  • We are on the brick of irreversible climate disruptions if we don't make radical changes in the next 10-20 years. How do we organize for system change on this timescale? How do we navigate a movement ecology full of ideological and organisational divides, when there is no option to leave the table, to "fold"? How do we plan to actually win? We explore these questions with our guests from the collective Climaximo and Last Generation Italy, starting from their book "All in: A Revolutionary Theory to Stop Climate Collapse" (authored by Mariana Rodrigues and Sinan Eden).

[Campfire Talk] Planning to win. How does the knowledge of climate collapse change how we organize?

The capitalist class has put our chips "all in" on the table. We no longer have the option to leave the game, to fold. Organising for "ruptural" change of the system is now the only thing that can avert ecological collapse. But how do we build the power to win, in the necessary timespan, in a climate justice movement that includes groups with very different tactics and aims?

[How to] Navigate crisis with a movement ecology mindset

It seams like the world is now in perpetual crisis and we all want to do something. But am I the right person to call for protest or should I support others to do it? In this [how to] section, we discuss the moments in which we question our position in the movement, learning to know when we should speak, hold a banner, plan a meeting, support others or throw the brick.

  • You might have heard of the AMOC collapse, but what is it, exactly? How does it work, and what does the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation do? If it "collapses", what's it going to mean for you and the rest of the world? In this episode, Robi explains the functioning of the AMOC, while M. and Ani ask some basic physics questions. We learn about the AMOC weakening, as well as some of the implications, especially for the Northern and Western Europe. Finally, in the [Offering], M. reads a poem suited to this season.

00:31 [Infospill] The physics and consequences of the AMOC collapse

The Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation has been weakening. Scientists who study it show changes in its behaviour, and the possibility of its collapse is being contemplated. This would mean huge changes globally, with rainfall and temperatures harshly influenced. In Western and Northern Europe, it might mean freezing winters with -40C degrees and summer droughts. In this [Infospill], we learn about how the AMOC functions and what is affecting it (surprise, surprise... what might it be...)

To ground ourselves in the now, M. will read "Recipe with gathered sadness". It is not only a poem, but an invitation to you - and if you do not have all the ingredients, do not worry, they can be replaced with locally sourced edibles & emotions.

  • In this episode we dig deeper into the dynamics that cause the accelerated warming, by examining the rules and factors that govern the global tug-of-war between greenhouse gases and aerosols. On the way we learn about the notion of climate sensitivity and how the IPCC has been systematically underestimating and underplaying the risks that we face. In the Offering section we learn how to avoid being overwhelmed by all this info, not by looking away, but by reorienting our attention to the living world around us.

[Infospill] The tug-of-war between aerosols & GHGs and how the IPCC underestimates climate sensitivity

According to Hansen et al., aerosols seem the most likely culprit behind the accelerated warming of the last decades. This scenario implies that the IPCC has been underestimating the cooling effect of aerosols and the warming potential of greenhouse gases all along. We explore what this means for the climate and our collective future.

[Offering] Feeling overwhelmed? An invitation to (re)connect

Taking in a lot of terrible news, including climate science, can be daunting. As Sara Ahmed argues, emotions are not private states, but they have a political dimension, shaping our bodies by what we pay attention to and shaping how we grow. So, this is an invitation to confront this overwhelming feeling by reorienting attention and tuning in to the more-than-human life around us.

  • How do activists organize in the biggest oil & gas exporting country in Europe? And do you know which one it is? In this [Campfire talk], Jonas from Extinction Rebellion will talk us through some of the specifics of the climate struggle in Norway, as well as present some big and small actions they did, some of them, with great results. You'll learn about how Norway distributes fossil fuel wealth differently, how activists respond to divers challenges and risks, and, in the last section you'll learn [How to] organize an occupation.

00:36 [Campfire talks] The case of Norway in the climate struggle. Actions and risks

Norway is one of the largest oil & gas exporters globally. At the same time, fossil fuel extraction is entangled with the country's welfare system, which makes it difficult to campaign against. Jonas tells us about the efforts of the local Extinction Rebellion chapter in organizing occupations and blockades to stop the flow of oil and change the public perception around it.

32:52 [How to] Organize a big occupation!? Lessons from a Norwegian case

Our guest describes the logistics involved in planning a big action, like the occupation of an oil rafinery. Scouting the location and the provision of food, transportation and a place to sleep prove to be as essential as the actual number of people willing to put their bodies on the line. Nonetheless, we learn that a small dedicated team is able to successfully organize such actions.

