  • The vagus nerve is arguably the most important nerve in our entire body. And the nerve that holds the most power over our digestive system, our heart, our breath and our thoughts.

In this episode, I explain some of the functions of the vagus nerve, why it's important we support vagal tone and what you can do at home to help your nervous system function.

This episode is a brief rundown of the vagus nerve - there is so much more information that I could have provided in this episode, which will likely mean I'll be doing a follow up episode one day soon!

I briefly describe what to look for in your child, should they be showing symptoms of an illness, and when to seek medical attention.

Don't hesitate to receive care after an injury or accident. Healthcare providers can help make a world of difference in your recovery.

Don't forget! Just because there was no damage to your car, doesn’t mean there is no damage to you. How your car absorbs shock and force is not an indication of how you do. Make sure you head right to the hospital after getting into an accident. Or see your family doctor.

  • Have you ever had a shoulder that just wouldn’t move? There could be a number of reasons why! But today I’m talking about ‘Frozen Shoulder.’

Adhesive capsulitis is very often described as frozen shoulder. It shows up clinically when someone has pain in their shoulder that gets worse over time. The reason frozen shoulder is term you may have heard before is because it takes a long time for someone to recover from this and normally they are unable to move their arm. Adhesive capsulitis is where the shoulder capsule adheres to the head of the humerous. Often it’s considered idiopathic in the medical world, meaning it just arises spontaneously, or it is due to a secondary condition like autoimmune or endocrine disorders.

  • Very often misdiagnosed, and misguided, this condition is specifically due to an overuse and repetitive strain style injury in the wrist, and specifically affecting the median nerve through the carpal tunnel. The main cause of carpal tunnel syndrome or median nerve compression, is repetitive motions over a long period of time. People who work at a desk, on a computer, people who work with electronics, in a factory doing repetitive movements even massage therapists. As well, when stress is associated with these movements, so if you’re working and highly stressed, or consistently stressed, your chances of developing a receptive strain injury increase.

  • The Chinese Body Clock is used by practitioners as an assessment tool to see where disease or dysfunction might be present. The basis of this clock is that it reflects the times at which each of our organs is functioning at its peak, so that we might be able to understand more about how to support our bodies, but also how to recognize patterns of dysfunction. It helps us understand how we can optimize our day to support our organs, rest when we need to and recover well.

  • Nicole gives a quick dose of anatomy, technique and treatment when it comes to craniosacral therapy and how everything is once again, completely interconnected.

    Health Topic: Cranial Osteopathy

Tips from an Osteopathic Perspective: From an osteopathic perspective, every cranium is very unique. Trauma, lifestyle, physiology, pathology and genetics all play important roles in the asymmetries that impact the cranial and cranial rhythm. Any dysfunction or variation in our sacral region will cause a mirroring affect in our cranium as well. Another example of how our body is all connected and how one aspect or structure of our body is connected to the other.

  • Today I am using this space to talk about the relationship between our jaw and our hips. How could these structures possibly be connected and why is that even important?

Health Topic: The Link Between the TMJ and our hip bones

Tips from an Osteopathic Perspective: Be conscious of clenching your jaw, choose to do self massage techniques in your temporal regions, deep hip stretches and cat/cow postures can help. Be conscious of posture while seated, and use a pillow in between legs at night.

    THE TAKE AWAY:

Think of how you can be the most aligned, most balanced and most gentle in your body right now. There are many reasons why we might have jaw or hip pain, but sometimes dealing with chronic pain requires us to go deep, look at patterns and not be stuck in a diagnostic box.

  • Health Topic: Lyme disease

What is it?: A bacterial infection caused by black-legged ticks

Symptoms: Symptoms can be varied and complex and include physical and cognitive issues

Causes and Risk Factors: Black legged tick

Diagnosis and Treatment: Antibiotics and treating symptoms

Tips from an Osteopathic Perspective: As a manual osteopath, I am going to help address somatic dysfunctions, including cognitive function and the nervous system. I would constantly be asking questions about my patient’s symptoms and any change in symptoms and I would help them come to terms with Lyme disease mentally. As practitioners, we owe it to our patients to always sit in the learners seat. There are no experts on lyme, but lyme literate professionals that are constantly learning about this disease. Consider false negatives, and addressing lyme based on certain symptoms even if tests are negative. This can help outcomes.

    THE TAKE AWAY:

I guess my question is, instead of fearing lyme and ticks, how can we be symbiotic with nature, to co-exist, and to protect ourselves, and the environment, in the meantime?

  • Health Topic: Endometriosis

What is it?: Endometrial glands and cells appear outside of the uterine cavity, where they are supposed to live and stay. The most common locations for these ectopic (meaning an abnormal place or position) groupings are in the ovaries, the area between the uterus and the rectum and the uterosacral ligament.

Symptoms: While an important proportion of women with this condition may be asymptomatic, patients with endometriosis often manifest severe dysmenorrhea, chronic pelvic pain not associated with a menstrual cycle, dysfunctional uterine bleeding, infertility, painful defecation during menstruation, urinary tract symptoms, and gastrointestinal symptoms.

