The Oscars!? That was months ago! Just so happens, that's when we recorded this episode. It inadvertently sat on the shelf while Carlos moved to a new home that consumed his life! But now, movies once again consume his life! What are we here for!? Talking about movies!
After watching Conan O'Brien brilliantly host the Oscars, we tallied up the score to see who predicted more winners! Then talked about how the Academy made a lot of wrong decisions.

This week we look back at our 1967 episode and see if it needs any mistakes rectified or omissions told.
In this episode:
We made some mistakes. We hold ourselves accountable for those mistakes! Even if we have to make fun of each other for making those mistakes.
We talk about Hank Stram and Superbowl 1...briefly. And how he introduced Gatorade to football and the rest of sports from a little known scientist at the University of Florida.
We also talk a bit more about the entr'acte and how it was common in movies in the 60s. Ok, a lot more, and whether or not intermissions should be used in modern films.
This intermissions' outro music, The Sound of Silence by Simon and Garfunkel, used three times in The Graduate, including the iconic final bus scene.
All this and more, inside a compact thirty minutes!

This week we look back at our 1939 episode and see if it needs any mistakes rectified or omissions told.
In this episode:
The audio quality took a little hit while recording this show. We managed to fix the problem so future shows will sound much better. Always fighting the robots...
We made some mistakes. We hold ourselves accountable for those mistakes! Even if we have to make fun of each other for making those mistakes.
We talk about the legendary baseball player Lou Gehrig, his number was retired when he did in 1939. We couldn't remember which number it was, but we found it.
We also talk about Carlos's obsession with Crashing Thru, the Canadian adventure movie featuring bad guys, femme fatales, and one of the best opening theme song in cinematic history!
The main story this episode was about the state of movie theaters and how to get people to go to movies again. Will streaming dominate the medium? We talk a bit about that.
This intermissions' outro music, the theme song from Crashing Thru written by Betty Laidlaw and Robert Lively, performed by actor James Newill, who starred as Renfrew the Canadian Mountie.

This week we are excited to talk about the Oscars, but this time, the Oscars that haven't happened yet! Yes, we're looking forward and giving our predictions for 2026 Oscars that are right around the corner!
In this episode:
We go through the entire list of categories, talk about the nominees, and each of us takes a shot at who the winner will be! We made a list of all our choices, and following the Oscar Awards show, we will do a recap to compare our choices with just how right OR WRONG the academy's choices were!
Will A Friend of Dorothy win the Live Action Short? Will KPop Demon Hunters close their stellar year with the Animated Feature award? In the head to head battle between Ryan "The Coog" Coogler and Paul "PTA" Thomas Anderson, who will come out on top of the Best Director Award, and will Sinners take the coveted Best Picture Award, or will it be One Battle After Another? We're not sure how the Academy will vote, but we're pretty sure our picks are gold!
You don't want to miss it!

This week we look back at our 2012 episode and see if it needs any mistakes rectified or omissions told.
In this episode:
We made some mistakes. We hold ourselves accountable for those mistakes! Even if we have to make fun of each other for making those mistakes.
We talk about the talented actor Karl Urban, who starred in such greats such as the 2009 reboot of Star Trek, Dredd, The Boys, and the inestimable and timeless trilogy The Lord of the Rings; we apologize for forgetting his name during the main show.
We also become cool science teachers explaining the basics of the Higgs Boson particle! Well, we thought we were cool.
The main story this episode was about sequels, remakes and reboots, focusing on the monumental failure of 2012's John Carter and whether it would or could be remade. How do some movies get remade when other more successful or deserving ones do not? We're not sure, but we agree that it would be awesome to see remakes of 1991's The Rocketeer or 1984's Last Starfighter.
This intermission's outro music, the theme song from The Last Starfighter soundtrack by Craig Safan.

Welcome to SEASON 2!! As we start the new year, we start a new season of laughs and movie talk here on the Retros. We're so happy to have found such success when we launched season 1 last year. We appreciate everyone who took the time to listen to us and we hope you continue to listen and enjoy our ramblings. Even though this is Episode 1 of Season 2, we're going to continue the numbering pattern for the list of episodes to keep it from being confusing, so in the episode list, you'll see this is Episode: 31. Really, the Seasons are for our logistical benefit. I'm already making it more complicated than it needs to be. Just keep an eye out for new episodes!
We again travel back to the Golden Age of Postwar America, to the year 1953! We were ecstatic to watch the movies of this year and were even more excited to talk about them. Here is the list of Oscar nominees:
From Here to EternityJulius CaesarThe RobeRoman HolidayShaneAs if that wasn't enough, we added a few other categories to the Oscar list like The Best Grandma Moment, The Independent Darling, and Who Did It Best!
Did Alan Ladd die as he rode off on his horse in Shane, or did he live and just ignored that obnoxious kid? We have opinions about that ending. As the actors' egos threatened to throw the production of Julius Caesar off the rails, just how did the director Joseph Mankiewicz manage to keep everyone in line? We don't know for sure, but we have some pretty good ideas! The city of Rome in Roman Holiday sure seemed sparsely populated in the 1950s, though it was certainly the best place to take an itinerant princess out for a coffee date. War of the Worlds, or Invaders from Mars? Which movie had the best Martian invasion? Hollywood loved to invade Earth back then. And why did so many movies have weirdly naughty titles rife with double entendres? It was a different time, we're sure. Is Ed Wood's Glen or Glenda featuring Bela Lugosi one of the best indy darlings ever? Listen and find out! PULL THE STRING!!
Want to be part of the excitement, listen and find out who we think could have been added to the Best Picture list! Was the Academy right? Do you agree with our correct assessments? Listen and find out! Don't forget to follow us on any of the major social media at theretrospodcast.

