As usual, we give the origins and development of policing in America, followed by a very intense discussion into the problems that we face by police, as well as the risks that we take by defunding the police. In this episode of the Reframers, we celebrate our 1 year of podcasting by talking about unions in America. We break down the different types of unions that exist, discuss the difference between public and private sector unions, and what some of the pros and cons of joining a union might be. This is a great episode riddled with pop culture references and a ton of information about "collective bargaining." Thank you for listening!

We're talking about healthcare in America this week.
We focus on:How do you get health insurance in the U.S?Why is it so expensive? Why do people disagree about how healthcare should work in the US?
We're always striving to make any conversations on the Reframers a model for real-life conversations. We encourage reimagining disagreement, by "reframing" what it means to talk with someone who sees different media than you, grew up with a different background, or has different beliefs.

This week we're discussing a current favorite buzzword by politicians and the media: CRT. Found in headlines on a weekly (daily) basis, the Reframers sit down to define CRT (Critical Race Theory), talk about what it ACTUALLY means, and break down why it might be a flawed debate in the first place. Armed with some good research and a healthy handful of questions, the 3 hosts dive in ready to learn.
Zach acknowledges the elephant in the room: it's nerve-wracking to talk about race for fear of getting it wrong and being branded a racist. Erin reminds us that this is a graduate-level theory, and we ponder how a complex idea has become a mainstream topic of debate. Kassie points out how big, negative stereotypes about both the left and the right are deeply damaging our perceptions of the "other side" and making it feel impossible to talk to each other. We're always striving to make any conversations on the Reframers a model for real-life conversations. Welcome back to The Reframers! This week we’re discussing private prisons. Erin wants to know if Zach’s conservative leanings are going to influence his take. Kassie wants to know what a private prison even *is*…(did you know there was more than one kind of prison?)Join us as we break it all down. Sneak peek of the questions below:What is the difference between a private prison and a public prison, and what are the benefits of having both options available? In what cases would an incarcerated person be placed in either a private or public prison? Do private prisons choose what type of prisoners they house? How do private prisons make money, as a business? Aka who pays their bills? Typically in a capitalist society, businesses make money when people choose one product or service provider over another. Are the prisoners choosing where they go, or their families? Do the prisons have to worry about remaining competitive against other prisons?Follow us on Instagram: https://instagram.com/reframerspod?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y=Visit our NEW website: https://www.reframerspod.com/Follow us on TikTok: https://vm.tiktok.com/ZTdQxyS9g/Follow us on Facebook: https://m.facebook.com/reframerspod

The Reframers are discussing journalism this week. We review the messy history of journalism going back to the founding, and how it has evolved over time. This episode is packed with discussion on the distrust of our media, the decline in print journalism, and how the United States relates to other countries. It's a forward-looking discussion with critiques, facts, and recommendations!

"The Reframers discuss two off-limits topics: religion and politics. They examine the Founders' views on religion and whether the Constitution has religious influences. They also delve into the relationship of religion and politics today, tax exemptions for religious organizations, political outrage based on religious beliefs (is Christmas under attack?), and how to balance religious beliefs with the limited options of two parties. Everything is on the table in this personal episode for the Reframers."

This week, our producer Kassie takes over the podcast and asks Zach and Erin questions, off the cuff! This was a fun episode to record and we think you will really enjoy this week's show. We cover 20+ questions and decide what political parties we would be in, IF, we had more than a two-party system.

LISTEN TO PART ONE HERE We promised this one was coming! In Gun Control Part II, the Reframers pick up where they left off in Part I, diving into the problem of mass shootings in the United States and then getting specific about the kinds of legislative policies that they think are most effective in addressing gun violence. They discuss whether there should be weapons bans, how to control who has access to firearms, and if there are other measures that we should be considering in evaluating this problem. They also touch on the importance of community investment as a method to decrease crime and gun violence. We hope you enjoy this Part II of a topic we can't seem to stop talking about.

This week one of the Reframers had a life-long wish fulfilled, listen to find out what it is! Once we geek out about that, we tackle the death penalty. We of course talk about the historical context of capital punishment in the United States and then share our feelings about it today. We spend much of the episode exploring the data around how it is applied and the cost to our nation, as well as discussing the consequences of if we get sentencing wrong. Tune in to learn about the most serious of sentences our legal system can hand out!

The Reframers discuss the separation of powers that is built into our system of government. We review the history of each branch and how they've evolved over time.
Of course, each branch has its own unique set of powers, and the ability to check on the other branches' power. We drill down into why they sometimes purposefully do not check each other, and how this can hurt our democratic processes.
Finally, we talk about different proposals that could rebalance power between the 3 branches in favor of the people.

The Reframers tackle censorship in this week's episode. The discussion ranges from the origins of free speech and why it was important to the Founders, to the development of free speech in the U.S., to the Internet and what's happening with censorship today. They debate President Trump's social media ban, discuss Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, and dig into whether tech companies are biased in their editing of posts and banning decisions. If you have been wondering about censorship and are interested in hearing some conflicting perspectives, be sure to check out this episode.
