Spaska Ivanov, Assistant General Manager at Rehoboth Beach Country Club in Delaware, USA, joins me in this episode of The Modern Club Management Podcast.
This conversation focuses on navigating challenging conversations in the workplace. We discuss how to approach them, framing the conversation, the importance of setting clear expectations, and giving permission to others to have tough conversations. It was an enjoyable discussion about a topic that all managers need to be skilled at but something which we can only become more comfortable with by doing repetitions!
I hope you enjoy his episode. If you would like to ask Spaska any questions or connect with her about this topic, she has kindly offered to share her email address.

Richard is one of my favourite people in the world. It is that simple. He has taken that big leap into following your dreams and passions, and also saying enough is enough in a job that was no longer fulfilling and nourishing, and that is inspirational.
In this wide ranging conversation we dive into a myriad of topics from the joys of sabbaticals, meditation, writing, golf in general and much more. Our conversations tend to be tangential and that is one of the joys of spending time with Richard.
Please enjoy this conversation and definitely also click the links below. His book is a wonderful read, as is his blog. They transport us back to being a child and reminds me of my passion for this game that has taken me on life's journey.

Re-broadcast! Going all the way back to the beginning we bring you some of my favourite conversations from The Modern Club Management podcast.
Today I am speaking with Emily Davidson. Emily is the Participation and Inclusion Manager at Golf New Zealand, an organisation she has worked for since 2017. Her biggest career highlight to date was Golf NZ winning the NZ Sport and Recreation Award for Leadership in Diversity and Sport for 2022. Not being a golfer herself when she joined Golf NZ, Emily was able to bring a fresh perspective and ask the crucial disrupter questions against the doctrine of 'this is just the way we do it in golf'.
This was a super interesting conversation which helped to broaden my thinking around some of the challenges facing different groups when it comes to golf. I had some great takeaways of simple things that can be done to improve the user friendliness of our website, clubhouse, and some longer time/bigger project ideas also. If you have any level of diversity within your membership then I recommend taking a listen.
Thoughts and reflections
Beginners having to wear full golfing attire can be a big barrier to entry. Cost is an obvious one but also imposter syndrome being created of the "all the gear, no idea" mentality and being embarrassed dressing like a golfer but not being able to play.Etiquette can come later when it's needed. Don't start off with all of these rules. It doesn't come across as welcoming to the sport. What can we do to change the image perception of golf? Why is a shirt with a collar automatically smart and a shirt without one not?Tradition and history of the game isn't a good enough reason for current dress codes, why? Because if it was, men would still be wearing plus fours and women long floaty dresses!Don't assume everyone knows where they need to go or report to when they arrive. Re-broadcast! Going all the way back to the beginning we bring you some of my favourite conversations from The Modern Club Management podcast. Watch out for some new episodes coming soon.
In today's episode I speak with Monique Landman, the Chief Empathy Officer and Co-founder of Unchain. After a successful corporate career in strategy and communications, Monique found her heart eight years ago and a new calling in life to bring empathetic leadership to the world so that people can lead with more humanity. It has never been more important than now to have empathy and compassion as a leader. With the anxiety and uncertainty of Covid, burnout among employees, and a loneliness epidemic in many countries now is the time to stand up as a leader and face these tough situations with compassion and an understanding of how to do so.
After tuning in to a CMAE Friday Forum with Monique I was immediately interested in having her as a guest. And one of the questions by a club manager at the end in particular made me think this is an important conversation to have. How do we deal with emotion, burnout, anxiety in the work place? How should leaders approach this with their staff? Is there a wrong and right way? If you care about your team and want help with these tough conversations then take a listen.
I loved having this conversation with Monique and I hope you enjoy it also and have some actionable tools to use next time you find a colleague, or friend, who's having a rough time.

