STORY 1: Strickland wins fourth term in Georgia Senate

Georgia Senator Brian Strickland, a Republican, won reelection for District 42, securing 58.24% of the vote against Democrat Kacy D. Morgan. Strickland dominated in Walton and Morgan counties, while Morgan narrowly won in Henry and Newton counties. Strickland, first elected in 2018, chairs the Senate Judiciary Committee. In the House District 118 race, Republican Clint Crowe defeated Democrat Sharonda Bell with 66.78% of the vote. Crowe led in Butts and Monroe counties but trailed Bell slightly in Newton County.

STORY 2: UGA study: Nearly 6% of pregnant women report marijuana use

A University of Georgia study found that about 6% of pregnant women reported using marijuana in the last month, with many not recognizing its health risks. The study, published in The American Journal on Addictions, used data from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health. Among users, 70.9% perceived little risk, despite links to low birth weight and neurodevelopmental issues. Most users were in their first trimester, possibly using marijuana for nausea relief. Lead researcher Mohammad Rifat Haider emphasized the need for education on marijuana's risks during pregnancy and suggested that doctors address misconceptions and screen for substance use, especially in states where medical marijuana is legal.

STORY 3: Sheriff Brown wins Newton with widespread support

Incumbent Sheriff Ezell Brown won reelection in Newton County with 59.45% of the vote, defeating Republican challenger Justin Hipps. Brown, who carried most precincts, expressed gratitude for his fourth term, highlighting his commitment to justice and community. He praised the progress made in community programs and law enforcement practices. Brown also extended a conciliatory message to Hipps, emphasizing unity post-election. Hipps, an investigator with the Newton County District Attorney’s Office, campaigned on improving technology and staffing. He thanked supporters and valued the discussions initiated about the Sheriff's Office's future.

Report Criticizes Georgia's Limited Medicaid Expansion

Georgia Expands Digital Driver's License and ID Program. What We Know

Harris fends off 'garbage' fallout, Trump pushes 'cheating' claims

We’ll have these stories and more, coming up on your Georgia News Podcast and If you want community, local, and statewide news, we encourage you to listen and subscribe!

    Commercial: DRAKE (Drake Realty (Geoff)

Story 1: Report Criticizes Georgia's Limited Medicaid Expansion

Georgia's limited Medicaid expansion, Georgia Pathways, has enrolled only 4,231 people, far below the projected 25,000, due to complex enrollment processes and strict eligibility criteria. The program requires enrollees to complete 80 hours of work or other activities monthly, a unique requirement among states. Many face challenges with paperwork and fluctuating work hours affecting eligibility. A $10.7 million ad campaign was launched to raise awareness, but its impact is unclear. The Georgia Budget and Policy Institute suggests simplifying enrollment and expanding Medicaid coverage, though state leaders oppose full expansion due to cost concerns.

Story 2: Georgia Expands Digital Driver's License and ID Program. What We Know

The Georgia Department of Driver Services has expanded its Digital Driver's License and ID Program to include Samsung Wallet, allowing Samsung Galaxy users a secure and convenient way to manage their IDs. This integration enhances security and convenience, though currently, it's only valid at select TSA PreCheck checkpoints, like those at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. The digital ID is voluntary, free, and doesn't replace the physical ID, which is still required for law enforcement. Users can add their ID to Samsung Wallet through a simple process involving scanning their ID and a face scan for verification. More details are available on the DDS and Samsung websites.

Story 3: Harris fends off 'garbage' fallout, Trump pushes 'cheating' claims

In the final week of US election campaigning, Kamala Harris distanced herself from President Biden's controversial remarks about Trump supporters, emphasizing unity and respect for all voters. Harris campaigned in key battleground states, focusing on a positive vision for America's future and contrasting her leadership style with Trump's. Meanwhile, Trump, campaigning in North Carolina and Wisconsin, continued to claim election fraud and criticized Biden and Harris, framing them as out of touch with Americans. Both candidates are rallying support in a tense political climate, with Trump hinting at rejecting the election results if he loses.

Break: WHEELER FUNERAL HOME (08.08.24 WHEELER OBITS_FINAL)

Story 4: Peach Bowl and College Football Playoff Foundation Team Up For Makeover At Baggett Elementary

Baggett Elementary School in Lawrenceville received a $50,000 donation from the College Football Playoff Foundation, Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl, and School Specialty to revamp its STEM lab. The funds were used to create a vibrant, interactive learning space with new furniture and decorations. The updated lab was unveiled at a ribbon-cutting ceremony on October 16. This initiative is part of a broader mission by Peach Bowl, Inc. to support education, focusing on Title 1 schools needing renovation. Alongside Baggett, Lilburn Middle and Magill Elementary also benefited from similar grants, enhancing their media centers.

Story 5: Young Americans Christian Football Program On the Rise

Young Americans Christian School's football team is experiencing a resurgence as the 2024 season ends, boasting a 7-1 record and leading Region 1-AA in the Georgia Association of Private and Parochial Schools' new nine-man football format. Under Coach Josh Hailey, the team has grown to 26 players, a significant increase from previous years. Despite challenges like weather and a local fire, the team has thrived, led by standout players like seniors Jayden Sigur and Caleb Blunt. With a strong freshman class, Hailey aims to build a lasting program, eyeing a regional win and home-field playoff advantage.

