In this episode of The Goode Guide , I, Shannara Goode, dive deep into the pressing issue of burnout, especially as we approach the hectic holiday season. Having experienced the roller coaster of corporate life myself, I understand how overwhelming it can be to juggle personal and professional responsibilities, particularly during Q4, which is often a make-or-break time in retail.
I start the episode by sharing some personal reflections on my recent experiences in my new role, highlighting the challenges I've faced, including a significant port strike and a team member's resignation. Despite these hurdles, I found a sense of empowerment and recognition that reminded me of the impact I can have as a leader. This week felt different; it was a reminder that even amidst chaos, we can find moments of clarity and success.
To further explore the topic of burnout, I welcome Kate King, a Radiant Life Coach with over 17 years of experience as a licensed professional counselor. Kate brings a wealth of knowledge about the signs of burnout and the importance of prioritizing our mental and emotional well-being. We discuss how the pressures of modern life can lead to feelings of exhaustion and cynicism, and how it's crucial to recognize these signs before they escalate.
Kate emphasizes the importance of self-care and setting boundaries, especially for those in leadership positions. We talk about the need to compartmentalize our work and personal lives, advocating for a culture that respects our need for rest and rejuvenation. She shares valuable insights on how creativity can serve as a therapeutic outlet, helping us reconnect with ourselves and manage stress.
Throughout our conversation, we touch on the significance of being present and engaged in our lives, both personally and professionally. I share my own journey of rediscovering the importance of routine and how incorporating exercise into my mornings has drastically improved my mood and productivity.
As we wrap up, Kate offers advice on how to navigate the complexities of life and work, reminding us that nothing is permanent and that flexibility is key. We encourage listeners to prioritize their well-being and to be mindful of their needs, especially during this busy time of year.

In this episode of The Goode Guide , I had the pleasure of sitting down with Carolyn Simmons, a partner at Melitas Ventures, a venture capital fund that invests in innovative, emerging consumer brands. As someone who has navigated the complexities of both retail and consumer products, I was eager to explore Carolyn's insights on the evolving landscape of consumer packaged goods (CPG) and the critical role that investors play in the success of emerging brands.
We kicked off our conversation by discussing Carolyn's impressive background, which includes her experience at Goldman Sachs in the consumer and retail investment banking group, followed by her time at Sycamore Partners, a private equity firm. After earning her MBA from Harvard Business School, Carolyn joined Melitas Ventures, where she focuses on seed and Series A investments in the CPG space. Her passion for the consumer sector is evident, and she shared her excitement about working with brands that prioritize health and well-being.
Throughout the episode, we delved into the importance of building relationships between founders and investors. Carolyn emphasized that while capital is essential, the expertise and network that investors bring can be invaluable for emerging brands. We discussed the right timing for brands to approach investors, highlighting the significance of early conversations and feedback, even before a product is launched.
One of the key themes of our discussion was the emotional connection that consumers have with CPG products. Carolyn and I explored how the rise of health-conscious consumers is driving demand for cleaner, more transparent products. We touched on the growing trend of alternative meat products and the importance of ingredient recognition, as well as the shift towards eco-friendly cleaning products that avoid harmful chemicals.
As we navigated the conversation, I was particularly intrigued by Carolyn's perspective on talent-led brands versus homegrown startups. We discussed the unique challenges and expectations that come with celebrity-backed brands, emphasizing the need for authenticity and a strong product foundation to ensure long-term success.
Towards the end of our chat, Carolyn shared her personal journey and the lessons she's learned along the way. She encouraged aspiring founders to have confidence in their paths and to embrace the journey of testing and learning. Her insights resonated deeply with me, and I believe they will inspire many listeners who are navigating their own career journeys.
This episode is packed with valuable insights for anyone interested in the CPG space, whether you're a founder seeking investment or simply curious about the dynamics of the industry. I hope you enjoy listening to this conversation as much as I enjoyed having it!

Hey friends, it's Shannara Goode, your host of The Goode Guide podcast! This episode is all about catching up with you on some big changes in my life—both professionally and personally—over the summer break between seasons.
I’m excited (and honestly a little nervous) to share my journey from working as a senior manager in kids apparel to stepping into a director role in home decor at Target. This shift has been a ride—leading a bigger team, learning a whole new category, and figuring out a different way of working. It’s been overwhelming at times, but I’ve learned the value of being patient with myself, setting realistic expectations, and letting things fall into place.
On the personal side, I turned 33, and it hit me that balance and self-care are non-negotiable. I’ve been diving into some great books, taking better care of my mental and physical health, and—this is a big one for me—allowing myself guilt-free downtime. It's been such a game-changer.
As for the podcast, I can’t wait to bring in some amazing guests this season. We’re expanding The Goode Guide to include consulting and guidance for small business owners in retail, tapping into everything I’ve learned in the industry. I’m so pumped about this next chapter, and I hope it brings you even more value.
I just want to say a huge thank you to each of you for your support. Your encouragement means the world, and I can’t wait to continue this journey with you. So tune in to hear the full story, and stay connected for what’s coming next. Take care and talk soon!
