It's News Day Tuesday! Sam and Emma speak with Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-WA-07) to discuss what to expect from the upcoming Trump administration's immigration agenda, and how the Republican-controlled Congress might govern. First, Sam and Emma check in on Pete Hegseth's confirmation hearing for Defense Secretary, with Virginia Sen. Tim Kaine putting the screws to him on the allegations against Hegseth regarding numerous instances of infidelity and sexual misconduct (to say nothing of the financial mismanagement!) Then, they speak with Rep. Jayapal, first discussing her role on the Judiciary Committee as ranking member of the immigration subcommittee, her thoughts on the Laken Riley Act that is making its way through the Senate, and what to expect from the incoming Trump administration when it comes to mass deportation efforts. She then discusses what to expect from the Congressional Progressive Caucus now that she is no longer chair (she is chair emerita however!) under Rep. Greg Casar's stewardship, and where Democrats can go in terms of messaging to have more success then they did in November's elections.

Happy Monday! Sam and Emma speak with Richard Seymour, writer & commentator based in London, to discuss his recent book Disaster Nationalism: The Downfall of Liberal Civilization. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on the still-burning LA Fires, the GOPâs tie of California aid to Trumpâs debt ceiling raise, the second Trump Administration, the Laken Riley Act, the TikTok ban, Jack Smithâs resignation, and Bidenâs immigration move, before touching on the Democratic Partyâs continuing inability to act like an opposition party with just seven days to Trumpâs inauguration, and watching GOP Senator John Barrasso put the rightâs inhumanity on full display over the ongoing devastation in California. Richard Seymore then joins, diving right into his idea of âDisaster Nationalismâ as a type of proto-fascism that seeks to take the ever-increasing frequency of real-world disasters with often abstract causes (climate change, inequality, etc) and tie them to singular, concrete perpetrators, frequently represented by ethnic and political minorities, tackling examples out of Oregon in the wake of the 2020 wildfires and Gujarat following the 2002 train burning â with the latter providing a particularly gruesome lens into Disaster Nationalismâs emphasis on extreme ethnic violence as a key selling point, as it provides an outlet for pent-up anxiety rather than a solution to its real causes. After expanding on Disaster Nationalismâs complex relationship to democracy (as a tool) and dedication to capitalism, Seymore walks Sam and Emma through the centrally motivating role of economic anxiety in this equation, tackling its distinction to general economic deprivation in its emphasis on loss and social status, looking at how the hyper-individualism of neoliberalism exacerbates socio-economic inequality while blaming those on the losing end for their situation, cultivating a sadistic culture of pseudo-meritocracy that craves social distinction, something threatened by any attempt to deconstruct the dominant hierarchies. After touching on the particular display of Disaster Nationalism developing in Israelâs ongoing genocide of Gaza, Richard, Sam, and Emma then look at the role of the left in combatting these pressures, tackling the history of trade unions in leading the fight against fascism, and the importance of organizing when it comes to finding agency, empowerment, and community in the face of systems that want you to have anything but.