Story 6: 'Jesse's Gift' Coming to Amazon Prime Video Thanksgiving Day

"Jesse's Gift," directed by Ken Merritt, debuts on Amazon Prime Video this Thanksgiving. Filmed in Cherokee County, the movie follows a singer-songwriter's journey from loss to redemption, inspired by Merritt's and his brother's real-life experiences. Michael Merritt stars in the film and composed its music. Originally a short film for a screenwriting class, it showcases various Georgia locations like Canton and Atlanta. The trailer is available on Off the Rail Productions' YouTube channel, and Michael Merritt's single and music video can be viewed online.

Story 7: Morgan Approves Safari Park Event Facility

The Morgan County Planning Commission approved an event facility at the Georgia Safari Conservation Park on Monticello Highway, located on 436 acres in unincorporated Morgan County. The park, which opened earlier this year, will develop the facility in phases, starting with open-air events. Traffic will use Monticello Highway, not Clack Road, addressing previous concerns. Additionally, the commission approved a zoning change for Latrice Franklin to place a manufactured home on her property, adjusting lot lines to meet requirements. Discussion on a proposed off-road vehicle course was postponed to November. All decisions await final approval from the Board of Commissioners.

    Commercial: DRAKE (Drake Realty (Geoff)

Story 1: Ossoff Bill Targets 'Hidden' Foster Care Placements

U.S. Sen. Jon Ossoff introduced a bipartisan bill to enhance federal oversight of state foster care systems, following a Senate subcommittee investigation into child abuse and neglect in Georgia's foster care. The bill, co-sponsored by Sen. John Cornyn, addresses "hidden" foster care placements, where children are informally placed with caregivers, often relatives, without court oversight. These placements aren't included in official foster care statistics. The legislation mandates states to report such cases to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, which must then report to Congress. The aim is to better protect foster children from abuse and trafficking.

Story 2: Trump stumps in Middle Georgia

Former President Donald Trump held a town hall in Zebulon, Georgia, focusing on religious themes and moderated by Lt. Gov. Burt Jones. Trump emphasized the importance of the upcoming election, pledging to tackle illegal immigration and reduce inflation through energy independence. He highlighted his past achievements in Israel and criticized ongoing legal challenges against him. Trump praised Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp for his hurricane response efforts. The event is part of Trump's campaign efforts in Georgia, a key battleground state, with Vice President Kamala Harris also campaigning there alongside Barack Obama and Bruce Springsteen.

Story 3: KSU Students Compete in Elevator Pitch Challenge

Emily Shelton, a Marketing and Professional Sales major at Kennesaw State University, won the 3rd Annual TK Elevator KSU Elevator Pitch Competition. She impressed judges with her innovative pitch, earning first place. The competition involved 24 KSU students presenting their personal brands to a panel of judges from the TKE sales team while riding Atlanta's fastest elevator to the 26th floor of TKE's Innovation and Qualification Center in the Cumberland area.

Story 4: Georgia Early Voters Continue Setting Records

Over 1.8 million Georgians voted early in the first week, with numbers expected to surpass 2 million by midday Wednesday, marking over 26% of the electorate. Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger highlighted Georgia's clean voter list, noting a citizenship audit found only 20 non-citizens among 8.2 million registered voters, whose registrations were canceled. Additionally, 156 suspected non-citizens were referred for investigation. Raffensperger praised Georgia's participation in the Electronic Registration Information Center (ERIC) for maintaining accurate voter rolls. Gabriel Sterling dismissed claims of vote-flipping by Dominion machines, affirming no evidence supports such theories. Early voting continues through November 1.

Story 5: Emory Seeks Rome, Calhoun Residents For PFAS Exposure Study

Emory University researchers are recruiting Rome and Calhoun residents for a study on PFAS chemical exposure. They aim to enroll 200 participants, collecting blood samples from those who've lived in the area for at least three years. PFAS, known as "forever chemicals," persist in the environment and human body, with past contamination from carpet companies affecting local rivers. Rome has since improved water filtration. The study will compare local PFAS blood levels to national averages and explore exposure sources, including water, cookware, and packaging. Results will guide potential further research or interventions based on community interest and findings.

Georgia Tech's Student-Athlete Advisory Board is launching the 24th annual Michael Isenhour Toy Drive in November, honoring its founder, Michael Isenhour, who started the drive in 2001 to help families affected by 9/11. Toy donations will be collected at Georgia Tech's basketball and football games in mid-November, benefiting the Atlanta Children’s Day Shelter. Fans are encouraged to bring new, unwrapped toys, with student-athletes collecting them at game entrances. Monetary donations can be made online via a QR code. Toys can also be shipped directly to Georgia Tech for those unable to attend the games.

Story 7: Coroner candidates talk about duties of the office

At a forum on Oct. 14, Newton County coroner candidates, incumbent Tommy Davis and challenger Kimberly L. Griggs, discussed their approaches to the role. Griggs, focusing on timely death certificate delivery, suggested hiring a forensic pathologist for the county. Davis, with extensive experience, explained delays often stem from autopsies by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation due to backlog. He emphasized the coroner's role in determining death causes and maintaining quick response times. Griggs highlighted her proactive approach in obtaining necessary information for death certificates. Both candidates addressed staffing and resource management within the coroner's office.

Story 1: Poll Shows Trump Still Leading Harris in Georgia

A recent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pee-ak.) University poll shows former President Donald Trump leading Vice President Kamala Harris in Georgia, with 52% to her 45% among likely voters. The poll, conducted from October 10-14, indicates Trump also leads Harris among independents, 49% to 42%. Both candidates' support aligns with their favorability ratings, with Trump viewed favorably by 51% and Harris by 44%. On key issues, voters believe Trump would handle the economy and immigration better, while Harris is favored on the abortion issue. Green and Libertarian candidates each received 1% support.

