Wrapping up Dayen posits a strong theory on a Conservative push to use rising prices amid tariffs to justify tax cuts, before watching some open criticisms of Trump from Ron Johson and Ted Cruz.

It's an EmMajority Report Thursday! The guests will be political analyst Omar Baddar on Israel's renewed attacks in Gaza, and Paris Marx, host of the podcast "Tech Won't Save Us," about how Elon Musk is running Tesla into the ground.
First, Emma runs through updates on Trump’s tariff turmoil and responses in both the Senate and House, Mike Waltz’s security issues, Laura Loomer’s return to the White House, Israel’s seizure of land in Gaza, a joint US-Israel attack on Syria, Netanyahu’s visit to Hungary, and Eric Adams’ announcement that he’s running as an independent, before diving deeper into Trump’s tariff announcement, including the bunk equation they used to calculate this policy, and the obvious, extensive impact it will have on everyday Americans. Omar Baddar then joins, jumping right into Israel’s major escalations to their ongoing ethnic cleansing of Gaza, with Netanyahu’s recent announcement that Israel would be going ahead with a full-scale land seizure in North Gaza, adding a “second Philadelphi Corridor” south of Gaza City amid their revamped military barrage, all under the dishonest pretense of saving the hostages. Baddar and Emma then look to Israel’s expansion of hostilities even outside of the genocide of Palestinians, with repeated bombardments against Lebanon – including occasional strikes on Beirut – ongoing despite an alleged ceasefire, unpacking the country’s (and Netanyahu’s) extensive history of pushing an agenda of regional chaos to bolster their position as Middle East watchdogs for the West, with Israel serving major roles in spurring the US invasion of Iraq in 2003 and in gutting the Iran Nuclear deal under Trump 1.0. Omar wraps up by touching on the growing backlash to Israel’s belligerency on the international stage, and whether there is hope to be found in both regional and global actors turning away from the US-Israel imperial coalition.
Paris Marx then gets right into the wonderful revelations in Tesla’s quarterly earnings report, walking through the devastating drop in sales amid mass recalls, a diversifying EV market, and overwhelming global backlash to the fascist politics of Elon Musk. Marx then tackles the particular failures of Tesla’s *ONLY* new major model release in recent years with the Cybertruck, and how it represents the greater issue of allowing a deranged billionaire to make outrageous promises completely detached from the material reality of both his company and modern technology, before shifting to the explosive impact Chinese products are currently having on the EV market, with BYD proving clear affordability and profitability even in European markets, developments that are all in line with America’s dwindling role as a global economic leader. Paris and Emma wrap up by examining the growing existential threat facing Elon Musk and his companies as backlash to his corrupt business practices and corrupt politics hits back at Tesla and Starlink profits in Europe and Canada, all while he continues to tie his billionaire lifestyle to the worth of those stocks.

Later, Rohan Grey, Assistant Professor of Law at Willamette University, discusses his latest research on the Trump administration’s attempt to seize direct political control over the core payments software of the Treasury’s Bureau of the Fiscal Service, which handles spending for most of the federal government, to block funds to politically disfavored agencies and programs. First, they run through updates on the victory by liberal Susan Crawford in the Wisconsin Supreme Court race, Democrats’ growing margins in deep-red regions, Trump’s tariff fears, the GOP’s anger at proxy voting for new parents, Mike Waltz Gmail whoopsie, Senator Cory Booker’s marathon filibuster, the closure of free measles vaccine clinics in Texas amid a breakout, Ed Martin nomination for D.C. U.S. Attorney, Tesla’s tanking earnings, and the Senate GOP’s budget reconciliation, before expanding on the beautiful revelations around the toxicity of Elon Musk in US politics as seen in the incredible leftward swing amid his intense campaigning for conservative Brad Schimel Wisconsin. Robert Weissman then joins, first previewing the typical work of Public Citizen including advocacy, litigation, and organizing on behalf of the public against corporations, touching on everything from trade and consumer financial protection to drug pricing and campaign finance laws. Weissman then unpacks Public Citizens tactical shift under Trump 2.0, walking through the various legal battles they have taken on against Trump’s attempt to dismantle the federal U.S. government through executive reform, with a particular focus on their case to save the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau – an agency birthed from the 2008 Financial Crisis’ overwhelming impact on consumers – also touching on their effort to protect USAID and the Department of Education. Robert, Sam, and Emma expand on these lawsuits' ultimate goal of preventing the full-scale deletion of these agencies, understanding that, even with success, the Trump Administration will constantly be searching for (and finding) new ways to obstruct any accountability or pushback from this project, and focusing instead on ensuring the potential of rebuilding under future leadership, before wrapping up by looking to the upcoming fights over Trump’s insistence on using his executive power to fire any and everybody, and the role of “national emergencies” in bolstering executive power. Rohan Grey then joins, diving right into Elon Musk’s outrageous (and obviously untrustworthy) agenda of digitizing America’s fiscal regime, stepping back to walk through the process by which US fiscal policy operates, with said policy – be it spending, taxation, issuing debt, etc – originating in Congressional legislation, moving through the Office of Management and Budget under the President to manage the allocated spending over the allotted time, to the Treasury’s instructions with the Federal Reserve as the ultimate entity in charge of the dollars. After expanding on the utter absurdity of Elon’s plan – outside of if, perhaps, you wanted to completely rid the system of accountability or pushback – Rohan, Sam, and Emma parse through DOGE’s opaque takeover of the Bureau of Financial Services amid their project to indiscriminately cut funds, including Elon setting up an obvious assault on Social Security, wrapping up by expanding on what a botched system shift for the federal payment systems would look like, and assessing a more realistic idea for bringing our systems into the modern era.

