BREAK: MONSTER JAM 2025_FINAL – MORGAN MEDICAL JAN_FINAL

STORY 1:   One killed in Tuesday accident

In Covington, a fatal accident occurred Tuesday morning when a wide-load tractor trailer carrying an excavator turned onto Access Road, colliding with an oncoming GMC van. The van struck the excavator's tracks, and its driver was pronounced dead at the scene. The crash happened west of Old Oxford Road. The Georgia State Patrol is investigating the incident, with details still preliminary.

STORY 2:     Smuggling Ring Busted At Morgan County Jail

Morgan County Jail staff uncovered a contraband smuggling ring after suspicious crinkling in a pair of long johns led to the discovery of Percocet pills, tobacco, and rolling papers hidden in the waistband. Inmate Antonio Delango Brown, 26, was identified as the ringleader, with Jaquatta Jernigan, 21, delivering the items, and Norbeta Coleman, 24, coordinating the operation. Investigators believe Coleman, a possible love interest of Brown, was pressured into involvement. The smuggling attempt could have introduced fentanyl-laced pills into the jail. Following the incident, the jail banned outside clothing deliveries to prevent future contraband smuggling.

STORY 3:  Newton mulls change to closure pay policy

Newton County is revising its personnel policy regarding compensation for employees required to work during office closures. County Attorney Patrick Jaugstetter highlighted confusion and inconsistent application in the current policy, recommending starting fresh by eliminating Section 1118. However, the Board of Commissioners unanimously voted to table the decision for 60 days to clarify the policy. Currently, essential employees receive full pay plus closure pay during emergencies, but commissioners agreed additional compensation is needed. Separately, the board approved allowing the Human Resources director to report directly to them on matters involving the county manager, ensuring oversight remains intact.

Habitat for Humanity of Morgan County and the Humane Society of Morgan County collaborated to repair a donated house on Eugene Road, culminating in a $10,700 donation from the Humane Society to Habitat on March 21. Habitat volunteers contributed over 300 hours, completing extensive repairs, including rebuilding decks, installing doors, and painting. The house, donated through estates, will be sold to support the Humane Society’s mission of rescuing animals and promoting spay/neuter programs. This partnership highlights the impact of legacy giving and the dedication of both nonprofits, with Habitat preparing to break ground on its next home this month.

STORY 5:   Two teens charged in Senior Skip Day murder

Two high school students, Jarvis Hinton Jr., 16, and Tashshawn Lyons, 17, have been charged with murder in the shooting of Justin Etienne, 18, during Senior Skip Day at Denny Dobbs Park on March 19. Hinton, a Newton High student, was arrested at school and charged as an adult, while Lyons, a Rockdale County High student, was arrested after being hospitalized for injuries sustained fleeing the scene. Etienne, a bystander, was falsely accused of involvement in the altercation. The Newton County Sheriff’s Office commended investigators and warned against spreading false information during the ongoing investigation.

Newton County School System announced three finalists for its inaugural HERO Award, honoring exceptional classified employees. The 2025 finalists are Cheryl Clark (Fairview Elementary), Kymberli Durden (Alcovy High), and Chandra Mitchell (Special Education Department). STORY 2:     Teen killed in shooting at Denny Dobbs Park

The Newton County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a fatal shooting of an 18-year-old male at Denny Dobbs Park on Wednesday. The victim, found with a gunshot wound, later died at a hospital. Authorities consider the incident isolated, with no ongoing threat to the community. The victim's identity has not been released, and it’s unclear if local students were involved. As a precaution, additional law enforcement will patrol some schools. Denny Dobbs Park, a popular recreation area, is also the site of a new senior enrichment center under construction. The investigation remains active.

Buckhead Town Council addressed ongoing water meter issues causing inaccurate, inflated bills by deciding to charge a flat $31 fee per meter this month. The new meters, installed in 2022 for $75,000, have rarely worked properly, and the town is working to resolve the issue locally. The council also approved a temporary "chip and seal" repair for Baldwin Dairy Road due to insufficient TSPLOST funds for full resurfacing. Other discussions included upgrades to a septic system, preparations for Old Buckhead Days on April 5, tree maintenance costs, and park improvements like new swings and a picnic table grant application.

STORY 5:   Ozburn honored with Mercer Law School’s 2025 Outstanding Alumnus Award

Retired Superior Court Judge Samuel D. Ozburn received Mercer University Law School's 2025 Outstanding Alumnus Award on March 8. STORY 1:   Volunteers sought for Great American Cleanup

Keep Newton Beautiful (KNB) seeks volunteers for the Great American Cleanup on Saturday, March 29, starting at 9 a.m. at Longhorn Steakhouse in Covington. Volunteers will receive biscuits, water, t-shirts (first 500 registrants), gloves, and garbage bags. The event aims to raise awareness about litter prevention and improve the community. Participants can clean up roadsides, parks, or other areas, with suggested locations provided by KNB. Groups with children are advised to avoid busy roads. KNB also offers litter prevention programs, including the popular Detective Seymore Green puppet show, to promote community responsibility.

