It's an EmMajority Report Thursday! She speaks with Allison J. Pugh, professor of sociology at Johns Hopkins University, to discuss her recent book The Last Human Job: The Work of Connecting in a Disconnected World. Then, she's joined by Zachary Foster, author of the Palestine Nexus newsletter, to discuss Trump's recent announcements and intentions to "take over" the Gaza Strip. First, Emma runs through updates on the DOJ’s restriction on Elon & Cronies’ access to Treasury data, skyrocketing union membership among federal employers, Musk’s access to Health Payment Systems, cuts to the FAA and the destruction of USAID, the trickle of opposition from Democrats, Trump’s intent to ethnically cleanse Gaza, Trump’s ban of trans girls and women from athletic competition, US birthright citizenship, global warming, and brutal jail riots out of Congo, before diving a little deeper into the absurdly creepy stunt Trump attempted to pull with signing his most recent anti-trans legislation, and the violently inhumane response from the likes of Jesse Watters. Professor Allison Pugh then joins, diving right into the recent mass proliferation of Artificial Intelligence across industries, and the dangerous encroachment it has initiated on what Pugh has dubbed “Connective Labor” – occupations where the literal act of a human seeing another human for who they are is the underlying engine for the valued outcome for the consumer, be it education, healthcare, hairdressers, sales, securities, and on – pushing society, with help from growing feelings of alienation, into a depersonalization crisis. After briefly expanding on the extension of this intrusion of AI into necessarily interpersonal roles, Professor Pugh looks at how the AI takeover over this work has been driven by this “Moneyball”-esque, Venture Capitalist, industrial-model of efficiency stripping back entire professions to emphasize data collection and output over the actual labor (and human connection) at hand, often resulting in the full-scale degradation of these jobs. Allison and Emma also touch on the AI industry’s insistence on selling you their product as a replacement for either a more practical social alternative, human labor, or human connection, before wrapping up the interview with the overwhelming issue of Big Tech’s complete capture of our information networks, be they communications platforms, databases, or (now) academia, and what it will take to push humanity back to doing their own critical thinking. Zachary Foster and Emma then jump right into Trump’s recent declaration of intent to ethnically cleanse Gaza under U.S. control while sitting beside Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu, touching on the stunning revelation of the White House’s seeming internal numbers on the total Gazan death count (around 500k) as well as the ongoing struggle to survive outside of conflict in Gaza. Next, Foster dives into the extensive role Saudi Arabia plays in pushing back against the US-Israeli imperial advancements, with their outward insistence on Palestinian statehood somewhat conflicted by Crown Prince MBS’ extensive efforts to normalize relations with Israel as well as to launch Saudi Arabia into an era of “techno-utopianism,” two agendas perfectly-aligned with the Trump Administration, before touching on the stunning international solidarity being shown on behalf of Palestine in the wake of Trump breaking from Biden’s tact of *silently* supporting the ethnic cleansing. Wrapping up, Zachary looks to Israel’s ongoing military pivot to escalating violence in the West Bank, and why U.S. and international pressure has been the only thing that ever restrained the Zionist state’s repeated attempts to ethnically cleanse Palestine.
And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Brandon Sutton and Matt Binder as they highlight a killer dissection of the Big Tech Oligarchy’s dream for “Network State” by Joanna of Blonde Politics and dive deep into Big Tech’s aggrievement- and power-driven evolution in the public eye. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on Trump’s call for the ethnic cleansing of Gaza, Saudi Arabia’s rejection of Israeli normalization without a Palestinian state, the Trump-Musk gutting of the administrative state, Trump’s Executive Order to stop recognizing trans athletes under Title IX, the first (likely illegal) deportations to Guantanamo, the confirmation of Pam Bondi, the confirmation hearings for RFK and Russ Vought, and Mike Johnson’s budget, before diving into Musk’s enshittification of the government and expanding on Donald Trump’s recent declaration of intent to fully ethnically cleanse Gaza alongside Bibi Netanyahu. David Dayen then joins, briefly touching on the relatively rapid rise of Elon Musk to the top of Trump’s advisor team, not even endorsing him for President until mid-July yet spearheading his assault on the administrative state beginning on Day 1 of his Presidency, also touching on the lack of a true antecedent for his role in US politics before expanding on his first major project for Trump, the complete shutdown of USAID. Higgins explores how both of these journalists got their start as heavy critics of the Bush Administration, with Glenn playing a particularly important role in exposing their major abuses of the national security state, before the arrival of Obama in office seemingly began a slow shift away from the liberal media institutions they had been working hand-in-hand with – be they independent or mainstream – with Higgins importantly noting how their rhetorical disposition to the mainstream organizations (be they MSNBC or Fox News) was seemingly deeply tied to… how often they were invited on the show. After walking Sam and Emma through the ultimate departure of these two from the left with the mainstream liberal embrace of Russiagate and #MeToo, Eoin dives into their ultimate arrival in the media niche among the growing independent social media outlets, like Substack and Patreon, where they could publish work and cultivate a following outside of the mediasphere they’d felt so rejected by, with Big Tech backers like Marc Andreessen playing an important role in helping them thrive there, while also actively disrupting the mainstream media industry that was so keen on critiquing them. Wrapping up the interview, Eoin touches on the role Taibbi played in Elon Musk’s Twitter files, and what Big Tech’s successful media disruption can tell us about their ultimate goals for the US government.

