For our third Bombs Away, we're diving into the somewhat successful The Mummy (2017). This movie performed so poorly for Universal that they ended the Dark Universe franchise. It was the beginning of the universe and the end. The Dark Universe franchise was the MCU but for monsters. But if this movie indicates what a franchise full of classic Universal monsters could have been, it would have been blander than a bowl of oatmeal.
The story follows Nick Morton (Tom Cruise), a U.S. Army sergeant and mercenary, who accidentally discovers the tomb of an ancient Egyptian princess, Ahmanet (Sofia Boutella), during a mission in Iraq. Ahmanet, who made a pact with the dark god Set and was mummified alive for her crimes, is awakened and brings with her a malevolent curse. Oh, also, Russell Crowe is there.
This movie is somehow based on the 1999 movie The Mummy. You should watch that instead.

For our second Bombs Away, we're diving into The Adventures of Pluto Nash! It's an attempt to make Eddie Murphy a dang action hero! It wasn't successful. This 2002 American science fiction action comedy film is set in 2087 and follows former smuggler Pluto Nash, who now runs a nightclub on the Moon after buying it from Paulie from the Rocky movies. Despite a star-studded cast including Randy Quaid, Rosario Dawson, and Joe Pantoliano, this movie is considered one of the biggest box office bombs in cinematic history. Is it worthy of all the hate?

Welcome to our new series for June, Bombs Away! We discuss movies with a massive budget that bombed BIG at the box office. We're starting off with a cult classic: Waterworld. For those who don't know anything about the award-winning stunt show at Universal Studios, Waterworld is a post-apocalyptic action film released in 1995 starring Kevin Costner. The movie is set in a future where the polar ice caps have melted, covering the Earth in water and leaving humanity to struggle for survival in makeshift floating communities. Dryland is what they're searching for and Denis Hopper's villainous character, Deacon, is obsessed with finding it. Does this movie sink or swim all these years later?

HoneyBees is back to discuss The Towering Inferno with Mike and Ethan. The movie depicts a grand opening celebration for the world's tallest skyscraper, the Glass Tower, which sadly catches fire due to bad wiring. The film follows the efforts of the building's architect, played by Paul Newman, and the fire chief, played by Steve McQueen, as they work together to rescue the trapped guests, including the building's owner, portrayed by William Holden. Faye Dunaway also appears along with other notable actors of the time. The movie has it all: romance(?), peril, people cutting corners, awful son-in-laws, big buildings, bad decisions, and, of course, fire!

Cocktail is all about showmanship and being a flashy bartender. It doesn't matter if your drinks taste terrible; people love the pizzaz! Tom Cruise brings the pizzaz in one of his earliest roles. We had expectations for what this movie would be about, and let me tell you in advance, it is not what we thought it would be. There's a lot less talk about cocktails than we hope there will be. Regardless, it was a huge hit when it was released in 1988!

Cloak and Dagger was released alongside The Last Starfighter as a way of tying video games into movies! How does the kid from E.T. fare in a spy movie where he has to actually shoot someone and take their life? These are the deep questions Cloak and Dagger is asking. Also, imaginary friends seem all-powerful in this movie and can really get you out of some tight situations.

It sounds like 80 for Brady is right up Ethan's alley. Ethan is satisfied with just an all-star cast of comedic women actors thirsting for Tom Brady in a movie that Tom Brady produced. This follows four ladies, most of whom are over 80, trying to find a way to make it to the Super Bowl. It's a cozy movie! Only one of them has any significant problems they have to work through, and in the end, is it even a problem?
It's time to get Fierious!

Okay so Lerepchaun: Origins we somehow missed. We apologize for this error and we're being punished for it by actually watching this abomination of a movie. Someone thought it would be cool to reboot the franchise and remove all personality from the Leprechaun and make his design so bad that he could be a monster in any other movie you've ever heard of. This is a seriously upsetting movie from a quality perspective. This may be the final episode of our podcast at this rate.

The seventh entry in the Leprechaun series is a sequel to the very first leprechaun movie! Although Warwick doesn't return as the leprechaun, other characters from the first movie do! This is exciting. This is what's been missing from the leprechaun franchise. We just need a little continuity and we finally have it. What a great movie to end the series on! :)

The sixth entry in the Leprechaun series and technically a sequel to Leprechaun in the Hood, Back 2 tha Hood takes a much more serious tone than its predecessor. Weirdly enough it may have the best acting in the entire series. But is it enough to balance the total shift the movie makes?

For the first time ever, we're watching a movie for The Other Half Podcast AGAIN! Let's see if Leprechaun in the Hood hits differently in 2024. Only 5 years after we originally recorded this episode. What new insights will our prior viewings of the leprechaun franchise reveal? Will we still even like it? What does our leprechaun friend have to say about it this time?

Leprechaun 4: In Space actually may have broken us. Just like NASA, the budget is gone. There are people you recognize, but no one you love. Everyone is just a little bit horny. They've given up on the Leprechaun costume. Things are looking dire for this franchise. Sometimes movie franchises can have a correction period, let's see if the boys decide it's worth riding this franchise out until the end.

It's Leprechaun 3, which means we're heading to the city of sin, Vegas! Our first direct-to-video movie in our latest Watch Til You Can't Series. It was inevitable I suppose. But maybe this one is a golden nugget in the VHS/DVD bin. There's lots of greed to be had in Vegas hopefully the Leprechaun can hit it big and not have his gold stolen...again!

Whew, we're back with Leprechaun 2! What will the sequel hold? Is this even the same Leprechaun? There's no star power in this, so here's hoping this lives up to the original. Also, this was the last Leprechaun movie released in theaters. That doesn't quite bode well. Hopefully, we get some good rhyming in it though!

Happy Saint Patrick's Day y'all! It's time to watch all of the Leprechaun movies until we can't! We start the series with the first movie, which you'd expect to be good enough to spawn at least seven other movies. It stars Jennifer Aniston before she became famous on Friends. Warwick Davis plays a crafty little leprechaun who just wants his gold back and will do anything to find out where it is!!
You can hear our previous episode of Leprechaun in the Hood here! It came out back in 2018. Wow, how time flies.

Ethan and Mike wrap up Oscar season with American Fiction! Jeffery Wright stars in a movie where he can't get a book sold because the books are just not black enough. So in a drunken rage, he starts writing a book that goes against everything he believes in while using a fake name. The book sells like crazy and hilarity ensues! A strange Oscar movie choice, but hey it calls out previous Oscar winner Green Book so maybe the nomination is another attempt to say the Oscars are not that white after all.

For Ethan and Mike, maybe their ancestors knew each other in their Past Lives. Maybe this podcast was inevitable. Maybe our ancestors were also discussing various forms of cave paintings before microphones were invented. Past Lives is another Oscar-nominated movie depicting two folks who separated when they were young and are reconnecting over the years. But things get sticky when 24 years later, Nora is confronted with meeting her long-lost lover in the flesh while she's happily married!

Mike and Ethan continue Oscar Month with Killers of the Flower Moon. The latest in Martin Scorsese's extensive filmography. While not directly a mob, it shares some absolute core DNA with what Scorsese is known for. The movie follows Ernest who marries an Osage Native American woman, Mollie, who just happens to be part of a family RICH with oil money. Ernest's uncle is Robert DeNeiro so you know that can only cause trouble for the town and the Osage people. Sit back and relax as we dive into this over three-hour-long epic.