Causes and Risk Factors: Still widely unknown, but genetics, environment, lifestyle and menstrual retrograde can all play a role.

Diagnosis and Treatment: There is still no effective treatment for endometriosis but there are pharmacological and surgical interventions.

Tips from an Osteopathic Perspective: From a manual osteopaths perspective, we treat somatic dysfunction, or impaired or altered functions of the nervous, lymphatic and musculoskeletal system. So we will treat every patient with their unique and individual symptoms. If you come in with back pain, we will help address your concerns. If you are experiencing bloating, we make sure to do a full visceral and mechanical assessment for you.

    THE TAKE AWAY:

If you are experiencing reproductive health issues, or suspect something isn’t functioning right, don’t hesitate to talk to your doctor. Our menstrual cycle is a tool for us to understand our bodies and each aspect of it is a reflection of the state of our internal health. Especially if you are experiencing an unusual amount of pain, bloating, heaviness, irregularities and bleeding. As well, seeking complimentary healthcare providers that understand gynecological concerns is important.

  • Dysmenorrhea is a common condition associated with painful cramping in the uterus. 75% of people who menstruate experience painful periods. There are two types- Primary Dysmenorrhea is a condition where periods are painful but not linked to other gynecological concerns, and normally start right at the beginning of menses. Secondary Dysmenorrhea is the presence of pelvic inflammatory disease, endometriosis or another reproductive health issue and would have me considering a differential diagnosis.

Dysmenorrhea is caused by an increased amount of prostaglandins in our menstrual fluid. When tissue is damaged or infected, prostaglandins are the hormones that cause a reaction like pain, inflammation and fever. Normally, this would spark a healing process in the body, but during menstruation, it sparks a constant feedback loop of pain.

Health Topic: Dysmenorrhea / Painful Periods

What is it?: Primary dysmenorrhea is the presence of painful cramping during menstruation with no other obvious underlying health concerns. Secondary dysmenorrhea is the presence of painful cramping but with the presence of other reproductive health issues.

Symptoms: Painful cramping, nausea, headaches, dizziness, mental distress, muscle cramping etc.

Causes and Risk Factors: Having female reproductive organs, stress, prevalence of prostaglandins in menstrual fluid.

Diagnosis and Treatment: Often diagnosed by a medical doctor. Conventional treatment would include pain killers and hormonal contraceptive pills. Manual therapy, visceral manipulation, stress reduction and manual therapy techniques.

    Tips from an Osteopathic Perspective:

With the use of osteopathic manual techniques and by adopting its principles into my approach, I am able to reduce overall pain and discomfort during menstruation. You do not need to suffer in pain every month due to your gynecological conditions. Visceral manual therapy can be an effective and gentle way to help improve the structure and function of your pelvic organs.

    THE TAKE AWAY:

There are massive gaps in our healthcare system. When people presenting with female reproductive organs try to discuss their health concerns with their medical doctors, they are often gaslit or passed onto some specialist who also has no idea how to manage or treat their concerns. We are left feeling ill, confused and hopeless. I can count on two hands the number of different gynecologists this 33 has seen in her life, with no help or positive outcomes. I am grateful that manual therapy provides options for people who are struggling with pain.

  • With so many people working from home, the increase in screen and phone time and our disturbances in sleep, I’ve been receiving inquiries on differential diagnoses for headaches.

Many headaches can be hard to diagnose and treat. Manual osteopaths perform a full neurological exam and closely examine the neck as well. We use a pain guide that can help differentiate certain headaches, create an effective treatment for our patients and notice red flags and the need to seek medical attention.

    Health Topic: Headaches

What is it?: There are many types of headaches. The most common are tension and vascular (migraines) headaches.

Symptoms: Tension headache symptoms can pose as pain in the neck, head and face, eye disturbances, immobility and sensitivity. Vascular headaches can be unilateral, stabbing and intense pain, have an aura associated with it, dread and dissociation and digestive upset.

Diagnosis and Treatment: Manual osteopaths use a pain protocol, health history and palpation to help determine how to properly treat your headache.

    Tips from an Osteopathic Perspective:

If you suffer from chronic headaches I would generally recommend stress reduction techniques such as meditation and massage therapy treatments. Our lymphatic system also needs support during this time, so facial massage and downward dog can be helpful. I would recommend time in nature and deep breathing, and changes in nutrient intake and hydration. I would not recommend high intensity activity and extra screen time. More specifically, a physical exam will tell us what specific muscles and joints are affected and guide us to offering proper home care and treatment.

If you have a sudden onset of a painful headache, seek medical attention.

  • Grieving is a stressful psychological and physical event. Feeling grief causes inflammation in the body, which can increase blood pressure and put us at risks for blood clots. When we experience grief, we are more vulnerable to viral and bacterial infection. From an osteopathic perspective, it is no surprise that we are currently experiencing a pandemic that is centered around, and weakens, our lungs and blood vessels. This is exactly where grief lies in our bodies.