First, they run through updates on today’s elections in Wisconsin and Florida, Trump’s attack on the US public health regime, tomorrow’s tariff deadline, the Senate GOP’s budgetary sleight of hand, legal pushback to Trump over voting restrictions and his reclassification of protected Venezuelan migrants, Trump’s ongoing renditioning of Latin Americans to an El Salvadorian gulag, the mobilization of far-right militia’s to protect Musk’s businesses, Trump’s targeting of Harvard, Cory Booker’s filibuster, and dwindling Canadian tourism to the US, also watching Jesse Watters explain exactly why he (and the rest of the right) doesn’t care about due process. Rachel Cohen then dives Trump’s successful effort to cow some of the biggest law firms in the US – including her former firm of Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom – unpacking precisely what makes these law firms so “important” to Trump (wealthy clients, billions in profits), and the intimate relationship they have with the political elite, before walking through the actual contents of Trump’s threats to these firms’ contracts and access to federal buildings (e.g. courts), and why, unlike others, Skadden seemed to capitulate without even facing an Executive Order, including handing over $100m in pro-bono work to the administration. Expanding on this latter element, Cohen tackles the Trump Administration’s underlying aims for this authoritarian push against these attorneys elite, with the push against DEI policies, the takeover of pro-bono work, and the Executive Orders chilling pushback to Trump’s anti-migrant and anti-trans agenda coming at a time where he and his goons are undercutting due process for migrants and criminalizing trans identity. After touching on the mix of hubris and cowardice driving the executive capitulation in the world of corporate law, and what the internal pushback looks like among Cohen’s peers, Rachel, Sam, and Emma wrap up by reemphasizing the real goal of Trump’s project – a fascist takeover – and the importance of organized dissent.

It's an EmMajority Report Thursday! Emma speaks with David McWilliams, Irish economist and writer, to discuss Trump's interest in the presidency of William McKinley. Then, she speaks with Lily Greenberg Call, former political appointee in the Biden administration, to discuss the recent developments in the detention of Mahmoud Khalil. First, Emma runs through updates on the Senate’s vote on cloture and the Continuing Resolution, Trump’s mass layoffs, the gutting of the DOE, Trump’s trade war with Europe, the falling stock market, Trump’s failed nomination for CDC director, Tim Walz’s political tour, the UN’s independent inquiry into Israel’s genocide, the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the Mayor of Miami’s crackdown on free speech, and the attack on the IRS, before expanding on the ongoing fight within the US Senate to block the GOP’s partisan Continuing Resolution which would effectively neuter Congress amid Trump’s reign, and watching Markwayne Mullin accidentally give away the game on Trump’s tariff war. David McWilliams then dives right into the historical context for Trump’s obsession with William McKinley – 25th President of the United States – highlighting how the election of McKinley in 1896 served as a major turning point in the evolution of the Gilded Age, as a culmination of a populist push against growing economic consolidation amid increasing culture war and a rapidly growing (and changing) working class with an influx of European immigration, and the very clear parallels with how Trump is handling the similarities in this moment, from his alignment with the monopolists and oligarchs of the time, to his obsession with small territorial acquisitions while pushing an isolaitonist economic agenda. After touching on the end to McKinley with his assassination in 1901 and the major role his Vice President Teddy Roosevelt would play in pushing back against the political takeover of robber barons and monopolists, putting a bit of a damper on potential parallels to the Big Tech-backed JD Vance, McWilliams walks Emma through McKinley’s expansive project to bolster the pockets of his wealthy donors, from cementing the shift to a gold standard (crypto reserve anyone?!) and bolstering rail monopoly at the expense of America’s farming majority, to the inception of lobbying with the backing of his 1896 campaign by notorious businessman Mark Hanna (Musk), who would rally the wealthy elite behind McKinley to change the facts on the ground. Having briefly expanded on McKinley’s imperial agenda, and the particular role it plays in creating an atmosphere of chaos to mask the kleptocracy at work, David looks to the extreme lengths Trump has taken McKinley tariff regime, applying them to quite literally every close ally the US has in such a drastic manner it offers little