STORY 2:     Madison Passes New Leash Law For Dogs In Public

Madison's City Council unanimously passed a stricter dog leash law on March 10, requiring all dogs to be leashed in public areas, except dog parks and private property. The new law closes a loophole that allowed unleashed dogs if they obeyed verbal commands. Prompted by public support and citizen feedback, the ordinance mandates leashing on sidewalks, roads, trails, parks, and more. Council members, including Eric Joyce and Betsy Wagenhauser, praised the community's input in shaping the legislation, which aims to enhance safety and accountability.

STORY 3:  Robinson named new fire chief in Rockdale

Rockdale County has appointed James “Jimmy” Robinson as the new chief of its Fire Rescue Service. Previously deputy chief and interim chief, Robinson succeeds Marian McDaniel, who resigned last month. With 21 years of fire and EMS experience, Robinson has served in multiple counties and was named Georgia Chief Fire Officer of the Year in 2022. At the Board of Commissioners meeting, Robinson pledged to enhance public safety, strengthen community relations, and lead with transparency. A member of Rockdale Fire Rescue since 2008, he holds numerous certifications and bachelor’s degrees in Fire Services and Fire Protection Engineering.

A black airsoft pistol with a painted-over safety tip was also found under the driver’s seat. Marshall faces charges including felony marijuana possession, intent to distribute, speeding, and a seat belt violation.

Travis Abbott, 53, of Walton County, has been arrested for the murder of his ex-girlfriend, Collette Sease, 54, whose body was found in a private lake in Newton County on March 3. Initially investigated as a possible drowning, authorities later determined it was a homicide. Abbott is accused of killing Sease and concealing her body in the lake off Ga. Highway 212. The Newton County Sheriff’s Office, with assistance from the GBI and Walton County Sheriff’s Office, made the arrest on March 10. The lake is located in a wooded area near Ga. He was fired in 2023 after an investigation into SCUBA gear purchases from a business he co-owned, which the county said bypassed the bid process. Mikos argues the county knew of his business ties and had used the vendor for years. He seeks damages under the Age Discrimination in Employment Act.

STORY 1:   Newton County Extends Administrative Leave for County Manager

Newton County Manager Harold Cooper’s paid administrative leave has been extended to March 4 as the Board of Commissioners seeks more information following his Feb. 8 DUI arrest. Initially suspended for 10 days with pay, the board voted 4-1 to extend the leave after a closed session discussion. Commissioner J.C. Henderson opposed the extension, advocating for dismissal, while Commissioner Stephanie Lindsey cited policy ambiguity and the need for further details. Cooper, hired in May 2023, faces charges of DUI and improper lane usage after being pulled over for crossing the centerline. The board will revisit the matter at its next meeting.

STORY 2:     Madison-Morgan Cultural Center Presents Madison Antiques & Fine Things

The Madison-Morgan Cultural Center will host the Madison Antiques & Fine Things event from March 20-22 at The Hall on Foster Street. This reimagined three-day event features antique dealers, artists, and interior designers from across the Southeast. It kicks off with a preview party on March 20, offering cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, live music, and early shopping. Friday and Saturday include lectures by renowned speakers like architect Andrew Cogar, designer Charlotte Moss, and landscape architect Hadden Powell. The event is a fundraiser for the Center and promises a blend of history, art, and Southern charm. Tickets are available online.

STORY 3:  Man charged with aggravated assault in connection with body found in Habersham County

The Rockdale County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a missing person case that led to the discovery of a body in Habersham County on Feb. 20. The investigation began with a welfare check in Rockdale County, and foul play was suspected the next day. Lee Daffin, 57, was identified as a person of interest and apprehended after a vehicle chase in Stephens County. Human remains were found in Cornelia, but the identity has not been released. Daffin faces charges of aggravated assault and terroristic threats, with additional charges pending as the investigation continues.

Morgan County High School's girls basketball team dominated Carver-Columbus 58-33 in the Georgia AA State Championship Elite 8, showcasing stifling defense and strong rebounding. Led by junior Cydney Burke's 24 points, the Lady Dogs built an early 19-4 lead and never looked back. Madison Holcomb added 14 points, while Jaden Young scored 10. Now 21-9, Morgan County advances to the Final Four to face 29-1 Murray County on tonight at Georgia Southwestern University. Ranked 11th in AA, the Lady Dogs are riding high, with their coach praising the team's momentum and determination to keep their winning streak alive.