Story 2: UPDATE: ‘Too Much, Too Late’ Judge Tosses Ballot Hand Count in Cobb Elections Case

A Fulton Superior Court judge ruled against hand counting Election Day ballots in Georgia, citing potential "administrative chaos" so close to the election. Judge Robert McBurney struck down the rule, passed by the GOP-led State Election Board, at the request of Cobb County's Democratic-controlled board. The rule required ballots to be hand-counted by three poll workers per precinct, but McBurney argued it was too late to implement such changes without causing disorder. The decision doesn't affect other challenged rules, and the State Election Board may appeal. Another related case is pending in Fulton County.

Story 3: Cherokee County Looking to Improve Old Highway 5

Cherokee County, Holly Springs, and Woodstock are collaborating on road improvements for Old Highway 5. On October 15, the Cherokee County Board of Commissioners approved an intergovernmental agreement for concept planning from Ridgewalk Parkway to East Cherokee Drive. The county will manage a consultant to refine the Old Highway 5 corridor study, with costs shared among the county and cities. This planning is part of a broader effort to develop the I-575 and Sixes Road interchange area, which includes a 536-acre plan for land use and transportation improvements. The project aims to transform the area into a regional center with employment opportunities, addressing long-standing connectivity challenges. Completion is expected in 2025.

Additionally, customers can enjoy any-sized hot or iced coffee for 99 cents and a 10-pack of Timbits for $1. The Canadian coffee and bakery shop is known for its coffee, baked goods, and breakfast sandwiches.

Story 5: Wellington Park To Be Renamed After Late Scholar Rodney Andrews

Madison is honoring the late Dr. Rodney Andrews, a distinguished scholar and economics professor, by renaming Wellington Park after him. Over 500 people signed a petition for this change, recognizing the park's significance to Andrews during his childhood. The Madison Mayor and City Council unanimously approved the renaming, despite a policy requiring a five-year wait after a person's death. Andrews, who passed away at 47 in 2023, was celebrated for his academic achievements and community impact. The renaming aims to inspire future generations by commemorating his legacy and contributions.

The policy allows visitors to enjoy alcoholic beverages in specially branded cups while exploring the campus, excluding the Gas South Arena. This initiative aims to create a lively atmosphere, with officials emphasizing safety and responsible enjoyment. The policy reflects the district's commitment to being a vibrant entertainment hub.

Story 7: Holly Springs Police Arrest Man Accused of Taking Car with Child

A man named Joseph Avram, 48, was arrested and charged with attempting to steal a car with a child inside in Holly Springs. The incident occurred at the Hop-in Shell Gas Station on October 14. The child's mother chased the vehicle and removed Avram before he fled on foot. Police used video footage to identify him and tracked his cell phone to Atlanta, where he was apprehended near a Greyhound bus station. Avram faces charges of kidnapping and theft. Story 1: Georgians still feeling impacts of Helene as Milton brushes by

In Georgia, about 50,000 electric customers remain without power following Hurricane Helene, which caused 34 deaths and significant damage, particularly in rural areas. As Hurricane Milton approaches Florida, many evacuees are heading to Georgia, filling hotels and increasing traffic. Governor Brian Kemp noted available accommodations in cities like Albany and Atlanta, and state parks are open to RVs. Milton is expected to bring rain and winds to southeastern Georgia, with potential flash flooding in six counties. U.S. Sen. Jon Ossoff is advocating for federal disaster relief for Georgia farmers, citing significant agricultural losses from Helene.

Story 2: Judge rules Kemp doesn't have to investigate State Election Board members

A Fulton County Superior Court judge dismissed a lawsuit aiming to compel Governor Brian Kemp to hold an administrative hearing on removing three State Election Board members. The judge agreed with Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr's opinion that the plaintiffs lacked legal standing. The lawsuit, filed by State Sen. Nabilah Islam Parkes and others, challenged rule changes by the board's Republican members, which could delay or refuse election result certification. Democrats fear these changes could favor Trump in the upcoming election. Fair Fight's CEO criticized the ruling as a setback for voter accountability.

Story 3: Georgia Board Seeks Clearer Rules For Mass Voter Challenges

Georgia State Election Board officials plan to request clearer guidelines from lawmakers for maintaining accurate voter lists, following debates over mass voter challenges. The board seeks to make it harder for county election boards to dismiss these challenges without investigation. Early voting for the Nov. 5 election begins soon, with mock precincts set up in Floyd County for practice. The board's Executive Director, Mike Coan, noted that counties are dismissing challenges due to fear of lawsuits. The controversy stems from efforts to overturn the 2020 election results. A lawsuit to force Governor Kemp to investigate board members was dismissed.

The second annual Atlanta Dream x Bria Janelle Foundation Girls Skills Clinic will take place on Saturday, Oct. 19, at Newton High School. Sponsored by Emory Healthcare, this free clinic is open to girls in grades three through eight and runs from 9 a.m. to noon. The event aims to empower young girls by teaching basketball skills, featuring talks from Atlanta Dream staff, and offering a Q&A session on self-confidence and goal-setting. Parents must stay on-site and complete a waiver for participation. Registration is available online. Janelle, the clinic's organizer, focuses on youth empowerment and community development.

