This interview is with Murray Emery, owner and head recording engineer of “Crooks Hollow Studio” in Calgary Alberta, Canada. Also, he is an accomplished musician and the founding member of the rock band “Prisoner”. Murray is a graduate of the Broadcast System Technologies program at the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology known as SAIT. He is also a graduate of the Ontario Institute of Audio Recording Technology program referred to as OIART.
This interview starts with Murray describing growing up and his experiences working for his dad’s construction company. This interview is with Andy Read a man of many talents. This is an amazing story that deals with self-discovery leading to transformation which results in Andy living an amazing life.
The interview starts with Andy growing up in England and joining the military at the age of 19. He gives a very detailed description of his experiences within the force which lasted 9 years. In leaving the army, he describes how he and his family adjusted to civilian life. This is an eye-opener as the transformation was not easy.
With the skills he acquired from the military, we talk about his first employment opportunity outside the military which was at the Welding Institute in Cambridge, England. Also, at this time he describes the process it took to establish immigrant status that would enable him and his family to move to Canada.

Andy spent three years in this position as he describes to the one day where he was being laid off. In doing so he became self-employed doing contract work within the same area. Tom Huntington refers to himself as an “Adult in Training” and, in listening to this podcast the audience will appreciate where he is coming from. In addition to being a retired attorney, Tom considers himself to be a human nature science geek. He is very interested in how the brain and mind work and what motivates us. This is evident throughout this interview as there is a lot of self-reflection which is vital to all of us.
Tom takes the listener through his life coming from a privileged family setting, attending boarding school, and receiving a scholarship to some very prestigious universities. With a so-called “perfect life” set up for him, he attends Standford and describes what that was like and what transpired.
As the title suggests he is an adult in training and with that he is questioning his life and the choices he is making. As he describes, he leaves Stanford and joins the Peace Corps which sends him off to India to work as a farm aid. This part of the interview will inform the listener of what it is like to work and live in a third-world country as Tom provides a vivid picture of his experiences. His involvement with the Peace Crops is also talked about as well. It is worth noting that this is all taking place in the mid-60s as The Peace Crops was in its infancy and the issues that came with such a start-up are also discussed.
As his tenure closes with this venture, he moves back to the United States which is in the late 60s. He openly talks about the culture shock he faced leaving a third-world country and re-entering a modern society. In this interview, Gino outlines the experiences he had teaching and revamping the police foundation program at Niagara College. This segment of “The Career Guy” is with Ron Salahub. Ron is a certified journeyman automotive and heavy-duty mechanic. Also, he has an array of other credentials including a natural gas engine certification and an Alison Transmission designation.
In this interview, Ron takes us through his exciting and rewarding career in the mechanical industry. He talks about how he got into being a mechanic by working in a local gas station, which evolved into an apprenticeship eventually acquiring his journeyman in automotives. In doing so Ron provides a wealth of information on how apprenticeships work in the trades. Also, there is a fruitful discussion on how the automotive industry has changed and the direction that it may be headed.
With the changes that were and are still happening in the automotive sector, Ron explains how he took his mechanical experience into the oil field industry. He provides a good illustration of how he went about making this transition, and how developed his expertise in this industry eventually leading him into a management role. In this section of the interview, the listener will learn what working in the petroleum sector as a mechanic is like, highlighting the pros and cons.
To further his career Ron explains how he obtained his journeyman designation as a heavy-duty mechanic.