  • Why do we bother struggling against climate chaos? This thing is so huge and the worst of it will come after our lifetimes (maybe). In this episode of [Curious tendrils], we are exploring our feelings towards the close and far future. We think of squirrels who plan for their future by burying nuts and nurturing the forest. And we think of humans and what we've been doing for a long time: both building and destroying. We ask ourselves: What is our investment in the future? How can we live good lives and also become good ancestors, as Roman Krznaric proposes?

In the [Offering], we invite you to write a letter from the future, an exercise of visualisation from Joanna Macy and Molly Brown. We share our own letters full of curiosity, sadness and hope.

  • The rate of planetary warming seems to be increasing. This change has something to do with the Earth's albedo. Why is the planet darkening? And who is the "culprit" behind this acceleration? In this [Infospill], we explore one leading theory that has to do with aerosols and their cooling effect on climate. Later, in the [Offering], M. will share some thoughts on Earth's libido. [Infospill] Aerosols: a hidden driver of anthropogenic climate change

The history of the climate since the industrial revolution results from a tug of war between warming vs. cooling factors (GHGs vs. aerosols). Shifts in the trend of warming always link back to changes in these factors. In this episode we explore J Hansen's theory linking the accelerated warming observed in the last years with reductions of sulfate aerosols from China and international shipping.

  • This episode is part of [Curious Tendrils], a series of exploratory conversations about the questions we keep hearing around us, and the ones we're still learning how to hold. Today we ask ourselves: is urgency the spark that ignites climate action - or the flame that slowly burns us out? We discuss pros and cons of the climate emergency framework, looking at the current research. When "climte emergency" is declared, we have a formal recognition that climate change poses an existential threat. But what does this lead to? We each share where we stand, what might sit underneath these different approaches, and how we can move toward preventing climate chaos without losing our steadiness and hope.

In the [How to] section, Dani from the Artivists Network guides us through the process of guerrila projections: a relatively easy action that you can do with your friends and disrupt the public space with the inconvenience of your truth.

[Curious Tendrils] The climate emergency: So urgent we freeze?

We sit with one of the big tenstions in climate conversations: how do we talk about urgency, specifically in the case of the "climate emergency", but not only? Do we sound the alarm, backed by the hard facts of a worsening climate? Or do we focus more on resilience, on our capacity to respond, adapt, and build differently, even in the middle of crisis? Does strong, urgent language actually move people to act, or does it leave us overwhelmed and exhausted? And if the situation is urgent (which it is), how do we communicate that without creating paralysis?

  • Have you heard about accelerated warming? In this [Infospill] section we'll discuss James Hansen's research that has caused an uproar in the climate community, suggesting global heating has accelerated in trend. Unrelated to tipping points, this is a specific phenomenon that has to do with the cooling effect of aerosols, making everything infinitely worse... To make up for the grim news, in the [Offering] section we will touch upon how slowing down is good for us and how sleep is political.

[Infospill] Global warming unchained as sulfate aerosols decline worldwide

In the last 3 years the Earth has experienced levels of warming that cannot be fully explained by current climate models. The main causes could be (i) natural variability in the climate, (ii) a new cloud feedback due to warming or (iii) reductions in global sulfate aerosols which have a cooling effect. We explore mostly the explanation by Hansen and others that aerosols reductions due to a new shipping fuel regulations are the central actor in the story, and how their impact has been underestimated by the models used by the IPCC. Implications of this scenario are explored in future episodes.

[Offering] Sleeping in the dark - a response to a sped-up society

Sleep is what happens when our bodies are tired, but also relaxed, also, ideally, safe. Globally, humans are kind of sleep deprived. Insufficient sleep is considered to be a public health epidemic that is unrecognized. That's not going well at all, neither for us, not for the Earth. I want us, you, to take a look at your sleep patterns. What sleep do you need to recharge?

  • Over the eons, Earth's thermostat spent a lot of time stuck on either bone chilling cold or smothering hot saunas. If something pushes the climate out of one setting, it irreversibly wanders until reaching the other - there is no inbetween. You wouldn't know it, but we are currently living in the freezer. Humans evolved here and we find it quite pleasant and so do most species. Now, the fossil fuel emissions we put in the air risk switching the thermostat or even breaking it. In this [Infospill] Robi and Ani explore what this means for our future: will current global warming push the climate into a new warm phase? And what would this "Hothouse" trajectory mean for humans and non-humans? As an [Offering] to soothe our worried hearts, M. prepared a poetry reading of "Queer Ecologies" by Ceza Bularca.