Story 5: Holly Springs Town Center Parking Deck in Final Development Phase

The Holly Springs Town Center parking deck is nearing completion, with the City Council approving a $861,309.90 change order for final work, including earthwork and wall construction. An additional $82,353 was approved for plumbing services and $10,323 for storm drains. These costs are covered by the Urban Redevelopment Agency Series 2023 bond. The three-level, 323-space parking deck is the first structure on the northern site and is expected to be finished this year. Future development phases include an amphitheater and new city hall, currently in the design phase with construction bids anticipated soon.

Rockdale County students will continue virtual learning until Friday, Oct. 18, due to a shelter-in-place advisory following the BioLab chemical fire. Originally set to return on Oct. 10, the advisory affects about half of the schools within a 2-mile radius of the site, active from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. daily. Consequently, all school buildings will remain closed, and district and school activities will be rescheduled.

Story 7: Board of Regents seeking to ban transgender women from college sports

The University System of Georgia Board of Regents voted to urge collegiate sports organizations to ban transgender women from women's sports, echoing a 2022 Georgia High School Association decision. This follows controversy from the 2022 NCAA Championships, where transgender swimmer Lia Thomas won a major event. The Board's resolution argues that transgender women could disadvantage biologically female athletes. Lt. Gov. Burt Jones plans to propose a 2025 bill to ban transgender women from sports at Georgia's public colleges. Opponents argue such bans discriminate against transgender students, who already face significant prejudice.

The report highlights the state's indifference to inmate safety and calls for urgent reforms. Story 4: Georgia voters to decide tax-related ballot questions

On November 5, Georgia voters will decide on two tax-related constitutional amendments and a statewide referendum focused on property tax relief. One amendment proposes capping local residential property tax assessment increases to the rate of inflation, with an opt-out option for local governments. This aims to prevent unexpected tax hikes due to rising home values. Another measure would raise the personal property tax exemption from $7,500 to $20,000, benefiting small businesses. Additionally, a proposed amendment seeks to establish a tax court in Georgia, staffed by judges with tax expertise, similar to the Statewide Business Court created in 2018.

Story 5: Cherokee Seeking More Input on Greenways and Trails Master Plan

Cherokee County is hosting a second round of public input meetings in October for its Greenways and Trails Master Plan. The plan aims to create a cohesive trail network by identifying potential locations, prioritizing connections, and allocating funding. The public can review and provide feedback on the draft trail network. Opportunities for input include in-person events at Canton First Friday, The Great Pumpkin Fest, and two open houses, as well as a virtual meeting on October 30. These sessions allow residents to engage with planners and provide feedback to refine the plan.

The event highlighted the importance of literacy, with Superintendent Dr. Virgil Cole and Assistant Superintendent Susan Tolbert emphasizing reading's role in shaping futures. High school students, inspired by teachers, established the Bulldog Readers Club to mentor younger students. STORY 1: Air Quality Monitoring Continues in Rockdale County

State and federal agencies, including the Georgia EPD and EPA, are monitoring air quality following the BioLab fire. Overnight monitoring detected chlorine levels above action thresholds, but efforts to neutralize the chemical are ongoing. The TAGA mobile lab is being used for real-time air quality monitoring. Weather changes may cause smoke and chlorine odors to settle in metro Atlanta, especially in the mornings. Residents are advised to limit outdoor activities, keep indoor air clean, and follow health precautions, especially if they have respiratory conditions. Chlorine levels are currently safe, but symptoms should be reported to health providers or the Georgia Poison Center.

STORY 2: GA Court of Appeals Rules in Favor of State in Rivian Zoning Lawsuit

The Georgia Court of Appeals ruled in favor of the State of Georgia in a lawsuit challenging the Rivian project, dismissing the case on procedural grounds rather than addressing zoning complaints. The court determined the lawsuit was a public lawsuit, and only one such lawsuit can be filed per project. The No2Rivian group, opposing the $5 billion Rivian EV plant, expressed disappointment as the zoning issues remain unresolved. The Georgia Department of Economic Development and the Joint Development Authority celebrated the ruling, emphasizing the prevention of further lawsuits. No2Rivian is consulting with legal advisors to explore future actions.

STORY 3: District Cleanup Events Set for October in Newton County

Keep Newton Beautiful (KNB) and Newton County commissioners are organizing District Cleanups in October, seeking volunteers to help remove roadside litter. The first event is on October 12 at Alcovy High School, followed by another on October 26 at Spring Hill Park. Volunteers will receive breakfast, supplies, and t-shirts before cleaning up local areas. KNB emphasizes the importance of litter prevention and community involvement, encouraging participation from individuals, families, and groups. Children under 12 must be supervised, and all participants must sign a release form. KNB also offers educational programs to promote a litter-free community.

STORY 4: Meth and Heroin Bust at Madison’s Historic Carter-Newton House

The historic Carter-Newton-Glover House in Madison, built in 1840, became the site of a drug bust when police discovered suspected methamphetamines and heroin. The homeowner, James "Jim" Glover, 61, and three other men were arrested. The incident began with a 911 hang-up call, leading officers to the house where they found drugs in plain sight. Glover, who bought the home in 2021 to renovate it, returned during the police visit and claimed the men had permission to be there. All four denied knowledge of the drugs. This isn't the first drug-related issue at the house, which has a history of such incidents. Glover was released on bail, and all face future court dates.

STORY 5: Newton Schools Superintendent Emphasizes Safety as #1 Objective

At a recent Safe Schools Forum, Newton County School System Superintendent Dr. Duke Bradley II emphasized that student and staff safety is the top priority, essential for achieving the district's goal of becoming the fastest improving in the state. Over the past three years, $24 million has been invested in safety measures, including controlled-access vestibules, classroom alarm systems, and school resource officers. Communication remains the primary defense strategy, with the "See something; say something" approach. The Board of Education is considering weapons detection systems, but logistical challenges exist. The district also focuses on mental health support and proactive measures to enhance overall safety.

