Mishlei 15:28 - The Utterances of the Tzadik and Rasha (Part 2)
Length: 44 minutes
Synopsis: This morning (5/22/25), in our morning Mishlei shiur, we began by examining a "hot take" translation of our pasuk, which we ended up rejecting. After reviewing the questions and approaches from yesterday, we delved into the meforshim, taking up questions of methodology along the way. Although we didn't FULLY develop any of the new approaches, we discussed them enough to find practical takeaways.

Mishlei 15:28 - The Utterances of the Tzadik and Rasha (Part 1)
Length: 47 minutes
Synopsis: This morning (5/21/25), in our morning Mishlei shiur, we learned a pasuk that I've never learned before! We spent a longer-than-usual time trying to pin down the most accurate translation, especially on account of the differences between the Masoretic text and another tradition (reflected in the Targum, Septuagint, and Syriac texts). After raising our usual amount of questions, we spent the rest of the time developing our own theories. Tomorrow, we'll see what the meforshim have to say!

Mishlei 16:33 - Does Hashem Determine Who Wins the Lottery?
Length: 1 hour 18 minutes
Synopsis: This evening (5/19/25), in the last Monday Night Mishlei shiur of the 2024-2025 season, we concluded the 16th perek of Mishlei with a whopper of a pasuk! I was glad to see that I wasn't the only one who was bothered by the anomalous and theologically difficult nature of the statement. We came up with more questions than I anticipated, and more ideas as well. After sharing my own approach which I supported with the Rambam and the GRA, we learned Rabbeinu Yonah's context-based approach, then called it a night. This was a great year of Mishlei learning, and I look forward to resuming towards the beginning of the 2025-2026 school year (בג"ה).

Length: 45 minutes
Synopsis: This morning (5/15/25), in our morning Mishlei shiur, we began with an addendum to our translation of yesterday's pasuk. We then reviewed the approaches we took yesterday, learning through similar explanations in the meforshim. I then shared the approach of my rebbi, Rabbi Moskowitz zt"l, based on Rashi. We concluded by raising a question on the approach taken by the majority of the meforshim, but were happily sidetracked by my favorite Rambam in Sefer Zera'im. If you have other thoughts on this fruitful pasuk, please let me know!

Length: 46 minutes
Synopsis: This morning (5/14/25), in our morning Mishlei shiur, we began learning a famous pasuk. (Well, the second half, anyway.) Not only that, but I'd bet money on the fact that this pasuk applies to current events involving POTUS. We spent a good deal of time raising over a dozen questions on our pasuk, then developed a few nice approaches. Tomorrow, we'll see what the meforshim have to say (בג"ה).

Mishlei 16:32 - Better Than Strength and the Capture of Cities
Length: 1 hour 18 minutes
Synopsis: This evening (5/12/25), in our Monday Night Mishlei shiur, we learned a pasuk I have taught many times because it so perfectly embodies Mishlei's fundamental approach to mussar and ethical development. We set out to see if we could find NEW ideas, and we did, but I ended up going over Rabbeinu Yonah's idea just the same. If you'd like to understand why Mishlei is so successful OR if you've ever struggled with anger and vengeance, then this is a pasuk for you.

Mishlei 15:26 - Abominably Evil Thoughts and Purely Pleasant Statements (Part 2)
Length: 46 minutes
Synopsis: This morning (5/8/25), in our morning Mishlei shiur, we continued analyzing yesterday's pasuk. Our main focus was on the Malbim's creative read, which led us into a topic in this week's parashah: "Do not hate your brother in your heart" (Vayikra 19:17). After discussing the halachos and applications, as codified by the Rambam, we returned to our pasuk and learned the commentary of two Geronans: Rabbeinu Yonah and Rabbeinu Sheishes ben Yitzchak. Another great haul!

Mishlei 15:25 - Haughty Houses and Helpless Widows (Part 2)
Length: 45 minutes
Synopsis: This morning (5/1/25), in our morning Mishlei shiur, we began by reviewing what we covered yesterday, with some new facts, observations, and insights sprinkled in. After an attempt at a new original interpretation, we turned to the meforshim: first, Metzudas David, then Rabbeinu Yonah, and then the Meiri's derech nistar (which we didn't have time to analyze). Although we got a nice new idea from Rabbeinu Yonah, I think what we came up with yesterday was the ikkar. Great pasuk all around!

Mishlei 15:25 - Haughty Houses and Helpless Widows (Part 1)
Length: 44 minutes
Synopsis: This morning (4/30/25), in our morning Mishlei shiur, we returned to chapter 15 after nearly a month's break! Of the many questions we raised on this morning's pasuk, the main ones had to do with the incongruity and the mechanics. We developed some really nice approaches which we fleshed out with real-world examples, and picked up on some nice methodology along the way. Tomorrow (בג"ה) we'll delve into the meforshim.

