  • If you walk into a hip smoothie shop or health food store, you’ll undoubtedly be flooded with the newest β€œsuperfoods” and cure-all herbs. Like so many things in our modern culture, herbal medicine also has its own β€œfads,” as it seems as if there’s almost a new one in style each season.

Although it may seem harmless at first and they may be a good gateway into the realm of herbal medicine, herbal fads may not necessarily be a good thing. Most of the time, they’re promoted by big supplement companies looking to inflate their bottom line, even if the truth is a bit fudged to get there (or even flat-out lies!). By learning about the danger of herbal fads, you can become a more conscious consumer and herbalist and know how to navigate this sometimes confusing territory.

In today’s blog post you’ll learn:

Who’s behind herbal fads and how they’re born in the market

How herbal fads hurt the credibility of herbalism and pigeonhole herbs

The ecological and cultural damage herbal fads can cause

Ways companies lie about herbs and how they can hurt you

Why herbal fads can change the way you think about herbs without even realizing it

  • These days, supplement shelves are filled with all kinds of different products based on plants. Tinctures, teas, whole plant preparations, standardized extractions, phytopharmaceuticals . . . but what’s the difference between them? These are the most common types of herbal extracts you’ll encounter, and they all have their own unique properties and uses.

Each of these extracts has a different level of strength in the body, with phytopharmaceuticals nearing the potency of conventional drugs. We’re often taught that stronger is better, but is that true for herbal extracts? By understanding the three main categories of herbal extracts, you’ll learn when it’s best to use each type and whether choosing the strongest extract is always the smartest option.

In today’s blog post, you’ll learn:

What whole plant, standardized, and phytopharmaceutical extracts are

The pros and cons of each type

When it’s the best time and place for each extract option

Why stronger is not always better when it comes to herbal medicine

The power of constituent synergy and how it’s lost in certain preparations

  • In this week’s podcast, Sajah speaks with Jesse Wolfe Hardin, an herbalist and environmental renaissance man. The author of over 25 books, Jesse Wolf has taught anima life practices for decades and was the first to coin the term rewilding. Jesse is the co-founder of the International Good Medicine Confluence Gathering, the digital magazine for herbalist healers and folklorists, Plant Healer Quarterly, and the co-creator of the Revealing Hedge Guild Oracle Guide. Today’s conversation takes place with Jesse in a remote river canyon, deeply nestled in the wild lands of New Mexico.

In this heart-to-heart conversation, Jesse talks about how the Earth is intelligent, living, sentient, and is constantly evolving, adapting, and healing itself. In that process, it offers us a model for our own healing and evolution. When we connect with the Earth and work with its plants and rhythms, we tap into that deep intelligence and allow it to guide us on our path to wholeness.

What’s so powerful about herbal medicine is that it’s not just about fixing a symptom or addressing a single ailment. It's about engaging in a relationship with the plants, with the land, and with ourselves. It's about recognizing that our health is interconnected with the health of the Earth and that by healing ourselves, we also contribute to the healing of the planet.

As we explore and deepen our understanding of herbal medicine, we need to remember that it's not just about the plants themselves, but about the relationships we cultivate with them and how they help us to reconnect with the living Earth. It's about fostering a sense of reverence and gratitude for the natural world and allowing that to inspire us to live more harmoniously with it. In this way, herbal medicine becomes a spiritual practice, a way of life that fosters a deeper connection to the natural world and a greater sense of belonging. It reminds us that we are not separate from nature, but an integral part of it. In that recognition, we find a sense of purpose and a path to true wellness.

    In today’s episode you’ll learn:

The importance of creating roots in life, and how grounding in a physical location opens your world to forming deeper connections to your local environment

Everyone has a gift and a calling in the world, and advice for how you can find yours

How approaching nature with curiosity, wonder, and an open mind rather than an agenda helps you to better learn from it

Why it’s so important to heed your personal calling and life mission in the context of herbalism

The satisfaction that comes from being a heart-driven herbalist and how each herbalist forges their own unique path unlike anyone else’s

  • Meadowsweet is often thought of as herbal aspirin. Even though it’s no secret that its compounds were originally used to formulate and synthesize aspirin, can you really use it in the same way?

If you want to get the same results from Meadowsweet as aspirin, you would have to drink quarts of the tea, which is tough to do because it’s incredibly bitter. Not only would you be feeling pretty nauseous by the end, but you would also only get the strength of a baby aspirin, if you’re lucky!

Even though Meadowsweet contains aspirin-like compounds, they are not the same. Meadowsweet is an herb used for centuries, and although it has many traditional uses, its applications are more relevant than ever in our modern day.

    In today’s episode, you’ll discover:

Meadowsweet’s bitter and astringent taste and why this combination is so good for treating ulcers

How Meadowsweet alleviates heartburn, ulcers in the GI, joint pain, and more with its energetic and biochemical properties

Why Meadowsweet is helpful for so many modern-day issues that didn’t use to exist

Meadowsweet’s powerful connection with Saturn and how it balances other planetary influences

  • Sweet and grounding, Burdock is an Earthy plant with its wide leaves, deep taproots, and ability to both nourish weakness and cleanse excesses from the body. Just as it loves to grow near waste grounds, Burdock clears metabolic waste products and toxins from the fluids in your body to keep your skin glowing and healthy.

Since the health of the skin is merely a reflection of the health of your liver, blood, lymph, and digestion, focusing on topical solutions alone won’t get you very far. By working on each of these organs on a deep level, you can find long-term relief for chronic skin conditions through Burdock.

In today’s plant profile, you’ll discover:

Why I call Burdock the β€œall-purpose alterative” and how it’s so versatile

Burdock’s unique blend of sweet, mineral salt, and slightly bitter tastes which leads to its versatile medicine influence

The relationship between oily and expansive Burdock and the gas planet Jupiter

How you can use Burdock to improve your skin, whether it’s overly dry or oily

Ways Burdock can help you deal with your worries about the unknown

Different ways you can prepare Burdock at home, from tea to soup

  • I know the beginning of the year is when a lot of us take a step back and look at our lives from a greater perspective. Perhaps we're looking back on the past year and thinking about what we'd like to change or do differently...

... Or we're looking forward and planning out how we want our lives to look and resolving to make it that way.

Hopefully as an herbalist, you're thinking about your plant path as well, and considering how you plan on taking your understanding of herbalism, people and plants to the next level so you can be a better practitioner.

The way I see it, there's so much to learn as an herbalist that it never really ends. The pathway to herbal mastery is to always be a lifelong student. But sometimes it can be hard to know how to get there or where we need to focus our studies and practice.

This very special audio was an issue of Materia Medica Monthly from a few years ago. But I think it's so relevant to herbalists around this time of year I wanted to share it with you too.

  • As you begin your herbal exploration, you’ll notice that there are a lot of books out there that either talk about a plant’s spiritual or medicinal aspects–but rarely both. This separation of science and spirit mirrors the allopathic approach used in conventional medicine. The problem is that this separation doesn’t exist!

The more I studied the alchemical perspective, the more I learned that an herb's physical and spiritual properties are connected. When you study herbs this way, you start to see them beyond what they treat, and into their core medicinal qualities instead so you can use the whole plant to treat the whole person.

In this week’s episode, you’ll learn:

How alchemy and herbalism connect and create a pathway to becoming a holistic herbalist

About the herbal 5 keys, which make it easier to learn about herbs

What energetic architecture is, and how it forms a strong foundation for learning about any herb

Some of my best tips for studying herbalism when just starting out