STORY 5:    Newton Commissioners Press for New Programming at Nelson Heights

The Nelson Heights Community Center in Newton County is undergoing a $1 million renovation, funded by a 2022 SPLOST referendum, with plans to reopen this summer. Renovations include a splash pad, new playground equipment, a fully renovated kitchen, updated lighting, flooring, security cameras, and more. The center, closed in 2023 due to management issues, will also receive a new operating plan within 60 days. Commissioners are focused on defining the center’s purpose, such as after-school programs or senior services, and ensuring long-term staffing. Renovation costs have raised concerns, but officials aim to maximize savings during the process.

The single-engine Rockwell Commander crashed in woods north of the runway shortly after takeoff, with no further communication from the aircraft, according to the FAA. Covington Police responded to the scene around 11:20 p.m. The FAA and National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the incident.

STORY 2:     Early Voting For Special Election Begins Feb. 24

Morgan County voters will begin early voting on Feb. 24 for three local races in the March 18 Special Election. District 1 voters will choose a new county commissioner among Ed Latham (R), Carl Jones (D), and Cedrick Robertson (I). District 5 voters will select between Nathan Park (R), Dr. Claudia Crenshaw (D), and Zeke Lambert (I). Madison District 3 residents will vote for a city council representative, with Jim Malanowski (R) facing Tim Robinson (D). Early voting runs weekdays and two Saturdays, March 1 and 8, at the Elections Office in Madison. Election Day voting requires visiting assigned polling places, with polls open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

STORY 3:  Arbor Day Celebration Kicks off City-wide Treasure Hunt Ahead of Spring Festivities

Conyers will celebrate Arbor Day on Wednesday, Feb. 26, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Big Haynes Creek Nature Center's Pollinator Education Garden. The Georgia Forestry Commission will distribute native tree saplings. The celebration also kicks off the "Treasures in the Trees" scavenger hunt, featuring guided plant walks and decorative blossoms leading up to the Cherry Blossom Festival on March 22-23. STORY 5:    DECAL seeking nonprofit sponsors for summer meals for kids

In Georgia, nearly 64% of public school students rely on free or reduced-price lunches during the school year. To address food insecurity in summer, Happy Helpings, Georgia’s Summer Food Service Program, provides free meals and snacks to children under 18 and individuals with disabilities. Administered by DECAL and funded by the USDA, the program seeks nonprofit sponsors to expand meal access, especially in rural and underserved areas. Sponsors receive federal reimbursements for qualifying meals and must meet specific eligibility criteria. Last summer, 73 sponsors served over 3.2 million meals at 1,026 sites statewide. STORY 1:   If You Haven’t Caught the Flu This Season, Consider Yourself Lucky

Flu cases in the U.S. are peaking for a second time this winter, with the highest spike in 15 years, according to the CDC. Last week’s flu-related doctor visits surpassed any winter flu season since 2009-2010. So far, the flu has caused 24 million illnesses, 310,000 hospitalizations, and 13,000 deaths, including 57 children. Georgia reported very high flu activity. Prevention tips include handwashing, avoiding sick individuals, and staying home if symptoms develop. Two flu strains, Type A H1N1 and H3N2, dominate this season, while officials monitor the bird flu strain H5N1, which primarily affects animals.

STORY 2:     MCHS Announces Star Student And Teacher

Monday, February 10, was a big day for Morgan County High School senior Rishi Patel, who was named STAR Student and a finalist in the 2025 National Merit Scholarship Program. Patel selected his math teacher, Pam Hooten, as his STAR Teacher, praising her for inspiring his love of math and supporting his academic journey. Hooten, who has taught Patel advanced math courses and proctored his dual enrollment classes, was honored by the recognition. Patel, known for his curiosity and drive, now advances in the National Merit Scholarship process, with winners to be announced in March.

STORY 3:  Medicaid expansion in Georgia drawing interest from long-opposed Republicans

Medicaid expansion in Georgia is gaining rare bipartisan attention with Senate Bill 50, which proposes PeachCare Plus to expand Medicaid for those earning up to 138% of the federal poverty level. Currently, Georgia limits Medicaid to those below the poverty line, leaving over 200,000 without affordable healthcare. While the federal government would cover 90% of costs, Gov. Brian Kemp remains cautious about long-term funding and prefers the limited Pathways program with work requirements. Though SB 50 faces slim chances of passing, rural Republican senators are pushing for discussions, citing the financial struggles of rural hospitals and personal experiences with healthcare access.

STORY 4:  Madison Considers Closing Leash Law Loophole

Madison’s leash law is under scrutiny after a citizen complaint revealed a loophole allowing dogs off-leash if they respond to verbal commands. Councilman Eric Joyce highlighted safety concerns, noting surrounding cities require six-foot leashes. While some council members hesitated to change the ordinance over one complaint, others, including Carrie Peters Reid and Mayor Fred Perriman, supported tightening the law for public safety. The council plans to revisit the issue in February, aiming to balance safety with dog owners’ preferences.

