  • In this episode, I am joined by Lee Robinson; one of three brothers who founded ‘The Modern Day Goalkeeper’. Lee has had an incredible career, representing several professional clubs in Scotland including Rangers, Queen of the South and Dunfermline Athletic. After calling time on his career in 2019, he had amassed over 200 professional appearances. However, it was his experiences in the game that motivated him to change the way goalkeeping is viewed and trained in the footballing world. As a result, he and his two brothers started posting clips of them training on Instagram and twitter; new and innovative drills which completely challenged the way goalkeepers have traditional trained over the years. Now, they have one of the largest social media followings in the goalkeeping communities and are evolving everything from training methods, to the technology in the gloves we use.

    We discuss:

    · Experiences at Rangers and how the pressure of playing impacted performance · Self-doubt, anxiety, fear and how it impacts performance · Reflecting on training methods and the importance of creating realism · The power of positive thinking and manifesting the things you want out of your matches · The importance of effective coaching and the role of the coach in the goalkeeper-coach relationship · The importance of sacrifice and understanding that time is a commodity

Lee provides such great insight in this episode and challenges existing norms around what we believe to be ‘the correct way’ of viewing goalkeeping.

  • In this episode I'm joined by Macclesfield Town goalkeeper Conor O'Keefe. Conor's journey to the professional game has been far from orthodox. Having previously been released by the silkmen after a one year pro deal, Conor pursued his academic qualifcations at Loughborough University which is one of the worlds best academic institutions for high-performance sport. Following the completion of hsi degree and the set-up of his youtube page, he moved to Madrid as part of a year abroad studying. A season of professional football in Spain gave him the taste of football abroad and led him to move to Sweeden, completing two seasons in Scandanavia before returning home to Macclesfield.

Conor's journey is nothing short of remarkable and acts as a reminder that having a career in the game is possible for anyone; it just depends how badly you want it.

  • In this episode, I'm joined by non-league and former professional goalkeeper James Bransgrove. James was a young pro at Colchester United who took the brave decision to walk away from the professional game in pursuit of a career in finance and accounting. We discuss the importance of having a 'Plan B' and being proactive when it comes to planning your future as a young player. This episode is incredibly important for everyone involved in the game, as it highlights the benefits of forward thinking and planning for transition away from the game. There are countless examples of individuals who have not planned for life after football, which from time-to-time can result in adverse effects on Mental Health and Wellbeing. James exemplifies that when young players take the time to plan for their future, transitioning away from the game can be significantly easier and gives you a sense of purpose to achieve your goals moving forwards.

  • In this Episode I’m re-joined on the podcast by Bristol Rovers promotion winning goalkeeper James Belshaw. Belly has had an incredible year, being let go by Harrogate Town at the bottom of League 2, to winning promotion to League 1 in the course of a season. Belly’s journey highlights exactly why football is a game of opinions, and why an individual’s judgement of you is never final unless you choose to believe it. We reflect on how to deal with adversity, and how to use the mind to deal with opinions and drive performance. We discuss: Bristol Rovers crazy 7-0 win over Scunthorpe United to gain promotion Joey Barton and dressing room culture How to bed yourself into a team as a new goalkeeper Having his squad number changed from 1 to 21 and then being let go by Harrogate with no rationale or explanation Understanding what drives performance: revenge or determination Becoming a fan favourite and building relationships The importance of family and support networks on the career journey Plans for the future after football Q & A Football is one of the most cut-throat industries in the world with less than 0.01% of players currently in the system going on to have a career in the game. This episode is perfect to inspire goalkeepers everywhere on how to respond to adversity and how to deal with opinions that may not sit in your favour. An incredibly important episode delivered by a goalkeeper who has seen it all from the conference to the EFL.

  • In this special episode I’m joined by Bristol Rover’s James Belshaw (The Manager), Borehamwood’s Nathan Ashmore (The Bouncer) and Chesterfield’s Scott loach (The man with the merchandise) to discuss all things mindset and goalkeeping. We recorded this episode last season during lockdown and I’ve been excited to put it out ever since. These three are some of the biggest goalkeeping personalities I’ve had the pleasure of meeting and who knows, maybe one day well be part of Belly’s backroom staff.

    We discuss:

What mindset means and why it is different for each individual The biggest lessons they’ve learned throughout their careers and how their styles have adapted over time and through experience Belshaw Vs Mr Blobby – the story behind the Harrogate Town Vs Borehamwood play-off semi-final The research, analysis and psychology behind penalties The intricacies of contracts, life on furlough and the unseen parts of a professional goalkeeper The goalkeeper’s union, number 2’s and navigating one of football’s most awkward relationships The difference between training ground goalkeepers and the day-to-day pro’s Short sleeves Vs Long sleeves? • In this episode I’m joined by MK Dons and Oldham Athletic loanee Laurie Walker. Laurie’s journey has been a huge talking point in the Goalkeepers’ Union; plying his trade with Hemel Hempstead in non-league before securing a move to MK Dons and making his EFL debut whilst on loan at Oldham Athletic. With little EFL experience he hit the ground running, and is beginning to make a name for himself in the footballing world. He demonstrates the importance of mental flexibility and the relentless drive required to create your own path.

    We discuss:

Why goal-setting is a fundamental skill and not a boring cliché The victim mentality and what you can do to prevent yourself from being a victim of your circumstance Why ‘wanting it too much’ can cause overthinking and hinder your progress How having multiple income sources and diversification can reduce anxiety on the pitch Why you are a construct of your environment and how you can go about becoming more elite The mental advantage of waking-up early before others Going on loan at Oldham Athletic FC and making his EFL debut The importance of being present and taking each game as it comes

If you’re a non-league goalkeeper who dreams of playing in the EFL, this podcast will give you invaluable knowledge of how you can apply mindset to achieve your goals. Laurie’s career is a case that epitomises a bottom-up rise into the league. He demonstrates that the dream of becoming a professional footballer and playing in the league can be made a reality through application, a relentless drive to improve and developing a bulletproof mindset.

If you’re serious about improving your game both on and off the pitch, this one’s for you.

  • In this episode I’m joined by former Celtic FC and current Raith Rovers FC Goalkeeper Robbie Thomson. Robbie’s career developed through the ranks at Celtic FC where he was called up on several occasions to the Scotland Youth International setup. He shares his thoughts on how mindset has changed his perspective on goalkeeping and why young players today need to be mindful of the illusion that the ‘big club bubble’ can create when forging yourself a career at the top end of the game.

    We discuss:

How the environment at elite clubs can cause young players to overestimate their abilities The identity crisis you can experience when leaving a big club and how you can begin to compartmentalise and accept your situation The harsh realities of overestimating where you are in your career and what managers in the EFL are looking for in goalkeepers What Flow/The Optimal Performance Zone feel like Speaking to a psychologist and making himself vulnerable to improve performance in the long run Why mindset is always a work-in-progress How being released can either be seen as a negative or an opportunity to explore different opportunities in your career How different clubs have different performance expectations and how you can go about managing the pressure

Without going over the top, this episode is a must listen for all academy goalkeepers. Robbie has so much knowledge and experience after working in one of the football world’s most elite environments. I found myself reflecting on my career whilst recording this podcast - there are so many great lessons and knowledge bombs which may just alter the course of an aspiring professional goalkeeper’s career for the better.

If you want to add 1% to your game right now, I’m giving you 5% just in this one episode. It’s a hidden gem for sure.
