Twitter Versus Mastodon: Who will fix our broken social media spaces? Who will protect free speech and or against hate speech and misinformation? In this interview with professor Yom Ophir of the University of Buffalo we discuss all of these issues and more. Yotam Ophir (PhD, University of Pennsylvania, 2018) is an Assistant Professor of Communication at the University at Buffalo. His work combines computational methods for text mining, network analysis, experiments and surveys to study media content and effects in the areas of political, science, and health communication.
Dr. Ophir authored and co-authored more than 30 peer-review academic papers, published in journals such as American Journal of Public Health, Journal of Communication, Communication Research, Public Understanding of Science, Journal of Public Health, Health Communication, Communication Methods and Measures, and more. His upcoming coauthored book (Oxford University Press) on the 2020 Presidential Elections, “Democracy amid Crises: Polarization, Pandemic, Protests, & Persuasion”, will be available in January 2023. Alberto M. Fernandez is vice-president of the Middle East Media Research Institute and a member of the board of directors of George Washington University's Center for Cyber and Homeland Security. He served as the U.S. State Department’s coordinator for the Center for Strategic Counterterrorism Communications from 2012 to 2015, retiring from the State Department in May 2015. Fernandez has served as U.S. ambassador to the Republic of Equatorial Guinea; charge d’affaires to the Republic of Sudan; director for Near East public diplomacy; director for Iraq public diplomacy; and in senior public diplomacy positions at the U.S. embassies in Afghanistan, Jordan, Syria, and Guatemala. His awards include the 2008 Presidential Meritorious Service Award, 2006 Edward R. Murrow Award for Excellence in Public Diplomacy, and a 2003 Superior Honor Award for his work in Afghanistan. Fernandez has published in ReVista: the Harvard Review of Latin America, Middle East Quarterly, and the Journal of the Assyrian Academic Society. What Happened to Tunisia? in 2015 the Tunisian National Dialogue Quartet The Nobel Peace for their work that led to a national unity government. For a few months, it seemed like democracy was possible for the northern African nation. However, just a few months later, Tunisia faced economic, social and political instability that led to the elections of President Kais Saied. Despite running as a reformer who promised to protect democracy, Saied reversed many of the democratic safeguards protected by the 2014 constitution. Understanding Putin's global strategy. Many Western observers were surprised by Vladimir Putin's invasion of Ukraine. However, a decade's worth of Russian media coverage of the world on government sponsored media channels such as Russia Today and Sputnik indicate that the Russian government's focus shifted away from engagement of the west and towards audiences outside of Europe and the USA. This shift provided a solid cue as to Putin's global strategy moving away from NATO and the West and towards repositioning Russia as a global competitor to the United States. Luigi Di Gregorio is a Lecturer of Political Communication at Tuscia University (Viterbo, Italy). He also teaches Campaign Management in several Masters programs and graduate schools. He is a political consultant and was head of institutional communication for the City of Rome and manager in the European Parliament. He is a member of the editorial board of the Journal of Political Marketing and is involved mainly with political communication, electoral studies and comparative politics. His last book is Demopathy and the Democratic Malaise. Symptoms, Diagnosis and Therapy, Edward Elgar Publishing (2021).

Why do Americans no care about foreign affairs? This is a common question.
In this episode, we offer several potential explanations. Americans have always been isolationists dating back to the founding fathers. As residents of a large island that is surrounded by two oceans and good neighbors in the form of Mexico and Canada, Americans have the luxury of living in a bubble. Next, media coverage. A large body of academic literature indicates that the vast majority of nations receive little to no coverage at all. As the old saying says, the media doesn't tell us what to think but it does have the ability to tell us what to think about. As the media provides little focus on the world, Americans may understand that foreign affairs are not important. Next, we debate what this means and why it matters? How do governments gain support for their foreign policy objectives from their domestic audiences? Why is this important?

In June of 2022 the people of Colombia went to the polls for the 2nd round elections between Gustavo Petro, a senator and former Mayor of Bogota, defeated Rodolfo Hernández Suárez, former Mayor of Bucaramanga, in the runoff election. Who won? Why did they win? and what does it mean for the people of Colombia? I discuss with Bogota based Colombian journalist Poly Martinez More about Poly, she explains; I studied Philosophy and Political Science at the Universidad de Los Andes, in Bogotá. For most of my life, I've been a journalist, but my CV is eclectic: I have worked in Government (Foreign Office), with oil majors (BP, internal and external comms, and comm for crisis management), with several NGOs, like Kroc Institute, encharged of monitoring the implementation of the Peace Agreement signed in 2016; Op-ed writer, newspaper and magazine editor; I'm correspondent for the Spanish Abc newspaper, among others; radio talk-show frequent panelist (news of Colombia nd the world). University teacher (journalism and political analysis), but also free-lancer writing about topics related to high-performance amateur cyclists, runners, and triathletes. In all of the different jobs, communications or comms consultancy have been at the core of what I do.
