At the age of nine, Susan Amsdenâs mother âdiedâ from pan creatic cancer in 1964, which began a continuing search for the meaning of life and death. In the years to come, she found the best explanations were from her exposure to hearing and reading near-death and related experiences. After 40 years, Susan learned her mother had a near-death experience within months of her 1964 passing/transition. Susan took early retirement from corporate life to pursue her passion of learning from near-death experiencers and after co-founding and co-facilitating the Tucson and Phoenix IANDS support groups for 5 years, then moved to Durham, NC to become Business Manager at the International Association for Near Death Studies (IANDS) Office. She has talked with thousands of near-death experiencers and now leads the Durham, NC IANDS group for 8 years. Susan is also the proud mother of two sons, Will, a previous horse trainer turned financial manager, and Brad, previously a Montana State Game Warden now a grizzly bear encounter technician.

The Phenomena of Astral Projection, the book, a modern classic about what today is generally referred to as out-of-body experiences, was published in 1951 and consisted of discussions of the âdoctrine of astral projection,â and of presentations of cases.
Today there are many books about out-of-body experiences, but this was not the case when The Phenomena of Astral Projection appeared. Muldoon and Carringtonâs work became an important reference work that presented many cases.
âMuldoon and Carrington believe âastral projectionâ implies that the mind is independent of the physical body, something that supports the idea of an etheric brain. This, they write, âcertainly seems but a short step to the acceptance of an etheric body, separate and apart from the physical, which body we may inhabit at death, and which constitutes the vehicle of the mind in astral projections.â â
Muldoon and Carrington discussed evidence for the existence of a subtle body:
âFirst, there is the massive weight of human belief and testimony, from the earliest times to our own day, in all parts of the world, and among civilized and uncivilized peoples. Second, we have those cases of apparitions in which the phantom-form seems to exhibit a mind of its ownâoften imparting information unknown to the seer at the time, but afterwards verified. Third, we have those cases in which material effects are apparently produced by the phantom, or its image appears upon photographic plates. Fourth, we have instances of materialization, at sĂ©ances⊠Fifth, we have cases of astral projection, in which the subject sees his own phantom body, and is occasionally seen by others. In these last instances especially, we have evidence that the phantom form possesses a mind of its own, separate and distinct from the physical brain and body, which latter may be seen resting upon the bed. The cumulative mass of such testimony is, we submit, most impressive, and gives us the right to believe that such a âspiritual bodyâ existsâas St. Paul long ago stated.â

Dr. Semkiw is a Board Certified Occupational Medicine physician who practices at a major medical center in San Francisco, where he served as the Assistant Chief of Occupational Medicine. Previously, he served as Medical Director for Unocal 76, a Fortune 500 oil company.

In 1999, I began working in the pharmaceutical industry, for the first ten years helping to bring new drugs to market, and for the past ten years working alongside academic clinical investigators in designing, conducting, helping publish and interpreting clinical studies looking into the effects of exciting new compounds in diseases such as HIV, hematological malignancies, obesity, and, most recently, neurological disorders such as narcolepsy and Alzheimerâs.
As a medical scientist, I have become skilled in understanding, interpreting, and disseminating key findings from complex clinical studies, similar in some ways to the AWARE studies. Generally, people who have had NDEs arenât trying to âsellâ anything, other than perhaps a seminar, book or DVD. We donât try to sell a new religion, because we left all that behind. However, spirituality plays a pretty strong role in the experiences we share. One of the strangest things Iâve noticed is that for those of us who had our NDEs as a result of some horrific accident, while in most cases the accident and its crazy circumstances would be the focus of any compelling story, an NDE negates that.
Once an NDE enters the picture, you almost forget about the accident- it becomes the least important part of the story, next to the NDE. My accident was amazing as accidents go, and I have an NDE friend who is only one of a handful in the world that she knows of who suffered and survived an internal decapitation. But to NDEâers, the circumstances that nearly, or do, kill us are just a footnote. Iâm sure that must be surprising, in some way.

A scientific team comprising a neuroscientist, forensic psychiatrist, attorney, and a science-trained medium embarked on a groundbreaking journey.