Since we had so much to say, this week we're presenting the second part of 1985!
But first, here is a reminder of this years list of Oscar nominees:
Out of AfricaThe Color PurpleKiss of the Spider WomanPrizzi's HonorWitnessAs if that wasn't enough, we added a few other categories to the Oscar list like The Best Grandma Moment, The Independent Darling, and Who Did It Best!
Was Rocky IV the sequel of the year? Is Dario Argento's Demons the kind of horror movie that sticks with you? We also discuss a couple of the brat pack movies, The Breakfast Club, and St. Elmo's Fire, and how they catapulted the careers of the brat packers. But which one was better? Don't worry, we tell you. We also discuss some of the best action movies and their muscular heroes, of not just 1985, but of the whole decade of the 80s! Who had the best one-liners; Schwarzenegger? Stallone? Norris? And which of their movie franchises came up on top? All this and more as we close on the stellar movie year of 1985.

This week we go "back in time" to 1985! Wow, it was such an enjoyable trip to a time of our tumultuous youth to watch the movies that were so essential to our formative years, and boy did we find a lot to talk about!
So much so, we decided to split the show into two parts! Part one is available now, Part 2 will be available next week.
But first, we are so excited to discuss this years list of Oscar nominees:
Out of AfricaThe Color PurpleKiss of the Spider WomanPrizzi's HonorWitnessAs if that wasn't enough, we added a few other categories to the Oscar list like The Best Grandma Moment, The Independent Darling, and Who Did It Best!
With all the great action, adventure, comedy, scifi and fantasy movies that were produced in 1985, why did the Academy choose to be so SERIOUS with their nominees and exclude all of the mentioned genres from the list? We talk about that. Not only do we talk about it, we created our own Oscar's list with blackjack and hookers! Ok, no blackjack or hookers, but we made a 10 slot "Pop Oscars" list containing all the genre movies that got snubbed by the Academy. Who did we think would win? Back to the Future? Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome? Pee Wee's Big Adventure? Well, you'll have to listen to Part One and find out! Plus Comedy Gold, the amazingly competitive Comedy Lead, and we discuss what Carlos really thought of Prizzi's Honor!
Want to be part of the excitement, listen and find out who we think could have been added to the Best Picture list! Was the Academy right? Do you agree with our correct assessments? Listen and find out! Don't forget to follow us on any of the major social media at theretrospodcast.

This week we look back at our 1987 episode and see if it needs any mistakes rectified or omissions told.
In this episode:
We made some mistakes. We hold ourselves accountable for those mistakes! Even if we have to make fun of each other for making those mistakes.
We talk about the late, great John Witherspoon, who starred in cinematic touchstones such as I'm Gonna Git You Sucka, Boomerang, House Party, and the Friday series of movies, and apologized for forgetting his name during the main show.
This week we talk about 1987 as the beginning of the end of the slow decline of the sword and sandal fantasy movie genre, bottoming out with Slave Girls From Beyond Infinity. We both agreed that Running Man was the most 80s movie made in the 80s, but part of that was the interpretation of the future that science fiction movies portrayed. We talked about the different futures that more recent movies sought to show.
This intermissions' outro music, Theology/Civilization from the Conan the Barbarian soundtrack by Basil Poledouris.

This week we go back, way back, to 1939! It was a fascinating dive into an era of movies we didn't know that much about. But we learned! Oh, we learned... Here are the ten movies nominated for Outstanding Production (what they called "Best Picture" back then):
Gone With the WindDark VictoryMr. Smith Goes to WashingtonGoodbye, Mr. ChipsLove AffairNinotchkaWizard of OzOf Mice and MenWuthering HeightsStagecoachAs if that wasn't enough, we added a few other categories to the Oscar list like Comedy Gold, The Independent Darling, and Who Did It Best!
Why didn't Crashing Thru get nominated for being an exciting movie with a banger theme song for a tight 55 minutes while Gone With the Wind needed close to four hours to accomplish!? Over 50 movies were Westerns in 1939, Stagecoach was the shining pinnacle of the golden age of westerns. Should the doctors tell you if you're dying of brain cancer? Would you tell your husband? If not, why? And Humphrey Bogart in a non-private investigator role!? What kitchens have 15 foot ceilings!? Dark Victory covers all this weirdness and so much more.

