It is summertime and that can only mean one thing: Beach, here I go! Since it is the sunniest time of the year, we thought we’d talk about whether the beach and the ocean are good for our health, and more specifically, our microbiome.Although it is not a surprise, everything in nature is an ecosystem and needs to be balanced for it to work optimally, and bodies of water are not exempt. Today you will learn about lakes microbes, ocean microbes, and even sand microbes and we will discuss some other studies as we talk about all this. You will find the links of the studies below.Links:Freshwater microbes: https://medcraveonline.com/JMEN/microbiomes-of-freshwater-lake-ecosystemsnbsp.html#:~:text=The%20microbiomes%20in%20lake%20ecosystems,for%20different%20groups%20of%20bacteria.Ocean Microbes: https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/science.aac8455#:~:text=The%20ocean%20microbiome%20is%20a,members%20is%20now%20becoming%20familiarStudy skin test microbiome: https://asm.org/Press-Releases/2019/June/Ocean-Swimming-Alters-Skin-Microbiome,-Increasing#:~:text=%E2%80%93%20June%2022%2C%202019%20%E2%80%93%20Swimming,the%20American%20Society%20for%20Microbiology..Surfer-biome: https://ucsdnews.ucsd.edu/feature/surfing_the_world_for_microbeshttps://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2018/01/180115094243.htmSand microbes: https://asm.org/Articles/2017/August/sandy-beach-microbes-the-good-the-bad-and-the-fles

We are genuinely excited to discuss new research about our incredible microbiome, but of course, we wouldn't talk about this without having with us our expert… Andrea Mcbeth!Researchers have been debating whether we should try to get our microbiomes back to a more ‘ancestral microbiome’ – the kind of microbiome we had before we had all of these environmental exposures to things that kill members of our microbiomes. This would be the ‘rewilding’ strategy. Essentially the idea would be that we would try to have microbiomes that looked like they did before industrialization. To understand the details of this amazing paper, listen to this episode and you will be able to understand the amazing power of our microbes!Paper Link: https://www.cell.com/trends/molecular-medicine/fulltext/S1471-4914(22)00113-7?_returnURL=https%3A%2F%2Flinkinghub.elsevier.com%2Fretrieve%2Fpii%2FS1471491422001137%3Fshowall%3Dtrue

Did you know that we all have something called the cannabinoid system? Have you heard about Cannabinoids Food? Well, this system is one of the most important physiologic systems involved in establishing and maintaining human health. With its complex actions in our immune system, nervous system, and virtually all of the body’s organs, the endocannabinoids are literally a bridge between body and mind. By understanding this system, we begin to see a mechanism that could connect brain activity and states of physical health and disease. If you want to know more about it, Dr. Joe, Heather, and Romi are here to discuss everything about it and also what a cannabinoid-rich diet means. In addition, we will discuss the new book written by Dr. Joe titled The Cannabinoid CookbookEnjoy this episode!

Did you know that over time, stress can cause levels of gut bacteria (the gut microbiome) to become unbalanced? This leads to changes in neurotransmitter function and perpetuates increased stress and anxiety in the brain. Given where everything in the world has been, the level of stress people are experiencing is over the top. Today we are going to talk about stress and the microbiome. The way the microbiome and stress interact is through cortisol, neurotransmitters, and cytokines. It’s a big complex interaction, so let’s start... Enjoy the episode!
