The Folly of Possessions and Riches: The Rich Fool
Parable: The Rich FoolPresented at Harbor Church, Los Angeles, California

Scripture: Luke 12:13-40
Today weâre studying the Parable of the Rich Fool. A fool is a person who misjudges means to ends and chooses the wrong end. The farmer in the Parable of the Rich Fool was a man who had chosen to let his soul rest in his wealth instead of in God.
In this parable and the story of what caused Jesus to tell it, we learn how to have a Kingdom mindset with our finances and other assets. Dallas helps us apply these concepts by inviting us to consider the question, âWhat is your life?â
John Wesley offered the following counsel on wealth management: âGet all you can. Save all you can. Give all you can.â Dallas recommends inserting âUse all you canâ into Wesleyâs instructions after âSave all you can.â Use what you have for the glory of God. Itâs better to have wealth in the hands of Christâs followers than anywhere else.
This is the tenth session of our 12-part series entitled âThe Parabolic Teaching About Christâs Kingdom by Christ Himself.â On the Sunday prior to teaching about the Parable of the Rich Fool, Dallas had taught a class based on The Parable of the Hours. Session 9. The Forgiving Heart and the Kingdom of God

This is the ninth session of a 12-part series Dallas called âThe Parabolic Teaching About Christâs Kingdom by Christ Himself,â and todayâs focus is on the gift of forgiveness. Many of us have a hard time with forgiveness, and sometimes thatâs because of misunderstandings about what it is and how we should approach it.
In this episode, Dallas clarifies what is and is not a part of what it means to forgive someone (i.e. it doesnât mean you forget about it and your relationship becomes the same as before) and offers helpful advice about things we can do to help us practice forgiveness. He also shares his interpretation of Matthew 18:35 (So likewise shall my heavenly Father do also unto you, if ye from your hearts forgive not every one his brother their trespasses.) and Matthew 6:12 (Forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.).

Parables #6. The Vineyard and the Wicked Husbandmen
Parable: The Parable of the VineyardPresented at Harbor Church, Los Angeles, California
April 10, 1983Scripture: Luke 20:1-47, Matthew 21:33-46
In Matthew 7:15-23, Jesus talks about false prophets and knowing a tree by its fruit.
The Parable of the Vineyard points out that Israel had developed leaders who led against God instead of for him, and shows what happens to those who lead (even with Godâs power), but are not with God in their hearts. Dallas looks at the context of this parable, as Israelâs religious leaders were clinging desperately to their authority in opposition and fear of the unique authority Jesus had. Such battles for spiritual authority continue today. It is important to try to understand just where the failure of these men were so we might understand ourselves better and guard our own hearts, and pray for those who lead us in an effective way.

In todayâs episode, we see how âThe Parable of the Wheat and the Taresâ and âThe Parable of the Netâ illustrate that there are many differences in the kinds of people who find a place in the kingdom of God. This includes understanding that some people who are living IN the kingdom or not OF the kingdom. Being IN something is a much more superficial thing than being OF it. But God has said âwhosoever will may come,â and it is His desire for us to grow together. So we need
to be careful to stay focused on Jesus and the best ways to help ourselves and be his disciples.

At the 2008 Calvin College Symposium of Worship, Dallas spoke on âWorship as the Fine Texture of Real Life.â He explained what worship is and how it can become a part of everything we do.
Dallas read these two definitions of worship:
1. "In worship we engage ourselves with, dwell upon, and express the supreme greatness, beauty and goodness of God â primarily through thought and devotion of our wills, but usually also with the aid of words, rituals and symbols, frequently in union with others."

How to Save Your Life

When you think about the phrase âbeing saved,â most people think about saving their soul. But what about the rest of you? Dallas explains that salvation is for every aspect of our lives and helps us understand how to redeem our time and bring everything we do back into the kingdom of God.
Definitions:
· âSpiritual formationâ is the process of shaping the individual so that they love God with all their heart, with all their soul, with all their mind, and with all their strength, and they love their neighbor as themselves.
· âSalvationâ is being caught up in the life that Jesus is now living on earth.
· âRedemptionâ is to buy something back.
· âBeautyâ is goodness made present to the senses.
· âTruthâ is a reflection of reality, including beauty and goodness.
· âGoodnessâ is all that nourishes and strengthens human life in a proper order.

Following Christ: Taking on the Mind of Christ

"The Following Christ conference was an annual event hosted by InterVarsity Christian Fellowship. Dallas had the honor of speaking at the closing session of the conference that took place in Atlanta, GA, December 28, 2002 - January 1, 2003. He painted a beautiful picture of what it means to follow Christ, urging believers to embrace the mind of Christ as outlined in Philippians 2.
Philippians 2:1-8
Therefore if there is any encouragement in Christ, if any consolation of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any affection and compassion, make my joy complete by being of the same mind, maintaining the same love, united in spirit, intent on one purpose. Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but with humility consider one another as more important than yourselves; do not merely look out for your own personal interests, but also for the interests of others. Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus, who, as He already existed in the form of God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but emptied Himself by taking the form of a bond-servant and being born in the likeness of men.