STORY 5:    Newton County Manager Harold Cooper faces DUI charge

Newton County Manager Harold Cooper, 53, was arrested on Feb. 8 for DUI and improper lane usage after being stopped by deputies near Covington Bypass. Cooper, hired in May 2023 under a two-year contract, was released on bond and is set to appear in court on March 25. The Board of Commissioners scheduled a closed-session meeting on Feb. 12 to discuss personnel matters, though it’s unclear if it pertained to Cooper.

STORY 1:   Body of released inmate found in ditch near Newton County jail

The body of Anthony James Crast, 67, was found in a ditch near the Newton County Detention Center on Jan. 27, 11 days after his release. Crast, previously arrested for aggravated assault and terroristic threats, was discovered by a Georgia Power crew. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation initially handled the case but turned it over to the NCSO, with the cause of death still unknown. This follows a similar 2023 incident where another released inmate, William Roberts, 44, was found dead near the jail. Both cases remain under investigation.

STORY 2:     Bostwick Council votes to end Cotton Gin Festival

After over 30 years, Bostwick’s beloved Cotton Gin Festival, known for its tractor parade and celebration of agrarian life, has come to an end. The city council unanimously voted to discontinue the event, citing challenges in managing its growing scale. Started in 1990 by June Whittaker to fund the renovation of the historic Susie Agnes Hotel, the festival raised enough to restore the building and support other community projects. Mayor John Bostwick and Chair Angie Howard expressed gratitude for its success but acknowledged it had outgrown the small town. The decision, though bittersweet, marks the end of a cherished tradition.

STORY 3:  Conyers will allow homestead exemption to take effect

Conyers will allow the floating property tax exemption under House Bill 581 to take effect, following its approval by the General Assembly and Georgia voters in 2024. The exemption limits annual increases in taxable home values to the inflation rate, based on 2025 assessments. Mayor Vince Evans emphasized the city’s commitment to fiscal responsibility, stating this decision benefits the community. Governments have until March 1 to opt out, but Conyers will not pursue this. The exemption is irrevocable once enacted, and cities may implement a Floating Local Option Sales Tax (FLOST) to offset revenue losses, requiring unanimous local government agreement.

Former Morgan County Sheriff Robert Markley has been appointed by Gov. Brian Kemp to the State Board of Pardons and Paroles, becoming only the second Georgia sheriff in the board’s history. Markley, replacing Terry Barnard, will serve a seven-year term pending Senate confirmation. With 35 years in law enforcement, Markley brings extensive experience and a balanced approach to reviewing parole cases. The board, which can grant paroles, pardons, and commute death sentences, includes Chairman David Herring and former Sheriff Wayne Bennett. Markley expressed pride in the appointment, emphasizing his dedication to public safety and fair decision-making.

STORY 5:    Sheriff’s Office Demands $500K Annual Raise, Commissioner Boycotts Vote

Morgan County Sheriff Tyler Hooks clashed with the Board of Commissioners over his urgent request for nearly $500,000 in annual pay raises for Sheriff’s Office employees, citing severe understaffing and low wages compared to neighboring agencies. The tense meeting ended abruptly when Commissioner Ben Riden left, halting the vote due to a lack of quorum. Riden supported pay raises but argued for waiting until the board is fully staffed after a March special election. Hooks warned of mass resignations if action isn’t taken immediately, while other commissioners expressed support for the raises. The issue will be revisited in upcoming meetings.

STORY 1:   Man suspected of stabbing officer in custody

Justin Perry Hurst, 37, turned himself in at the Rockdale County Jail after being wanted for stabbing an off-duty Atlanta police officer during a Jan. 18 road-rage incident. Authorities say Hurst hit the officer’s vehicle on I-20 near Panola Road, leading the officer to follow him into Rockdale County to get his tag number. A verbal altercation escalated, with Hurst allegedly striking and stabbing the officer multiple times before fleeing. The officer was hospitalized, and a $5,000 reward had been offered for Hurst’s arrest.

STORY 2:     Man Wanted For Triple Homicide Attempt Arrested

Alfonzo Brown, 66, wanted for a triple homicide attempt in Maryland, was arrested during a traffic stop in Morgan County on Jan. 25. Deputy Sam Hutto stopped Brown’s van on I-20 for lane violations and suspicious behavior, discovering he was wanted for allegedly shooting two men and a woman in Clinton, Maryland, on Jan. 11. The victims were treated and in stable condition. During the stop, deputies found cleaning supplies, latex gloves, and a suspicious red-brown substance in the van. Brown was arrested without incident, waived extradition, and awaits transport to Maryland.