Today I am excited to be joined by global luxury hospitality leader Etienne Haro (LinkedIn). Etienne is the Hotel Manager of La Mamounia in Marrakesh. Prior to this Etienne’s roles have been across a who’s who of luxury hotel brands. He was the Executive Assistant Manager at the world famous Burj Al Arab, Director of Food & Beverage at Fairmont Hotels in Dubai and Kiev, for Hyatt in their Asia Pacific Divisional Office. These roles followed six years in Dubai leading the food and beverage operation at a number of InterContinental Hotels. And while doing all this Etienne has even found time to complete an MBA from the prestigious EHL Hospitality Business School.
Etienne talks about what made him switch from a planned career in ... to hospitality, what drew him to a life of service in hospitality and puts a smile on his face. We discuss talent equity and balancing the workload across all employees; not overloading your superstars. Etienne describes the importance of alignment with your operation, the power and importance of storytelling, taking control over all the facets that deliver on amazing guest experiences, and the non-obvious things he would look at in a F&B operation to move the level up, plus much more. This was one of my favourite conversations and one that I personally took copious amounts of notes on after re-listening a few times!

In today's episode I am rejoined by Monique Landman, the Chief Empathy Officer and Co-founder of Unchain. After a successful corporate career in strategy and communications, Monique found her heart eight years ago and a new calling in life to bring empathetic leadership to the world so that people can lead with more humanity. It has never been more important than now to have empathy and compassion as a leader.
In this episode we discuss amygdala hijacking, how to handle this in others and how to notice it in yourself. This may help you handle those difficult interactions with have. What or who is a cynic? Are they actually the most passionate supporters of your club? And how we get them on our side and channel their passion?
I took a lot from this conversation and gave me plenty to reflect in both myself and the interactions I have.

Today I am speaking with Phoebe Torrance. Phoebe is the Women's Golf and Development Manager at The Metropolitan Golf Club in Melbourne, Australia.
This was a super interesting conversation which gave me some ideas of tactics to implement to make golf clubs more inclusive and welcoming to get more women into golf. It can be a tricky proposition running coaching programmes to bring new members into private members clubs but Phoebe has done a fantastic job and there are lots of ideas that can help clubs attract a more diverse group of members to join their clubs.
Thoughts and reflections
Golf clubs are intimidating places for people to arrive at for the first time. Clear signage and great instructions are very important to make people feel comfortable and welcome. Can coaching programmes act as a "trial" for membership for people who are unsure on being able to commit the financial sums required to join great golf clubs. This can be a difficult decision to make when you are new to the game and have other life commitments.Have a single point of contact that participants can reach out to with questions. This episode is brought to you by Suada. Today I am speaking with Kari Haug, http://karihaug.com/. Kari is the owner and lead golf course architect at Kari Howg Planning & Design, Inc., a golf course architecture company that focuses on sustainable and eco-sensitive golf course design. Kari is a member of the European Institute of Golf Course Architects (EIGCA), and one of the very few female golf course architects in the world. She is committed to eco-sensitive and sustainable golf course design, and the improvement of course playability for women and seniors. A competitive amateur and former collegiate golfer, Kari is able to envision sound golf strategy from tee to green. Using CAD technology and other design rendering techniques, Kari is able to make drafted designs come to life for a memorable golf experience.
I'm excited to have Kari join me for a discussion around her sustainability model and Playable Pathways, to see how we can make golf courses more enjoyable for female golfers, and slower swing speed golfers in general, to play which is a crucial part of engaging them and keeping them as active golfers.
3 Things to think about while you listen
Are the holes on your course friendly for the slower speed golfers while still providing a challenge to the high speed players? What are some simple changes you can make to tee locations to make certain holes easier? Is your entire greens or course committee made up of low handicap male golfers? Welcome to Season 2 of the Modern Club Management Podcast. This season's theme is all around diversity in clubs. We'll be speaking with a diverse group of people from within the industry about their experiences, what we as an industry can do better to encourage diversity, how we can design golf courses to be more inclusive, why diversity of thought is so powerful, and much more. I hope you enjoy these conversations as much as I did. Listen to these with an open mind and be willing to have your current approach and thinking challenged.
We start off season 2 with Jules Murray. Jules started her career in sales and business development before moving into training and consultancy. In 2006 Jules founded Spider on the Wall Ltd which offers managerial training, soft skills, and mystery shopping services. A regular on the CMAE MDP as a presenter, Jules is well known and liked within the club community and brings a contagious energy to all of her sessions. Her passion lies in designing and delivering fun, interactive and experiential training courses; which having had the good fortune in being in some of her sessions she definitely delivers this in spades.
