  • This week, we are happy to welcome author, podcaster and motivational speaker Kirsten Jones to The Hamilton Review Podcast!

In this conversation, Kirsten shares a lot of valuable information from her book, "Raising Empowered Athletes" including helping our kids move through discomfort, leaning into the things that we value as parents and helping them get to the other side.

Kirsten and Dr. Bob also talk about youth sports, burn out and more.

Parents, this is a must listen conversation!

Kirsten Jones is a motivational speaker, author, podcaster and Peak Performance Coach. Along with Susie Walton (mother of former NBA player and coach, Luke Walton, and three other peak-performing sons), she is the co-host of the popular #RaisingAthletes Podcast, based in Los Angeles.

Jones is an empowered, successful athlete herself: she played Division I volleyball and is a member of the William and Mary Athletics Hall of Fame. She was a fifteen year executive at NIKE in both Europe and the U.S.

Ten years ago, Kirsten was certified through a Tony Robbins life-coaching program, Strategic Intervention. She started life coaching, doing motivational speaking, coaching youth sports teams and writing a monthly blog. Sports have been a constant in her life- whether player herself, coaching her children, or working with athletes and their parents as a Peak Performance coach.

Over the last five years, Kirsten has spoken to thousands of middle school, high school, and college athletes: parents; coaches; and sports administrators about the increasing pressure to compete both on and off the court-- and how to thrive as both an athlete and a human being while effectively coping with all that pressure.

She is the mother of three athletes. One played Division I basketball at Boston University and is now playing for DIII at Claremont Graduate University while getting his MBA; a second son, also a Division I basketball player, is a sophomore at Colgate University; and a daughter who just finished high school and played club volleyball throughout, is now a freshmen at Loyola Marymount University Film School. Kirsten's super power is helping people get out of their heads and into their bodies so they can feel their best and perform beyond what even they dreamed possible.

Enjoy and share with your friends!

In 1972 an employment counselor asked Rich Capparela, "If you could be anything in the world, what would you be?" Without hesitation he replied, "A classical music radio announcer!" Today Rich is one of the best-known classical music radio personalities in the United States.

He joined Los Angeles classical radio station KUSC-FM in 1980 as the morning host. He's also known for his airwork at Southern California classical radio stations KMZT-FM and KFAC-FM. In 2009 he began an association with the Metropolitan Opera when he started hosting the Met's prestigious Western Region Finals competition. Since 1995 Capparela has hosted live radio broadcast concerts by the Pacific Symphony.

In December of 2001 as part of Los Angeles Music Week, Capparela was honored in chamber by the Los Angeles City Council for his contributions to the city's music community.

In 2002 Capparela provided program notes for the Los Angeles Guitar Quartet's Grammy nominated album LAGQ: Latin. Rich continued his association with the Grammys in February of 2004 when he presented the year's classical Grammys in Los Angeles. In January 2010 Capparela hosted the Grammy Salute to Classical Music honoring Placido Domingo.

  • This week, it is our pleasure to welcome author Tim Carney to The Hamilton Review Podcast! Tim Carney is an award-winning author, journalist, scholar, and speaker. He has covered culture and politics for nearly 25 years, has written four books, has spoken in cities around the U.S. (and even overseas), and has published thousands of columns and magazine articles. From electoral politics, lobbying, and crony capitalism, to culture, faith, and family, Tim’s work explores and explains a broad swath of the American landscape.

In this conversation, Tim discusses his new book, "Family Unfriendly."

Our culture tells parents there's one best way to raise kids: enroll them in a dozen activities, protect them from trauma, and get them into the most expensive college you can. If you can't do that, don't bother.

How is that going? Record rates of anxiety, depression, medication, debts, loneliness and more. In Family Unfriendly, bestselling author and Washington Examiner columnist Timothy P. Carney says it's time to end this failed experiment in overparenting.

Have more kids, have more fun, cancel the travel soccer games, let your kids wander off, and give them deeper sources of meaning than material success.

This is an old-fashioned view, but every day the evidence validates it. Drawing on rigorous research—both as a reporter and as a dad of six—Carney demonstrates why modern parenting is so misguided. The high standards set for modern American parenting are unrealistic and setting parents—and our kids—up to fail.

    Don't miss this important conversation!

Tim Carney is a senior fellow at the American Enterprise Institute, the senior columnist for the Washington Examiner, and the author of four books, most recently Alienated America and the forthcoming Family Unfriendly. He has written in the New York Times, Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, Atlantic, National Review, and many other newspapers and magazines. Tim has appeared on CNN, FOX News, MSNBC, CNBC, and PBS Newshour. Tim and his wife Katie raise six children in the Washington, D.C., area.