STORY 3:  UPDATE: Town Center Mall Closed Due to Unpaid Power Bill, Fire Watch

Town Center mall has temporarily closed due to unpaid power bills, according to Georgia Power, which had worked with the mall for months before disconnecting service. The closure affects fire safety systems, prompting a fire watch and restricted access to the mall, though anchor stores like Macy’s and JCPenney remain open. Owned by Kohan Retail Investment Group, the mall has faced financial struggles, mirroring issues at other Kohan properties nationwide. Cobb officials expressed concern for tenants and suggested relocation options, while also viewing the situation as an opportunity for redevelopment of the 92-acre site.

The Mardi Gras Masquerade Ball returns to The Hall on Foster Street on Saturday, Feb. 8, following last year’s successful debut. Co-chaired by Christian Williams and Katherine Webster, the event will feature French Quarter-inspired decor, live music by U.S. Beat, a heated casino tent, Creole-inspired tapas, and a silent auction with prizes like a Fripp Island getaway. Tickets are $150, with VIP tables available for $1,500. Reigning King Zeb Grant and Queen Rachel Kinsaul will pass their crowns to new winners, chosen through a voting fundraiser. The evening promises elegance, entertainment, and support for the arts.

STORY 5:    Dauset Trails’ groundhog Beau will give weather report Feb. 2

General Beauregard “Beau” Lee, Georgia’s official groundhog, will deliver his annual weather prediction on Sunday, Feb. 2, at Dauset Trails Nature Center in Jackson. Gates open at 6 a.m., with Beau’s forecast at 7:30 a.m. Groundhog Day tradition states that if Beau sees his shadow, winter continues for six weeks; if not, spring arrives early. Beau, who moved to Dauset Trails in 2017, carries on a weather-predicting legacy dating back to 1981. The event will feature souvenir shirts, food, and drinks, celebrating this quirky tradition rooted in German and French folklore.

    BREAK: DRAKE (Drake Realty (Geoff)

STORY 1:   Newton school board holds first public hearing on 'opting out' of homestead exemption

The Newton County Board of Education held the first of three public hearings to discuss opting out of the floating homestead exemption under House Bill 581. Board members expressed concerns that the exemption would significantly reduce school revenue, potentially leading to staff cuts, larger class sizes, and increased millage rates. CFO Erica Robinson estimated a $30 million revenue loss over three years if the exemption takes effect in 2026. The board has previously reduced tax burdens and plans more hearings on January 29 and February 4. Board members emphasized the challenge of compensating for lost revenue without affecting the school system negatively.

STORY 2:     Two Morgan Middle School Students Killed in ATV Accident

Morgan County is grieving the loss of two 12-year-old boys, Bennett Rabern and Avett Jackson, who died in an ATV accident on January 20. A third boy, also 12, was hospitalized but is expected to survive. The accident occurred on the Rabern property in Buckhead when the boys, returning from a hunt, were blinded by the setting sun and accidentally struck a parked trailer. The Georgia State Patrol confirmed it was a tragic accident, not reckless driving. The community, including Morgan County Middle School, is offering support and grief counseling. Local officials expressed deep condolences and are providing assistance to the affected families.

STORY 3:  Newton commissioners weigh costs, benefits of HB 581

Newton County officials are evaluating the floating homestead exemption from House Bill 581, approved by voters in November. They must decide by March 1 whether to implement it. The exemption, effective in 2026, would freeze assessed property values at 2025 levels, capping increases at 3%. Concerns include potential funding shortfalls and increased millage rates. Attorney Aaron Meyer highlighted the exemption's benefits for long-term residents but noted it could shift the tax burden to commercial properties. A Floating Local Option Sales Tax (FLOST) could offset revenue losses, but requires agreement from all local jurisdictions. The decision deadline is March 1.

STORY 4:  Rivian's $6.6 Billion Loan Finalized In The Nick Of Time

Rivian finalized a $6.6 billion federal loan just before President Trump's inauguration, sparking controversy as incoming officials threaten to challenge it. The loan supports Rivian's new 16-million-square-foot EV manufacturing plant in Stanton Springs North, Georgia, expected to create 7,500 jobs and produce new SUV and crossover models by 2028. The Department of Government Efficiency, co-chaired by Vivek Ramaswamy and Tesla CEO Elon Musk, criticized the loan, suggesting it needs scrutiny. Reversing the loan would require congressional action, but Rivian continues its plans for the factory.

STORY 5:    Lawsuit filed in death of man found in locked Sealy trailer

Jasmin Jennings has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Sealy Mattress Corp. after her fiancé, Joshua Armour, was found dead in a locked trailer on their property. Armour, who had mental health issues, went missing on October 22 and was later located at the Sealy facility by his family using a phone location feature. Despite their efforts, they were not allowed to search the property. Armour's body was discovered on October 29. The lawsuit alleges negligence by Sealy, as employees were instructed to lock all trailers. The case is under investigation, with unconfirmed reports of burn injuries.