Learn about the two energetic disturbances that an experience like grief can cause and how our energy is affected by it. Energy is our life force that is unseen, unheard and untouched. It is the vitality and spark within us that allows us to function on a physical level and process on an intuitive level. Our energy is affected by what we think, feel, hear, eat and do. It is also affected by others.

Health Topic: Grief and its effects on the body

Symptoms: tight muscles (weakness and injury), dehydration, loss of appetite, nausea, sleep disturbances, possible development of depression and anxiety and cardiovascular disease

Causes and Risk Factors: loss of a loved one, missed opportunities, regret, environmental destruction, toxic masculinity, the patriarchy, racist policy

Tips from an Osteopathic Perspective: get outside for vitamin D exposure, deep breathing, sleep, connect with others and talk, be gentle with yourself, trauma and loss therapy

    THE TAKE AWAY:

The term, “they died of a broken heart," isn’t just a saying. Grief can have major physiological effects on the human body, and can actually leave us more susceptible to cardiovascular disease.

There is an unprecedented amount of grief in the world right now and the COVID-19 pandemic has truly demonstrated our absolute urgency in needing to gather tools to help us process and move through grief. In this episode, I suggest a list of ways to manage grief. These things can be helpful alongside trauma therapy and loss counseling.

  • May is mental health awareness month, and awareness around mental wellness has never been more important. Although I do not have the training in treating psychological disorders, I do see physical manifestations of mental (brain) illness and I’m using this episode to talk about my clinical experience of the effects that brain illness has on our physical bodies. I also share a unique story about a patient living with multiple personality disorder.

Health Topic: Brain Illness and the Body

What is it?: A brain illness is a dysfunction in the natural function of the brain. Brain illnesses include but are not limited to: depression, anxiety, psychotic disorders, add/adhd and bipolar disorder.

Tips from an Osteopathic Perspective: If you are struggling with your mental wellness right now, don’t wait to seek help from a medical doctor. Asking for imaging, and being very clear with what your symptoms are, could help you get a proper diagnosis. Keep a journal of what your concerns are to be able to track any changes in your mental, physical and emotional states, and be gentle with yourself. You are living through a pandemic, life is not easy right now.

    THE TAKE AWAY:

From a manual osteopathic perspective, it’s important we understand the brain illness our client is experiencing, but we don’t treat their psychological concerns, we treat their somatic dysfunction. This means, through very specific palpation, we apply techniques to the brain and spinal cord that help nourish and ensure the flow of cerebrospinal fluid. We also treat the physical manifestations of the brain illness.

  • Chronic pain is very complex and difficult to treat. From a healthcare provider perspective, finding nonaddictive pain relief for our patients can be a challenge. Opioid use in Canada is at an all time high and the rate of overdose is disheartening and tragic. From someone who has benefited from the short term effects of an opioid and felt the longterm negative impacts, I was determined to find an alternative to managing the chronic pain I feel daily in my leg and ankle from a traumatic event in 2017.

In this episode, I talk about some current research on CBD and pain.

Disclaimer: I am not authorized to give specific advice related to the consumption of CBD/THC and talk based on my own research and from personal experience.

    Health Topic: CBD and Pain

What is it?: CBD oil (cannabidoil) comes from cannabis and is non-psychoactive. It has been used to treat pain since 2900 B.C. It comes in different forms, and purities. CBD used with small amounts of THC have also been shown to help reduce the pain experience.

    THE TAKE AWAY:

If you’re curious to learn more about if CBD would be helpful in managing certain ailments, reach out to your healthcare provider to talk more about specific dosing and purities, before starting. It can be an expensive venture to start blindly and CBD oil is not covered under most extended medical plans. The use of pain medication is absolutely necessary in some cases, but the overused and overprescribed opioid drugs can have a harmful impact on our bodies and communities.

  • Health Topic: Plantar Fasciitis

What is it?: The plantar fascia is a thick band of connective tissue, a continuation of the calf muscles, that helps to form the arch of your foot and supports you while you walk.

Symptoms: You may experience stabbing pain in the sole of your foot, or around your heel, first thing in the morning. You may feel worse after exercising or get aggravated from standing too long.

Causes and Risk Factors: Running and bouncing activities can impact the plantar fascia, abnormalities in the foot and arch, standing for long and extended periods of time.

Differential Diagnosis: Lateral plantar nerve pain innervates the plantar fascia and the periosteum of the calcaneus, meaning it could be quite painful when irritated. The pain is often worse during prolonged activity. People may also be unable to abduct the 5th metatarsal.

Diagnosis and Treatment: It is important to get a thorough diagnosis of your heel and foot pain. Too often, heel pain is caused by the lateral plantar nerve irritation.

Tips from an Osteopathic Perspective: avoid walking barefoot, assess your common shoe wear to make sure it’s supportive for your specific foot, ease into new activities slowly, do fascial work in the lower leg and foot regions, consider acupuncture for nerve pain, legs up against wall for ten minutes

    THE TAKE AWAY:

This common condition can be debilitating in your training and exercise routine. It’s very often that your heal pain diagnosis of Plantar Fasciitis is misdiagnosed, so don’t wait too long before seeking another opinion.