Sorry for the delay, we were on a brief marketing sabbatical! This week we look back at our 2008 episode and see if it needs any mistakes rectified or omissions told. But probably not. But probably, we're not always that accurate...
In this episode:
We made some mistakes. We hold ourselves accountable for those mistakes! Even if we have to make fun of each other for making those mistakes.
Except this time! No mistakes, maybe a few omissions... This week we talk about 2008 being the "year of redemption" for three popular actors who rose to prominence, stumbled and rose again brighter and more popular! Brendan Frasier, Robert Downy Jr., and Mickey Rourke all had great movies in 2008 that brought them back to high Hollywood status. We talk about that.
Maura Rooney? Rooney Maura? Who were they? Are those names correct? Are they actually sisters or one actress who plays both by changing clothes quickly between red carpet runs? Are they scions of a great NFL family, or three racoons in a fedora and trenchcoat? Never have a couple of talented actresses brought up so many weird questions.
This intermission's outro music, Low by Flo-Rida; a song like a black hole that was impossible to escape from in the late 2000s! It was found in many movies throughout the years, but in 2008 was featured prominently in Tropic Thunder, The Women, and Step Up 2: The Streets.
All this and more, in a compact thirty minutes! Our technical issues have been mostly addressed and we both sound pretty good if we do say so ourselves even if we were a little sniffly and under the weather this week.

This week we look at the Best Picture nominations of 2012 and noticed something different! This year the Academy went with a ten movie list. Not to be daunted, we dove right in:
ArgoAmourBeasts of the Southern WastesDjango UnchainedLes MiserablesLife of PiLincolnSilver Linings PlaybookZero Dark ThirtyAs if that wasn't enough, we added a few other categories to the Oscar list like Comedy Gold, The Independent Darling, and Who Did It Best!
Did Argo deserve the win? Did Les Miserables and Life of Pi deserve the nominations, or did they take up space that The Hobbit and Iron Sky could have had? Why did John Carter of Mars fail so spectacularly even with all the money and effort put into it? We have some ideas. This was a banner year for franchises! Sequels abound, and movies like American Pie and Underworld were on their fourth installments!

Where we look back at our 1974 episode and see if it needs any mistakes rectified or omissions told. But probably not. But probably, we're not always that accurate...
In this episode:
We made some mistakes. We hold ourselves accountable for those mistakes! Even if we have to make fun of each other for making those mistakes.
The toys of the 70s were the best. Not an opinion; it's a fact. We also talk a bit more about what kind of Lord of the Rings movie would have been made in the 70s and by whom after John Borman had to drop out of his production of one. Could it have been Spielberg? Kubrick? Lean? Well, we had the animated Bakshi version, and it was ok. We also compare and contrast disaster movies from the 70s with those from 2005-2025. Our verdict, the 70s had better ones! And 2009's The Knowing was awful.
This intermission's outro music, One Tin Soldier, the theme from Billy Jack by The Original Caste!

Bonnie and ClydeThe GraduateIn the Heat of the NightDoctor DoolittleGuess Who's Coming for DinnerPlus a few other categories we felt needed to be added to the Oscar list like Comedy Gold, The Independent Darling, and Who Did It Best!
This week we discuss Carlos nearly crashing out because he didn't understand that the first two and half minutes of Doctor Doolittle which only had a black screen and music was an entr'acte and wasn't actually a broken or corrupted version of the movie on Amazon he spent money to watch. Side-note, Carlos didn't like Doctor Doolittle. We also discuss the prevalence of Western movies during this time period despite their fading popularity, Anne Bancroft's angry reaction to Dustin Hoffman's "romantic" wedding crashing in The Graduate, and our love for King Kong Escapes, the Inoshiro Honda kaiju masterpiece where King Kong fights a mechanized version of King Kong...and other monsters.

Where we look back at our 2001 episode and see if it needs any mistakes rectified or omissions told. But probably not. But probably, we're not always that accurate...
In this episode:

Rat Race! A criminally overlooked movie in the chase genre. Every twenty years or so, Hollywood brings out a chase movie starting with It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World in 1963 and then Rat Race in 1983. So we are overdue for new chase movie! Hollywood is slacking. Who would we like to see in an ensemble comedy cast of misfits and miscreants racing madly for some gonzo reward? We have some ideas. We probably could have researched those ideas a bit better, though.
All this and more, in a compact thirty minutes! And if you listen closely, you may hear the exact moment the online meeting we used to remotely record this episode stutter to a close and we had to restart the meeting in order to close the show! The lengths we go, I swear...
