The left has a known habit of self-sabotage. Weâve either experienced this firsthand or witnessed it from the outside, but the activists generally have a hard time beating the circular firing squad allegations. Movement organizer and strategist Yotam Marom helps us understand why in his new book For Louder Days: Beyond a Politics of Powerlessness. Yotam is a man of the movement, and very much a street soldier. You wonât see him helming a political campaign, but you might get arrested next to him at a demonstration.
Through personal stories of his own organizing, Yotam looks at how social movements in the U.S. often shy away from emboldening leaders and crafting effective strategy. Despite being passionate about confronting the oligarchs and warmongers, weâre not always as good at confronting one another in order to make strategic choices. Could it be that the lessons from the 60s and 70s still cast a shadow over our work, or is it an over-focus on things like personal identity rather than group goals?
Yotam talks about his exhilarating experiences at Occupy Wall St, but also the comedown of recognizing how quickly the movement could be repressed. He shares how he has helped organizations from CAAV in New York, to Sunrise Movement, to The Uncommitted Movement choose âwinning over being correctâ, and discusses how our movements need to grow more powerful so that we can each be powerful within them.
Finally, the two talk about how the issue of Gaza and Israel-Palestine reaffirmed the importance of how our movements must be guided by love and solidarity. Get this book and be captivated by the personal yet political lessons Yotam offers up.

Memo Torres used to write about food. Now, each day with the help of his team at local Los Angeles outlet LA Taco, he writes about the out-of-shape police rejects with alimony payments known as ICE.
In this interview, Memo discusses how ICE is changing its tactics in the face of community resistance, and shuffled the deck of stooges from Kristi Noem to Markwayne Mullin. When it comes to a political response, Torres explains that despite personally meeting with Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, little has been done to stop these militias in City Hall.

It has been six years since the uprising over the murder of George Floyd, and yet police are still killing Americans at a terrifying rate. Less than 3 percent of the officers involved in these deaths are ever charged with a crime. And now, thereâs ICE.
On this supporter-exclusive episode of Hot Button, weâre joined by activist and educator Dr. Melina who has been on the frontlines of the Los Angeles Black Lives Matter Grassroots ever since 2014. She sits down with Francesca to talk about how the movement has changed shape and her hopes for the future.
How did the media warp the BLM narrative and create broader backlash? What were the missteps within the organization and organizers that led to an ugly fallout? How are chapters of Black Lives Matter Grassroots still working around the country to get justice?
Abdullah was in the formative meetings of BLM and has thoughts on how those running the 501c3 âhijackedâ the money and the good name of Black Lives Matter.

How can a city both be one of the most expensive in the world and broke AF? Somethingâs clearly not right. Los Angeles is home to 3.8 million people and 1 million taquerias. And every issue the country faces, from housing shortages to busted social services, Los Angeles has it in spades. So whatâs going on and whereâs all the taxpayer money going?
Francesca sat down with the person who oversees Los Angelesâ money: Kenneth Mejia. Heâs a long-time housing rights activist and certified public accountant, and since 2022 when he became Los Angelesâ controller, has been putting LAâs finances on blast. Through social media, dashboards on homelessness and strategic billboards, Kenneth is showing Angelenos just where their money is going. Spoiler: itâs mostly to the cops.
They discuss everything from the exorbitant police budget that includes half a billion dollars in liability claims, to why homelessness services are not being delivered to the some 40,000 unhoused Angelenos, and the very flawed approach to âaffordable housingâ. Palestine 36, a new film from Watermelon Pictures, dramatizes a pivotal moment in the country, when Palestinians rose up en masse against British partition and the loss of their land to Zionist forces.
A hundred years later, the song remains the same. Filmmaker Annemarie Jacir joins Francesca to talk about what her moving piece of historical fiction tells us about early colonialism of Palestine, and how anti-Arab racism has always been central to the program of ethnic cleansing.