Happy Monday! Teresa Romero then joins, as she and Emma dive right into the recent threats mailed to various United Farm Workers locations over Trump’s incoming wave of deportations, exploring how, over less than two weeks, immigrants – regardless of citizenship – have been overtaken by an environment of fear and insecurity over their (and their family’s and community’s) safety, with no institution – from school to church to work – safe from ICE’s indiscriminate raids. Expanding on this, Romero unpacks the central role undocumented people play in the US farming industry, and the overwhelming exploitation and abuse they face without institutional backing from unions (or, in theory, the government), with growers and employers – despite their obvious reliance on the labor of undocumented folks – eager to take advantage of the increasing insecurity as Trump’s reforms come into practice, before they wrap up the free half by unpacking the need to create a genuine path to citizenship for farm workers whose presence is so important to our country.

Then, she's joined by Hanno Hauenstein, independent journalist based in Berlin, to discuss the upcoming German elections and Elon Musk's increasing influence on German politics. First, Emma runs through updates on the Senates’ confirmations of Pete Hegseth and Kristi Noam, Trump’s firing of watchdogs, escalating immigration raids and their impact on Indigenous communities, ICE quotas, Colombia’s rejection of a US deportation plane on humanitarian grounds (and Trump’s response), the return of Palestinians to northern Gaza amid Trump’s musings on fully ethnically cleansing the region, Trump’s anti-abortion measures, the plunge of the AI stock market, LA’s skyrocketing rent, and more, also unpacking Trump’s hopeful discussion of completing the ethnic cleansing of Gaza. Ståle Holgersen then joins, briefly touching on the pervasion and perversion of the term “crisis” in contemporary political rhetoric before parsing through the elements that do bring these overwhelming emergencies to the level of “crisis” – namely, that it’s a transient event embedded in underlying sociopolitical structures, with ultimately negative consequences for humans and/or nature – and what makes distinguishing these “crisis” from broader catastrophes so valuable in understanding how they are created by and are used to reinforce the capitalist system we live under. Expanding on this, Holgersen explores how capitalism has been able to adapt to the myriad crises it has created over the last few centuries, often finding ways to push solutions that affirm our commitment to capitalist systems, and the utter dearth of a true left alternative in those moments, positing the need for current leftist movements to establish a blueprint (much like capital has) for responding to crisis and presenting clear solutions in opposition to the far-right and centrist options backed by capital. Hanno Hauenstein then joins as he unpacks the rapid evolution of AfD from a standard Euroskeptic party to a staunchly nationalist and nativist one, capitalizing on long-standing distrust of German political institutions and economic anxiety post-reunification. Hauenstein and Emma then explore the stunning lack of opposition amid the rise of a rampantly xenophobic and racist political party, with the political establishment in Germany largely accommodating their anti-migrant talking points, despite their constant flirting with Holocaust denial and full-on Nazism. Wrapping up, they unpack the particular role Elon Musk has played in backing AfD’s rise to prevalence in German politics, as well as the role of Germany’s unconditional support for Israel in further legitimizing AfD’s hopes of a far-right regime and undermining their strongest opposition.

Nayna Gupta then joins as she and Emma unpack the immediate impact of Trump’s devastating attacks on the US immigration system, including the despair among migrants already hindered by the Biden Administration’s legally- and morally-dubious attempts to undermine the asylum system as their final (legal) path into the country – via the CBP One app process – is shut down. It's News Day Tuesday! Sam and Emma speak with Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-WA-07) to discuss what to expect from the upcoming Trump administration's immigration agenda, and how the Republican-controlled Congress might govern. First, Sam and Emma check in on Pete Hegseth's confirmation hearing for Defense Secretary, with Virginia Sen. Tim Kaine putting the screws to him on the allegations against Hegseth regarding numerous instances of infidelity and sexual misconduct (to say nothing of the financial mismanagement!) Then, they speak with Rep. Jayapal, first discussing her role on the Judiciary Committee as ranking member of the immigration subcommittee, her thoughts on the Laken Riley Act that is making its way through the Senate, and what to expect from the incoming Trump administration when it comes to mass deportation efforts. She then discusses what to expect from the Congressional Progressive Caucus now that she is no longer chair (she is chair emerita however!) under Rep. Greg Casar's stewardship, and where Democrats can go in terms of messaging to have more success then they did in November's elections.