[Infospill] Tipping cascades and the Hothouse Earth state

Over hundred of millions of years, the climate has switched back and forth between "Coolhouse" and "Warmhouse"/"Hothouse" phases. Natural processes, like volcanism and rock weathering, initiate these changes, which are then sustained by a chain-reaction or "cascade" of activating tipping point systems. On this timescale, Earth has been cooling for quite a while. Now, as we approach the threshold for several key Earth system tipping points, the major unspoken rick that we face is that our fossil fuel-driven warming could jolt the climate to a path leading irreversibly back to a Hothouse phase.

  • In this [Campfire Talk], you're dropped into the post-COVID lanscape of Polish grassroots activism, where our guest Nawi - an anti-gas campaigner - and her tight-knit crew of friends, known as bombelki, refused to settle for stagnation and instead ignited a new rebellion against the fossil-fuel lobby's carefully crafted lies. This is a story of success that hasn't stopped unfolding - and one we can learn from in real time. And perhaps, gather our own friends for strategy meetings, as we explore in the [How To] section of this episode.

[Campfire Talk] How do you organize in a small group?

    Learnings from Poland's climate activism

You'll hear how bombelki built a narrative designed to expose industry greenwashing, how they took on GazSystem with fearless, playful defiance, and how four people - just four - proved that friendship, creativity, and a refusal to overcomplicate can grow local activism. What began as a small rogue collective soon evolved into a national force, growing rapidly as they re-emerged under a new name, The Last Generation (@ostatniepokolenie)

    [How to] organise strategy meetings

When you are just starting out, strategy can be overwhelming, especially if the group is small and you don't have a lot of activist experience. Nawi tells us that the first things to figure out are what your short and long-term goals are, who are the people you are trying to reach and who are your enemies, the "bad guys". Once these are known, it will be easier to develop a plan of action.

  • Is the planet's atmosphere like a boilling pot of stuff and are the Earth's possible states like two valleys connected by a hill? Welcome to an [Infospill] episode of weird metaphores trying to grasp the horrible truths of climate tipping points. "Grim" is our key word but do not despair! We still have a choice for which future we want. As an [Offering], we present to you the idea of the Climate Cafe - a space in which to discuss all the climate feels you might have.

[Infospill] The climate tipping points we trigger as the planet warms

Climate tipping elements are subsystems that act like they have a mind of their own after crossing a certain threshold, continuing to unfold even if we cut emissions. As we cross 1.5°C in the following years, some elements will already be triggered (coral reef die-off, ice sheets melting); 3°C might trigger most of them (AMOC collapse, Amazon die-back etc). Not all will bring additional warming, but all will have an extreme impact on regional weather and potentially push the climate towards runaway warming.

[Offering] Climate Cafe: the place to breath climate-anxiety away

Climate Cafes are meant to be a quiet, reflective experience in which to process your feelings towards climate chaos with others like you. They are not designed to lead people to conclusions or action, not are they spaces of therapy. Anyone can lead one, and everyone can participate in making the space safe. Have you been to one, or started one? Tell us in the comments on Instagram or Facebook!

  • In our first [Campfire Talk] episode, Andrei, an ecology student and activist, shares his experience with studying firefly populations in Romania, where the lives of these diminishing groups of insects are especially understudied. You'll find out why they are having trouble surviving our current extractive era and also, what you can do about it, in our first [How to] segment!

[Campfire Talk] The decline of firefly populations and the signs of ecological collapse. w/ Andrei

What are some signs that firefly populations are disappearing? From change in land use to the spread of pesticides, a lot of current practices are affecting the lives of firefly species. So much so that we might indeed be the last generation to see some of them.

[How to] Do citizen science: monitor firefly populations in your area! w/ Andrei

You can get to know where your neighbourhood fireflies live. Like our guest said, "you can't protect something [someone] before getting to know it [them] first". So learn how to do it and, when summer approaches, go out and look around.

  • In the first [Infospill] episode we are going over a few main points of actuality – what is the current level of warming, what climate projections say about the future and why the IPCC is recklessly conservative in its recommendations. At the end, we have an [Offering] to consider where we can start from if we want to fight for a different world.

[Infospill] Mainstream climate projections and how they underrepresent risk

Robi shares with us grim climate projections about our common future. We talk about how fossil fuel emissions are still growing each year and how the IPPC fails to correctly represent the risk of a runaway warming. To avoid this future, we need drastic changes SOON.

[Offering] Don't know what to do? Check The Climate Action Venn Diagram

How can you come up with climate solutions? M suggests trying to do the Climate Action Venn Diagram invented by marine biologist Ayana Elizabeth Johnson. Fill up the answer to the following questions in three overlapping circles and tell us what you find out:

    - What are you good at? What are your areas of expertise? What can you bring to the table?

    - What work needs doing? Are there particular climate and justice solutions you want to focus on?

    - What brings you joy?