    BREAK: DRAKE (Drake Realty (Geoff)

STORY 1:   Build-to-rent development wins appeal in Newton County

The Covington Creek Springs development, a build-to-rent single-family home project, will proceed after the Newton County Board of Commissioners granted an appeal for a preliminary plat extension. Despite local opposition due to concerns about traffic, density, and property values, the board approved the extension, citing legal obligations and the project's compliance with zoning ordinances. The development, 80% complete, faced delays due to rock on the site. The county's zoning ordinance doesn't prohibit build-to-rent homes, and a moratorium on new projects doesn't apply to this development. The decision passed with a 3-2 vote.

STORY 2:      Board clashes over JDA Board representation

During the first 2025 meeting of the Morgan County Board of Commissioners, a dispute arose over the reappointment of Bob Hughes to the Joint Development Authority (JDA). Commissioners Blake McCormack and Philipp von Hanstein sought to reopen applications for the position, arguing Hughes' dual role as JDA representative and economic development director was a conflict. Commissioner Ben Riden defended Hughes, criticizing the push for change without a full board present, as the District 1 seat is vacant and Chairman Bill Kurtz was absent. Despite Riden's objections, McCormack and von Hanstein extended the application window, potentially voting on a new appointee in March.

STORY 3:  Man charged with firing shots at Rockdale deputy

In Conyers, Lorenzo Banks was arrested after allegedly firing at a Rockdale County deputy from a house on Locomotive Road. The incident occurred around 11 p.m. when the deputy responded to a shots-fired report. Banks reportedly shot at the deputy, who returned fire. Banks then barricaded himself inside, leading to a SWAT team intervention that resulted in his arrest. Additional charges may follow as the investigation continues. Separately, in Newton County, Tahjay Rashid Daley was arrested for an armed robbery involving three chainsaws and $500. Two other suspects, Anthony Bergen and Francisco Venegas, are still sought by authorities.

Morgan County has expanded its Flock Camera system to 25 units, with 23 already operational. These cameras, approved by the Board of Commissioners in 2024, cost $29,200 initially and $75,000 annually for all units. Each camera captures vehicle details and aids law enforcement in investigations, missing persons cases, and crime prevention. Sheriff Tyler Hooks highlights their multi-use capabilities, including real-time alerts for stolen vehicles and suspects. The system includes 23 fixed and 2 mobile cameras, enhancing collaboration with law enforcement and community partners to improve safety and reduce crime.

STORY 5:    Newton County Community Prayer Breakfast postponed

The annual Community Prayer Breakfast in Covington, originally scheduled for today at Turner Lake Center, has been postponed due to the winter storm. The event will be rescheduled for spring, after the General Assembly adjourns. Organized by the Kiwanis Club of Covington and the Covington Rotary Club, the breakfast aims to unite community and government leaders in prayer. This year's speaker, Kelvin J. Cochran, a senior fellow at Alliance Defending Freedom, was set to discuss religious liberty and community engagement. Organizers encourage continued prayer for the event's success.

Cherokee County has received $2.7 million in state funding to resurface over 12 miles of local roads, with a total project cost of $3.9 million due to a 44% local match funded by a Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax. The county submitted a list of 41 roads for the 2025 Local Maintenance and Improvement Grant program. The resurfacing work, covering areas like Smithwyck and Towne Lake Hills subdivisions, will be bid in early 2025 and completed by summer. The county aims for a 20-25 year repaving cycle, planning to resurface an additional 15-17 miles in fiscal year 2025.

Story 2:  Georgia Elector Wendell McNeal Cast Ballot For Trump

Morgan County resident Wendell McNeal was among 16 Georgia electors who cast their ballots for President Donald Trump and JD Vance on December 17 at the state capitol. Appointed by the Georgia Republican Party's executive board, the electors conducted the voting in an orderly manner, chaired by Josh McKoon. McNeal emphasized the significance of the process, which involved signing six certificates of the vote. These documents, along with the Certificate of Ascertainment, are sent to various officials, including the U.S. Senate and the archivist, to confirm the election results. The paperwork had to reach its destinations by December 25 for the official count on January 6.

Story 3:   Newton County westside youth facility grant not imminent

A $4 million federal grant for a youth facility in Newton County remains inaccessible due to unresolved issues. Outgoing Commissioner Alana Sanders sought an update, learning that a site and budget are needed for the grant, approved by HUD, to be awarded. The grant application, submitted without county authorization, was incomplete. The county lacks funding partly due to federal budget resolutions. A location dispute persists, with a withdrawn offer for land on Brown Bridge Road and other sites considered. The county has also allocated $4 million in SPLOST funds for the facility, but site selection remains a hurdle.