And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma watch Hasan Pikerâs pressing interviews with LAâs incarcerated firefighters, Newsmaxâs Rob Finnerty pins the fires on the donkey (Dems⊠and DEI), and Leninade unpacks the unfounded argument that any city couldâve contained the climate devastation facing LA right now. Osita Nwanevu then joins, jumping right into the late developments of Trumpâs myriad legal woes over this last year, and the overwhelming feeling that our next president will be completely unaccountable while feeling completely untouchable, also touching on the genuine recognition of Trump as a problematic felon by the public, and why that simply didnât matter when it came to their open-faced rejection of the Democratic Partyâs institutionalist centrism. Expanding on this latter element, Nwanevu, Sam, and Emma walk through the Democratsâ inability to act as a capable opposition party, never presenting any semblance of an alternative when it comes to rhetoric and policy around the GOPâs key issues (immigration) or their own (healthcare), and often preferring to jump on board with the right in the hopes that it will legitimize their role in politics. Sandeep Vaheesan then joins, briefly unpacking his initial reactions to the environmental catastrophes unfolding in California right now and the incremental technocratic improvements to the USâ climate agenda under Biden, before diving into the surprising buoying of US energy infrastructure on â get this â publicly owned or cooperative utilities. Expanding on that latter point, Vaheesan parses through the history of the public sectorâs role in US energy infrastructure, starting with the New Dealâs attempt to address the dearth of electrification in rural and farming communities, with FDR moving to recognize electricity as a necessity, rather than a luxury, and establishing the Rural Electrification Agency, which helped to expand access farmer access to electricity from 1 in 10 to 9 in 10, before diving deep into the extensive and overwhelming response from private industry, from the expansive propaganda effort â reviewing, rewriting, and replacing textbooks, purchasing newspaper space, and more â through their powerful push against regulatory institutions. Moving forward through the beginning of the neoliberal turn, Sandeep brings Emma through the process of the privatization of energy grids under this deregulation process, making room for the atrocious grid management we see from Texas nowadays, before wrapping up with the recent reemergence of initiatives for expanding publicly-owned utilities. Hayden Clarkin then joins, running through a brief history of the four-year âwill they, wonât theyâ between NYC and congestion pricing despite the obvious benefits it would provide the city. Next, Clarkin walks through the major progress congestion pricing has already provided, with incredible improvements to traffic and emergency vehicle response time, with all of the funding benefits still unrealized. They also unpack the genuine divide between the productive possibilities of public works and the growing disillusionment and discontent with the USâ political institutions, wrapping up with the ongoing battle between Jersey and NYC over this move.

First, Sam and Emma run through updates on the DoJâs release of details related to Trumpâs Jan 6th- and Stolen Documents-related cases, mass evacuations amid wildfires in LA, Demâs retaining of the Virginia legislature, the North Carolina Supreme Courtâs anti-democratic move, the Houseâs massive anti-immigration bill, DoJ action over the RealPage rent-fixing scheme and the prior weaponization of the department under Trump, Israelâs ongoing slaughter of Gazans in supposed safe zones, and ACA expansion, before unpacking a recent report on the unsurprising misinformation around gender-affirming care for adolescents. Lee Hepner then joins, jumping right into an extensive history of Net Neutrality, stemming from the establishment of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) under FDRâs New Deal to preserve open networks and fair communication, with the 1996 Communications Act expanding its coverage to the internet and contributing to the arguments to expand to full Net Neutrality building under Bush before coming to fruition under Obama, only to be killed and restored by Trump and Biden respectively, all leading to the recent 6th Circuit decision to, once again, kill it. Joshua Kaplan then walks Sam and Emma through his extensive reporting on the far-right militia American Patriots 3% (AP3), tackling their role within the wider extremist militia ecosystem and how they used that to distance the organization from the January 6th insurrection attempt before having a wider discussion on the initial backlash (even internally) to these organizations in the wake of 1/6 before a steady rhetorical pivot from Trump and the GOP reversed the tides completely, and why that should concern us heading into a second Trump Administration with threats of mass pardoning for violent participators and organizers of 1/6. After expanding on AP3âs odd âbig tentâ identity amid right-wing militias, Kaplan touches on his extensive conversations with a mole from AP3 and the role Facebook played in the militiaâs outreach, before wrapping up with the genuine threat posed by the extensive military training of these groups, both offered by the groups themselves and aided by their extensive connections to police, military, and veteran organizations.

