Ward Churchill and Jim Vander Wall's exposé of America's political police force, the FBI, reveals the steel fist undergirding "compassionate conservatism's" velvet glove. Using original FBI memos, the authors provide extensive analysis of the agency's treatment of the left, from the Communist Party in the 1950s to the Central America solidarity movement in the 1980s. The authors' new introduction posits likely trajectories for domestic repression.

2024 Best Books Awards Finalist â Biography
In todayâs sharply divided political culture, finding a deliberative leader with an enduring commitment to bipartisanship feels hopeless.
Half a century ago, in one of the United Statesâ most trying hours, a relatively unknown congressman from New Jersey rose to the occasion as chair of the House Judiciary Committee, which established the gold standard for presidential impeachment in holding President Richard M. Nixon accountable for his crimes.
Watergateâs Unexpected Hero: The Life of Peter W. Rodino Jr. is the long overdue biography of a man whom many pundits thought would shrivel as he entered the national spotlight. Instead, his calm presence during the televised proceedings helped to reassure an apprehensive nation, and he quickly became a household name.
Rodino remained a revered figure on Capitol Hill, lionized for his stewardship in a crisis until he retired fourteen years later. Author Lawrence Spinelli, who served as Rodinoâs press secretary, goes beyond Watergate to offer a meticulously researched, balanced account of his mentorâs service.
On the fiftieth anniversary of Nixonâs resignation, Spinelli shares new insights into historic events. Relying on primary sources and Rodinoâs personal recollections, Spinelli explores an extraordinary life that began in the rough streets of Newarkâs Little Italy and culminated in a distinguished public career stretching from the New Deal to the presidency of Ronald Reagan.
Along the way, Rodino worked with iconic political leaders to help address a wide range of public policy issues that still resonate today, including race relations, immigration, voting rights, and economic equality.

Jun 1, 2023
In this archive show, Dawn Schiller joins Ed Opperman to talk about her book, The Road Through Wonderland: Surviving John Holmes. A story of abuse, drugs, porn, murder and survival. It would have been so easy to give up. But she did something harder. She took a bad situation and, over time, turned it around.
Painstakingly honest, this chilling memoir reveals how a teenager became immersed in the bizarre life of legendary porn star John Holmes. Starting with a childhood that moulded her perfectly to fall for the seduction of âthe king of porn,â this autobiography recounts the perilous road that Dawn Schiller travelledâfrom drugs and addiction to beatings, arrests, forced prostitution, and being sold to the drug underworld. After living through the horrific Wonderland murders of 1981, she entered protective custody, ran from the FBI, and turned in John Holmes to the police. This is the true story of a young girlâs harrowing escape from one of the most infamous public figures, her struggle to survive, and her recovery from unthinkable abuse.

The 1999 examination of the JonBenet Ramsey case was the only book to suggest something other than the two conventional scenarios: one of the Ramseys killed the child or an intruder did it. "Presumed Guilty" broadened the discussion to include the involvement of child pornography/child exploitation around the murder. This electronic version of the book contains significant new information bolstering this theory and will be updated as further developments warrant.

New York Times bestselling author Stephen Singular provides an inside look at the Mormon polygamist sect that made headlines in 2008 for coercing young girls into marriage, and the story of their ruthless leader, Warren Jeffs.
As the self-proclaimed prophet of the Fundamentalist Latter Day Saints, Warren Jeffs held sway over thousands of followers for nearly a decade. His rule was utterly tyrannical. In addition to coercing young girls into marriages with older men, Jeffs reputedly took scores of wives, many of whom were his father's widows. But in 2007, after landing on the FBI's Ten Most Wanted List, Jeffs's reign was forcefully ended. He would be imprisoned for committing rape as an accomplice.
In When Men Become Gods, Edgar Awardânominee Stephen Singular traces Jeffs's rise to power and the concerted effort that led to his downfall. Newly updated, it describes the controversial 2008 raid on Jeffs's Texas compound and the fate of the 439 children taken from the sect. It offers readers a rare glimpse into a tradition that's almost a century old, but has only now been exposed.

A journalist's twenty-year fascination with the Manson murders leads to shocking new revelations about the FBI's involvement in this riveting reassessment of an infamous case in American history.
Over two grim nights in Los Angeles, the young followers of Charles Manson murdered seven people, including the actress Sharon Tate, then eight months pregnant. With no mercy and seemingly no motive, the Manson Family followed their leader's every order-their crimes lit a flame of paranoia across the nation, spelling the end of the sixties. Manson became one of history's most infamous criminals, his name forever attached to an era when charlatans mixed with prodigies, free love was as possible as brainwashing, and utopia-or dystopia-was just an acid trip away.
Twenty years ago, when journalist Tom O'Neill was reporting a magazine piece about the murders, he worried there was nothing new to say. Then he unearthed shocking evidence of a cover-up behind the "official" story, including police carelessness, legal misconduct, and potential surveillance by intelligence agents. When a tense interview with Vincent Bugliosi-prosecutor of the Manson Family, and author of Helter Skelter-turned a friendly source into a nemesis, O'Neill knew he was onto something. But every discovery brought more questions:
Who were Manson's real friends in Hollywood, and how far would they go to hide their ties?
Why didn't law enforcement, including Manson's own parole officer, act on their many chances to stop him?
And how did Manson-an illiterate ex-con-turn a group of peaceful hippies into remorseless killers?
O'Neill's quest for the truth led him from reclusive celebrities to seasoned spies, from San Francisco's summer of love to the shadowy sites of the CIA's mind-control experiments, on a trail rife with shady cover-ups and suspicious coincidences. The product of two decades of reporting, hundreds of new interviews, and dozens of never-before-seen documents from the LAPD, the FBI, and the CIA, CHAOS mounts an argument that could be, according to Los Angeles Deputy District Attorney Steven Kay, strong enough to overturn the verdicts on the Manson murders. This is a book that overturns our understanding of a pivotal time in American history.

On January 21, 1958, nineteen-year-old Charles Starkweather changed the course of crime in the United States when he murdered the parents and sister of his fourteen-year-old girlfriend (and possible accomplice), Caril Ann Fugate, in a house on the edge of Lincoln, Nebraska. They then drove to the nearby town of Bennet, where a farmer was robbed and killed. When Starkweatherâs car broke down, the teenagers who stopped to help were murdered and jammed into a storm cellar. By the time the dust settled, ten innocent people were dead, and the city of Lincoln was in a state of terror. Schools closed. Men with rifles perched on the roofs of their houses. The National Guard patrolled the street. If there is a cultural version of PTSD, the town suffered from it. Starkweather and Fugateâs capture and arrest, and the resulting trials about the killing spree, received worldwide coverage. The event would serve as the inspiration for the movie Natural Born Killers and Springsteenâs iconic album Nebraska. Today, the story has dropped far from the national consciousness. With new material, new reporting, and new conclusions about the possible guilt or innocence of Fugate, the tale is ripe for an updated and definitive retelling. In Starkweather, bestselling author Harry N. MacLean tells the story of this shocking event and its lasting impact, a crime spree that struck deep into the heart of the heartland.
Harry N. MacLean joins Ed Opperman to discuss this book and more.
