At the moment they primarily get their iron for casting from the operation of their self built waste oil furnaces. Under the supervision of Julius Schmidt, Steve Daly built a small cupola in the mid sixties. He took the 8 ½ inch cupola with him when he graduated as an MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art. He used it, and the knowledge of iron casting that he learned from Schmidt to begin spreading the technique of self-cast iron for the purpose of art making outside of Cranbrook. Daly is one of the main early contributors to the spread of the cast iron art movement in America.

After learning from Julius how to run iron he went on to play a meaningful role in spreading the use of self cast iron as an artistic medium.