explanation outside of in-group speculation while the economy as a whole collapses. They wrap up the interview by touching on the role McKinleyism and the Gilded Age played in spurring the emergence of the US labor movement under FDR. Lily Greenberg-Call then joins as she and Emma parse through the abduction and detainment of Columbia University activist and Greencard holder/permanent US resident Mahmoud Khalil over his speech in support of a free Palestine, reflecting on the vast distance between the response Chuck Schumer gave – largely defending Israel and denouncing Khalil’s speech – and that of Chris Murphy – who cites the criminalization of speech that goes against Trump’s agenda in contrast with the happy embrace of explicitly Nazi speech. Next, they dissect the particularly disgusting way in which antisemitism has been abused over this fight, from the White House’s explicit references to judaism in their flaunting of this authoritarian overstep, to the fact that the statute they’re using to defend their action is grounded in the antisemitic McCarthyist movement, and the value of seeing Jewish Americans stand up and fight for Mahmoud Khalil’s rights, wrapping up the interview by emphasizing the need to keep that momentum going, showing up in the streets to fight for Khalil and any other victims of the Trump regime.
And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Brandon Sutton and Matt Binder as they unpack dweebs Tim Pool and Russell Brand’s fear of a real punk rock lifestyle (shoutout Against Me!), before talking to Rob from DC about calling our Senators. Wrapping up, Habash looks to the devastating impact Trump’s DOE cuts will have on special education in the US, and what to make of our major educational institutions fully acquiesing to the regime. It's News Day Tuesday! Sam and Emma speak with Lindsey Boylan, former government official, to discuss Andrew Cuomo's recent announcement that he'll be running for Mayor of New York. First, they run through updates on Trump’s trade war and the related economic turmoil, the GOP’s impending government shutdown, the attempted deportation of Columbia University student Mahmoud Khalil, Ukraine’s offensive on Moscow, Rubio’s small ask to Ukraine (give up your land to Russia), the NIH’s anti-vax pivot as RFK blames measles on nutrition, Trump’s attacks on the ACA, SCOTUS’ approach to conversion therapy bans, legal pushback to DOGE and OPM, and the dropping net work of Trump’s billionaire backers, before expanding on the incredible showing in support of Mahmoud Khalil at Foley Square in NYC yesterday, contrasted with Long Island politician Bruce Blakeman attempt to push blatantly false, islamophobic conspiracy, with no evidence to back himself up. Lindsey Boylan then joins, first walking through her own background working former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, beginning in 2016 and making her way up to a senior member of his team and special advisor, all while Cuomo consistently exercised his station to maintain a culture of sexual harrassment and exploitation, tackling her own experiences with Cuomo’s sexual misconduct. After briefly jumping back to today to unpack the astonishing embrace of (or, at least, acquiesence to) Andrew Cuomo by New York politicians in the wake of his announced campaign for Mayor, Boylan, Sam, and Emma dive deep into the extensive investigations into Cuomo’s administration by the city, state, and federal government, all of which confirmed a minimum of a dozen victims of Cuomo’s abuses, and how the following suits from his victims – including both a woman younger than his daughters and the state trooper charged with taking a bullet for him – has resulted in Cuomo leveling $60 million of taxpayer money to harrass, demean, and discredit his accusers and their families. Lindsey ealso xplores Cuomo’s still-existent path to victory in his fight against accountability, with Cuomo using America’s refusal to address sexual harrassment beyond civil charges to further discredit these cases, while the campaign of lawfare and public harrassment continues with little-to-no pushback from the Democratic establishment, wrapping up by touching on the importance of leaving the former governor off of your fully-ranked ballot in the NYC primary this year.
And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma struggle to empathize with Elon Musk’s multi-billion dollar losses and ongoing business struggles amid his attempted takeover of the US government, before watching Newsmax host Rob Schmitt attempt to defend Trump’s economic turmoil. They also dive deep into Sam’s appearance on Jubilee and the absurd attempts by the online right to reconcile the idiocracy of their movement, before watching RFK cuck himself to the Trump Administration hazing ritual as he digs into fast food and makes fun of dying turtles, plus, your calls and IMs!
