In this episode, weâre starting our look at Volume 3, Issue 1 of UFO Magazine. This is an issue jam packed full of great UFO stories and history, including a key piece of the UFO Conspiracy narrative of the late 80s, the dawn of the Mr. Ed photos, and a surprising rabbit hole that led me to a âsonic xenolinguistics performance art groupâ (including this great number!)

Itâs a rare Saucer Life interview! In this episode, we talk to author Gabriel Mckee about his new biography of Gray Barker: The Saucerian: UFOs, Men in Black, and the Unbelievable Life of Gray Barker. It comes out on April 22, 2025 andâhaving read an advance copyâI can say it is an astounding and thoroughly researched work.
Here are some links to get the book:

We are beginning a multi-part journey that is going to take us to the end of the year. Contactees, UFOs, the counterculture of the 60s, communes, weird space music, a new messiah for a new age⊠itâs wild. We begin, in this episode, with Allen Noonan, a sign painter from California who has an enlightening experience and begins building a community around it.

Itâs the 7 ( and 1/12) anniversary of The Saucer Life! For the occasion, and in response to some messages Iâve received, Iâm going to be revisiting my list of top ten important UFO books from four years ago. There are some changes to the list which will doubtless generate controversy (this may be an exaggeration). After listening, you can find the list and links to purchase (which benefit the show) here!

Art Gattiâs 1978 book UFO Encounters of the Fourth Kind? is a tour de force of supposed alien-human sexual encounters. Going all the way back to the dawn of time, Gatti makes the case for long-term alien sexual interference with humanity. Iâd like to say he does it with tact and class but that would be a lie. Listen along as we cover the book, detail some of his very 1970s turns-of-phrase, and talk about the very interesting story of Cynthia Applegate, since Gatti doesnât spend enough time on it!

It's another installment in our Zine Scene series! This time, we're looking at the February, 1969 issue of Flying Saucers Magazine. This was a long-running publication from the prolific Ray Palmer, who co-founded Fate Magazine and brought us the dubious glory of the Richard Shaver hollow Earth tales.
This issue is rife with interesting ads, a condemnation of the Allende Letters, and more!

In 1975 and 1976 retired police chief George Wheeler had two extraordinary UFO sightings. He was not alone in this, as witnesses came out of the woodwork and corroborated his story in remarkable detail. In this episode of the Saucer Life, weâll look at these sightings and the UFO culture that grew up around them in this tiny Wisconsin town.

Itâs time for the (mostly) annual Saucer Life Saucer Road Trip and, as with 2020âs visit to the Kelly and Hopkinsville areas, Associate Producer Simpson J. Hanover III is with me to provide an everyperson perspective to the things we see and do. We hit Point Pleasant and Braxton County, retrace my path through the TNT area where I saw the Mysterious Black Cadillac in 2021, and check out new-to-us museums and attractions in the region.

This is a bit of a sequel to our 2020 episode about Greta Woodrew, (Why do Birdlike Aliens Suddenly Appear?)and focuses on some newly available issues of her Woodrew Update newsletter from the 1980s. From Earth Changes to prepper-behavior, to the (not so) subtle bragging on her genius children, these newsletters provided an interesting window into a woman who was one of the most atypical contactees out there.

The Alien Abduction Survival Guide by Michelle LaVigne is... not entirely what it sounds like. While there are several tips for coping with one's abduction experiences, the most interesting aspect of the book is the manner in which the author positions herself within the shared experiences of humans and their alien mentors.

Recounting a contactee tale that took place in 1955, Oscar F. Knight's booklet "The Wolverton Trail Event" is a unique story that exudes sincerity. Regardless of the saucer content, this is fascinating account!

In this episode, I asked myself some questions that Iâve always wanted the answers to. Well, at least my answers on this particular day. These answer may change in the future. Whatâs the deal with Roswell? Least favorite episode of my own podcast? Favorite UFO book? Believe me when I say that I wasnât sure how Iâd answer when I asked myself!

As we wrap up our deep dive into the third issue of (California) UFO Magazine, we find ourselves knee-deep in tales of UFO talk at the Whole Life Expo. Then, we're off to the wilderness where we make contact with the elusive families of Space Sasquatches.
Next, we take a philosophical detour with a mind-bending column by the one and only Terrence McKenna. And then, drumroll, please, we look at a review of Strieber's "Communion". which at the time was so fresh off the presses, you could practically smell the ink. And finally, we explore the dolphin-alien connection, complete with dolphin channelling.

Itâs back to the early days of UFO Magazine or (California UFO Magazine) for a fairly lighthearted romp through a publication that did its best to provide insight into all aspects of the UFO culture of the time, much to the chagrin of the buttoned-up nuts-and-bolts time. That tension, between âscientificâ and ânew ageâ approaches is very much apparent in this issue!
In fact, thereâs so much good stuff in here, that weâll be finishing it up on the next episode! The documentary mentionedâ_UFOs and Channellingâ_can be found on Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fy92Xz6jyI4

Is it an abduction? A contact experience? Both? Neither? The encounter that Carl Higdon had in October, 1974 in Wyoming is one of those strange 1970s encounters that doesnât get enough attention. AfterâŠencountering Margery Higdonâs 2017 book about her husbandâs ordeal, I thought it would be a good subject for our approach here on The Saucer Life.

So this is a new thing I've wanted to do forever: there are a lot of early Saucer Life Episodes which are short--really short-- and could use some additional oomph. So we're trying it out with our January 2018 episode on The Robertson Panel. Following the original episode is an examination of some of the ways the Panel was discussed in the newspapers from the 60s to the 21st Century.