Happy Monday! Sam and Emma speak with Richard Seymour, writer & commentator based in London, to discuss his recent book Disaster Nationalism: The Downfall of Liberal Civilization. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on the still-burning LA Fires, the GOP’s tie of California aid to Trump’s debt ceiling raise, the second Trump Administration, the Laken Riley Act, the TikTok ban, Jack Smith’s resignation, and Biden’s immigration move, before touching on the Democratic Party’s continuing inability to act like an opposition party with just seven days to Trump’s inauguration, and watching GOP Senator John Barrasso put the right’s inhumanity on full display over the ongoing devastation in California. Richard Seymore then joins, diving right into his idea of “Disaster Nationalism” as a type of proto-fascism that seeks to take the ever-increasing frequency of real-world disasters with often abstract causes (climate change, inequality, etc) and tie them to singular, concrete perpetrators, frequently represented by ethnic and political minorities, tackling examples out of Oregon in the wake of the 2020 wildfires and Gujarat following the 2002 train burning – with the latter providing a particularly gruesome lens into Disaster Nationalism’s emphasis on extreme ethnic violence as a key selling point, as it provides an outlet for pent-up anxiety rather than a solution to its real causes. After expanding on Disaster Nationalism’s complex relationship to democracy (as a tool) and dedication to capitalism, Seymore walks Sam and Emma through the centrally motivating role of economic anxiety in this equation, tackling its distinction to general economic deprivation in its emphasis on loss and social status, looking at how the hyper-individualism of neoliberalism exacerbates socio-economic inequality while blaming those on the losing end for their situation, cultivating a sadistic culture of pseudo-meritocracy that craves social distinction, something threatened by any attempt to deconstruct the dominant hierarchies. After touching on the particular display of Disaster Nationalism developing in Israel’s ongoing genocide of Gaza, Richard, Sam, and Emma then look at the role of the left in combatting these pressures, tackling the history of trade unions in leading the fight against fascism, and the importance of organizing when it comes to finding agency, empowerment, and community in the face of systems that want you to have anything but.
And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma watch Hasan Piker’s pressing interviews with LA’s incarcerated firefighters, Newsmax’s Rob Finnerty pins the fires on the donkey (Dems… and DEI), and Leninade unpacks the unfounded argument that any city could’ve contained the climate devastation facing LA right now. Ronald Raygun explores how the criminal justice and immigration systems work together (and against each other) to make this world worse for immigrants (particularly with the incoming Laken Riley Act), Alex from New York discusses climate change and California, and Joe Rogan continues his work as butler to the billionaires as he brings on Zuckerberg to platform his agenda (and his aggrievement), plus, your calls and IMs!

First, Sam and Emma run through updates on Trump’s felon status, California’s wildfire crisis, the growing global climate crisis, Meta’s new speech regulations, Gaza’s still-growing death toll and the likely extent of its undercount, the House’s bill to sanction the ICC, the Senate’s bill to deport unconvicted migrants, the death of Anita Bryant, the death of the Chevron Doctrine, and TikTok’s case at the Supreme Court, before diving a little deeper into the unparalleled dangers of climate change as seen in the wildfires rampaging around LA. Osita Nwanevu then joins, jumping right into the late developments of Trump’s myriad legal woes over this last year, and the overwhelming feeling that our next president will be completely unaccountable while feeling completely untouchable, also touching on the genuine recognition of Trump as a problematic felon by the public, and why that simply didn’t matter when it came to their open-faced rejection of the Democratic Party’s institutionalist centrism. Expanding on this latter element, Nwanevu, Sam, and Emma walk through the Democrats’ inability to act as a capable opposition party, never presenting any semblance of an alternative when it comes to rhetoric and policy around the GOP’s key issues (immigration) or their own (healthcare), and often preferring to jump on board with the right in the hopes that it will legitimize their role in politics. Dissecting even deeper, Osita explores the dearth of any party identity around vague institutionalist careerism, failing to manifest any changes to their image in the decade since Trump’s threat arose, and often refusing to fund any wings of the party that challenge its floundering status quo, before shifting to the importance of the world of labor in pushing for that alternative image of progressivism, with unions – the core of labor – providing political education, communication, and socialization for their workers, with the institutional power to push political parties around. Wrapping up, Nwanevu explores the importance of revitalizing spaces for building and exerting worker power, be they unions or other forms of democratized workplace, and how we can help make that happen.
