148, Ben chats with Deb Fernando, who is quite possibly the only Indigenous behaviour analyst in all of Australia. Deb is a proud Bigambul, Gomeroi woman with strong connections to far northwest NSW within the Gamilaraay language nation. She has 30 years’ experience working with First Nations communities throughout Australia, including urban, rural, and remote locations.
Deb started her career as a chef, then worked in government organisation troubleshooting major problems in servicing First Nations people in remote communities.
She then went on to work with the University of South Australia where her team of researchers received the Vice Chancellors award for excellence in engaging in communities. Moving from SA back to New South Wales she began working with the SAX institute as the Study manager to progress their First Nations child health research project in urban and rural children's health. Within a short time, they established the project in five major Aboriginal Medical services, which identified the gaps in services to First Nations children within these areas. One highlight was establishing ongoing specialized services such as hearing and speech therapy for First Nations families. At the age of 50 Deb embarked on my academic career completing my BA and Honors in psychological science at Southern Cross University, continuing her studies in 2020 she completed a Master's in Education in Applied Behavioural Analysis at Monash University. Whilst studying she started to work as a positive behavioural therapist practitioner with The Center for Positive Behavioural support where she held a position as a Behavioural support practitioner. Over the years Deb has been looking and searching for the most appropriate services for First Nations peoples to assist in closing the gap between First Nations people and Non-First Nations peoples. Deb has a passion for applied behaviour analysis and therapies that take a holistic approach to addressing the needs of First Nations families. Due to the impacts of cultural loading, she received over her working career she ended her journey of working for others and started her own business “FeatherWay Road”. Here Deb collaborates with families to establish an environment where everyone feels included, supported, and empowered. Working with neurodiverse children, she embraces their unique strengths, their culture, and challenges to cultivate an inclusive and supportive learning environment. ABA has been one of the many highlights of her academic career. I have seen and experienced the solid sustainable results this has on families and individuals.

In Episode 146, Ben chats with Hilary Amado, an American behaviour analyst living with her psychoanalyst Brazillian husband in Brasil. The conversation starts with a little brevity as Hilary shares some of the interesting conversations she and her husband have about caring for their children as behavior analysis and psychoanalysis philosophies collide. As a founding professional advisory board member of the International Behavior Analysis Organization (IBAO), Hilary has a wealth of knowledge when it comes to providing behavior analytic services outside of North America/Turtle Island and shares her experiences providing those services and the barriers behavior analysts face trying to provide services. The last part of the conversation is focused on Hilary's work providing English instruction services using the principles of behavior analysis.