Story 4:  Georgia Digital Driver’s License and ID for Holiday Air Travel

If you're traveling through airports this holiday season, consider adding your Georgia Digital Driver's License and ID to your smartphone wallet. This digital ID can expedite your journey through select TSA PreCheck checkpoints, including Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport. Available on Apple, Google, and Samsung platforms, the digital ID is free and voluntary, though you must still carry your physical license. Spencer R. Moore, Commissioner of the Georgia Department of Driver Services, encourages Georgians to embrace this digital convenience to enhance travel and service experiences.

Story 5:  Feds sue city of Brunswick over homeless shelter

The Justice Department is suing the city of Brunswick for attempting to close The Well, a faith-based homeless shelter affiliated with the United Methodist Church. The lawsuit alleges that Brunswick violated the Religious Land Use and Institutionalized Persons Act by trying to shut down the shelter, which adopted safety measures suggested by local police. The city blames The Well for unrelated criminal activity and filed a state court suit to close it. The federal suit seeks to prevent the city from interfering with the shelter, arguing that the city's actions impose a substantial burden on religious exercise without a compelling interest.

Story 6:   BioLab fire: How likely is closure – and more unanswered questions

Residents near the BioLab chemical plant in Rockdale County are concerned about potential health effects and environmental contamination following a fire that led to evacuations and disruptions. They are filing lawsuits and demanding accountability from BioLab, which is responsible for cleanup plans. The Georgia Environmental Protection Division oversees the process, but there's no set timeline. The fire involved chemicals that released toxic gases, prompting health concerns. Lawsuits seek plant closure and damages, while community efforts focus on long-term health tracking. BioLab has set up a reimbursement process for affected residents, but frustrations remain over delays.

Story 7:  Steffen Thomas Sculpture Donated To His Museum

The Steffen Thomas Museum of Art has welcomed back "Harmony," a sculpture by Steffen Thomas, thanks to a donation from William and Julie Brogdon. Created in the late 1950s from pine wood, "Harmony" depicts joined male and female half-faces and is now part of the museum's permanent collection. The Brogdons, long-time supporters, also contributed funds for the sculpture's exhibition and conservation. The museum, dedicated to preserving Thomas's legacy, was founded by his family in Morgan County, Georgia, after plans for a studio museum in Atlanta were unfeasible. It showcases Thomas's prolific artistic career.

The Humane Society of Morgan County (HSMC) is hosting its annual Paws & Purrs Gala on January 25, 2025, at Variety Works in Madison. This fundraising event, themed "Denim to Diamonds," features an Italian dinner, music, and auctions, with sponsorship from Ritz-Carlton Reynolds, Lake Oconee, and Harvest and Honey.      The Newton County Board of Education approved the school calendars for 2025-2026 and 2026-2027, following a community survey. This role is part of a new police zone aimed at enhancing safety, supporting local events, and fostering relationships with businesses and visitors. Johnson will primarily patrol on foot or bicycle, with a patrol car available if needed. STORY 5:    Planning Commission Votes Against Off Road Dirt Course

    Commercial: DRAKE (Drake Realty (Geoff)

Story 1:   Georgia Power hiking rates

Georgia energy regulators approved a 3.5% rate increase for Georgia Power customers, raising average residential bills by $5.48 per month starting January 1. This is part of a series of increases over the past few years, totaling over $40, partly due to new nuclear reactors at Plant Vogtle and rising fuel costs. Commissioner Lauren McDonald supported the increase but expressed concern about its timing amid easing inflation. Georgia Power's lawyer, Brandon Marzo, stated the hike is necessary due to ongoing investments.

Story 2:  Rising Student Anxiety Strains Counselors: ‘We Need More Resources’

School counselors in Georgia are seeking more support as student anxiety and emotional struggles rise. Amanda Johnson, a counselor at Armuchee Primary School, highlights the urgent need for mental health resources and reducing stigma. The American School Counselor Association recommends one counselor per 250 students, but current ratios are much higher, with Johnson serving 500 students and Candace Hammond at Pepperell High School handling 430 students each. Previously funded by CARES Act, mental health initiatives are now underfunded. Despite partnerships with local health organizations, resources remain insufficient. Counselors also educate parents and teachers to better support students.

Story 3:   Archer Aviation Completes Construction of Manufacturing Facility in Covington

Archer Aviation Inc. has completed its 400,000-square-foot manufacturing facility, ARC, in Covington, Georgia, adjacent to Covington Municipal Airport. The facility will produce the Midnight eVTOL aircraft, with production starting in early 2025 and aiming for two aircraft per month by year-end. Archer plans to manufacture 650 aircraft annually by 2030, in partnership with Stellantis, which provides capital and expertise. The facility represents a $118 million investment and aims to transform urban travel with sustainable, low-noise aircraft. Governor Brian Kemp and Congressman Mike Collins praised the project for its innovation and job creation potential.