It's Casual Friday! Sam & Emma speak with Jeet Heer, national affairs correspondent for The Nation, to discuss the upcoming stories to watch in 2025. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on the House vote over the GOP Speakership, Trumpâs transition team, Bidenâs blocking of the Nippon Steelâs takeover of US Steel, GOP judges killing Net Neutrality, the identities behind the attacks in New Orleans and Las Vegas, California captive audience ban, Bird Flu, SEIU action, and Social Security retirement age requirements, before expanding on todayâs big Speakership vote as Mike Johnson begins to feel the heat. Jeet Heer then joins, diving right into todayâs ongoing fight over the Speakership, unpacking why, despite all the groveling, the GOP is likely to stand firm in line, just as they do with Trump. Next, Heer, Sam, and Emma parse thoroughly through the OTHER ongoing fight amid the GOP over the validity of H-1B Visas, a work visa for immigrants that puts their rights and wellbeing entirely in the hands of the corporation that employs them, unpacking the pro-H-1B (letâs exploit immigrants) and anti-H-1B (no, we hate immigrants!) arguments on the right, before diving deeper into a genuine leftist critique of how these visaâs work to lower rights for both workers and immigrants writ large, and the rightâs desire to use them as a part of their Social Darwinist vision. Jeet also expands on the failing tactic among progressive Democrats to work within the DNC power structure, tackling the potential for a new progressive movement to build up power in the House and Senate outside of the party infrastructure, and the growing possibility of said movement as we enter an era of seemingly anti-system electorate, also responding to some pushback about the mutual-exclusion of being a party outsider while still working with the party, before wrapping up with a brief conversation on Jordan Peterson, Pierre Poilievre, and the state of Canadian politics.
And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma parse through the ongoing discourse from the GOP over H-B1 visas, as the embrace of the exploitation of immigrants comes in conflict with the rejection of those immigrants themselves, with Charlie Kirkâs crew helping to add some âDEIâ dog-whistling into the mix. They also watch Mike Johnson sulk his way out of Congress until his ultimate victory in the speakership vote, and Sam walks the audience through the absurdities of Social Securityâs income cap, plus, your calls and IMs!

The MR Crew is back from the break with the first live show of 2025! First, Sam and Emma discuss their outlook for 2025, from the perspective of the show itself, as well as what to watch for when it comes to Congress (House gridlock, grim Senate judicial appointments), the courts themselves (upcoming SCOTUS decisions, the John Roberts annual report), and the new Trump administration (immigration hawkishness). They then check in on the right's response to the truck attack in New Orleans, where Trump and his allies are desperately trying to peg the violent attack to illegal immigration when, it turns out, the perpetrator was a U.S. citizen and an Army veteran. Sam and Emma then discuss the right's dust up over H1B visas, with the tech side (Vivek, Elon) advocating feverishly for visas for skilled foreign workers against the nativist side (Charlie Kirk, Bannon), who believe Trump's mandate rests upon curbing all kinds of immigration. It seems interesting, Sam and Emma contest, that now, after the extreme bankrolling of his campaign by Elon Musk, Trump has surprisingly taken kindly to H1B visas, something his 1st administration tried to crack down on!
And in the Fun Half, Sam, Emma, and the MR Crew discuss Chuck Schumer surprisingly endorsing Ben Wikler for DNC chair, the discourse around what it means to be "anti-establishment", and Patrick Bet-David's frustration with Twitter's Community Notes function for calling him a scammer online. It's Casual Friday! Sam and Emma speak with Ryan Grim, reporter at and co-founder of Drop Site News, co-host of Counter Points, to round up the week in news before the holidays. First, Sam and Emma take a look at the spending fight on Capitol Hill after House Republicans failed to pass a continuing resolution to keep the government open. They take a look at CNN's Kaitlan Collins trying to figure out how New York Rep. Mike Lawler can blame House Republicans' failure to pass a spending bill on...Democrats. Then, they're joined by Rep. Ocasio-Cortez as she gives her breakdown of what is happening in the spending fight on the ground on the Hill, and how Elon Musk essentially tanked all forward progress with his posts on Twitter. Heading into a broader discussion, AOC discusses the House Oversight Committee race for ranking member, how she is interpreting that in terms of progress, and she understands her motivations and advocacies as someone steeped in the process of mass movements while representing such an institutional body in Congress. She ends the conversation by framing losses (both in the Oversight Committee and in November) as ones that should not always be seen as fully definitional and declarative of a struggle being completely lost, and take what slight progress they represent as motivation and the impetus to continue to fight for what she, and we, believe in. Then, Ryan Grim joins the program to react to some of AOC's comments, as well as to discuss the fast track to oligarchy this country is on seeing that Elon Musk basically dictated a continuing resolution bill not pass in Congress. Sam, Emma, and Ryan discuss the trajectory they think the Musk/Trump relationship may take and what that would like (potentially catastrophic), and what kind of implications and knock-on effects shutting the government down for the rest of Trump's transition would have.