    Commercial: DRAKE (Drake Realty (Geoff)

Story 1: Creative Solar Solutions to Preserve Georgia Farmland

At a state Senate study committee hearing, Jim Cooley from Georgia's Environmental Protection Division suggested creative solutions to mitigate the impact of solar farms on rural Georgia's farmland. Alternatives include placing solar projects on rooftops, industrial parks, brownfields, closed landfills, and coal plants. Cooley highlighted "agrovoltaics," where solar panels are co-located with farms to benefit both agriculture and energy production. Concerns about solar farms consuming farmland have risen, with a recent rejection of a large solar farm proposal in Houston County. The committee emphasized the need for accurate data on solar farm acreage to inform policy decisions.

Story 2: Lawsuits Aimed At State Election Board Piling Up

Several Georgia Democrats have filed a lawsuit to compel Governor Brian Kemp to hold a hearing on allegations that three Republican State Election Board members violated the law by implementing controversial election rule changes. These changes could allow local officials to delay or refuse election result certification, potentially affecting the outcome of the Nov. 5 elections. The lawsuit challenges provisions in Senate Bill 189, which allows private challenges to voter registrations and requires homeless individuals to use county registrar addresses. Critics argue these measures could disenfranchise vulnerable voters. The lawsuit emphasizes the need to uphold election integrity and law.

Story 3: Rockdale Clerk of Courts Janice Morris Sponsoring Two Breast Cancer Awareness Events

In observance of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Rockdale County Clerk Janice Morris announced two events to support breast cancer patients and survivors. The 2nd Annual "Walk a Mile in Their Shoes" event will take place on Oct. 4, encouraging participants to wear pink and walk a mile between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Additionally, a Karaoke Night with a Pink Out Costume Contest will be held at Chiquitos Cantina and Grill from 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. These events aim to provide hope and support for breast cancer survivors and fighters.

For the seventh consecutive year, Georgia public-school students outperformed the national average on the SAT, with a mean score of 1030 compared to the national average of 995. The class of 2024 scored 527 in Evidence-Based Reading and Writing and 503 in math, surpassing national averages of 507 and 488, respectively. State School Superintendent Richard Woods praised the students and their support systems for this achievement. However, Georgia's mean score dropped from 1045 last year, mirroring a national decline. SAT participation in Georgia increased to 52%, up from 50% last year.

Story 5: KSU Research Aims to Reduce Motor Vehicle Accidents

Kennesaw State University researchers, led by Assistant Professor Billy Kihei, are exploring how existing technology can enhance vehicle safety and reduce collisions. Sponsored by the National Science Foundation, the project focuses on Cellular Vehicle-to-Everything (C-V2X) technology, which enables vehicles to communicate and potentially prevent up to 80% of crashes involving non-impaired drivers. The research involves developing models and simulations to use C-V2X signals for passive sensing, detecting vehicles not equipped with the technology. The project aligns with KSU's new Ph.D. in Interdisciplinary Engineering, offering students hands-on experience in cutting-edge technology.

Located at the corner of First and Main Streets, this initiative aims to boost pedestrian traffic and support local businesses in Old Town. Ossoff Introduces Postmaster General Reform Act Georgia Lawmakers Get An Earful on Private Water Systems' High Rates US Fed makes aggressive rate cut, weeks before election

We’ll have these stories and more, coming up on your Georgia News Podcast and If you want community, local, and statewide news, we encourage you to listen and subscribe!

    Commercial: DRAKE

Story 1: Ossoff Introduces Postmaster General Reform Act

Sen. Jon Ossoff has introduced the Postmaster General Reform Act, which seeks to impose term limits and require Senate confirmation for the U.S. postmaster general. This move follows Ossoff's criticism of Postmaster General Louis DeJoy due to significant mail delivery delays in Georgia, particularly at a new distribution center in Fulton County, where only 36% of inbound mail was timely. The legislation proposes limiting the postmaster general to two consecutive five-year terms and reinstating Senate confirmation, arguing the role's significant impact warrants elected officials' oversight. This reform emerges amid persistent mail delivery issues in Georgia, despite DeJoy's restructuring efforts and subsequent corrective actions.

Story 2: Georgia Lawmakers Get An Earful on Private Water Systems' High Rates

Lake Oconee-area property owners have voiced concerns over high water rates charged by private systems like Piedmont Water Co., which ranks as Georgia's second-highest. Mike Hartman highlighted the exorbitant connection fees, advocating for regulation akin to municipal systems. Legislative efforts, led by Rep. Trey Rhodes, seek to impose oversight by the Georgia Public Service Commission, but have faced obstacles. Piedmont Water's COO, Brent Hurst, defended the rates, citing significant investments to meet seasonal irrigation demands. However, many attendees, including Rep. Debbie Buckner and business owner Jacob Fried, emphasized the need for regulatory oversight to ensure fair pricing, despite concerns about potential cost increases associated with PSC regulation.

Story 3: US Fed makes aggressive rate cut, weeks before election

The US Federal Reserve has cut its key lending rate by half a percentage point, marking its first reduction since the Covid pandemic. This decision, made just ahead of the November presidential election, aims to lower borrowing costs for consumers and businesses, impacting rates on mortgages and credit cards. The cut reflects the Fed’s confidence in achieving its inflation target while managing employment levels sustainably. Democratic candidate Kamala Harris may view the rate cut favorably as it bolsters President Joe Biden's economic record in her campaign against Republican Donald Trump. The Fed's move comes amid easing inflation and a cooling labor market, although the decision carries risks of reigniting inflation. Policymakers have also indicated further rate cuts this year and in 2025, highlighting a shift to a less restrictive monetary policy, with potential political ramifications given the focus on inflation and cost of living in the upcoming election.

