Episode 4: Becoming an Imperfect Advocate
Check out my book at https://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/the-imperfect-advocate-d-w/1144444132
In this episode I share why I wrote a book. I share more details of my personal history involving dispute resolution within the special education system in Georgia, USA. It provided me with a wealth of experiences, insights, and challenges. I utilized this background knowledge to write my book, "The Imperfect Advocate".
I share my IEE request letter and ultimately the IEP revocation letter that lead up to the final withdrawal from public school education all together.
Find more information on IEP and IEE at: https://adayinourshoes.com/iee-independent-education-evaluation/
I want to share my experience to help parents understand that if they are currently in the public school and special education battle, they're not alone. I have been there too. There is light at the end of the tunnel.
My hope is that season 2 will help people realize and empathize with other homeschool families like myself. Parents should work together to facilitate change and fight for all education to improve to work for the families that the tax dollars are from.

Please join me in welcoming back to the show⊠Mr. Neuroaffirming Parent!
Heâs joining me on this Holiday Special to talk about our favorite memories of our past holiday celebrations, how we individually handled holiday stress, how weâve handled it together as a couple, and how we handle holidays today as parents!
We want to remind our listeners that Neurodiversity simply means valuing and celebrating the diversity of neurological differences of human brains.
Examples are maybe yourself, your friends, or family members have the neurotype of ADHD, autism, dyslexia, giftedness, dyspraxia, epilepsy, anxiety, depression, trauma, or any other brain wiring difference.
As neuroaffirming parents, we understand the importance of embracing these differences in our own family. We hope this conversation helps you better understand neurodivergence in your own family.
---
We hope you found these tips on handling the winter holidays in a neurodiversity-affirming way helpful. Remember, the key is to celebrate your child's uniqueness and make the season enjoyable for your whole family.
Remember, every human is unique, and the strategies that work best for one human may differ for another. Be willing to adapt and evolve your approach as you learn more about neurodiversity and the needs and strengths of all humans. Incorporating neurodiversity affirming practices is an ongoing journey of learning, empathy, and growth.
The Neuroaffirming Parent will be taking time off for the holidays, but look back in January for news about a potential season 2!
Happy holidays to all who celebrate!

This was prerecorded - I debated on posting it because I didn't know if I would keep this podcast going or not!
I know a lot of listeners signed up to hear a interview style podcast, but I'm not sure if it's sustainable for me.
However, I can say that a solo podcast style is something I am able to do.
It all depends on your support!

Giftedness is a neurotype. Gifted individuals demonstrate exceptional abilities in areas like intellectual, creative, artistic, and leadership skills. Just as neurodiversity recognizes diverse cognitive profiles, giftedness highlights the unique strengths and talents that individuals possess. Gifted individuals have distinct cognitive needs and ways of processing information. While gifted education aims to provide tailored opportunities for advanced learners, it's not without its challenges. We'll discuss how gifted education can sometimes overlook the unique social and emotional needs of gifted individuals. However, when done right, it can foster growth, curiosity, and a love for learning. Navigating the intersection of giftedness and neurodiversity requires a nuanced approach. It's crucial to recognize that gifted individuals can also have neurodivergent traits, such as ADHD or sensory sensitivities. This intersectionality can greatly influence their learning experiences.

One key aspect of advocating for neurodiversity-affirming practices is rejecting harmful approaches like behaviorism and functioning labels. Behaviorism reduces individuals to a set of behaviors to be modified, often neglecting the underlying needs and experiences of neurodivergent people.
Instead of relying on behaviorism, we should focus on evidence-based practices rooted in neuroscience. These approaches are built on a foundation of understanding how the brain functions and how neurodivergent individuals can thrive. This means looking at interventions and therapies that are backed by scientific research.
We should draw inspiration from adult autistic rights activists like Jim Sinclair. Their advocacy has been instrumental in promoting acceptance, understanding, and support for autistic individuals. It's a reminder that the voices and perspectives of neurodivergent adults are invaluable in shaping our parenting and educational practices.
What does it look like to practice neurodiversity-affirming parenting? It starts with recognizing and respecting your child's unique neurocognitive profile. It means creating an environment that supports their individual needs, interests, and strengths.
The principles of neurodiversity should also extend into the educational, medical, and all other systems of society.