With over 17 years of service, including 10 years at Little Tikes Early Learning Center and five years at Lemon Tree Academy Day Care, she has become a beloved figure. Known for her warm greetings and delicious meals, Ms. Betty is cherished by children and parents alike. Her retirement is bittersweet for the community, as she has been the heart of the daycare, bringing joy and energy to her interactions with the kids.

Story 5:  Trump names Herschel Walker to ambassador post

President-elect Donald Trump has nominated Herschel Walker, a former University of Georgia football star and longtime friend, as U.S. ambassador to the Bahamas. Walker, who lost a 2022 Senate race to Democratic Sen. Raphael Warnock, has been a successful businessman and advocate for youth sports. His friendship with Trump dates back to the 1980s when Walker played for Trump's USFL team. Walker joins other Georgians nominated by Trump, including former Sen. David Perdue and former Sen. Kelly Loeffler. All nominations require Senate confirmation, with Republicans set to control the Senate next month.

Story 7:  Hundreds gather to honor retiring Clerk of Courts Linda Hays

Hundreds gathered at the Newton County Historic Courthouse to honor retiring Clerk of Courts Linda Hays, who has served for 42 years, making her the longest-serving elected official in Newton history. Elected in 1982, Hays was praised by several Superior Court judges for her dedication and efficiency. Chief Judge Ken Wynne Jr. highlighted her commitment to public service, while Senior Judge John Ott credited her with maintaining a smooth court system. The incident occurred around 9:30 a.m. on Monday, and foul play is not suspected. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation's Medical Examiner's Office will conduct an autopsy to determine the cause of death.

STORY 2:      Pecan Crop at the Heart of Morgan County Spared Helene’s Wrath

At C & C Orchard in Rutledge, Thomas and Shannon Clements successfully completed their pecan harvest, avoiding the devastation Hurricane Helene caused to much of Georgia's pecan crop. While the hurricane destroyed over 400,000 trees and caused significant financial losses, Morgan County was spared. The Clements, who run a 3,500-tree orchard, grow several pecan varieties and use advanced harvesting techniques. Their pecans are shipped for processing and sold nationwide. Despite challenges like weather and market competition, Georgia remains the top U.S. pecan producer. Shannon Clements also runs a business offering pecan services and sales.

The election call will be issued in January, with the election expected in March. Story 7:  Holiday Tour of Homes Ushers In The Christmas Season For Madison

Over the weekend, thousands of tourists explored Madison's Historic District during the Annual Holiday Tour of Homes, featuring historic homes adorned with festive decorations. Organized by the Madison-Morgan Cultural Center (MMCC), the event included daytime and evening candlelight tours, raising about $100,000 from nearly 3,500 ticket sales to support the center's operations. The tour showcased nine private historic homes, along with churches and museums. David Nunn, MMCC's managing director, praised the event's success and credited co-chairs Jennifer Lockridge, Angie Fetch, and Kathryn Cardwell for their efforts. Homeowners generously opened their homes to benefit the community and the cultural center.

STORY 1:  Record holiday travel numbers predicted by AAA

Georgians are expected to travel in record numbers during the year-end holiday period, with AAA predicting 3.7 million Georgians traveling 50 miles or more, surpassing last year's record. Nationwide, 119.3 million people are expected to travel, slightly exceeding the 2019 record. The increase is driven by consumer spending, steady economic growth, and strong employment. Most will travel by car, with 3.3 million Georgians expected on the roads. Air travel is also set to break records, with nearly 7.9 million Americans flying. AAA advises travelers to plan ahead, expect crowded conditions, and consider travel insurance.

STORY 2:      Two Pedestrians Hit On Eatonton Road, One Dead The Other Life-Flighted

A tragic incident on Eatonton Road in Madison resulted in the death of Jimmy Lee Love and critical injuries to Ralph Higgins, both in their 60s, as they attempted to cross the highway. Love was struck by a Mercedes SUV, and Higgins was hit by a Mercury Sedan while rushing to help Love. The Georgia State Patrol reported no fault on the drivers' part, citing poor lighting and lack of crosswalks as contributing factors. The road was closed for two hours following the incident. Madison officials have long identified this area as hazardous for pedestrians.

STORY 3:  Newton School System, Sheriff's Office support law enforcement career development

Newton County Schools has partnered with the Newton County Sheriff’s Office to enhance law enforcement career programs at Newton High School and Newton College & Career Academy. The Sheriff's Office donated duty equipment, such as belts and handcuff pouches, to support hands-on learning for students in Law & Public Safety and Criminal Justice classes. This collaboration aims to create a career pipeline, offering students practical training and industry exposure. The partnership also supports the launch of a SkillsUSA chapter, providing students with necessary equipment for competitions. Sheriff Ezell Brown expressed enthusiasm for inspiring future law enforcement careers.