Story 4: ‘What Happens Three Months From Now?’ Mental Health After Georgia High School Shooting

The tragic shooting at Apalachee High School has left the Winder community grappling with severe mental health challenges, with many residents experiencing panic attacks and anxiety. In response, local and regional mental health providers have mobilized to offer counseling and support, including a temporary recovery center and therapy sessions for post-traumatic stress disorder. Despite these efforts, there are significant concerns about the long-term availability of mental health resources, as Barrow County faces a shortage of providers and limited access to affordable care. This situation highlights broader systemic issues in Georgia, where many areas lack sufficient mental health services, exacerbated by the state's low ranking in mental health care access and the fact that it has not expanded Medicaid eligibility. The community's need for mental health support is expected to intensify as the immediate response subsides and students return to school, underscoring the urgent need for sustained mental health resources.

Story 5: Fly Betty to Play at West Milford Farm

Fly Betty, a popular six-member band known for playing dance and party music from the 70s to current hits, is set to perform at West Milford Farm on September 27. The concert, part of the farm's 2024 open-air concert series, will begin at 7:29 p.m., with doors opening at 6 p.m. Lawn tickets are available for $30, while front porch tables for four are priced at $200, and party barn tables for eight start at $250. Tickets can be purchased on the West Milford Farm website under the "Concerts" tab. Catering by Oakley’s Provisions will offer entrees ranging from $6 to $15, though attendees can bring their own food and drinks. Alcoholic beverages will not be sold on-site. All guests must be 21 or older. West Milford Farm is located at 7938 Ball Ground Road near Cumming, in east Cherokee County.

Story 6: Walz rallies young Ga voters after Vance appeals to evangelicals

Democratic vice presidential nominee Tim Walz visited Georgia to rally young voters for Kamala Harris ahead of the November 5 election. Speaking at venues like Georgia Tech and the Atlanta University Center Consortium, he emphasized issues appealing to young voters, including abortion access, LGBTQ rights, and student loan debt relief, framing these as matters of personal freedom. Walz highlighted Harris' platform on simplifying taxes for small businesses and addressed concerns over recent gun violence, stating it's a responsibility to protect citizens. His visit underscores Georgia's pivotal role in the election, as indicated by the close polls and recent visits from other VP candidates.

Story 7: Cherokee County Health Department Offering Breast Cancer Screening

The North Georgia Health District is organizing free breast cancer awareness and screening events in October to mark Breast Cancer Awareness Month. These events, held in Cherokee County, offer free breast exams, mammogram referrals for women aged 40 to 64, and Pap smears for those in need. The screenings are scheduled at the Woodstock Health Center on October 22-23 and at the Canton Health Center on October 22. Appointments are required, but walk-ins are welcome at the Canton location. The initiative emphasizes the importance of early detection, with educational resources and enrollment in the Breast and Cervical Cancer Program (BCCP) available, covering mammogram costs.

STORY 1: Fifth Newton Student Faces Charge after School Threat

In Newton County School System, a fifth student has been arrested for making threats against a school, students, or staff. A 13-year-old from Liberty Middle School was taken into custody after allegedly making threats on a school bus. This follows the arrest of a 12-year-old student for making electronic threats toward a school in Florida. Since early September, five students have been charged with terroristic threats, prompted by a school shooting at Apalachee High School in Barrow County. Sheriff Ezell Brown emphasized the seriousness of such threats, urging students and parents to understand the legal consequences. Superintendent Dr. Duke Bradley III stated that the school system collaborates with law enforcement to address threats and administer consequences, stressing that threatening behavior is prohibited and considered criminal.

STORY 2: Buckhead To Begin Work On Historic Town Hall

The renovation of Buckhead's Old Town Hall is set to start on Monday, September 23, with concerns about overgrown grass potentially hindering work. Nancy Brock from the Morgan County Landmarks Society emphasized the need for the grass to be trimmed to allow University of Georgia students access to the building's windows for the project. The building, a historic site built in 1910, is the town's only historic property and is included in the National Register of Historic Places. The renovation is supported by a $2,335 grant from the Morgan County Landmark Society, matched by the town. UGA students, under Professor Jim Smith, will lead the restoration of two windows as the project's first phase. Additionally, the town council accepted a $1,000 donation from Callidora Ranch for investment, planned for sidewalk repairs, scheduled a Christmas party for December 5, and set dates for cemetery cleanup.

STORY 3: Peachtree Academy FFA Student Meadow Joseph Brings Home Awards

Meadow Joseph, Peachtree Academy's first beef cattle exhibitor, made history with her impressive performance at the Gwinnett County Fair. She earned several top honors, including Grand Champion Angus Bull, Reserve Grand Champion Angus Bull, Grand Champion Angus Cow/Calf Pair, and Second Place Angus Heifer in its class. Additionally, Joseph excelled in the show ring, winning first place in Showmanship. Her dedication to her Angus herd and commitment to excellence have set a new benchmark for Peachtree Academy's FFA program, emphasizing the importance of agricultural education and hands-on learning for future success.