Mishlei 16:30 - Pursed Lips Sink Ships
Length: 1 hour 24 minutes
Synopsis: This evening (4/28/25), we returned to our Monday Night Mishlei shiur with a small but strong crew! The pasuk had some strange words, but we came up with several nice (and integrated!) approaches on our own, then learned two juicy ideas from the meforshim. If you ever face people who plot even OR if you have some not-so-wholesome thoughts yourself, then this pasuk is for you!

Mishlei 15:24 - The Maskil's Orach Chayim (Part 2)
Length: 47 minutes
Synopsis: This morning (4/3/25), in our morning Mishlei shiur, we reviewed the approaches from yesterday, then started learning through the meforshim. We began with Rashi (oddly enough), who didn't disappoint, then followed our usual pecking order of Metzudas David, Rabbeinu Yonah, Meiri, and R' Sheishes. We didn't get EVERYTHING, but we still learned some nice ideas and practiced some critical methodology.

Length: 43 minutes
Synopsis: This morning (4/2/25), in our morning Mishlei shiur, we began learning a new pasuk - one which is more abstract and more fraught with translation-nuance questions than any in recent memory. After attempting to ask and formulate all the questions (which was a bit more involved than usual), we came up with some nice ideas! I'm really looking forward to seeing what the meforshim say tomorrow (בג"ה).

Mishlei 16:29 - The Enticement of Violence
Length: 1 hour 38 minutes
Synopsis: This evening (3/31/24), in our Monday Night Mishlei shiur, the pasuk we learned yielded a TON of questions. Thankfully, we were able to come up with a number of different approaches, and learned a couple more from the meforshim. Despite the rather extreme subject of the pasuk, the ideas we learned ended up being relevant and practical.

Mishlei 15:23 - The Joy/Trap of Hearing Your Own Voice (Part 2)
Length: 44 minutes
Synopsis: This morning (3/27/25), in our morning Mishlei shiur, we began by reviewing yesterday's ideas, adding some examples and methodology points along the way. Then we took up the GINORMOUS Meiri, spanning our pasuk and the previous one, which included several explanations. The interpretations he gave were great, but at the end of the day, ALL the approaches to our pasuk - his and ours - boiled down to the same fundamental insight. Personally, I found that to be rather refreshing!

This week's Torah content has been sponsored anonymously. Even I don’t know who the sponsor is, but their money is going to a good cause: purchasing the new edition of the Siddur Otzar ha’Tefilos. People have asked me what the best tefilah resource is—and hands down, it’s this siddur. The only problem is that the original printing was pretty horrendous. I’ve been waiting two decades for it to be reprinted, and it finally has! Now I just need to figure out how to get a copy. Regardless, thank you to the anonymous sponsor for your contribution!-----

We defined the basic idea, then proceeded to discover application after application, on our own and in the meforshim we consulted. Will we succeed in finding a greater chidush? That remains to be seen tomorrow!

Length: 1 hour 38 minutes
Synopsis: This evening (3/24/24), in our Monday Night Mishlei shiur, we learned a VERY difficult pasuk featuring two highly specific Mishleic archetypes which don't get nearly enough coverage: the ish tahpuchos and the nirgan. The questions on the pasuk were deceptively straightforward, but when we attempted to learn it, we got several 80% explanations which we just couldn't develop into full ideas. We finally managed to bring one idea across the finish line, but it was a real work out!

Mishlei 15:22 - [Secret] Counsel and Successful Plans (Part 3)
Length: 49 minutes
Synopsis: This morning (3/19/25), in our morning Mishlei shiur, we devoted a third day to the pasuk we began last week! This was partially due to the fact that we didn't even get to the meforshim last time, and we also had a smaller crowd today. While I can't say that we arrived at any groundbreaking new peshatim, we did succeed in developing strategies for practical applications. We also learned an important derecho nistar approach from the Meiri. In other words, it was time well-spent!

Mishlei 16:27 - The Bliyaal Reexamined
Length: 1 hour 32 minutes
Synopsis: This evening (3/17/24), in our Monday Night Mishlei shiur, we revisited one of Mishlei’s lesser-known archetypes: the bliyaal. We had been working with a specific translation for the past few years but discovered a couple more tonight. To our surprise, these turned out to be more unified than they initially seemed. We developed a few ideas of our own and explored a couple more from the meforshim. More work remains to fully comprehend this elusive Mishleic character, but analyses like this advance our understanding.
