This week, Fiona and returning guest host Emily, from RPGeeks, turn their attention to 'Van Richten's Guide to Ravenloft' and read about The Carnival, a wandering domain of wonders whose mirror image (The Witchlight Carnival) has a important role in 'The Wild Beyond The Witchlight'.

From the bio of 'Van Richten's Guide to Ravenloft':

'Unleash the horrors of Ravenloft in this campaign sourcebook for the world's greatest roleplaying game.

Terror stalks the nightmare realms of Ravenloft. No one knows this better than monster scholar Rudolph Van Richten. To arm a new generation against the creatures of the night, Van Richten has compiled his correspondence and case files into this tome of eerie tales and chilling truths.

Discover the mysteries of Ravenloft, mist-shrouded lands where infamous Darklords lurk among ageless vampires, zombie hordes, cosmic terrors, and worse. Then make your choice. Will you create your own Domains of Dread, settings to host endless terrifying adventures? Or will you join the ranks of haunted heroes who embrace macabre lineages, dual-edged Dark Gifts, haunted subclasses, and other forbidden powers?'

This week, Fiona and Hamilton finally decide to start an actual book club and begin their own epic quest to read the entirety of The Legend of Drizzt series of fantasy novels by R.A Salvatore. Starting in chronological order, our host set off with 'Homeland', the first book in The Dark Elf Trilogy, a prequel to The Icewind Dale Trilogy.

Published in 1990, 'Homeland' follows the story of Drizzt from around the time and circumstances of his birth and his upbringing amongst the drow (dark elves).

    From the blurb of 'Homeland':

"Travel back to strange and exotic Menzoberranzan, the vast city of the drow and homeland to Icewind Dale hero Drizzt Do'Urden. The young prince of a royal house, Drizzt grows to maturity in the vile world of his dark kin. Possessing honor beyond the scope of his unprincipled society, young Drizzt faces an inevitable dilemma. Can he live in a world that rejects integrity?"

Spoilers for The Wild Beyond The Witchlight

This week, Fiona and guest host Emily, from RPGeeks, turn their whimsical critiques to 'The Wild Beyond The Witchlight!'

From the 'The Wild Beyond The Witchlight' bio:

'Something wicked this way comes in a Feywild Adventure for Dungeons & Dragons fifth edition for players levels 1-8

Once every eight years, the fantastic Witchlight Carnival touches down on your world, bringing joy to one settlement after the next. Its owners, Mister Witch and Mister Light, know how to put on a good show. But there’s more to this magical extravaganza than meets the eye!

The carnival is a gateway to a fantastic Feywild domain unlike anything found on the Material Plane. Time has not been kind to this realm, however, and dark days lie ahead unless someone can thwart the dastardly schemes of the Hourglass Coven.'

This week, Fiona and Hamilton continue their deep dive into the Monk - a playable class from the original 5e Player's Handbook. Monks are spiritual ascetics and practitioners of a mystical energy known as ki, the magical essence which flows through all living things.

    According to the Player's Handbook:

'Whatever their discipline, monks are united in their ability to magically harness the energy that flows in their bodies. Whether channeled as a striking display of combat prowess or a subtler focus of defensive ability and speed, this energy infuses all that a monk does.

Monks make careful study of a magical energy that most monastic traditions call ki. This energy is an element of the magic that suffuses the multiverse—specifically, the element that flows through living bodies. Monks harness this power within themselves to create magical effects and exceed their bodies’ physical capabilities, and some of their special attacks can hinder the flow of ki in their opponents.

Using this energy, monks channel uncanny speed and strength into their unarmed strikes. As they gain experience, their martial training and their mastery of ki gives them more power over their bodies and the bodies of their foes.'

In this episode, we cover the following 8 subclasses:

Way of the Long Death (from SCAG)Way of the Drunken Master (from XGtE)Way of the Kensei (from XGtE)Way of the Sun Soul (from XGtE)Way of Mercy (from TCoE)Way of the Astral Self (from TCoE)Way of the Ascendant Dragon (from FToD)Way of the Cobalt Soul (from TCSR)

Note - during the episode, we incorrectly label 'the Way of the Cobalt Soul tradition as being found from the Explorer's Guide to Wildmount'. It comes from the 'Tal'dorei Campaign Setting Reborn' sourcebook.

Chapter discussed: 'Monks' from 'Ch. 4: Classes', 'Monks' from 'Ch. 1: Character Options', 'Monks' from 'Ch. 1: Character Options', 'Monks' from 'Ch. 1: Character Creation' and 'Monks' from 'Ch. 4: Character Options',

This week Fiona and ever-returning guest cohost Rob read through 'Trophy Gold', a roleplaying game about a group of treasure-hunters entering the haunted and forgotten places of the world.

The game tells the story of the treasure-hunters’ obsessive drive to seek ever greater riches in a desperate bid to stay alive. 'Trophy Gold' takes the collaborative, push-your-luck rules and rolls of its sister game, Trophy Dark, and blends them with the survive-by-your-wits mentality of old school fantasy games.

Instead of the ever-increasing power that comes with leveling up found in other games, treasure-hunters in Trophy Gold remain fragile, meaning death is always just one bad roll away.