STORY 4: Morgan officials urge citizens to avoid paying tax bills via mail

Morgan County is experiencing postal service delays affecting property tax payments. Tax Commissioner Wendy Coe advises avoiding mail payments for upcoming property taxes due to these issues. Alternatives include using a secure drop-box on Hancock Street in Madison, paying in-person at the tax office, utilizing pay-by-phone, or making online payments. Despite mail disruptions, tax payments remain due by November 15, 2024, with penalties for late payments. Citizens can view bills online, and credit/debit card payments are accepted with fees. The tax office emphasizes the need to meet payment deadlines to avoid penalties.

STORY 5: Student Charged with Bringing Gun to School

A 13-year-old student at Cousins Middle School was arrested on September 17 for allegedly bringing a gun to school the previous day. The Newton County Sheriff's Office was alerted after the student showed the gun to others on the school bus. He has been charged with carrying a weapon in a school safety zone, a felony, and was handed over to the Juvenile Court System. The Sheriff's Office emphasized the importance of student and staff safety, urging parents to discuss the serious consequences of bringing weapons to school, making threats, or committing acts of violence, to prevent such incidents and avoid further arrests.

Story 1: Civil Rights Groups Challenge Georgia Election Rule Changes

Civil and voting rights groups, including the ACLU of Georgia and the Southern Poverty Law Center, have filed a brief challenging recent change made by the State Election Board's Republican majority. These changes allow local officials to conduct inquiries and review documentation before certifying election results, which the groups argue could disrupt Georgia's election certification process and disenfranchise voters. The lawsuit, supported by the Democratic National Committee and the Democratic Party of Georgia, claims the new rules could create uncertainty and delay results, potentially impacting the upcoming elections. Georgia Republican Chairman Josh McKoon defends the changes as measures to enhance election integrity.

Story 2: GHC Student Named a 2024 Coca-Cola Leaders of Promise Scholar

Kara King, a student at Georgia Highlands College pursuing both an Associate and a bachelor’s in healthcare management, has been named a 2024 Coca-Cola Leaders of Promise Scholar. This scholarship, part of a $210,000 program funded by the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation and Phi Theta Kappa, supports new Phi Theta Kappa members based on academic achievement, community service, and leadership potential. King, who found GHC to be the best fit for her studies and online learning needs, is thrilled about the award. She encourages involvement in campus organizations and emphasizes the value of returning to education.

Story 3: Here’s Who’s Running for Office in Holly Springs

On November 5, Holly Springs voters will choose a new mayor from two candidates: Mark Aurand, a veteran in building construction, and Ryan Shirley, a small business owner and youth sports coach. Current Mayor Steven Miller, who has served since 2017, is not running for re-election. Ward 3 Councilmember Michael Roy Zenchuk II and Ward 5 City Councilmember Jeff Wilbur are running unopposed for re-election. The voter registration deadline is October 7, and early voting begins October 15. For more details, visit [Cherokee County Elections](https://cherokeegavotes.com).

Story 4: Third Newton Student Charged with Making Threats

On September 10, a third Newton County School System student, an 11-year-old from Newton County STEAM Academy, was arrested for making terroristic threats. This follows two other student arrests for similar threats made on September 5 and 6. These incidents are reportedly inspired by the recent school shooting in Barrow County. Superintendent Dr. Duke Bradley III stressed that the school system is taking these threats seriously, emphasizing that any form of threatening behavior is prohibited and can result in severe legal consequences. Sheriff Ezell Brown urges the community to work together to prevent further threats and violence.

Story 5: Kids Resale Market Scheduled For Downtown

On September 21, Clover Craft Studio will host a Kids Resale Market from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 159 S. Main St. This consignment sale offers a cost-effective way for families to purchase gently used children’s clothing and other items, while kids enjoy the studio’s playroom. The event, organized by studio owner Shannon Donald, who has a background in event planning and organizing, is a popular community fixture and will feature a variety of seasonal items. Story 6: Trump Leading Harris in Georgia in Latest Poll

A recent Quinnipiac College poll shows former President Donald Trump leading Vice President Kamala Harris by 4 percentage points in Georgia, with Trump at 49% and Harris at 45%. Independent Cornel West and socialist Claudia De la Cruz each hold 1%. Trump leads among men and white voters, while Harris performs better with women and Black voters. Independents are evenly split. Georgia remains a key battleground state, having narrowly gone for Democrat Joe Biden in the 2020 election.

Story 7: Board of Commissioners Denies Permit Request For RV Park

On September 10, the Rockdale County Board of Commissioners voted 2-0 to deny a special use permit for a proposed RV park and campground at 3260 East Fairview Road. Applicant Eugene West aimed to create a facility for military veterans, but the Conyers-Rockdale Planning Commission and residents raised concerns about traffic, environmental impact, and safety. The permit request had been opposed at multiple stages, including a public hearing on August 22. Chairman Oz Nesbitt was absent from the meeting where the decision was finalized.

Story 1: East Cobb to Celebrate 26th Annual EAST COBBER Parade + Festival

The 26th Annual EAST COBBER Parade + Festival, presented by CertaPro Painters, kicks off at 10 a.m. on September 14. Originally founded in 1995 by Cynthia Rozzo and now continued by Laren Brown, the event has grown from 500 participants to over 3,000, drawing more than 10,000 attendees. Known as the "Candy Parade," it features music, floats, marching bands, and candy. The parade honors local schools and VIPs such as principals and Teachers of the Year. After the parade, a free festival will run from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Johnson Ferry Baptist Church, offering entertainment, arts and crafts, carnival games, and local business showcases. For more details, contact Brown at 770-640-7070 or [email protected].

