Meet Mina Rahravan, a front-line patrol Sergeant serving 350,000 residents of the City of Vaughan and taking care of 40 officers in her charge within 4 District D platoon.

Mina was born and raised in Iran amidst the war and within a country where women and girls have been and are still denied from human rights simply because of their gender.

Mina's passion for making a difference in people's lives has inspired her to learn numerous languages, achieve her master's degree in leadership and become an author.

Mina's work has not gone unnoticed. She has been the recipient of numerous awards, including the Women Achievers Awards and the Public Heroes Award.

In 2022, Mina was the recipient of the Herbert H. Carnegie Community Award during the Police Appreciation Night. She was also nominated by the US State Department for the coveted International Visitors Leadership Program (IVLP), as the only Canadian police officer in 2014 delegated to the U.S. promoting diversity, human rights and inclusiveness.

Mina's dedication to serving her community has taken her passion to the sky, becoming a Tactical Flight Officer serving the citizens of York Region by patrolling the skies in Air2. Her work in building trusting relationships with diverse communities has been featured in Portraits of Giving.

Join us in celebrating Mina's inspiring journey of leadership, service, and dedication to making a difference in people's lives.

  • Explore the debate over lowered recruitment standards in Ontario's police service with insights from retired Staff Sergeant Steve Summerville. This episode tackles the reduction of entry requirements and how it contrasts with the increasing complexity of policing duties. Summerville raises a critical concern: the lack of a mandated physical fitness standard for officers after their initial training, turning physical preparedness into a personal, rather than professional, responsibility.

We discuss the potential risks and long-term effects of these changes on the effectiveness and readiness of law enforcement personnel. As policing challenges grow, the question remains: Is the current approach to recruitment and physical fitness standards sufficient for the demands of modern law enforcement?

  • Matthew utilized the formula of success and he got into policing. I'd say just, just taking it day by day, waiting to earn my role with the company is what got me to the position that I am today. And what's made me so successful to get into Halton police. So, like I said, a lot of people want to have this, this big role.

They want to do all the, like the dirty work, quote unquote, they want to, uh, help out in the biggest way. Now, when I started, my first four months, I was standing in an accessibility section, making sure that the guests that I had in my section were enjoying their time, and that nobody was impeding them. In my time, when I've been managing, usually it takes people to speak up after two shows, that they don't want to be in that said position.

It was a boring position. It was a boring position. However, you did it. I didn't even know this. Yes. But you're right. There are people that, that'll work, you know, a shift or two. And then suddenly it's like, I don't want to do this. Yeah. What would you tell those individuals? I've told a lot of them, like we've all started here.

Everybody has to work their way up to the top. It's success is earned, not given.