Story 2: How to Cope with Being an Empty Nester

As children head off to college, many parents face the emotional challenge of adjusting to an empty nest. Dr. David Ludden from Georgia Gwinnett College acknowledges that this transition can be bittersweet, reflecting on how deeply involved parents are in their children's lives. However, Ludden suggests viewing this milestone as a positive shift. It's an opportunity for parents to refocus on themselves and their relationship, exploring personal interests and hobbies, and prioritizing health. He also notes that as children become adults, the parent-child relationship evolves into a more equal, adult-to-adult dynamic.

Story 4: Inside the Political Fight To Build a Rural Georgia Hospital

In Butts County, Georgia, a new law, pushed by Lt. Gov. Burt Jones and his father Bill Jones, aims to clear the way for a new 150-bed hospital. This change was made possible by a legislative shift in the state's "certificate of need" (CON) regulations, which previously required state approval for new hospital projects. Critics argue the new law benefits the Jones family financially, but Burt Jones insists it's about improving local healthcare access. The new regulations exempt rural counties like Butts from CON requirements, allowing the proposed hospital to move forward. The project is intended to provide better medical services compared to the existing, limited Wellstar Sylvan Grove Medical Center.

Story 5: AT&T Protestors Stand On Main Street As Strike Enters Third Week

The Communication Workers of America (CWA) strike against AT&T, now in its third week, involves 17,000 employees across nine southeastern states. Union members are picketing on Main Street in Madison, demanding better health care, benefits, and cost-of-living increases. The strike began in August due to AT&T's unwillingness to negotiate on major issues. CWA President Claude Cummings Jr. announced on Labor Day that the union was withdrawing from mediation, accusing AT&T of using the process as a delay tactic. The CWA, representing workers from various industries, seeks fair compensation for its members' long-term investments in the company.

Story 1: Contraband epidemic plaguing Georgia prison system

Georgia's prison system is grappling with increased contraband and criminal activity due to reduced staffing and deteriorating infrastructure, according to Commissioner of Corrections Tyrone Oliver. In 2023, 14,497 cellphones were seized in prisons, a significant rise from 7,224 in 2019, with many smuggled by large drones. These contraband phones are used to orchestrate illegal drug distribution and violent crimes, including murders outside prison. Staffing losses, exacerbated by COVID, and outdated prison infrastructure are key factors. Despite a reduction in inmate deaths and violent incidents trending down, the rising proportion of violent offenders increases the severity of incidents. The Senate study committee plans to make recommendations by December 1 to address these issues.

Story 2: Lilburn resident part of Surya Ensemble performing in September at Lawrenceville Arts Center

The Atlanta-based Surya Ensemble, featuring a unique blend of Eastern and Western musicians, will debut their performance "Elements" on September 12 at the Lawrenceville Arts Center. The ensemble, which includes Indian oboe player Ankit Patel, guitarist Sean Thrower, violinist Catherine Evergreen, percussionist Nima Ghadiri, and dancer Maria Martynova, combines music, dance, and visuals to explore the four elements—earth, wind, water, and fire. Patel, who aims to showcase world music in an intimate setting, describes the performance as a unique cultural experience ideal for those interested in orchestral and artistic presentations. Tickets are $55, with more details available at the Lawrenceville Arts Center website.

The lineup includes Greg Shaddix on September 5, Rich Gunderlock on September 12, Tyler Porch on September 19, and Foster Greene on September 26. For more details, visit visitwoodstockga.com.

Story 4: Georgia Lands Federal Funds to Get the Lead Out of School Water

Georgia will receive $1.15 million in federal funds from the EPA to reduce lead in drinking water at schools and child-care centers. This funding is part of a $26 million national initiative to combat lead contamination. The EPA is also investing $15 billion to remove lead pipes and support local replacement projects. Critics argue that testing alone is insufficient due to lead's variable concentration, emphasizing the need for direct actions like installing filters and updating water stations.

Story 5: Former Atlanta CFO slapped with three-year prison sentence

Former Atlanta CFO Jim Beard has been sentenced to three years in federal prison for embezzling city funds for personal use. Beard, 60, used city money for luxury travel, personal items, and false tax deductions from 2011 to 2018. He stole tens of thousands of dollars, and in addition to prison, will serve three years of supervised release, pay a $10,000 fine, and restitution of over $177,000. The case was investigated by the FBI, IRS, and ATF. Beard pleaded guilty in March.

Story 6: Raffensperger calls State Election Board 'a mess'

Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger criticized the State Election Board for focusing on the 2020 election while neglecting around 200 pending voting fraud cases. Raffensperger, speaking at the Gwinnett Chamber, accused the board of disrupting election preparations with recent rule changes, which critics say could delay result certifications. He claimed these changes, supported by three Republican board members, undermine voter confidence and burden election workers. Raffensperger also highlighted the backlog of cases that the board has failed to review, leading to local district attorneys handling them instead. He emphasized the need for timely action to ensure election integrity.

Story 7: Conyers Native Clint Mathis on National Soccer Hall of Fame Semifinal Ballot

Conyers native Clint Mathis has been named a semifinalist for the National Soccer Hall of Fame's 2024 Veterans Ballot. The ballot recognizes players retired for over 10 years. Mathis, a standout for the U.S. National Team with 46 appearances and a key goal against South Korea in 2002, also had a notable MLS career with 67 goals in 283 games. He played professionally from 1998 to 2010 and also had stints in Germany and Greece. The next step is for the Screening Committee to select 10 finalists, with the Veteran Voting Committee determining the inductees.
